LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The Country Club of Lincoln has closed its golf course for the next 11 months, as it begins what officials say is “by far the biggest project this club has ever taken on.”

Located just south of 27th and Van Dorn streets, the 106-acre course has been around for more than a century. Golf Course Superintendent Ryan Krings said the $6 million renovation will replace just about every aspect of that space, aside from the clubhouse itself.

He adds that it’s been about 30 years since the last major renovation to the course.

“It’s important that we’re staying modern, up to date,” Krings said. “We want to be sustainable long-term in this area.”

Another reason for the big change is to establish “tee equity.” That means shortening many of the holes to make the course fairer to all ages and skill levels. Krings said the changes will also increase safety and replace trees, greens, fairways, and even add a new pond.

The club currently has about 700 members, 400 of whom golf regularly. There’s also about 250 employees who will be impacted by the closure.

While business will slow down for awhile, Krings said the club’s membership voted for this to set up for the future.

“We’re taking this golf course from the paying membership for 11 months, which is never easy to do,” he said. “We’re gonna take a little hit, but we think the long-term benefits far outweigh that.”

Planning for the project started back in 2019, with construction kicking off earlier this month. Krings said they hope to have the course back up and running by next June.
