Tri-series are rare and far between, but they usually grab eyeballs with three teams vying for a trophy, rather than just two in a bilateral series. But that cannot be said for the ongoing tri-series in Zimbabwe. With two games to go for the final, South Africa and New Zealand are confirmed finalists – with hosts Zimbabwe losing three on the trot – and tomorrow’s clash between the same two sides will merely act as a precursor to the final on Saturday.
New Zealand have been prolific in the two games they have played so far this season. In their opener against South Africa, they came out trumps in a collective performance with both bat and ball, while they eased past Zimbabwe in their second game. All their bowlers have been amongst the wickets this series while a rare top-order blip in the first game was rectified in their chase of 121 against Zimbabwe.
The new look South Africa team has outshone Zimbabwe on two occasions in this series – the second of which resulted in the hosts being knocked out. But came up short against New Zealand last week, in their first fixture. Like their opponents, their top-order has failed to click but it’s the middle-order that packs the punch with Rubin Hermann quickly settling in while Dewald Brevis has been a breath of fresh air batter. The bowling department, despite being changed every game so far, has played its part to give the team the adequate balance they need.
