Harris English speaks to the media following his last round at The Open Championship

Hello. Hello sir. Hola. So, so there was no I mean no accident here this week. I mean there was a few elements. The course fitted you well. I mean there was a plan this week. No. Can you talk a little bit about the plan, the strategy and everything? How it worked out. No. So yeah. Yeah. Um Ramon and I did a great job of of coming up with the strategy. Um he kind of knows how I operate and we we had a good good plan with the win. I mean, the the first couple days of the practice round was the win. We kind of played today and the first couple days of the tournament was a different win. And that’s what happens out here. And you got to have a good plan for all different scenarios of wind and what clubs you’re going to hit off a tee, what lines you’re going to pick. And I feel like we did a really good job of um staying focused on those lines and and he he did a good job of keeping me zoned in and locked in on those targets. The the back nine know the last nine holes. Yeah. I mean, things get emotional in a way. How do you control all that? You get into 18, all the people, the crowds. I mean, yeah. What do you do? Um, you semi just learn how to block it out as much as you can and focus on seeing your shot and and hitting your shot. And I feel like I did a really good job of locking in and and zoning in. And um even though winning today was probably not attainable unless I shot nine under. Um I feel like I needed a really good round and wanted to play well in the open championship and give myself a run. Um I think my best finish was 14th in this tournament coming into this year. So I I knew I could play better than that and and wanted wanted to play better than that. So it was it was uh awesome to finish like that. Two majors runner up this year. I mean, and your position for the RER Cup is not bad at all. No, no. What is your expectations? Yeah. Um, I mean, losing to Scotty twice in and two majors was the only guy to beat me at the PGA and and this week, um, playing some good golf. Just just need to clean it up a little bit. But, um, one of my some of my two goals this year were make it the Tour Championship and make that RDER Cup team. And, and hopefully I’ve moved myself a little closer to that. and hopefully I get in that top six to um lock up a spot. And the last thing is you talked a little bit about it yesterday is your thoughts on Scotty and the way he’s playing and and yeah, it’s incredible. Um I wasn’t playing professional golf when Tiger would was at his peak um early 2000s, mid 2000s, but it’s pretty incredible. Um just how good of a front runner he is. I mean, he’s improved his putting. I mean, there there’s no stat that he’s bad in. I mean, it’s like, how do you beat this guy? Um, but it’s he he works so hard and see him in the gym all the time, see him practicing, I mean, he’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever seen. And to have number one in the world working that hard just makes it that much harder to catch him. Um, so what he’s doing right now is incredible. I don’t know how much you knew about know about Chris Prior, if you played with him before, but I’m just kind of curious what you make of playing with him, what you seen of his game, obviously what he’s done the last two weeks. Yeah, he he was awesome. Obviously, what he did last week was was awesome to see um going toe-to-toe with Rory at the Scottish Open and I think this is his first time playing Wingskov. His first open championship. Obviously, his his ball flight suits this place. He can flight it, he can smash it. Um, sorry I’m talking about you here. Yeah, ask a question about you. Um, so it’s awesome and I mean I’ve played in I don’t know nine or 10 of these and finished 14th and for him to first one finish third is is pretty incredible. Um, got a heck of a game and I know the best is in front of him. I mean I don’t know why it took him so long to play well out here. What’s it like playing in a tournament like that where Scotty is so far ahead for so long? Yeah, I mean it happened at the PGA as well. Um, is it is it weird or difficult for the rest of you? What do you do? You just try to stay with your stay in your own game, stay with your strategy and do the best you can do and hope he falters and comes back to the field. Um, it’s not like I’m going to go out there and hit driver every single hole and go at every pin and and try to shoot 10 under. Um, I got to pick my spots to be aggressive and then just play my own game because there’s a lot of world ranking points. There’s a lot of effects cut points. um to play for and I’m just trying to do the best I can with the with the strategy at hand and what I’m faced with on that pole. But because it’s him, is there is there a big part of you say is that I can’t win this? Yeah, I mean I you can’t say not saying I can’t win. It’s like I got to go shoot eight or nine under today and and play probably the best round of my life to be able to catch him. And it’s just amazing to see. I mean, the show he’s putting on, the consistency h he has is is unbelievable. Go play. Thank you.

  1. Harris, Gotterup and Griffin all need to be on the team. I’d also like to see Novak and Harmon on the team.

  2. Harris did a great job as did Gotterup, Li and Fitzgerald. The problem is you have to shoot 4 under on each of the 4 rounds to have a chance to catch Scottie which is almost impossible.
