đŸ§© Final Verdict

The Ping i240 irons represent a smart evolution of Ping’s i‑series: blending players’ iron feel and control with increased forgiveness and higher launch characteristics. Reviews universally praise the soft impact feel, improved spin control, and strong performance on off‑centre hits. While their styling may split opinion among traditionalists, the i240 sits comfortably at the intersection of performance, customization

Hey everybody, it’s Andros of Golf Academy. Just as you thought you got rid of me, I’ve appeared again. It’s been a long time since I’ve done any YouTube stuff. As you know, people who watch my videos over the years, I disappear now and again and have little breaks from YouTube and pop up when something catches my eye. And today, something has caught my eye. Um, I want to talk to you about Ping’s latest launch. It’s the Ping I240 iron. Really interesting. Going to give you a full review. Stay tuned. We’ll tell you all about it. So, first of all, good to be back. Had a big long layoff from YouTube. Um, just need sometimes I just need to walk away and just kind of like have a break and come back to it a fresh. So, apologies for those of you have uh might have missed my videos. Probably not too many of you have missed my videos, but um I’m here and we’re going to talk about a really interesting product today. It’s the Ping I240. Got released, where are we? We’re approaching the end of July 2025. Got released about a week ago, something like that. And I think Ping weren’t quite planning on releasing this iron just yet. But the British Open, the Open as they like to call it, was last week and he knew a lot of the tour players were going to have this new iron in the bag. So they thought, we might as well get it released because it’s going to be out there and with social media, everyone’s going to know it’s there, so let’s just release it. So this obviously replaces the i230, but I think the i240 really does take this club into a different category, which we’ll talk about in a minute. So, what we’re going to do is the usual. We will talk techy specky stuff for about four or five minutes and then we’ll go into the hitting procedures and we’ll hit some shots and we’ll tell you how it looks and feels and all the rest of it. So, if you’re not interested in all the techy specky bit, just advance the video on and uh get to the the hitting. But anyway, I know lots of you like to know a bit about the club. All this stuff’s just taken off the website. So, if you want to really do a deep dive and look at it yourself, just go on to the Ping website. So, what have we got here? We’ve got tour inspired iron which provides added forgiveness with the control look and feel that will appeal to a wide range of skill levels. Now I think in the previous sort of eye series is the 230 and I think it was 210 before that. I did is lovely iron but didn’t have a huge amount of forgiveness. So it kind of limited the type of golfer who would want to play it. generalizing a little bit, but it would have been the golfer who was maybe um a better, more consistent ball striker, wasn’t worried about the forgiveness, just wanted the look. I think where they’ve gone with 240, as you can see, as I gave you some overheads from above, they’ve definitely made the cavity deeper on the back, they’ve still kept the look of the club to appeal to sort of the players look. It’s very tailor made P790 in that sort of small aer head I guess titalist AP2s going back into that sort of range. You know the style of club I’m talking about. It looks amazing. It’s all the play all the clubs in the ping range now have this matte finish to them which looks really pleasant on the eye. You don’t get a lot of glare when it’s sunny. Um, so a lower CG, CG standing for center of gravity in Ping’s highest launching player style model gives you more distance and control with the ability to consistently stop the ball. So slightly higher ball flight coming down of a little bit more backspin basically. Let’s do and have a look at some of the other stuff which it’s telling us about. I’m not going to bore you with all of this. It’s there if you want it. Forgiveness was feel a lighter badge with elastimemer insert. They’ve been using elasta for a long time have ping and it basically improves the feel. It saves weight that’s relocated to increase the MOI another buzzword moment of inertia for game improvement forgiveness. Think of MOI really as just making the club easier to hit and a bit more forgiving. So the weight that this saved in here they can replace internally. weight savings allowed engineers to lower the CG, center of gravity for more distance control and higher launch. And there’s nothing revolutionary about that. Um, it’s been going on for years, you know, repositioning CG, but they’ve done it in this club in quite a clever way, which gives us the best of both worlds. True cavity back design. More traditional cavity back design signifies perimeter weighting. So bigger sweet spot most notably in the longer mid irons while maintaining a clean player style look. Smooth turf interaction to a proven grooves and a player preferred shape. Excellent. Like it. Let’s go and have a quick peek at specs which always interests us. I’m always interested in lofts. Lofts, as you know, have just progressively got stronger and stronger. Not unusual now to see pitching wedges down at 40, 41, 42 degrees, creating this big gap where you kind of need two gap wedges to get to your sand wedge, which, you know, who are we kidding here? Strengthening the loss, making us feel like we hit the ball further. We’re just turning pitching wedges into nine irons. Is it necessary? Probably not. But I think all manufacturers have gone too far down the road now to come back. So it’s probably here to stay for a little while. Uh if not forever. But have a look at the lofts of the i240s. What I would call genuine lofts. 