the tough enough cage. Let’s take a look at the tail of the tape. Christian Lucas is 28 years old, 5 years the elder of his opponent, Montreal Glover. Glover is 5’11, 2 in taller than his opponent, 74 in reach though, and that is a sizable difference. Leona local 89. Feel the power brings you this tale of the tape. All right, for our official introductions, we go inside the cage to Garrett Bertig. Coming up, moves now to the bantamweight division set for three. Two-minute rounds. Introducing first the blue corner. Standing 5’11, weighing 135.8 lbs, 1 and 0 early as an amateur, training out of syndicate MMA from Las Vegas, Nevada, Montreal, the Hitman Glover. And now introduce his opponent across the cage, fighting out of the red corner at 5’8, he weighed in at 135.4 4 lbs entering undefeated at 2 and 0. A product of steel MMA Aztec Boxing and Gamebred Training Center from San Diego, California, Christian Luke. [Music] [Applause] Referee Jonathan Romero. Jonathan Romero getting this bantamweight assignment. Three two-minute rounds. Amateur mixed martial arts set to unfold once again here inside the tough enough cage. TJ DeSantis along with Justin James live from the Observatory North Park in beautiful San Diego, California. Joe, here we go. Round one, fight. You ready, buddy? Are you ready? Here we go. We are underway. Lucas in the red tape. Glover in the blue tape. Man, you talked about that reach advantage of 74 to 69. And you look at these guys and you can see the length of rail. Beautiful kick. Southpaw versus orthodox. It’s one thing to have that reach. It’s another thing to wisely use it. We’ll see if either man can uh either deal with it or exploit it. Yeah, there’s no question. You saw a stance switch here. Comes out to southpaw stance getting a little exchange. Now it’s orthodox to orthodox. Now his opponent switches a stance. You know, for these guys only having three fights combined experience between each other to come out and look this fluid, switch their stance is pretty incredible. How important is it, Justin, to be able to, you know, swing with power and and uh, you know, quality from both sides, southpaw and orthodox? Well, I I firmly believe this is an evolution of the sport because when I was in the UFC, like I’m an orthodox fighter, I’ll switch to southpaw maybe 10% of my uh of the fight. Uh, and mostly if I’m compromised, when you see these young athletes coming out switching back and forth, being powerful and fast from both sides, it just really goes to show the evolution of the amateur MMA all the way up to the pros. There’s a lot of different looks from Orthodox compared to southpaw as well. Uh you know that body side is open when you uh go go lefty. Yeah, absolutely. And that left body kick is just a killer kicks from a southpaw. And I’m speaking from experience, guys. That left round kick to the body, especially if it’s set up with an overhand or something can be devastating in a fight finisher. Solid kick there to that lead leg of Glover by Lucas. Oh, shoot. Z like the setup off the leg kick inside the clinch now. 20 seconds. I think a takedown right now would steal the round. And a very competitive back and forth so far. [Music] Lucas maintaining that control here up against the fence. Final moments of the opening round. Two minutes in the books between these two gentlemen. Vanam weights inside the tough enough cage and uh Lucas pretty confident with the work he turned in there in that opening frame. Yeah, I thought he had some great great moments. You know, landed some good strikes. I think both guys had some good moments. You know, I think a takedown really could have stole around for either fighter. Uh I am going to give Lucas the round, but not by much. I could see a judge uh in this California commission giving the other round to Glover. had some solid kicks to that lead leg. We’ll see if Glover can make the adjustments here as we head into round number two. Stylistically, both of these guys fighting a very similar fight. Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, there’s no question. Both coming out switching their stance often. I know we talked about the first round, but it’s just so impressive these guys are with only three fights combined to be that explosive, that athletic. It really goes to show uh to their coaching. Look, you have Shane Shapiro in the corner over here. Just an incredible black belt level athlete. Our referee Jonathan Romero about to get these bantamweights back underway. Round two begins. [Music] Nice exchange there. Both men implementing that kicking attack. Yeah, Glover coming back out in the southpaw stance on that inside kick. Beautiful inside kick who gets paid one back right there. Be interesting to find out if Glover is a natural righty or lefty. And it’s tough to say because he’s switching so much and he started both rounds in southpaw, but now he’s been uh he’s been in orthodox for the last 15 20 seconds. So, we’ll see. And you know, you saw Lucas land that beautiful inside kick. I wonder if that might have hurt a little bit and that’s why he switched the stance. UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes, he would strike from the southpaw stance. When he go orthodox, that’s when you knew he was going to shoot. Sure. Absolutely. Yeah. A lot of guys are like that because, you know, an orthodox is right-handed for for uh boxing and striking, but it’s actually left-handed for wrestling. So, you see a lot of guys more comfortable shooting out of an opposite stance. Halfway point here of this second round. One down, one to go. This is when you really find out how quick those rounds are. Very competitive match. Both guys looking to stand and trade. you get the halfway point, you’re like, “Really? This is almost over?” I think after five amateur fights, it goes up to three minutes. For the longest time, mixed martial arts really didn’t have a unified amateur sort of uh rule set across the board, and that is one thing that California has really done a good job at sort of leading the pack on. And it’s important to get that experience. Oh yeah, there’s no question. The more cage experience you can get, and again, we our first fight was the decision. We’re already 20 seconds into the second round. We might see two decisions in a row. Just goes to show what Oh, he’s hurt. He’s