Tony Finau doesn’t believe his current performance merits a spot on the U.S. team, despite his past Ryder Cup experience, even if captain Keegan Bradley were to select him.

Finau, a two-time Ryder Cup participant, knows what it takes to win the prestigious matchplay event, having been part of Team USA’s triumphant 2021 squad at Whistling Straits. If he’s to join the team again, he’ll be banking on a captain’s pick, and Bradley has a wealth of options, including himself.

Bradley could make history by becoming the first playing captain since 1963 in the Ryder Cup. If he chooses to include himself, that would leave just five spots open for players like Finau. It comes as Bryson DeChambeau told Tiger Woods exactly what he thinks of him.

However, Finau doesn’t feel he currently deserves a spot on the team. “If the Ryder Cup were today, I would tell Keegan to make sure you don’t pick me, ” Finau stated, according to the Golfing Gazette.

“But the decision isn’t being made today. Why not make a run at the play-offs? That’s the goal, that’s the ultimate goal.

“Right now, it’s about taking one step at a time, or as the saying goes, one shot at a time. All I can do over the next few weeks is try to play my best golf and see where the chips fall.”

Finau will need to finish strong in the remaining PGA Tour season, with the six-time winner currently ranked 50th in the FedEx Cup standings.

This ranking likely secures him a spot in the opening playoff event at the FedEx St. Jude Championship next week.

He’s teetering on the edge, with his current rank just snagging him the last slot for the upcoming BMW Championship. To keep that spot, he’s got to deliver at the Wyndham Championship this week and then at the St. Jude.

And he’s not the only marquee player aiming for a strong finish to catch the captain’s eye for a pick. Jordan Spieth, a staple in the American Ryder Cup team over the past five events, finds his position uncertain after a year of ups and downs in 2025.

An injury during the Travelers Championship followed by the arrival of his third child led to a four-week hiatus before the Open this month.

“It’s a big stretch for me right now,” admitted the 2017 Open winner to reporters at Royal Portrush. “I haven’t played in four weeks, and I moved down the FedEx Cup rankings, Ryder Cup. People are making up ground, and I didn’t play.”

Spieth explained further, “We had the baby coming, I had to withdraw from Travelers. It’s a big next six weeks coming up for me, so the ultimate goal is to try to make the Ryder Cup team, and the only way to do that is to play really well in these big events, the Open Championship being first.”

After tying for 40th at the year’s final major, Spieth is set to return to the greens at Sedgefield Country Club, joining forces with Finau this week.