7 iron 33° giving us a 45 degree pitching wedge loft. which means we only need to go one gap wedge at 50 and then you get into your I 54 58 combinations or 56 60 you know and it’s become the norm now to carry four wedges and some people are carrying five wedges because we’re not carrying the long irons anymore three iron in the set which you don’t see that often except in players irons 19 degree loft so three the pitching wedge and utility wedge which is description of gap wedge. Quick look at shafts. We’ve got a lot to look at, but we won’t bore you with all of them. Very heavily into these pro motor shafts these days of ping and it is a great shaft. The nippon NS Pro modus to a 115 that that signifies the weight and it’s not always what it says on the shaft. Um, a 115 is actually 109 grams and 103 grams in regular. And then we’ve got the 105 which actually is close to its weight it says on there. This is their stock shaft for most models. Uh, the AWT which is fitted in the G440s. We’ve got Altac Blue Graphite. We’ve got KBS Tour. We’ve got Dynamic Gold 120s. We’ve got the good old dynamic gold. Still going strong. How old is this shaft? Dynamic gold. Must have been going now for I don’t know 35 years old and still going strong. Did a fitting for a guy the other day. Always use dynamic gold S300s. Wouldn’t use anything else. Dynamic Gold Mid 100, Dynamic Gold Mid15. And we’ve got all the flexes ranging from soft regulars, regulars, stiff, and extra stiff. All different weights, all different launch heights dependent on your ball flight. So, if you can’t find the shaft in that lot, then you’re not there ain’t a shaft that suits you. There’s got to be a shaft in there. Grips with Ping. I love the simplicity of the grips. They’re like, “Okay, we’re not messing around here offering 28 different grips. It’s a Tour Velvet, guys. Tour Velvet 360 in six different sizes. You can get a tour velvet cord, um, which is an upchargeable grip. In the UK, to be honest, I don’t think the Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord is is that good a grip. It seems to wear out pretty quickly. Doesn’t feel that good. But the tour velvet, I was watching the open last week and I was just amazed how many tour players still use tour velvet. It’s, you know, just in the black. Obviously, some of them are using corded grips and lots of others, but a lot of them are using the tour velvet. And this grip size can be customized to suit the size of the hand, which is really important. Generalizing again, the grip diameter is a little bit too thin. Your hands may work a little bit too actively, may overrelease the club. Consequently, if the grip’s a little bit too thick, then you’re not going to release the club in time and you might block it out. Right. Not always going to happen, but this is what we do when we do fittings. We look at grip size. It’s really important. Let’s hit some. Be right back. Time to hit a few. Another quick look at this. It’s cosmetically I think it’s a beautiful club. The other thing you’re going to see people doing with this club is blending sets together. So, within the Ping range at the moment, there are several models down at the players end. We’ve got these blueprint clubs. We’ve got the blueprint blueprint T. Put some pictures up there, which is pretty much a true blade, you know, ultra difficult to hit. But the Blueprint S, this one up here, seems to be a really popular club with the tour guys and the really good players. And what I think we’ll see them doing is blending together the I240s in the longer clubs. Maybe I’m just guessing here maybe three to seven iron in I240s or maybe 3 to six iron and then going into the blueprint irons maybe from six through to pitching wedge or gap wedge. Now what they’ve done is they’ve kept the lofts all the same and the blueprint and the I240s. So there’s a seamless sort of change into mixing these up. So a bit more forgiveness in the long irons, bit more precision in the short irons. So that’s the kind of thinking which makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? Um, what have I got? I’ve got a seven iron as usual, 33°. I’ve got it set to an orange dot, which is 2° flat, which suits me. Stops me trying to hit it left. standard length. I’ve got the Pro Modus 115 in stiff and I’m on my favorite short hole. This is a golf club called the Farms in America, which I believe is near San Diego. You’ll correct me if I’m wrong. Um it’s a great golf course. I love it playing it. And it’s this is the 16th hole. I’ve got like a 160 flag and we’re going to hit a few shots and see how we get on. So, uh here we go. I240. Go. Just turned it over a little bit as you can see there. And we know that when we turn the ball over, I’ve got the club face closing a little bit more. For those of you who don’t know my golf swing, it’s not a thing of beauty, folks. I attack the ball too much from the inside and then I have to release the overrelease the club. And on this one, you can see my swing path attacks the ball eight degrees from in to out. And I have to really work the club face to try and for