What 27 Handicap Golf Actually Looks Like | Deer Park Golf Club
Hey everyone, welcome back to another episode of Diary of a High Handicapper with me, still your resident high handicapper. Very exciting episode for you today. It’s the fourth edition of my subscriber series challenge. I’m down here in Deer Park, which is located in Hot in North County, Dublin. Uh, and as you can see behind me, the views look absolutely phenomenal. So, very excited for this one. Not going to waste any more time. Let’s go meet our latest subscriber. Lads, how’s it going? Nice to meet you. How you doing, Alan? I’m the pro here. Okay, Davey. Davey, nice to meet you. And first and foremost, Davey, thanks very much for inviting me down to D Parker. Really appreciate it. Love doing the subscriber series. And from just walking out here, some of the views already look spectacular. So, I know we’re in for a great round of golf today. Uh, just a couple of questions before we get going, lads. Um, in terms of the holes and what we’re in for, what would you say is your is your favorite hole and the hardest hole? Alan, maybe start with you. Favorite and the hardest hole number two. So, it’s a par three, 220 yard par three with trees left, right, and long. I called it a scorecard record. If it was late in the round, maybe not. So, I always recommend to people seven iron pitching wedge, two put, get a bogey, and run. Okay. It can kill you straight off the bat. Okay. I might be hitting driver on that now. So, I hope there’s no local rule against that, is there? No. Once all you got to do is put down your score. Grand. Davey, what’s your favorite hole? My favorite hole is probably 16. Okay. And it’s the green. It’s a two-tier green. And the green is mad. Like, it’s Okay. It’s so deceiving with like people see lines that aren’t there and people are like, “Oh, that’s dead straight.” When it’s not. It’s it’s it’s a cracking hole. The index one cracking hole. The tree is just in the winter I love it. Okay. And the leaves grow back in the summer. Yeah. I’ll take a bow in that hole all day long. Okay. Now, as someone playing the course for the very first time, if you had to just give me a general strategy to get me through the round, what would it be? Two things. Because the course is so bouncy, definitely land about a club short, maybe 10, 15 yards short of the flag and always try to find the uphill putts. Okay. Short is golden. Yeah. Brilliant. Well, that should be good for me then cuz I tend to hit everything short. So, we’ll we go there, lads. Could have a good score today. So, and then finally, just what’s your favorite thing about uh being a member here and playing out in Der Park? That’s not bad, guys, is it? We’re eight, we’re 20 minutes from the airport, 20 minutes from the city center. We got all this vista here. We got three golf courses, a nine hole, and 180. A really good 180 pitch p course. Golf in paradise. Absolute paradise. And it’s a doorstep from everybody. That’s mine again. Like, I know we’re looking out here at Ireland’s Eye and Lamb Bay Island. Yeah. But over on here you can see the whole of North Dublin which is so basically in in the summertime the sun rises there and it sets there. So in the evening time you get all this beautiful sunset. So it’s just fantastic place. I think I’m going to be coming back to Der Park and we haven’t even played yet. So hopefully I’m a familiar face around there. Anyway lads look all I have to say now is play well and thanks again for inviting me out. Thanks a million cheers lads. Cheers. a little left. Okay, lads. Right. So, not a bad situation. Might have a tricky enough lie here just with the bunker, which I do. Yeah, this is going to affect me a little bit. Oh my god. Save the point anyway. But that could be the test of greens today, maybe. Right, lad’s first time ever hitting a driver on a par three. Let’s see how it goes. Right, while that idiot prepares to hit a driver on a par three, I just wanted to give you a quick update on the prize. I said it was going to be worth the wait, and it is. Whoever helps me shoot the best score during the subscriber series is going to win a free round with me at the K Club, one of Ireland’s top top courses. So hopefully you’ll agree that’s a hell of a prize. Okay, back to the action. Straight in. Yeah. All right, lads. Caught the bunker. And