Mark Hubbard reflects on his scorching second-round performance at the 2025 Wyndham Championship, recorded Friday, August 1 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

In this quick-fire “Friday Flash” interview, Hubbard breaks down:
• The tweaks he made overnight that led to his low round
• How soft greens and precise wedges unlocked a run of birdies
• The putt on 14 that sparked momentum for the back-nine charge
• His mindset heading into Moving Day and what it will take to stay in contention

“I felt something click on the range this morning—once the first one dropped, I knew we could go low,” says Hubbard, smiling after signing for an eight-under 62 (check final score).

Hey. Um, I guess you found a little bit different scoring conditions morning and afternoon, although you played well yesterday afternoon. So, can you talk a little bit about the differences? Yeah, I think it was less less about the morning and afternoon, more about uh the winds coming out of a little different direction today out of the north. I think that might make the course play just a touch harder. Um, and I I just thought the pin locations were a lot more difficult today, uh, both to get to and to putt to. So, I think that was the biggest difference. And I was looking at your stats for this year and everything. Um, seems like maybe when you got to Byron Nelson, you had gone through a little bit of a rough spot and now after Byron Nelson, you’ve been cashing checks pretty consistently and everything. What can you talk? Is there something that you’re doing differently or something that changed in your game? Yeah, I mean, I I felt like I played pretty good the entire season. Uh, I just don’t feel like I’ve gotten a ton out of my game. Um, as much as I’d like. I I will say I feel like I’ve putted better the second half. Um, so that usually helps helps with your scoring. So, I would attribute it to that. But, yeah, it’s kind of been a weird year. I just I feel like my game’s been good, but I just haven’t gotten a lot out of it. Yeah. At what point does strategy fall away to maybe more aggressive play on your half because at this point you’re you’re looking at the leaderboard and saying, “Geez, I got to put up some numbers to get in contention.” And then you do it. Yeah. So, so where’s the balance between strategy and aggression? Yeah, I’m not I mean I’m not a big leaderboard watcher. Um I’ll glance every now and then. I don’t try and avoid it, but you know, especially if one of my friends is is playing well too, I’ll glance to see how they’re doing. But for me, like I I won’t really change much until maybe the last couple holes coming in. So, let’s say I were to play well tomorrow and be in contention on Sunday, you know, 14 15 I’d start kind of looking and see like, hey, what do I need to do? um especially 15 being you know a par five seeing how aggressive I can be into that green. So really probably won’t be till then which would be what 67th hole. So if you can maintain these conditions and the scoring conditions especially what does that change in your approach to the weekend? Yeah, I mean it looks like there’s possibility of some weather this afternoon so that might soften it up. It’s going to be a little bit colder um the next couple days. That’s going to be both amazing um but interesting to see how the course will change. It’s in pretty immaculate shape right now. So, I don’t know that much is going to change. I think it’s kind of just going to stay perfect and I don’t think it’ll get a lot firmer, but it’s going to stay fast. And um yeah, just try and keep the ball below the hole as much as I can. Last question. What What happens after this weekend? What what what where are you headed? what do you want to do and what are you going to do? Yeah, I mean uh win or a second. I’m going to Memphis to sweat even more there. Um if not, I got, you know, close to a month off which will be amazing. Um I just moved in February, so I haven’t really been home much, so it’ll be great to enjoy home and we’re in like the Lake Tahoe Reno area, so I’ll be at the lake a bunch and going on hikes with my kids and just being outdoors. Uh so yeah, both both are great. But if you if you have to travel a little bit more for golf, you won’t be too upset. They’ll understand. They’ll understand for sure. Thank you. Question is um is a week like this more pressure or more do you feel more freedom that you can just you gota you got to play well. Yeah. I think you know it it depends on where you are. Um, I think, you know, if I needed like a top 20 or just to make the cut, I feel like that’s a lot of pressure cuz you’re really thinking about the numbers. Whereas the position I’m in, it’s basically win or go home. So, I’m just trying to make as many birdies as humanly possible and see where I end up. So, for me, I I I have felt less pressure this week than I have in the past at this tournament. So, it’s kind of been nice. Cool. Thank you. Of course. Thank you. It’s up.
