so the objective of today’s lesson is to teach you a modern stats based approach to putting which has been practiced by the very best players in the world and the very best coaches so the first step here is to build a repeatable and comfortable setup position that maximizes alignment which will then help with Club face control and ball speed with posture on putting you want to be having a slight tilt over from the hips so the spine angle goes from vertical position to being more tilted over the ball now most putting coaches and certainly some of the best in the world really do Advocate a position where the eyes are directly over the ball if they’re slightly to the inside I personally don’t think that’s the end of the world but having an eye position directly over the ball is generally agreed to be the best way forward now a very simple way to achieve that and to get comfortable is to have a hinge over from the hips and then just get a ball place it on your left eye drop it down and wherever that lands your eyes are going to be over the ball so the second thing we’re going to look at is grip now within this video I am not going to Advocate a standard reverse overlap a cross-handed a claw an arm lock that for me doesn’t matter what matters is the grip is relaxed that you’re comfortable with it and you can place it on the club in a repeatable fashion the next step is grit pressure and if you can have a Rel relaxed grip pressure over the ball that will help with speed control it’s been tested time and time again and if you as the very best Putters in the world a relaxed grip pressure leads to more consistency rather than trying to grip and hold on as tight as possible the best way to test this out is if you take your Putter and grip onto the handle as hard as you physically can to on a scale of 1 to 10 you are gripping on at a 10 out of 10 you’re really trying to strangle the top of the shaft and just have a few puts like that and just feel how uncomfortable that is and Pace control will most likely suffer then on the next put try and hold the putter as light as possible so a one out of 10 the complete opposite end of the scale and again have a stroke the one out of 10 the lighter grit pressure will usually lead to better Pace control over the 10 out of 10 because the grip will automatically apply more pressure to gain control of the club head but you don’t have to consciously think about it if you do want to continue with the scale however try and find somewhere about a three or a four out of 10 on the grit pressure scale this generally gives most golfers the best type of grip pressure to control pace and line man I love holding demonstration puts lastly we’re going to be looking at alignment now this isn’t a fixed rule however again this is the type of alignment deployed by the best Putters in the world with this put I know that I need to be aiming on the left edge of the hole cuz it breaks slightly to the right hand side so I want to be aiming my putter blade at the left Edge at the hole then I want my body to be in parallel alignment now what that’s going to mean is that my feet my knees my hips and my shoulders they are all aiming on a parallel alignment to the left of the hle you can think of this as train tracks so I have my alignment of the putter where I want my ball to set off and the alignment of my body and again this is the setup position favored by some of the best Putters in the world do it for me one more time oh my God please just let me move to Pearl Valley my word the second thing we’re going to look at is how you can refine your Technique just a little bit more now this is information garnered from some of the best coaches in the world including ing Phil Kenyan who is right up there in my opinion as one of the very best now something that he emphasizes over and over again is stability over style now what that means is you can take the Potter blade back on a very inside stroke to inside like an opening door you could try and take it very straight back very straight through what we’re looking for here is a putting stroke that stands up under pressure so that could mean that you could have a variety of different grips a variety of Different Stroke Styles as long as you can return that putter to a square position to your intended start line quite frankly that is all that matters and what this all means is we want to have good face control now on this p and we’re talking about 10 ft here and it’s a right to left breaker a couple of Cups outside the right lip so I’m going to be aiming my putter face at the TEEG here as I get set up so as long as I can return putter face to a square position in relation to start line I can get the putter blade back to square turn something which is often overlooked but is vitally important with inputting is Pace control now we’re not just talking about Pace control on the golf ball we’re talking about Pace control on the putter blade cuz one of the most striking things that you find when you look at the data is the pace of the stroke going back is often the same Pace as coming through the ball with the very best players in the world in fact some of the very best Putters actually slow down the putter coming into impact and if you think about all the things that you’ve been taught in the past is you have to accelerate through impact when in fact the very best players often do something different so even though it sounds quite strange getting the putter moving faster back and feeling like it’s moving slow lower through the ball will put you more in line with what some of the very best Putters in the world are doing oh not me though damn I missed one