Jordan Spieth got off to a really solid start on day one of the Wyndham Championship at Sedgefield Country Club on Thursday.
Spieth posted a round of five-under par 65 during the first round of the Wyndham Championship – one that included seven birdies and two bogeys.
The 32-year-old has experienced huge struggles on the PGA Tour this season, but he still seems to be in an extremely positive mood right now, all things considered.
Spieth explained how difficult the golf course is playing at the Wyndham Championship before his round began on Thursday.
So he will be delighted with his score of five-under par on day one.
Spieth is still hopeful of making the Ryder Cup team in September, and a win in North Carolina this week would put him in a really strong position regarding that.

He gained more than four strokes on the greens – a huge jump up from his season average.
The Dallas native hit 50% of the fairways and 66.67% of the greens in regulation.
So a round of 65 sounds like a fair outcome for Spieth. However, he admitted after his round that he got very lucky on one hole in particular.
He said: “Well, I got some really good breaks today on the greens. My one on 14 I think would have gone off the green if it didn’t go in and that would have been in a tough spot to even go up and down so call that a two and a half shot break just on a putt. So my speed control was pretty average, but when I got uphill putts I knocked ’em in.
“So yeah, I mean everything was OK. I didn’t drive the ball particularly well until the last five or six holes. Same with my iron play, was really the last seven holes or so. So I was kind of just a little bit off to start. I didn’t have a great warmup this morning and it kind of translated, but it was nice to hang in there, get some breaks on the greens and be a couple under while I wasn’t really, really feeling very good about my game. Then I started to kind of get in a nice rhythm to finish and hopefully carry that into the rest of the week.“
Spieth is right there. A par could have easily turned into a six or a seven, had his ball not hit the hole.
Jordan Spieth’s stats on day one at the Wyndham Championship
Spieth’s putting was clearly a key factor to his fine opening round on Thursday.
Despite suggesting that his speed control was well off, he still ranked 2nd in the field on the greens.

Now the challenge for Spieth is to keep producing similar levels of golf for the next three days at the Wyndham Championship and see where that takes him.
The American desperately needs a win but whether that will come this week remains to be seen.
