Charlie Woods is firmly in contention for a spot on the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup golf team following a strong performance at the Junior PGA Championship in West Lafayette, Indiana.

The 16-year-old son of 15-time major champion Tiger Woods carded a 5-under-par 66 during a rain-delayed third round at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex’s Ackerman-Allen Course on Thursday (31 July). That score moved him to 12-under for the week, tying him for second place heading into the final round.

With two automatic places up for grabs on the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team, Woods is now one round away from potentially sealing a spot at the event, which takes place from 23–25 September at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black in New York. He has never competed in the tournament before.

“My round was pretty up and down… but nine birdies is pretty good,” Woods said. “Overall, a pretty solid round. Pretty good position going into tomorrow.”

Woods, a rising junior at the Benjamin School in Florida, won the AJGA’s Team TaylorMade Invitational in May but missed the cut at the U.S. Junior Amateur. He’s currently ranked No. 20 in the AJGA rankings and has not yet committed to a college.
