The Pitching Wedge is no longer ideal for pitching in golf. To play a golf pitch that spins and stops, us a sand wedge. Learn to play the Golf Pitch Shot in 3 minutes, with Aussie Golf Pros’ next video in our series: ‘Learn to Play Golf in 3 Minutes’.
With today’s stronger lofts, the wedge flies low and runs. This is the 1st of typical mistakes, many golfers make, when pitching from 30-50 yards. Amateur golfers often struggle with these short approach shots, because they are played with less power. These shots require a slightly different pitching technique.
Glen Haynes demonstrates how to reduce power and still make excellent contact with the golf ball. He shows you how you can control your distances and play pitch shots with a higher margin of error. How to pitch in golf in 3 minutes is the ideal quick-fire lesson for any golfer who is struggling to hit the ball close to the pin from these distances.

Golf Coaches, Not Teachers
The Aussie Golf Pros are holistic coaches in every sense of the word. Steve and Glen are both fully qualified members of the PGA of Australia and are avid students of the Sports Sciences. Together, they are certified in Advanced Golf Coaching, Golf Psychology, TPI (Body-Swing Connection), NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), Personal Development and Skill Acquisition.
Steve and Glen are not ‘Method’ coaches. They recognise that there are literally 1000’s of ways to swing a golf club! Rather than try to ‘change’ your swing, their goal is to help You Be The Best Golfer You Can Be!
Skill Development vs Technical Changes
Although technique is an important factor in improving a golfer’s performance, Skill Development is largely neglected in golf coaching today. Skill is something that can be tangibly improved with proper understanding of the golf impact laws and effective practice towards improved performance.
External Focus of Attention
Most golf teaching involves an internal focus. Common suggestions might include increased hip turn, a still head or improved hand path. These are all factors of the golf swing, which many golfers and teachers consider important. However, as they are focused internally, on movements of the body, golfers find changes extremely difficult to process.
Today you’re going to learn how to hit a pit shot from 30 to 50 yards in 3 minutes. We’re going to keep it nice and simple, highlight the common mistakes that a lot of amateur golfers make so that you can be more consistent and more precise with these short approaches. We also have a free downloadable training guide. The link is in the description below. Good golfers. I’m Glenn Haynes. Welcome to Aussie Golf Pros, where we help you be the best golfer you can be. I have my Cleveland Zip Core sand wedge. It’s 56°. The first mistake that a lot of amateur golfers make is they pitch with a pitching wedge. But these days, a pitching wedge is pretty low lofted. It’s only around 42°. That’s not enough to get the height and the spin that we want to control the ball and get the ball to stop quickly on the green. Now, pitch shot is obviously less than full power. So, we’ve got options on how to reduce that power. We can come down the grip a little bit or we can shorten the swing or we can slow it down. Typically though, if you slow down too much, so you’ve got this big back swing and then you quit on it, you’re going to mishit it or you shorten the back swing too much and then follow through too much and that way you’re going to drop kick it or thin it. To give yourself the best chance of contact, you want a balance. You want tempo. Back swing and follow through the same length. That’s going to help you with your distance control and your consistency of your strike. This shot is just over 30 yards. So, we need a swing of around half length and then half length through here. So, we go just past the pin. Now, notice I didn’t take a divot. We want that margin of error of just sweeping the grass. Yeah, sure. Some tour pros out there that will take these big divots. They’re hitting down onto it steeply, but that doesn’t give you a lot of margin for error, and they’re practicing a lot. So, we don’t have that option. Let’s get some margin of error by just sweeping the grass. What’s really going to help you do that is get the shaft in the right position. If you get too steep here, too vertical, you’re going to dig down into the ground cuz you’re coming in too steeply. You want the shaft of the club pointing at the ball so that you can come through with a more shallow angle of attack. You can control that distance much more easily. This time it’s a 50 yard pitch and the only thing that we need to change is have a little bit more speed so the ball carries a little bit further. You got two options. You can either swing a little faster through impact or lengthen the swing a little bit. That’s all you need to do. Ball position is still going to stay the same. I have it just ahead of center. Keep it nice and simple. And we still don’t need to take a divot. We’re just going to cut that grass. So, a little faster for me. produce a little bit more spin as well and it’s next to the pin. And of course, repair your pitch mark because the pitch shot does make a dent. This is a 45 yard shot, but a bit of a different proposition. Now, the flag is all the way to the back. So, we have all this green to work with. You can still use your 56° sand wedge, but you’re going to have to fly it most of the way. And some golfers find that difficult to visualize because of that expansive green. So, let’s try the shot with a pitching wedge. Yes, this time we’re going to use a pitching wedge because it’s actually a pitch and run club. So, same technique, but this time a shorter swing cuz we’re not carrying it as far. So, a pitch and run just gone past on the right hand side. So, it is about reading the green as well, but that can be easier to judge than trying to fly the sandwich all the way. Many club golfers struggle with the pit shot because it’s less than full power. They’re not accelerating as much and the contact suffers. But if you stick to these principles, then you can pitch more consistently and control your distance better. Now, if you want to learn how to play bunker shots in 3 minutes, watch this video next. There’s your free training guide to download. It’s in the description below. Thank you so much for watching. We look forward to your company next week. Are you the best golfer you can be?

Thanks Glen, talking yards in Australia is not common, always a great fan of yours 👍
You have lost this Australian viewer by using yards..
Great content as usual Glen; nice srixon gear also. I use my 48 gap wedge a lot also depending on distance and pin position and prefer the shallow delivery. All the LIV, DP and PGA commentary is in yards so I don't get the complaint re same.
Both of those are an 8 iron bump and run for me! hahaha. I'd never get my wedges under that – I'd skull them over the back 9.9/10!! Thanks again Glen.
nice Glen, thanks
This is a 1 in 20 shot for me, despite endless practice and many lessons. Do you have any suggestions for the yips? Great video, however, and I am sure you are absolutely right with everything.
Excellent, very clear, easy to follow advice. Thank you.
