Chris Gotterup speaks to the media following the third round at The Open Championship
Hey Chris, how are you? Yeah. Uh, great play continues. Can you just kind of take us through your rounds a little bit and and what went well today? Yeah. Um, I really felt like I played well today. Um, really the only shot that I would like to take back is whole three. Um, but yeah, I mean it really hung in there well and grinded it out and, you know, try to pick off shots where I could and, you know, ended up with a good score today. Um, you know, this is probably pretty new territory for you at a major. Um, what does it feel like out there? I mean, clearly it’s not shaking you, but uh, this is uncharted grounds at the moment. Yeah, I mean, I feel like I’ve gotten a bit of taste over the last couple weeks of of what it feels like out there with Oakmont and and the Scottish Open and and stuff like that. So, um, I don’t I you know, I feel like it’s been it’s been fine. I mean, it’s definitely been fun. Um, a lot of people out here and um, yeah, just been fun. U, this is a very forward-looking question. A month ago, nobody would have been thinking about you for the Ryder Cup. My editor was just like, “You should go ask him the Ryder Cup question because now people are talking about it.” Uh, does it enter your brain at all? No, not at all. Not even a little. No, I I mean, I really just I’m just focused on this week and um, I really haven’t thought about it one bit and um, like you said a month ago, I really haven’t thought about it at all. Um, right. So, I mean, I’m just gonna focus on going playing well tomorrow. But there’s there’s one common theme which is keeping up with Scott, you know. So, what how do you do that? Yeah, I mean um they just asked me that over there and I said he’s been the best player in the world for the last couple years. So, fully expect him to go out and play a great round tomorrow. So, going to have to going to have to bring my best tomorrow, but I would have had to bring and I’m going to have to bring it anyways in in terms of being a final round in the major. And um you know, not just Scotty out there, there’s a lot of great players in the mix. Results wise, the first four months of your season, Chris, have been so different to the last couple. Is there any reason why you think that might be? I don’t know. I It’s a good question. I don’t know if I know the answer either. I just feel like I’m starting to get more comfortable and um I feel like I’m starting to understand my game better and how I operate and what kind of golf, you know, is needed at certain places. And I just feel like I’ve been I’ve been very in control of my misses and my my attitude and um it’s been good. I I don’t I don’t have an answer. I wish I had the I wish I had it. I would have used it a long time ago. Yeah. No changes off the golf course. Nothing like that. No, I mean my life off the course has been great. I mean, um yeah, I just, you know, something clicked and uh I’m going to ride it as long as I can. What’s your routine like here at night? What do you do between now and when you tee off tomorrow? Um, I think we’re going to go grab dinner somewhere. I don’t know if it’s here uh with my parents and then um we’ll probably try to sneak out and go get some ice cream somewhere and and chill and uh and then try to sleep as long as I can tomorrow. They like their ice cream here, don’t they? I’ve seen a lot. Yeah, it’s been it’s been pretty good so far this week. How would you characterize today? I’m sorry I got a little bit late, but uh just how you handled a Saturday here in the major after you’ve been putting yourself in position. Uh, like I said before, I mean, I felt like I played well today. I mean, really not much I would take back from today. There were some tough T- balls out there and some tough pin locations and uh, you know, I felt like I took advantage when I when I could. You have the ability to be pretty explosive. Do you think you’re just put 14, but I mean, are you close enough where you think you make something happen tomorrow? I’m not really too worried about it. I mean, I’m just trying to go out there and play what I what I can do and uh play what the course gives me. And I’m really not too I’m not too worried about, you know, like I said this earlier this week, this is house money for me this week. I wasn’t even planning on being here come, you know, a week ago. So, um, anything’s a bonus and, you know, I fully expect to give it my best and we’ll see where that ends up. Where do you think you can take this what you’ve been doing the last two weeks from here? I mean, I’m just trying to ride it out as best I can and learn from, you know, why stuff’s working well and and uh, you know, just put it in my back pocket and and trying to take it to each tournament from there and learn along the way. So, it’s definitely been, you know, a nice learning process this last couple months and I feel like I’ve been doing a good job of, you know, piecing things together and and, you know, trying to figure out why stuff’s happening and, um, you know, why good or bad and how to use it for the future. Y thanks. Thanks.
