Golf rules state that if a ball moves due to a practice swing and is not replaced to its original spot, a two-stroke penalty applies. Though rules have been softened in recent years to account for natural causes like gravity or weather, this movement was clearly caused by Lowry’s club. The weather at Royal Portrush was relentless throughout the day with rain adding to the difficulty. Lowry’s frustrations were on full display, even yelling f off asterisk after another errant shot found the left rough. Despite the setback, he managed to bounce back with a crucial birdie on the 15th to help stay in contention. Reactions on social media were swift. One user wrote, “The ball clearly moved. Intent doesn’t matter.” He caused the penalty is fair, though this penalty may impact his chances of making the cut. The bigger debate now surrounds the role of technology in modern golf and the scrutiny it places on every player’s mood. As Lowry’s passionate outbursts and raw emotion continue to make headlines, so too does the ongoing conversation around sportsmanship, mental resilience, and the ever watchful eye of highdefinition cameras.

  1. Open should NEVER be held in that town again, more respect in the 26 countries of Ireland and non sectarian.

  2. They know the rules! The ball moved, practice swing or not! Put it back where it was. He didn't! Therefore he was penalised.