something which the very best players in the world do is visualize and it’s something that they practice so over this length of P actually visualize the ball traveling towards the hole and its ultimate destination hopefully within the cup an easy way to practice this is to keep your rise on the hole while you’re taking your practice puts this will naturally give you the feel that you need to propel the ball the appropriate distance now this put is slightly up the slope so one last look at the hole to the ball and then just release it on its merry way be pin high oh I mean it’s a huge pull but the pace now we’re going to get on to the drills on how you can work on all these aspects of your putting however it would help if you do keep stats so a stats driven approach to practice will allow you to identify areas of weakness so myself I use shot scope and with my putting it really shows that within 5 ft of the hole I need to make drastic improvements now because I know those stats when I’m planning out my practice that’s the area that I can focus on so the first Dr that we’re going to be looking at here is a gate drill inspired by some of the very best coaches in the world and this is all about improving face control control and path so on this first gate what I’ve done here is I’ve set up a TEEG on the toe of the club and the heel of the club with just enough room that the putter can pass in between the two pegs if my stroke is out of line it will move and it will clip one of the tegs I’ve also made sure that these tegs are set up Square to my intended start line which is the center of the hole so a straight line should come from the putter face and intersect the middle of the cup I’m then going to use the alignment Aid on the ball this is a Prov I’m using here today and I’ve just lined up that marker again with the center of the cup so if I perform a successful stroke here with the posture nice grip pressure return my club face through the gate and square it up to the ball we should be finding a dead straight put going in and if you can be successful at that drill what we can do is we can move further back now with this put because it is a dead straight one up the hill I can set up another gate which is 10 ft away from the hole and about 4 ft away from the first gate that we used I can go through exactly the same process the difference is I now have a gate for my putter I also have a gate which my ball can travel through ah I just clipped the inside TEEG so I know that something within my stroke there caus the club to be returned on a little bit more of an inside path than what it set out on now I could use video or lesson which shows why my stroke went wrong there however if I just repeat this drill and simply learn to return the putter through that gate subconsciously I will start to improve my stroke now the second drill is a speed ladder now this is all about developing Pace control so I’ve set up a gate at about 10 ft about 15 ft and then at about 20 ft and my whole purpose here is to go to each gate trying to get the ball stopping in between the two T’s so to make sure that I don’t get a ball in the way I’m going to go from the furthest to the shortest so my first put towards the 20ft gate I’m looking at where I want the ball to finish looking back at the ball and then stroking the PO go go go go go ah that is absolutely MH now it depends how competitive that you want to be with this drill but what I would do straight away is I will be picking this ball up and going back to the start I will be hitting three perfectly paced puts much better Pace there just passed very acceptable second to 15 ft folks on that spot oh that is absolutely bang on on okay oh that’s pretty good that’s pretty good got a little bit excited but that’s more than acceptable and once you’ve done this a few times try and shift it to different braking puts as well to simulate what it would be like in an actual game environment the final drill here is the dreaded circle now this is pioneered by so many top professionals Tiger Woods Phil mickson you name it and the objective here is very simple you have to make your way around this 4T Circle holding every put as soon as you miss one you have to start again this drill helps build resilience under pressure and we’re going to be using everything that we spoke about within this video so eyes over the ball nice posture relaxed grip pressure we’re going to be looking at the hole looking at the ball and hopefully returning the blade through that imaginary gate something else I would recommend with this drill is to line your ball up each time although it will take you longer it will also simulate what it’s like out on the course to a little bit more of a higher degree that would have gone in that would have gone in can we all agree that would have gone in so the key takeaways from this video prioritize face control and Tempo to master the mechanics of the putting stroke develop a feel for Speed and start to visualize the ball’s Journey to the hole and practice short puts to handle those high pressure moments so with consistent practice you should be a to lower your scores and if you do need more help Humble, great quality video, it’s all us golfers need.
Great advice! Where in the Southern Cape was this recorded?
Fantastic, simple and clear instruction…..thanks Pete!
My problem is tigher grip pressure firms up my forearms and really helps keep my path on track. With a loose grip i can literally see my path "wobble"
So I'm losing pace control gaining start line
Obviously I'm trying to find some middle ground 😅
Great video
Enjoyed the video. Enjoy your approach on instruction.