one part of my game I have not been practicing is the bunkers. While we’re out, that’s all I care about. Yeah. Thank you. She’ll be fine. Didn’t catch it, but All right, we’re down there. Okay, lads, it’s very deep again and this green is running away from me and they’re very quick. So, this is actually going to be a very difficult shot. I think I’m going to need to start up right at the hole. No, I just didn’t get that right at all. Again, normally I’d like to chip this, but put her on these greens is probably just the safest bet. It’s left to right. Oh god. Struggling. Are you in already, Davey? Yeah. I’d like to say for you can say whatever you want on camera now. So eagle there. Be nice to hold this. It’s tough line up. Oh, that was a nice port. Now, oh, it needs to come in. Do you think so? Yeah. Yeah. Right, lads. The good news is it was pin high. Uh but again, well left and we’re in a bit of rough. So it’s going to run off the back, isn’t it? Well, we’ll have a put at a par hopefully. Oh, I overread that break. Great P. Well done. Thank you. Worst swing of the day, but it might work out, which it will, right? 156 telegraph pole is the line. Come on. Give me a green. Give me a green. Thank you. Looks pretty straight. I thought I had that every chance. Yeah. What a port. Nice first pair of day. Let’s hope there’s a couple more. Yeah, it felt good. Yeah, let’s go. All right, lad. So, you want to be left here. Um, ground’s pretty tough, so just trying a little bump and run. Oh, that’s too far left, maybe. Okay, well, pin high, a little chip across, maybe. Right, lad’s literally pin high. So, if I could hit it straight, we’d be laughing. But, uh, the advice was to aim left. I just aimed a little too left. Come on, give me a chance. Thanks. I’ll just tap that in. Thank you. Yeah. Don’t go bunker. Don’t go bunker. Am I in it? Crown. For once, it’s good to be short. Spun far too quickly on that. Anyway, we got away with it. Right, lad. Ball is buried. Uh, so just trying to get it between those bumpers and back into the fairway. Couldn’t really see it in the in. Oh, look. I’m out. That’s all I care about. Okay, lads. A bit of work to do here cuz I think I only have one shot on this. So, needs to slow. Needs to slow. Might work out. Look, I’m on the green. Think this might just be a little left edge. T-shot. Oh, nice. Keep it ticking over. Few bad shots creeping in now. Oh well, [Music] the silence is definite. All right, lads. Let’s try and recover on a down slope. [Music] [Music] Oh, this is some way to mess up a golf hole. All right. Tank goes around here. [Music] No. Right, guys. Need an up and down to uh save myself from a scratch. [Music] left myself with a lot to do. Yeah. Like I’m not seeing that much break other than a downhill push, but you’ll know more, won’t you? It’s severe right to left. Severe right to left. Right to left. Yeah. See, this is tricky now. And you can’t see it, but like, you know, if I’m if I’m coming out playing, I’m thinking left to right. It’s not straight. Yeah. I was looking at You’re looking at around here about Yeah. Right. So about two foot right foot and a half. Right. Well, I need the hole. It’s so it’s so criminal. [Music] [Music] I think that’s annoying. Oh, what a shot. I promise you the next part three you won’t hit. kick to the left should around. As long as I’m not in that bunker. No, you’re going to I’m telling you, maybe that’s the play. Maybe I will hit driver on the next pair of tree. Just run it up like a putter. Take me par. That’s a good way to recover. You can’t ask for any more now. Thank you. Go your way. Global knowledge. Don’t anywhere but the bunker. Needed to hit the stick there. Right, lads. Um, obviously the bunker was just affecting me. I just had visions of going into that bunker. So, I overcooked the chip a little bit. Um, ground’s a little hard as well, so I’m struggling to kind of get under the ball as well. But look, we’ve got to put it apart. And as you know, I’ll take that all day long. Big left to right. One of my worst puts today, but see how we get on. All right, lads. Tricky put. It’s a left to right and it’s going to run. So, need to start it outside the left side. That’s a bad double. Perfect. Hello. A I might have a bad lie there. That just went straight into it. As long as I’m out. Right, guys. Few bunkers in the