WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State rising junior Owen Sawyer won the 123rd Iowa Amateur Men’s Golf Championship Wednesday in dominating fashion. The Cedar Falls native finished with a 203, one of just eight players to finish under par for the tournament.
In addition to finishing under par, his 12-under was eight-strokes better than the three-way tie for second place. Sawyer shot a 68 in the opening round and followed that with a 65 in the second round, the only person in the tournament to have a round of 67 or less. In the final round, Sawyer shot a 70 for the victory.
The victory earns Sawyer an exemption to the 125th US Amateur, set for Aug. 11-17 at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Sawyer wasn’t the only Cyclone in the Top 10, as his teammate, Zach May, finished in a tie for second at four-under par. Former Cyclone Nate McCoy tied for sixth at two-under par.
