PRESS Staff Report
Organizing efforts are underway for an inaugural charity golf tournament whose namesake helped secure the future of the South Padre Island Golf Course, located in Laguna Vista.
When the South Padre Island Golf Course and its corresponding neighborhood went bankrupt, and the bank was ready to sell it to the highest bidder, Bill Carr negotiated on behalf of its property owners, allowing
them to submit the first bid. With his extensive legal experience, Carr helped fellow property owners organize to establish a corporation, thereby maintaining control over their properties.
As a result, several owners became stockholders of the South Padre Island Golf Course. This resulted in road improvements, increased property values, a new restaurant, and an improvement in the overall condition
of the golf course. The stockholders continue the work that Carr helped start.
Carr was also a dog lover, so when it came time for friends, family, and volunteers organizing the golf tournament to choose a benefactor, it was obvious to them that the money raised should be donated to the
Laguna Madre Humane Society.
The First Annual Bill Carr Memorial Golf Tournament was intentionally scheduled for August 23, 2025, which would’ve been Carr’s 82nd birthday. “Bill always loved his surprise birthday celebrations,” said his
wife, Mare.
Organizers are currently enrolling teams. Deadline to register for the tournament is August 16, 2025. There is a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start and a four-person scramble. The cost is $400 per team, payable by cash or
check only; credit cards will not be accepted.
First-place fishers will vie for $1,000 per team, while second-place finishers will be awarded $800, and third-place finishers will receive $600.
To register, contact (956) 943-4653 or email: jhodge@spigolf.com.
Additionally, organizers are welcoming team sponsors, hole sponsors, and raffle prize items (gift certificates, restaurant certificates, artwork, services, etc.). The sponsorship cost is $500, which includes teams of
four. Once again, all proceeds will benefit the Laguna Madre Humane Society.
For more sponsorship information, contact Kathy at (405) 694-6504. The deadline for hole sponsorship logos is August 1, 2025.
The Laguna Madre Humane Society became a 501(c) (3) non-profit animal welfare corporation in 1993.
In 2012, Beth Fedigan founded the Laguna Madre Humane Society Clinic to provide low-cost medical care, including spay and neuter procedures, dental cleanings, surgeries, vaccinations, and medications—both
preventive and prescribed. The Laguna Madre Humane Society is not an animal shelter.
The Laguna Madre Humane Society is located at 417 1/2 E. Maxan St., Port Isabel, and is open for walk-ins Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 12-4 p.m.
Since opening in 2012, it has performed spay and neuter surgeries on more than 13,000 cats and dogs.
Officials at the Laguna Madre Humane Society said that they are honored to be the recipient of the proceeds of the 1st Annual Bill Carr Memorial Golf Tournament.
