Are you constantly hitting weak, high shots with no power or spin? Struggling to compress the golf ball and create that tour-level ball strike? The reason might be simpler than you think — and it’s likely the flipping flaw that’s holding you back.
In this video, I break down:
Why amateur golfers flip the club at impact
What true compression actually looks and feels like
The simple swing changes to start compressing the ball like the pros
One drill you can use today to eliminate flipping for good
Whether you’re trying to break 100, 90, or 80 — compression is a game-changer. Stop scooping, start compressing, and unlock real ball-striking consistency!

This right here is one of my favorite iron compression drills. And I showed a recent student of mine, Jonathan. He came to me fatting, not compressing the golf ball. He left compressing the golf ball much better and significantly reducing how many fat shots he had. There’s a three ball process, so make sure you follow each and every stage just as I showed Jonathan. Now, if you’re brand new to the channel, this is a reminder. I’m powered by you. So, as long as you’ve subscribed and you’ve turned on the bell, just like I’m answering this comment right here, this could be yours. And I’d love to help you play your best golf this summer. Let’s get into the video. So, setup is really easy. We’ve got where our feet line would be. And I place my golf club directly down the line of my ball, roughly a yard in front, parallel to my feet. Okay, really easy setup. Couldn’t be any easier. Now, the whole goal of this drill is to get you more tuned into what’s happening post impact. So, just that millisecond after striking the golf ball as opposed to what’s happening pre-impact. Everyone’s teaching pre-impact and that’s why it’s putting a plaster over a problem or a band-aid over an issue. This gets to the real core of it. So, when we’re struggling with fat and thin shots, really simple, the bottom of our arc is happening before the golf ball. We’re striking the ground around here. The lowest point of our swing is here. What we’re looking to achieve, and what this drill does achieve, is the lowest point of our swing happening here. Just simply look where I’m contacting that grass. So, the little key triggers to this drill, and I showed Jonathan this in just simply three golf balls. you won’t believe the difference it has is look at this. If I just get you to come here a little closer. We’re looking and imagining a laser is pointing out. This is what we call the fereral. Okay. A laser is pointing out the fereral down to that golf club. I’ll show you from a few different angles. So, there’s just twigs straight away. If we’re leaning back, so the bottom of our arc is happening before the golf ball. our laser out of our fereral points to the end of that golf club extremely quickly and then in fact it comes off that golf club extremely quickly causing us that fat that thin best case scenario weak high shots. If however we work through this drill we’re going to point down that golf club but such a long time. Look at the difference in that. If I just keep doing this here, look at the difference. I’m pointing down here. Now, I love just to show you this in the player cam perspective. Really slow. This is what we’re looking to achieve. This is what most people do. In fact, 90% of golfers. So, the first stage, roll that golf ball out the way and simply work the golf club slowly. This is so, so underestimated, and I can’t believe why nobody actually does this. I get all my students to do it, hence why I’m showing you right now. I want you to dress the golf ball, just work to hip height, and work the golf club slowly, allowing that fereral and that laser to point down that line, down that line, and every three reps, throw a bad one in. you will soon start to trigger and get that aha moment which is really really powerful. So, you’ve done a few reps and I’m accelerating this a little quicker here for you so you can get out onto the range and start working on this. The first ball I want you to hit is at around 50% speed and really pose that finish. So, a little something like this. Now, look at where I finish there. Oh, that was so out of the middle. And please, please follow this in the steps that I’m explaining in ball one all the way through to ball three. Your next ball, we’re now going to hit a 50% speed and full finish. But still really trying to figure out how we get that that low feeling, that post impact low feeling like that. I love a response point because you just know when you got it right or wrong. And I think that’s why, in fact, I don’t think I know that’s why Jonathan left the session going, “Alex, I’ve got a clear image of exactly how I’m going to improve and exactly what drill I’m going to do at the range. I almost don’t need you, mate.” I was like, “Oh, no, don’t say that.” But actually, to be honest with you, that is my goal. I want you to leave here knowing exactly what to do to take your ball striking from down here to up here. So, the next swing you’re going to hit away is at 50%. And simply it just gives your brain a chance to go, “Aha, this is what I’m trying to do.” If it’s too quick, we don’t have that chance to think about it, and we don’t have that chance to get that muscle memory to groove it in. So, 50% speed, full finishes like this. What a rip shot again. And I definitely feel like I’m more forward. I definitely feel like you could almost say that laser probably extends out my sternum down to that golf club as well. So, it’s almost like they’re matching and they’re in a line as opposed to up and off the golf club. In fact, you know what? I really like the sternum there. I really do. And the final shot of this set, full shot. You hit it away. And then you just keep repeating that. And that’s how you take this from a range and a drill concept into something that’s a dependable feeling to take on the golf course and hammer your mates and then go, “Woo, you’re starting to strike this super well.” So before we hit this final shot, I just want to show you the before and after of what this drill will do to you. So the first one on the right hand side of the screen is me leaning back and my sternum and my golf club pointing off this golf club early. It’s important you see this because you can start to then recognize what is the good and why is it good and what is the bad and why is it bad. That’s how you actually improve your swing. So on the left hand side of the screen playing now is what we’re looking for. Just look how much lower I am. I’m feeling like this laser that’s pointing out my fereral is staying on that golf club super super long. And I hope that really comes across in this video just like it did for Jonathan. And I just want to show you one extra thing here which is a little bit of a bonus in this video which I think really settles a few debates in golf. Now you’ll have noticed as I’m swinging through my golf club is working round on an arc. I’m not trying to force my golf club down this line. That’s a super dangerous thing to do that would cause you to shank it and hit super weak shots. I want you to trust in the arc of the golf swing. The arc of the golf swing. You can still hit into out. You can still compress. And in fact, you will compress even more than you ever have before. But don’t let that club work down there. That’s the last thing I said to Jonathan. Don’t work the club down it. It’s all about that laser pointing on it. But look how it’s working round. Okay. Should we hit this final shot? Let’s show you this compression. What a beautiful golf hole this is as well. I often do this before each shot. I think it’s a great reminder. It’s almost imagining that’s there post impact. Control it and starts it beautifully struck iron shots that just do not get affected by the wind at all. That was right down the throat of the flag. So, I hope you enjoyed that lesson about understanding a simple drill to control your low point in your swing and thinking more about post impact, not

Golfers this is a cracker!! 😮 I’d love to hear what you need help with. So please comment below 👇🏼
Hi Alex, been watching you for a while and do eventually plan on coming to see you!
Lately, I've been working on my driver slice, which is going well. Turning hands over to prevent a slice. But since, all my irons are left and some very bad hooks!! Any idea as to why? Maybe the hand turning over habit has crept into my iron play? Or alignment an issue?
Not the best golfer, scored 94 for the first time yesterday which is my best. But the lefties are bugging me!!!
I absolutely love this . Compression, = height = distance. The boys at the municipal course will surely be in awe tomorrow. Thx Alex
Thx for the video. I use a flash light in a pei e of pipe for this. Great tips!
I was told another version of this that also works. Imagine a broom stick where your club is and you are trying to hit the back of the broom stick and push it straight forward as far as you can until release 😁
love this video
will be trying this in the morning!! 100%