compromised. His leg’s hurt. Oh, he senses blood. Lucas poured it on. Oh, dude. Now we go to fight IQ. He’s hurt. You’re beating him up against the fence. Why are you locking up with him? I think that was a a very big mistake here. Uh, but it just goes to show the experience and I think he’s going to watch this fight and realize that he made a mistake. Solid way to end the second round for one Christian Lucas. We’re going to head to round number three right after this. You’re watching Tough Enough live from San Diego. [Music] Go ahead, live your best life. [Music] back here in San Diego. Tough enough 146. Our last round ended with a bit of drama as Christian Lucas landed a nice kick to that right leg of Montreal Glover. Justin, uh, you know, we talk about being able to recover. Uh, hard to recover though from, uh, a strike like that that takes out one of your wheels. Yeah, there’s no question, B. You can see him walking really gingerely on it when he’s over in the corner here. And you saw earlier in the second round, he landed that quick and I mentioned that he switched his stance to an orthodox stance as he is right now. That really tells me that back leg is compromised and he can’t take any more damage to it. Those were shining guards. Yeah, I know. That’s it’s it’s crazy. Really seen the kicking attack evolve over the last five or six years in mixed martial arts. And the amateurs, they’re evolving with it, too. It’s a a weapon from day one for some of these guys. Yeah, there there’s no question about it. And Lucas right now has some very powerful kicks. Uh if I’m him and I’m in his corner and I have my opponent Glover switches back to that southpaw stance, we got to go back to the well and we go to attack that damage leg because you can see how he’s walking a little bit more gingerly than it was in the first round, second round. As he finished that round, uh Glover really will have a chance here uh to do some more damage to it if we can get Lucas to switch his stance again. How much is that going to uh affect his power too with his punches and we see these guys get Oh, it can definitely affect your power because again you can’t plant, you can’t put all the weight on that leg and especially if he’s a traditional southpaw. He’s come out in the first round and second round and now he’s switching to orthodox. Uh you know it might be a weaker side for him. Action right here in front of us. Glover able to spin and put Lucas on the fence. Po. You know, this round is going to dictate the fight. I think it’s one to one going into round number three. Both of these guys very skilled. Both of these guys undefeated. And both these guys don’t want to lose. TJ, right now, Lucas got a smile on his face as he’s able to make some space. Final 30 seconds could be a very important 30 seconds. Right there. Now he has to go back to that well. Yes. Oh man, just misses it. Great job by Glover. going back to his orthodox stance so he doesn’t take any more damage in that round. Final 10 seconds. Tell you what, TJ, it’s moments like this and I’m glad to be in the commentary booth and not in the judges booth because this is a glorious fight. Both these guys really want to win. Little shot after the bell. I don’t think it was intentional, but what a great way to finish that fight. Yeah, a brawl for it all. Three rounds in the books between these bantamweights. Both can hold their heads up high. You see Lucas, he thinks he’s done enough. We will await the judges scorecards here to find out who is the victor. Our judges decision is on deck. But before we get there, let’s take a look at the tough enough fight recap and see the case laid out for these gentlemen. Christian Lucas and Montreal Glover coming into this one both undefeated and fired up to put on a show. Oh, in a show, Dustin. That’s exactly what we got. Yeah, there’s no question. I won’t be surprised at the split decision. Saw some good shots. Uh, you know, Lucas being able to defend the whole time. Glover being able to defend the whole time. He really spun him off. You see another great shot there. Pins him up against the cage, but no guy. There’s that leg kick. That beautiful leg kick that played dividends later in the leg. Attacks the front leg there. You know, I think Glover wasn’t sure where those kicks were coming from. That’s why he ate that big one. Hurt him. Yeah, you see that misstep right there. right now. You know, Lucas needs to sense blood in the water and he needs to just go out and they ended up locking up with him. I think that was a early mistake going to our third round. These guys, this is how they ended that fight. Look at that. What a great way for these amateurs to end the fight. Unfortunately, you know, one guy’s going to win this fight and one guy’s going to learn from this fight. And I think both these guys are going to be back very, very strong. You can learn from a win as well. Yeah, that’s true. Yeah, you’re absolutely right. You know what? If if Glover comes out and gets this win, you know, he he got he took that damage in the second round. He learned how to how to battle through it. So, you’re absolutely right, GJ. All right, we’re going to learn who is the winner in this one, we go to Garrett Fertig. Ladies and gentlemen, after three rounds, we go to the judges scorecards for the decision. All three judges, Patrick Lingfenfelter, Felicia O, and Anna Kalzada see it the same. 29 28 for your winner by unanimous decision Christian Lucas. Christian Lucas getting it done, moving his record to three and 0. Very game. Montreal Glover and it was unanimous decision, but a split between the rounds and ultimately Christian Lucas gets his hand raised in really a phenomenal fight between two bantamweights on the rise. I think Montreal Glover going to be able to walk out with his head held up high. But uh yeah, tough he learned he can battle through a pretty vicious leg kick though. Yeah, there’s absolutely you’re absolutely right. you know, coming from the gym that he’s coming out of Syndicate MMA and the coaching staff he has, he’s going to watch this film. He’s going to get better from it. Something he really needs to focus on is checking those kicks. Man, you can see how much damage he took in the fight. I really want to see him come back, check those kicks, and or get his leg out of the way next time.