The elephant in the room is accurate aim or more precisely seeing line accurately from the address position. The final sneak peek that Pete positively advocates can throw aim off because of the parallax effect. There are a couple of Mike Malaska videos dealing with this though his solutions I cant get on with. (I'm trying to keep this post as short as possible so not going into the whys and wherefores unless asked!) He does drop one gem though, the observation that belief (seeing the line accurately) trumps trust (using the line on the ball or a mark on the line of putt). Out of hundreds s of vids on putting I must have seen only one very poor quality one by Geoff Mangum deals specifically with the sighting technique required to see line accurately. He deals with it also in his noughties book Optimal Putting at page 153 or so which a while ago you could download from the internet. In effect he advocates swivelling the head on the target line so that one eye lays vertically above the other. Of course you could try side saddle with the advantage of binocular vision!
Was this filmed before or after African Pebble beach 😁
Dear Mr Finch. Never, ever sign for Liv. Kind regards, everyone.
Great graphics!
Nice!! In my back yard!! Welcome in SA!!
if this title is true we better never see another putting lesson video on this channel ever again 😀 😀 😀
Great content Pete! It's wonderful to have a creator that hasn't been bought and paid for
Very good!!! Much needed.
Also looking forward to watching you put these concepts into action on your next video. I did notice that when you really slowed everything down you hit the center but I also noticed that during the time you were demonstrating take back speed you got really focused on taking back and lost focus on everything else thus missing.
AGAIN, THANK YOU!!!
VERY HELPFUL.
I never look at the hole I look at where the ball would finish on a straight line through the higher point, if I look at the hole I often miss the line I picked 👍.
Apparently this is based on the very best players in the world, who would have guessed
Great another video by an influencer perpetuating putting myths. Almost everything you stated about set up is wrong and not what Phil Kenyon, David Orr or Bruce Rearick say are truths. (Top 3 putting teachers in the world) I can’t watch the rest.
Excellent use of graphics!
Hopefully Rick's followers will now jump ship to pete instead.
Now that the other UK guy is on LIV I can’t wait to see Finchy’s Open coverage this year.
Thank you for this great putting lesson. I struggle with long putts.
I have always adored you, Pete, and your content has only gotten better and your team is stellar. I wanted to say thanks to you for not being a LIV sellout and always showing us your heart. Plus you might be the best golfer on YouTube as we can all see your game just continues getting better. Keep up the great work. Cheers from the only golf store in Somerville MA!
Rick can suck it
great video, just got a new putter and have been working hard on reducing my overall putts taken in a round. Will put these to use next time I'm out
Yes putting…. Said no one ever 😆😆😆😆 a no it's great 😃
Love swing quest videos. Honestly I find it as the best learnings vids. Also very easy to actually take it as a lesson straight to my practise. Thanks Pete and team…oh yeah and it being on Pearl Valley might have made me a bit biased…. 🏔️
well , i hope you are going to watch this video Pete. Just saying 😉
Hit 100 putts per day from 3 ft for 1 week. If you can, use something like blast motion which will help you keep track and give you feedback on the stroke. It will absolutely transform your putting.
Thank you so much for a putting video ❤
i struggle with pace, leave a lot of putts short. Great tips to try and help.
Does this mean Pearl Valley content? I hope so. Such a good track.
Great lesson Pete. I'm working hard on putting at the moment and taking lessons to help. Do you have any green reading videos planned? Not just reading turn, but pace too (particularly given that we're not on lovely South African greens like some!)
Pete's putting lesson…go get a new putter…end lesson hahahahhahaha
I dont know how much energy to put into the putt and ball
If LIV offers a big bag of take it. Remember PGA took the bag so should anyone else who can.
Good stuff…..as the old saying goes putting is key to your score, practice makes permanent 👍
Great video! Made a huge improvement in my score thank you!
Where is this course?
Great video again.
Very best😄
Thank ya sir. Been looking for putting instruction
Thanks, Pete, excellent drills.
Solid lesson!
Love this.
I was taught putting about 40 years ago. I was told to set up two chairs with a broom handle resting on them and then slide my putter back and forward along the pole. Although in my 80s now , I still sink more than my fair share.
