in for doing this. Shane, we we we’ve just seen obviously the ruling. Um so you played just so beautifully today. You didn’t deserve that. Um so tell us just exactly what happened from your perspective. Uh well, I didn’t know anything happened until walking up to 15 fairway and then um rules official come over and told me that you know there’s a possibility the ball moved in the 12 to my second shot and I uh so I said I I asked him how many shot penalty is that if it did and he said two. So obviously then I’m feel like I’m on the cut mark then which is not very nice and I felt like I played well on the way in and then just obviously waited to see and I mean yeah I was in there with the rules official and wasn’t arguing my case but I’m disappointed that they don’t have more camera angles on it. You know the one zoomed in slow motion. You know they’re trying to tell me if it doesn’t move from the naked eye if you don’t see it moving. It didn’t move. Um, I told him I definitely was looking down towards the ball as I was taking that practice swing and I didn’t see it move. So, but um I had to take the penalty because like I I’m still not sure to be honest whether it was or not, but I had to take the penalty because I can’t have my name talked about or tossed around like that. And I just, you know, I get on with it. It’s obviously very disappointing. Um, I felt like I played really, really well today. Uh, and yeah, that’s that’s hard to take. It’s um, but look, I’ll just have to dust myself off and get out there tomorrow and um, yeah, give it a go. Look, you are pretty much on the fringes of contention at two under par and now you’re back, you know, close to where the cup mark is on on level pares. I I I understand. I understand that. But just the fact that you had to deal with this after the rules official spoke to you I think on the 15th but you still kept your concentration and your composure to make sure you made the cut. That has to be something you have to take out. Yeah, I played great on the way in. I hit some nice shots and you know left on the lip on 16 and 18 and missed a good chance on 17. So, um it could have been different, but um yeah, look, it’s a disappointing thing to happen to me, but you know, that’s golf. Uh onwards and upwards and it must feel unfair like a little bit, but I’m not going to like, you know, if the ball moved and I caused it moves, two shot penalty, the last thing I’m going to do is sit there and argue and not take the penalty and then get slaughtered all over social media tonight for a cheat. Like I’m not that bad. But you’re a player that’s called shots numerous times. I have. Yeah. And I would have if the ball moved I would have called it on myself and my head was definitely looking down at the ball and I didn’t see it moving. But I’m after signing for 72 there now. So um what did you actually do to move the ball? Because the club head didn’t go that close to the ball. It was like that far from the ball apparently blade of grass I hit and the ball moved a dimple or something. Yeah.

The video was certainly inconclusive. If the rule is, self report or witnessed then trust the player. Shane was unfairly pressured to take that penalty. I respect his decision but it was unfair to put him in that position.
The ball definitely moved after he took his practice swing. I’m not sure if that is a penalty under the R&A, I don’t think so in the United States.
Clear and obvious…. I think not… Maybe V. A. R is going to ruin golf aswell as football 🤮
Ridiculous, he wasn't trying to gain any advantage and it wasn't even clear in my opinion.
Shane Lowry is the new Patrick Reed
What a man
It didn’t move mate…
Feckin joke
Hey they had to pick on someone right ……. may aswell be a Irish man !
Fair play Shane. Nobody can accuse you of cheating. And thats a win in my eyes👏👏👏
I noticed it right away, they were super zoomed in while he was taking a practice swing and it barely moved. Bad luck and dumb rule
Class act, just keep moving forward Shane, never look back💯
Miles off the lead anyway
Shane is a gentleman with a good reputation for honesty. If he says it didn’t move, it didn’t move. That should be that.
Did some A-Hole call it in?? If it’s inconclusive and he did not see it, no freaking penalty. He’s never been anything but honest.
Good man. Very classy as we’ve come to expect. I imagine someone like Sergio would have reacted very differently!
What a joke. Shane Lowry is a class act. Horrible to happen but the man has enhanced his reputation….not that it matters to rules official.
This is a crap rule! He only got the penalty called on him because it was on camera. (Yes, I saw his practice swing and saw the ball settle.). You cannot tell me that no one else hitting out of the rough, in that condition, didn’t have their ball also settle. The only reason he is dinged two strokes is because the camera just happened to be on him.
This is a man, handled like a boss with the frustration evident, just wish the journalists would stop compiling it, he spoke about it, you can hear him handling it well, move on and give him some value for his next outing..
Dumb rule.
cheat
100% the ball moved- but I had the benefit of a HD tv replay in slo mo. No way Shane would’ve seen it.
Shane always penalized smh. Like at oakmont he didn’t get fairway relief. SMH
It moved but the penalty is ridiculous
Shane is the best.
Shane is a class act. I think he is a guy who would have called the penalty on himself had he thought the ball moved. Completely the opposite of cheater Patrick Reed.
stupidest thing in golf. if he says he didn't see it move and he called on himself before, just trust him man… club 1 ft aways….
Absolutely ridiculous rule. It’s all well if it’d clear and obvious but this wasn’t
The ball moved though?
100% ball move but v v dumb rule in this case he made zero attempt to improve his lie .. 2 shots? Ridiculous
What are the rules if he had seen the tiny movement? Could he call a referee and replace the ball with no penalty?
Comments would change if it was P. Reed.
Obviously moved and he would have definitely seen the lie change. It’s happened to all of us and there is no way he wouldn’t have seen the difference.
He acts like a baby with wind every week and gets away with it cos he’s a fat Irishman who likes a pint.
Players used to know that you shouldn't ground your club when a ball is precariously positioned. Because if you do, and the ball subsequently moves, even if you've walked away, you're deemed to have caused it to move. Jack Nicklaus was famous for not soling his club for this reason.
The way he didn't seem too pissed leads me to think he did see it move at the time
Doesnt the ball always move?
If it moved it moved- too many professional golfers PLACE THE CLUB and ground the behind the golf ball lol if anything they get away with this penalty all the time. Jack Nicklaus HOVERED THE CLUB above the ground providing 2 things- guarantees you aren’t responsible for any movement and MAKES YOU HIT DOWN naturally if you know you know 🤙🏻 it’s one thing to ground the putter on a green or even in the fairway but in any rough etc YOU ARE PROBABLY CAUSING THAT BALL TO MOVE and not calling it on yourself..
Shane was not looking down when his ball moved. The re-run showed that. But I blame Dan Hicks for initially bringing this up, not once, not twice. Then they showed the re-runs and Shane was nailed. 😫
