The world number one proved his worth once again over the weekend by claiming his third major with victory at The Open Championship, yet his peers believe there’s still one thing missing from his gameScottie Scheffler has drawn comparisons to Tiger Woods following his victory at The Open Championship
Shane Lowry and Jordan Spieth believe Scottie Scheffler’s swing is the only thing stopping him from being mentioned in the same breath as Tiger Woods despite moving one win away from achieving a career Grand Slam on Sunday.
The American secured the fourth major win of his career with an impressive four-shot victory at The Open Championship, leaving him needing just the U.S. Open to complete the set after following up his two Masters successes in 2022 and 2024 with the PGA Championship back in May.
Following his latest success at Royal Portrush, Scheffler naturally received comparisons to Woods, yet the world’s top-ranked golfer humbly dismissed such talk, instead opting to cite the 15-time major winner as his childhood hero.

Fellow PGA Tour stars Shane Lowry and Jordan Spieth, however, believe the 29-year-old is within touching distance of golf’s legendary figure.
In their post-round press conferences, both lauded Scheffler for his latest achievement, although Lowry made it clear that there’s just one thing holding him back from being talked about in the same sentence as Woods – his swing.
“I think […] if Scottie’s feet stayed stable and his swing looked like Adam Scott’s, we’d be talking about him in the same words as Tiger Woods,” Lowry told reporters on Sunday.
Scheffler claimed the third major trophy of his career with Sunday’s success at Royal Portrush
“I just think because it doesn’t look so perfect, we don’t talk about him like that. I think he’s just incredible to watch, and his bad shots are really good. That’s when you know he’s really good.”
Spieth was then quizzed for his thoughts on Lowry’s comments, and while the former world number one found it hard to disagree with the Irishman, he also believes that Scheffler’s personality is something else that sets him apart from Woods, too.
“Yeah, I think it’s also — I think it’s less the golf swing and maybe more of his personality,” Spieth said. “He doesn’t care to be a superstar.
“He’s not transcending the game like Tiger did. He’s not bringing it to a non-golf audience necessarily. He doesn’t want to go do the stuff that a lot of us go do, corporately, anything like that.
Jordan Spieth says Scheffler’s personality is another factor that separates him from Woods
“He just wants to get away from the game and separate the two because I know that he — at one time, he felt it was too much, that he was taking it with him, and whenever he made that switch, I don’t know what it was, but he has hobbies.
“He’s always with his family. They’re always doing stuff. I think it’s more so the difference in personality from any other superstar that you’ve seen in the modern era and maybe in any sport. I don’t think anybody is like him.”
As a result of his T7 finish at this year’s U.S. Open, Scheffler will have to wait until next summer to attempt to secure the career Grand Slam, where a win would see him follow in the footsteps of Woods by winning all four majors in just four years.