good shots to try and hold off a little bit. On that one, I’ve released it a little bit more. So, what happens there is the carry distance goes up a little bit and I potentially lose a little bit of backspin. But what I’ve got to start with there is 83 mph club speed give me 112 ball speed, a 160 carry. I’d like to see a little bit more backspin than just under 5,000 there, but that was more the strike of my fault. I’m going to try and hold this one off a little bit, deliver a little bit more loft, and that should increase the back spin. Yeah, that’s a little better. That’s a decent shot. In fact, that’s going to end up pretty close. We’ll take that. So, that was a much better delivery. didn’t hit it quite as much from the inside. Much better spin rate. Spinning at 5,788, launching at 18 degrees. Pretty low ball hitter. Carries 157. And I’ve set these greens to quite soft. So, you saw how quickly that ball stopped. And hey, we’ve knocked that to 1.5 in. It’s a kicking birdie. How does it feel? How does it look from above? Have a little players view looking down at the club. I love the shape of this. It really suits my eye. It’s not ultra thin top edge, but certainly thin enough. I love the rounding in the toe. I love the minimal offset, and I’m loving this matte finish. It looks great. It’s not a forged face, this, remember. Um, but it does still feel soft. I think with this elastima insert, which they’ve put in the back, it really does. And I’ve had this debate many times on YouTube about the difference in feel between a forge club and a cast club. Some people are much more sensitive to the feel. Personally, I’m not. I don’t really care if I’m using a cast or a forge club. It doesn’t matter to me, but I know to some people it does. And you know, we’re all a little bit different. I should probably stop after two shots, after that last shot. Things can only get worse. But we’ll hit another couple. turned it a little bit again. Increase the yardage. Back spin will probably come off again, but it’s dry. It’s playable. I’d take that if we’re in the real world. 157 carry. Again, it’s a great club. It’s a great club. I mean, this is not an ultra difficult club to hit. And I think people would say, you know, within the ping range, you’ve got the G440, which is their bread and butter. all singing all dancing cavitybacked iron. This is not quite as easy to hit as a G440, but it’s not that far off. Then you’ve got the I530, which is the hollowheaded forged face, which is a fantastic club. Much stronger lofts, a real distance club, but there really is a club for everybody. I’m really going to try and hold this off a little bit. See how I struggle to hold the club off? Everything’s getting released here. They’re all pretty good shots, you know. That’s how many shots we hit? Five shots. Four shots. Hit the target. Again, good numbers. 154 carry. Very consistent on the spin rate. We’ll hit one more. Take that. And then we’ll just have a quick look at the average numbers here for you. So really, really great golf club. I love it. Really do. So just for those of you who like numbers, we’ve got an average ball speed here of 111, average launch of 18°, average spin of five, let’s call it 55, and an average carry of 157. Good numbers, pretty consistent. If we look at club speeds, some of you into club speeds rather than ball speeds. You can see I’m not really gunning at these at all. 83 miles an hour. And I’ve got a stiff shaft in here. I could probably get away these days with hitting a regular regular shaft might increase my launch and spin. So I can play around with different shafts and kind of make them work. But um it’s very impressive. Right, let’s talk nitty-gritty price. In great British pounds at the moment, and this would be for a set of seven irons. So, let’s say for a pitching wedge, okay, you’re looking at around about ÂŁ1,250. We’ll put the conversion rate down the bottom there of what that is in US dollars, so it gives you a bit of an idea. So 1,250 expensive premium, but you know, most golf clubs now have got expensive. You don’t get a lot for your money in the UK for a seven iron set of irons for less than ÂŁ1,000. You know, whereas somewhere between 900 and,300 kind of covers most irons in the UK at the if they’re forged or steel or whatever. If you’re putting graphite into these, which probably not a lot of people are going to do, then you’re adding about anotherÂŁ100 per set if you’re going to go graphite. But I would think the vast majority of people who are buying this club would go with steel shafts. So there we go. It’s the i240 iron. Absolutely love it. It’s another winner from Ping. Hope you enjoyed the video. Nice to be back. See everybody again. Um, will I be chucking out loads of content going forward? Probably not. But I will pop up now and again when there’s something which catches my eye. But uh, yeah, thanks for watching the video. Do appreciate it. If you’re new to the channel, thanks for watching. Maybe think about hitting that subscribe button. And if you thought the video is any good, you could give it one of those thumbs up. Post your comments down below. Going to be honest, I won’t reply to all of them. I might reply to a few of them, but I do appreciate the interaction. Um, but I will try and and pass comment if something there is credible and relevant. I will try and say yes, I agree or no, I don’t or offer you some advice if I can do that. That’s it. I’ve babbled enough as usual. Andrew Ainsworth signing off. Bye for now.

