Dive into the opening day of the AIG Women’s Open 2025 at Royal Porthcawl, where unexpected stars emerged and Japanese players stole the spotlight.

After a challenging start to the week, Japan’s Eri Okayama and Rio Takeda carded impressive 5‑under‑par 67s to claim a share of the lead on Day 1. Okayama bounced back from an early bogey, while Takeda overcame a double bogey at the 9th to deliver a stunning back-nine comeback

Meanwhile, high-profile contenders endured mixed fortunes: Lottie Woad, the newly turned professional and early favourite following her Scottish and Irish Open wins, posted an even‑par 72 after a turbulent round that included four birdies and four bogeys.

Defending champion Lydia Ko struggled to one‑over, and world number one Nelly Korda finished at two‑under, unable to make a full charge under surprisingly calm conditions

Sophia Popoff the German getting us going and we are up and running. Ma Saigo now a major champion. [Applause] Uh it was like Oh, what a wonderful shot from Teada. I thought she was kind of snookered over there with only seven yards of green to work with. But what a start year round. Georgia Hall. Yeah, from the left of the first. You can see how close that out of bounds sneaks in. She had a fantastic little chip there to give herself a good chance of saving power. Now Gino Titun long attempt to get four under. Oh, good one. Great one. Yeah, what a putt. Echoes from the crowd there. Everyone just saying what a putt because it really was fifth. And this is Yamashita. Long par three. Playing downwind which is helping the players. Pin at the back. You’ve got to get up over a false front. Oh. Oh, he’s got a chance. Hit it 219 y. Go on. Go on. That right there was just the wind coming back into her face. That was cruel. One roll more. But in for a parley par start. Opportunity here to leap frog Okiyama for Yamashita at nine for Eagle right in the middle. Very good. Takes the lead. First player to get to five under for Birdie on the short par 38. This will give them a cheer. Yes. Well done. Love cut. Wonderful shot there from Nelly Carter. Just judged that perfectly. landed at the top of the slope, one bounce and spun back to the hole. Now, what of Miranda Wang here at 14? Can she find an elusive birdie to get within one? Oh, and what a putt, especially on 14. As you say, they’re very elusive. Not many on that today. Use Okiyama for birdie to get to five under. Go, go. Yes. Well done, [Music] Hoju Kim. Sorry, a lot of Davis thinks I’m introducing her enough. I’m not at all. I mouth the same exact thing there. We see Hoju Kim. Use it, use the wind, turn it in and done it to perfection. Little bit of spin and perfect shot from her. Chance to get back to level par again. This one just drifting maybe a little right of that flag here on 15. Yeah, barely right. Just a little bit. That is absolutely gorgeous there. Oh my goodness me. Scared the flank. Scared me. What a shot that is from Teada. She had to take a drop. Lydia Co. saw it heading to the bushes off the tea. is her fourth. Yep. Should still save par. And now Madlin Sagstrom. Beautiful camera work catching it from the moment of contact in the air all the way to the putting surface. A beautifully executed as well. Now over to Inji Chan. Another that with a victory this week could get the grand slam in the majors. You beauty. Into the red she goes there at 10. Thanks Paul. Oh, and that’s a great shot there from Lotty. Good birdie chance now to get back to even par. And here’s Mimi Roads. Her second shot to the 11th. Two under. Had a good start to her tournament. Oh, another lovely shot there. Getting better. Just using that slope at the side. Oh, from that approach from Inji Chan just dancing around the flag there. Yes, very good. The 15th hole, that green, it’s quite a small green. All kind of set up like an upturn saucer and quite shallow. But Lilia has just made it look super easy. What a fabulous shot there. A hole. Further up is Darcy Harry for her birdie. Just quietly going about things. Does the member get that drop. Do we see up at the green here on 16? Hayaka Furu. Oh, is there anyone better from long range? She is. When she gets that putter going, she can hold them from everywhere. Yes, great closing birdie there. And she is going to join Okyama at the top of the leaderboard. Got a slight club twirl there from Nelly. And just great that this is Austin Kim. What a touch that is. Simbutier. That was a lovely sound from that bunker shot. You just heard that real thump. [Applause] And a putt that demanded her attention. Enjoying herself. They’re enjoying supporting her as well. So good around the greens. And there’s another example. Yeah. Beautifully played. Of course, it started with a birdie, ends with a birdie. Lot of grafting and hanging on in between, but a decent opener for Lotty Wood, Mimi Roads. Loose second shot just down in that valley there. But if this Oh, absolutely delightful. We chip there. How you beauty? Yeah, most people have been coming up short from there. We’ve seen a few, but cer almost getting it up to the pin. You know, she’s looking just outside of 4 feet for this putt. There won’t be a lot of movement. Really good time to be on the the more aggressive side. Got to give yourself a chance. There you go. And that is a birdie on the final hole for world number one. Two under car 70. A reminder of the leaderboards nearing the end of day one of the 2025 AIG Women’s Open. Erokyama and Rio Teada tied at the top after their 67s. It’s really on the second page of the leaderboard. They find the biggest names, but Japan dominating the very top of the board.
