Sergio Garcia explains that on the 2nd tee, after hitting a poor drive, he swiped his driver in frustration, unintentionally breaking the shaft in half, which surprised him as it was not his intent and had never happened before despite similar actions. He speculates the shaft might have had a flaw, as it broke in the middle rather than at the neck. Garcia also expresses confidence in his ability to make the European Ryder Cup team, emphasizing his experience and past success, particularly at Bethpage, and believes he can bring valuable contributions to help the team succeed in the challenging environment of the upcoming Ryder Cup.
Well, tell us, how’s your sum up your return to the open? How much have you enjoyed it this week? Uh, yeah, I mean, it’s always it’s always amazing to to be back here and play in front of these crowds and these kind of golf courses. Um, I would love to play better, of course, but uh but yeah, it’s always it’s always a treat and everybody knows that this is my favorite my favorite major. So, um you know, it’s it’s always good to be back. Maybe the last chance to impress the European captain and you played really well today. So, how was it as a militian for Ryder Cup? I don’t know. You’ll have to ask him, but um I don’t think it’s the last chance uh to be totally honest. I think that there’s still uh there’s still a good amount of weeks left and um you know, at the end of the day, I just got to do what I what I can. Uh I got to try to to play the best I can and um you know, and then we’ll we’ll see what uh what happens. Now facure here suggests or proves that your form has been very good for the last year or so, hasn’t it? Uh the last the last two years has been good. Obviously uh a little bit of a dip after after the Masters. Um played nicely last week uh at Balorama. Um I played I played nicely in Dallas. I just had couple bat finishes in a couple of rounds and uh and then obviously played very nicely in in uh in Balorama. Didn’t didn’t really put well at all and still finished top 10. Um and then obviously this week I felt like my my game was on and off a little bit and um still managed to shoot three three rounds on the par. Obviously the conditions were uh were quite nice uh yesterday and today but um you know I guess we still have to go out and and do it. Just reride the cup again. Can you tell us how much you’ve spoken to Luke about it and how much it would mean to you to get back into that team? Yeah, we’ve we’ve been talking. So, there’s no uh it’s not a secret that that we have been talking and um it would mean the world um you know to to me to be there. Obviously, if I can help the team, that’s that’s my main goal. I’ve always said it. So, um, you know, I think that I can bring things uh to the team that that um to any team that that would probably need it, but uh you know, but obviously at the end of the day, he’s got to he’s going to make whatever he thinks is the best decision for for him and and his team, you know, at the end of the day. So, you and you and John were so effective together in America. It’s going to be uh the same sort of hostile environment. You’ve got experience of that. That would be invaluable again alongside John who wants you there, doesn’t he? I mean, you would you would think so. Uh yeah, I mean I obviously John and I are good friends. We we did well when we playing in u in Whistling Straits. Uh I was actually watching a couple of the videos on YouTube this week about some of our matches there. Um so we we had a great time. I think that we gel nicely together. Obviously it’s easy to play with John because he’s so he’s so good. So um but you know it’s still still a couple months to go and uh you know I wish I could I have a crystal ball and I could see the future but unfortunately I cannot. Can I just ask you just in the greater context you’ve been assured by Luke that the decision is purely on golf in terms rather than any political considerations if you Yeah. Yeah. For sure. Yeah. That’s that’s the that’s what I’ve that’s what he’s uh he’s told me and and uh yeah, it’s just uh it’s just about how my game is and and what I can I can bring uh what I can uh add to the team. Uh as simple as that. Just to add to that, he he said ahead of the PGA that he was going to prioritize experience in his picks over younger rookies. Have you had that same conversation with him? Has that given you a little bit of extra hope? Well, I mean, you know, we we’ve had a a few conversations. At the end of the day, yes, you obviously going going into into the US, going into New York. Um, experience is always is always good. Uh, mostly because you’re still going to have some rookies there and and I think those experienced guys have a great job to do there. uh to make sure that those rookies uh know what they’re getting into. Even though Lucas has been doing a great job of um you know uh bringing a lot of information to to uh to the potential players that that are going to be there. Um but uh but at the end of the day, you know, when