  1. Nice to have you back Andrew!
I always look out for your videos when they are released.
Enjoy the rest of the season.

  2. Great video Andrew and nice to see you back on YouTube. I currently game i210 irons and had them 5 years, I went for an iron fitting when i230 was released, my numbers were identical to my i210s and personally I couldn't feel any difference, so I couldn't warrant the cost of upgrading. Do you think there would be much difference with these i240s compared to my i210s ?
    Many thanks, Vince.

  3. I very much appreciate your perspectives Andrew. Your reviews are honest and straight forward. BTW, I live just a hop, skip, and a jump from The Farm Country Club in San Diego, CA. It's a wonderful track.

  4. Manufacturing has gone bananas, set your bag by degrees and beat these companies at their own game.

  5. Gamed i25, i200, i210, i230, Blueprint S and i240. The i210 was my favorite (games 5 years) then tried i230. The i230 lasted TWO rounds in my bag. That's after 5 years with i210. The BPS worked great, just required a little more work. I ordered the i240 with the AWT 2.0, and from order to my door in 8 days (with the AWT 3.0). It's incredibly soft, gained 4-6 yards more than the i210 and i flush my 4 & 5 iron with greater frequency. When I finished my 3rd round with the i240, I immediately ordered the matching gap wedge. Side note; the i230 was the worst performing of the entire I series. When I buy a club based on looks. It's the look of the offset, top line, and finish, not the badging. I get paired with a lot of dolts with great looking clubs in their bag that hack their way to 115. It's unreal how many comments I've read about the looks of an inconsequential part of a golf club. Clearly these aren't "players".

  6. 6:47 to clarify.. if you are pulling the shaft weights off the Ping site, you should make clear the shaft weights represent a 7 iron length.. that is in the small print at the bottom of the webpage, just fyi..

  7. I’ve been trying to order four of these irons to replace my Paradigms. I have four wedges, the strongest being 46 degrees and I play 5 hybrid, 4,7, and 9 metals. This club comes in “power” and “retro” lofts which have different soles. I can’t make four of either fit into my gapping scheme because of really strange loft selections by Ping. Love the clubs but I’m going to have to buy something else.

  8. Andrew, I enjoyed this review and your review of the JPX 925 Forged. I know they’re different lofts, but which of the two would you say is more forgiving?