line, which I don’t really like. Go on. Get up there. Oh, don’t. Oh, I just hung on. All right, lads. I tell you here now. I would take a two put here for bogey. So, it’s going to be downhill. So, it’s going to be quick. Yeah. Right. All right. So, at this distance, you kind of just want to be going center the cup. Might even just be inside left. Nice bogey for two. Let’s go. Right. He’s the resident fox. Is he looking for food? Nice ball fly. It’s all right. Hopefully that gets a bit of run. Right, guys. That drive is about 220, which was one of the better ones. And hitting a five iron. I’m finding all the bunkers. No, that’s going to hold up. Lovely. It’s a little left, but you like that. Oh, lovely kick. Just roll off the back. Did it right lads? You advised that this green is going to be quick. Um, and right to left. Go on. Go on. Go on. Guys, tricky pull here. It’s a little right to left and be reasonably quick. Another par five. Yeah. Lovely. How cool is this one, lads? So, I don’t know if you can see it, but you can actually see the pullback chimneys down there on the right hand side. Pretty cool. [Music] Come on, get down. Oh, bad bounce. That’s all right. Out in the open. Yeah. Aiming for that left hand bunker. Yeah, that’s the line. Okay. And hit six iron. Exactly as you said as well, bouncing into the right. Oh, good call. Pinha. Yeah, great shot. Put it apart. And on the channel, we take them all day long. Davey, I didn’t care about him. I’m thinking about myself here. Right. Talk to me. What are you saying? I’m saying uh it’s definitely a right to left. It’s probably I’d probably be aiming a full cup as in like probably not that much. Not that much. No. So maybe half a cup right or even just right edge. Yeah, I definit Yeah. I think I have to start outside the hole a little bit. Half a cup like that. Okay. Yeah. Right lads. Half a cup. Right. I had the line. Just tell you what though, a bogey for three. beauty. Yeah, just perfect. Wouldn’t be high handicap stingers underneath that tree now would be perfect. I mean, I absolutely flushed that. That was me giving a bad line off the te might just do a little kind of bump and run almost. Happy with the line. Just writed a pen in the background. Yeah. Go on. Undercooked it slightly, but I mean I’m on the green. Put it apart. Yeah. Okay. I give myself a chance at bogey tree. Great put. Great stroke. Cheers. Tell you, we got a few up and down today, haven’t you? I think it’s some of the nicest feeling golf up and down. Yeah. Lovely. Five for three, lads. Oh, I didn’t catch it, but uh I know it’s just going to be very short, lads. So, just going to feed right to left. Is it Thank you. Lovely. I think that might be four pairs. Yeah. All right. I felt off on that one. All right, guys. Let’s just try and save this hole. I think I might have this branch in my back swing. Oh, no. It’s going to be a long hole. Oh, we’re on, are we? Yeah. That’s giving me a chance. Yeah, cuz to me this looks like, do you know, just pretty much. And this is the ones I find the hardest now is that when it’s almost like I’m not trusting the line cuz I can’t see it. You know, Earth is not going to change axis. Does that make sense? Once you got your break, you got to trust them. Yeah. Yeah. That’s what Bob Rella taught me. was on the line. I snuck it in. Tell you what, five for two there from your drive. And my second shot. Yeah, right shot or something. Yeah, lad. So, you just want to be out here left. It’s gone in right, but hopefully I have enough angle, but Ah, bounce killed me. But yeah, well, I won’t be going for the green anyway, so as long as I can kind of pop it down the fairway. You’ll be surprised. Yeah. So, a 180 flag. You’re playing 160. Playing 160. Okay. Not the worst place to be. No. Grand like I didn’t do anything you were telling me there. But right lad. It’s going to be a big right to left and it’s going to be quick. So, uh, just trying to get this inside two two putt territory. [Music] Tell you what, didn’t didn’t really move much now. Um, not as severe as it looks. Yeah. Good. Yeah, pace was good. Just didn’t have the line unfortunately. But look, Chance at another bogey tree. That’s another five for three. Ah, super. It’s going to be up the right hand side, but yeah, just run up there. I don’t even think I can reach that green, so maybe I’m just