Reaction from England’s Matt Fitzpatrick after Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No.1 player, dominated the British Open on Sunday at Royal Portrush. He led by as many as seven shots and shot a 68 to win by four shots. Scheffler won his second major of the year after the PGA Championship. Now he goes to the U.S. Open next year with a chance to complete the Grand Slam. Harris English was runner-up. Rory McIlroy started slowly and never had a chance before an adoring gallery in his native Northern Ireland.
Li Haotong of China (70), Matt Fitzpatrick (69) and USA’s Wyndham Clark (65) tied for fourth in the final standings.
Um yeah, first time being in contention for the open. Um you know, it’s a a big step forward. I’ve been in contention for two of the four majors this year, which is which is really nice. Last time I did that was 2022. So um you know, a lot of good stuff to build on knowing that my my game’s there to to give it a go. Just got to do a few more things to to get it over the line again. Yeah, I I feel like my I’d argue, has been as good as I’ve ever ever hit them. Um, my driving’s probably suffered a little bit because of that. Um, but, you know, I’ve shown for for certainly three days that my driving was good enough, approach play was good enough this week to to give me a chance. Um, I puted really poorly for me this week. You know, I’ve held a couple of good ones today. Um, but not felt comfortable with how I know I can put and and I think, you know, Scottish Sheffler is a different class obviously. He’s he’s literally a sh a full shot pretty much better than um the next best player in the world, let alone myself who’s not the second best player in the world. So um yeah, it’s um it’s definitely closer than than where it was and um I definitely feel like there’s there’s there’s room to improve and and you know can can move forward.