when you’re out there on the course, it’s nice to have one of those experienced guys to put their arm around you and and make you feel like don’t worry, you’re I got you. and and when you know when people are shouting at you and and screaming and and wishing you all the all the bad things that you can think of. Um so um yeah, it’s it’s easy to it’s easy to kind of kind of go uh get in in like little shell and kind of get smaller. Um, I was very fortunate uh to play with Jesper uh in 99 obviously as a rookie in the US and uh and he made it he made it so easy for me. Obviously, we played we played great, but uh but he made it so much fun and so uh so easy for me to to really enjoy the moment and and and enjoy the Radic Cup even being away and and you know, as as tough as as the crowds might be regardless regardless of what happens in September, is captaincy back on the table for you in the future? Yeah, I mean obviously that that’s something that um you know it’s it’s uh I don’t want to think about it yet, but uh but it’s something that obviously uh it would be a nice thing to a nice honor to to have. Um but you know I really I really don’t want to think about that right now. You know I got my my mind in other one more on today. How many what would you have shot with 14 clubs? Sorry. What would you have shot today with 14 clubs? I started with 14. Uh I don’t know. Maybe maybe I would have maybe I would have shot worse. Uh you never know. So yeah, it’s uh was that was that the fire in you again and being frustrated that you haven’t played even better this week? To be totally honest. Uh you know the last two and a half, three months have been a little bit tough. uh the way the way I’ve played and I’ve controlled myself very very well. Um and to be totally honest, I didn’t feel like I did that much on the second TE. Obviously, I didn’t hit a good drive and I kind of I I didn’t like smack it straight down. I kind of like swiped it back. And I’ve done that 50 times and I’ve never broken a club. And and the shaft just snapped in half. I was I was actually surprised. I wasn’t trying to break it. And uh and I was actually surprised when I saw that because usually if it breaks, it breaks by the neck. Yeah. And it broke in the it broke in the middle of the shaft. So I was I don’t know. I I don’t know. Maybe maybe the shaft had a little a little thing there that u that um because I I didn’t feel like with what I did it should have broken. Um but you know, it’s what it was. And uh and then I got some good practice when I threw it. You should you should have had a cricket. Yeah. But yeah, you remember that? I do very well. Started hitting sixes. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you, Sergio. It was a long time ago that you had success at FH. Do you think that should factor into the decision? Well, it was a long time ago because I haven’t played in a long time. Um I don’t know. We’ll see. I mean, it depends. That’s that’s obviously something nice to to have. Like I’ve I’ve done really well there pretty much every time I’ve played there, I think. So, uh, but I’m sure the course is going to play totally different than than when we played u the US Open and the and the Barklays, I think it was. Um, so you know, it’ll be interesting to see how how it plays. You know, usually usually the uh the American team sets it up with not a lot of rough and and kind of given a lot more room to uh for their players to to to be able to kind of freewhe it a little bit. Uh and um you know, it’s going to be interesting to see how the course will play like that. Okay. Thank you. That is

It would be great to have Sergio participate in the Ryder cup and pairing with John Rahm is must watch golf
Rahm isn’t even a lock, never mind #174 Garcia 🤣 Not a fan, his ship has sailed
I didn't feel like, with what I did, it should have broken 🤣
Hope he wasn't gobbing in the cup.
I dont think the team would be better with a 45 year old Spaniard that cant putt
I think it's fair enough to ask Sergio about breaking his driver and it was done in a respectful way but please start asking everyone else who does it too
I once saw a guy hit a pitching wedge and the shaft snapped in the follow through and the head went straight up in the air and came down on the back of his neck, no joke. It fractured one of his vertebrae (or just chipped the bone or whatever) and he had to stop playing but it is not super uncommon for shafts, given the stress we put them under, to have some out of pocket failure.
The boy who never grew up.
This guy is a clown 🤡
He has been a disrespectful clown for his entire career. Throwing shoes, throwing clubs, spitting in cups, thrashing bunkers, ruining greens…don't forget his racist comments about Tiger. Glad he's a LIV with fools like Reed, DJ, Phil, and Cam.
He probably messed his diaper too. Hopefully he enjoyed some alone time with his sippy cup after the round to calm himself.
He can cook me fried chicken any day
that ship has sailed into the dark fog
Bitter aura all around him