trying to aim it in between the two bunkers for a chip on. Yeah. Yeah. Let’s just put ourselves in position. Horrible strike, but yeah, not a great yardage. Um 55 yards to the middle. We just want to be right hand side of the pin really. Uh too much. All right. Okay, I give myself a put at a bogey. That looks reasonably straight, I think. Uphill. Uphill. Right. So, we need to give it a little bit. a little bit further than I would have liked. Okay. rim the cup. So overall, we shot a 94 for an incredible 42 points with a whopping 23 of those coming on the back nine. Well, they don’t call me the back nine bandit for nothing, lads. Literally, nobody calls me that. In terms of my handicap, that round actually goes down as a 93 due to a net double on the eight, which gives me a very tidy cut of 1.2 two strokes, meaning I’m now down to 22 and a2, meaning operation sub20 is now fully back on, people. Now, if you haven’t seen my previous videos and don’t want to know the score, look away now because in terms of the leaderboard, that puts Davey from Deer Park straight in at number one with an incredible 42 points and that’s going to take some beating. Look, Dave, thanks a million for the invite. Alan, Alan Staon, thanks a million for coming out. Um, I might just get you to stand beside so you can share the mic. Um, firstly, thanks a million for inviting me down, coming out with me. One of the most enjoyable rounds I’ve ever had playing golf, not just a subscriber series. So, I really mean that. I think that showed him how I scored as well. First and foremost, what did you think of the round? How do you think I played? How do you think you guys played? Any thoughts? Initially, you played fantastic for a course. You haven’t played many in many times on a perfect day. You could have got better than that. You played great. One or two wobbly shots, but sure everybody has them doing the golf. And you did it pretty well after you after you got over the Thanks for over the hump. Thanks very much. Yeah, cuz previously when I hit a bad shot, that could have been me gone for the round. So, I’m kind of glad at how well I rebounded. And again, I cut that down to just having nice company out on the court. So, you’re not I swear to God, I genuinely don’t. We had to weed up our game after seeing you on the front N. Yeah. Well, a lot of people now be abusing me online. Don’t worry about that. Saying I’m not a true handicap, but they haven’t seen the 115 I shot a score you about two weeks ago. But, we’ll keep that between us. H Davey, as you know now, uh that puts you in the lead with 41 points. Hey guys, just wanted to clarify the round was actually 42 points, not 41 as I’ve just mentioned there. Unfortunately, on the day when I was playing the round, I mistakenly thought I only had one stroke on the last hole. However, I actually had two strokes. So, that double bogey was actually worth two points. So, during this interview, whenever you hear 41 points, just remember it was actually 42 points. Prizes are around the K club. So, are you already thinking about that now or I I hope you play well and you you get caught. But if if if it’s beasts the winning score, happy days for me. I think 41 will be hard back now. Great score. That’s a great score. A tough day. Very bangsy golf course. Very bangsy golf course. How did you How did you find it? I absolutely loved it. This is my first time playing at Deer Park, but absolutely lovely golf course. You know, it’s scorable. H But the green’s real challenge. It’s, you know, firm fast. So, uh I definitely want to come back now that I know kind of how it’s acting to see if I can be 41. It’s a lot to ask now, but uh you got a savage score for never playing this course. That’s average. So, I mean, fair play to good. Yeah. Well, look guys, uh I hope you enjoyed it. Uh we’ve only a few left in the subscriber series challenge. I don’t know if we’ll get as good a day as this or, you know, nice views as this, but uh hope you enjoyed it and I’ll see you in the next one. Thanks, guys. Better company. Cheers. I doubt it. Well done. Thanks, Dave. Thanks a million.
This is the fourth episode in our subscriber series, where our resident high handicapper accepts an invitation from a subscriber to their home course, to see who can help him shoot the best score and lower his handicap the most.
