If you are consistently shanking irons or have started shanking irons all of a sudden, then you are in the right place.

In this golf lesson, PGA pro Kerrod Gray and Chris Mayson demonstrate how placing a head cover on the outside of the club will encourage a more centered strike on the club.
In my experience this is the fastest way to fix a shank.

there is nothing more frustrating than shanking your approach shot into the green so in this video you’ll learn our favorite drill to ensure that this never happens again let’s get stuck in okay Chris that one’s relatively flush but sometimes the word that no one likes to say shank does occur dreaded yeah and you would be in a bit of trouble if that happened right so what I want you to do is you’re going to set up and I’m going to show players at home my favorite drill to help rectify the shank so set up to that golf ball so I want you to show us what the club path and how the club would come into the ball would look like for a shank perfect now when this occurs it’s not because it’s hitting the outside sometimes but nor uh it’s not because it’s hitting the outside it’s actually hitting right on the inside of the golf club the rounded part that’s what causes it to shoot directly right so there could be a multitude of things in the golf s increas that encourages the shank but we want simple easy actionable advice so we’re going to use this head cover and put in a specific position to encourage players to not shank it so set up to that ball for me we’re going to place it on the outside of the club now you want to put this in what could be somewhat of an uncomfortable position right now what this does is it’s going to move your intention with what you do and your swing’s going to feel very very different just from putting something in the way we want this feedback to ensure that instead of getting caught up in the technicalities simple outcome objective to try and strike that ball in the center of the club face now has been flushing it all morning but he’s going to go ahead and hit one right now Chris can see dead straight a lot closer to the center of the face now what did you feel in your body then Chris when you hit that shot that was really interesting I actually felt like I needed to move away from the golf ball and I felt like I was almost moving into my left heel so that g that helped me kind of stay in posture and I actually hit a little bit off the toe um just because I felt like I was moving away from that head cover yeah and in terms of Improvement it’s always good to exaggerate uh the opposite end of the spectrum from what you’re doing because that’s going to be the fastest way to improve now if you set up to where that golf ball would lay and we would see the player who is shank is actually going to do the opposite right so as you swing to the top they’re going to start to move more in towards the golf ball and you can see that would hit the inside of the golf club and in this case hit that head cover as well so this is an incredible exercise to work on one of the key fundamentals of golf which is striking the golf ball towards the center of the club phase so Chris let’s hit another one down there for me beautiful just like that so look if you are struggling with shanking the golf ball you’re hitting it too much on the inside of the club excellent little drill you can use grab yourself a cobra head cover put it down on the ground just on the outside of the golf club and that will help reenter your strike and help you hit better shots

  1. I fixed my shank but not by fixing my intention. I had to fix my club path. Two drills set me straight. This is a band aid fix….for me anyways.

  2. I have shanked the ball but not by hitting the hosel. I figured out that my swing path that was causing the problem. At close chip shots my swing bath was almost straight back and forth which caused my club head to turn at an 'outside-in' position at ball contact thus spinning the ball to the left (I'm left handed.) I was able to fix it by making an abbreviated path similar to my full swing; slightly rotating my body in the backswing. This allowed the club head square up at ball contact.

So when people say they are shanking does not mean they are always hitting the hosel.

  3. I've done this drill and hit it flush 10 out of 10 times.I then go on the course and shank a 6 Iron off a perfect lie swinging with good tempo? Weight on laces, good balance, no early extension and taking the club back straight….?