This week, we have been invited by Davie, to the incredible Deer Park Golf Club, located in Howth, North County Dublin, Ireland.
It is our first time playing the course but sometimes ignorance is bliss. We were treated to an absolute scorcher of a day and Deer Park has some of the nicest views I’ve ever seen on a golf course, a great mix for a good round of golf.
This video features every shot of a beginner, high handicapper golf round, and features all of the trials and tribulations you would expect from High Handicap Golf. Can we put everything we’ve learned from our golf lessons, golf tips, online golf videos Ann golf swing tips together and finally shoot a good stable ford score?
We have also announced the prize for the competition, which is a free round of golf, with me, at the incredible K Club, Palmer North golf course, currently ranked as the 16th best course in all of Ireland.

Keep them coming
Nice round sir. Love your journey. My journey has taken a bit of a turn. Looking for a new hitting coach.
"No idea" on 8. 🤣 I'm familiar with those Jamie! My friend tells me I need to start a channel called "Tuple Golf" because my abilities mean that I know those names: Quintuple, Sextuple, Septuple, Octuple, Nontuple… you were only scratching the surface of the tuple possibilities! 😉
I'm only halfway through the video, and loving it! You're playing great Jamie and I love these incredible courses you play in Ireland! I need to visit Ireland someday…and bring the clubs of course!
"No idea" 😅 Been there
Great round there Jamie. Few holes could have gone better for some obscene bandit scoring!
Enjoyed that mate, what a beautiful course. A few disasters but your course management and ball striking is definitely on the up ☝️ and putting was 🔥 👍
The shot tracer makes a massive difference! Solid video! Cracking weather for it too!
I notice you never seem to hit a fairway wood, I find them easier to hit than a long iron.
Scored great on a tough course! 👏
Hey..for those chips around the green you need to use a higher lofted club to have a chance for the ball to stop sooner. 52 or a 56 wedge
Great video! Really enjoyed that!!
Have a look at Macreddin Golf Club located near Aughrim in Wicklow, there's some crackin holesto play on google maps. Have a look sure
Really must get you down to Headfort for 18 Jamie..
Your some bandit of 27! A lofted wedge would make that scorecard hitting towards 50😮 loving the content 🙌
You should come play Waterford Golf Club!
Still at it jaimee..good man!
Unreal day for the round Jamie. I can attest to the 42. That was my fault😮. Can’t wait to see you get into the teens with your handicap. Keep up the great content💪🏻
Great scoring fella you played well – your putting was very solid indeed! Lovely looking course that – and nice and open, it would suit me well I think..
Solid enough round there. Not too many mistakes off the tee and the chipping and putting is getting better. Great video.
Very enjoyable video. The best I have seen you play. Well done!
You have a mean 6 iron shot
Well played Jamie, serious score that 👍
I hate the greens in deerpark
That course is stunning
Ye beauty ye
That is an unreal score for that course, people don't realise in deer park if you slice or hook on many of the holes that's the ball gone, fair play. I'm a member there off 18.5 and haven't shot below 92 so well done
Another great video mate 👍🏻😊
Well played. Keep going😀👍
Two uploads in short order, love it. The static camera with nice clarity gives me WGT Golf vibes. Best solo youtube golf channel . Minus a couple bad swings, that round could have easily been kissing the 80s. Cheers mate 🍻
9th hole tee shot with the driver worked a treat, pin high and close
Thanks subscribers for getting him out and about
Well done. Looks like the speed of the greens and your short game got you.
From the States: I enjoy watching your videos! Congrats on a solid round!!
Mark
No way you are a 27. My guess is 18 – 20. Well done
thank you for sucking at golf. Makes me feel better.
Nice looking open course and great weather just an suggestion use more loft around the greens an keep ball in play can definately break 90 soon
You are getting there man! Compared to the first videos you´ve really improved. Really enjoy your videos and the subtle humor. And by the way…what a course! That looks awesome!
You are a burglar. 27 my arse
Good round, without that blowup on the 8th ⛳️ you might have reached 20 – next time 👍🏻
