Hey guys, Mr. Shore hitter here. You don’t look like a short hitter to me. So guys, I want to make another video here on how to avoid a blowup hole. I’m going to take this hole on. It’s a 390 yard par4. There’s a creek down there and there’s kind of a a mound that is really steep and if you hit your ball in that, you don’t carry it, it would be an almost impossible shot to hit to the green. So, the first thing to do to avoid a blowup hole is going to be to have a good understanding and be realistic on your capabilities. So, this hole for the flag, I’ve got 374 pins in the front. To carry the creek, we’ve got about 180. So, you have to be really realistic. You want to hit a club that you know you’re going to be able to carry that creek at least nine out of 10 times. If you can’t carry the creek, then you’re going to need to lay up. I see so many players that’ll try to carry a creek that they can only carry four out of 10 times and then wonder why they’re having blowup holes. So, if we go well to the right, there’s a pond over there, but that’s 50 yards to the right. So, if you can get the ball in an area that’s 60 yards wide and you could carry it at least 180 nine out of 10 times, this is a hole that you’re going to want to hit driver on and give yourself a chance to get to this green. Now, that was not a very good drive, but I knew I could carry it at least at 180. So, let’s go down there and see what we got. You know, you just have to remember that there’s nothing wrong with laying up. To hit it here, we don’t want to hit it too close. If we happen to lay up, we’re going to want to lay it back because it rolls downhill. So, some of the things that you need to keep in mind are that is it firm out? Is it downhill? So, this is about 165 to this creek, but if I was going to lay up, I would probably hit a shot about 145. Leave it a little bit on the top of that hill back there and just play it as a three shot hole. Don’t let your ego get involved because your ego is going to lead to some blowup holes. This is the mound I was talking about on the left. Now, let’s say we did hit this ball left and we had this shot. Well, first we’d have to climb up the hill 170. So about 176 from here. This is a pretty steep heel. And I’ve seen players try to hit a five iron or sixiron and end up hitting it right into the face of this heel. I would probably just take a nine iron. Now I’m taking all of this out of play and I’m going to take a little compact swing. just chop it up the fairway. Just does not make sense to take on the risk of hitting this right into the mound and who knows where it might go. So now we’re down the fairway and we’re going to have a little wedge in our hands. 65 yards. Could hit a kind of a fuller shot with a 58. I like to take a 54 and take a little easier swing at it. Little short there. Not a very good wedge there, but so you can see it’s still not a blowup hole, guys. This looked like the pin was a little further back. Isn’t a bad shot at all. Little left to right up the hill. Wet greens. will give it a little bit extra, but I’m not one that likes to really ram putts. So guys, a hole like this could kind of lull you to sleep because you think there’s really no trouble around the green, but you can leave yourself in some pretty awkward spots if you’re not careful. Now, this is a front pin, so we don’t have to worry about the spot I’m about to show you, but if the pen was in the back, it’d be something we had to think about. So, here’s something that you probably wouldn’t think about if you were playing this hole. Long left. You see these two trees back here? Well, the number of times that I’ve seen someone in one of these or between them or behind them, it’s kind of amazing. So, when it gets firm out, if you’re shooting at a back pin, you have to be really careful because when you go left, you shut the face down. A lot of times it’ll fly longer and that would definitely be in play if you try to shoot at a back pin, especially a back left pin. Now, there are also some trees on this side right of the green, but generally when you hit a ball and you miss it right, the ball normally doesn’t fly further. So, long right is normally not a big deal. But if the pins back, you go over this green, you’re going to have a delicate shot. And a lot of times blowup holes are caused by trying to get cute with a little flop shot and end up leaving it short and now you chip it on and you two putt or three putt and now you made a triple. So with all that being said, this pin is front left. So front left, we’re going to not want to miss it left to the green because that’ll leave us very little green to work with. If we do somehow miss it left to the green, then we just have to take our medicine, pitch it on, and two putt. We don’t want to try to get queued if we miss it left. If we miss it right, we have a lot more room to deal with. And if we miss it short, we have an easy little pitch putt. We have plenty of green to work with. So, our miss is in this area. So, guys, let’s remember I hit a high spinny right drive there. For many of you, you would try to hit this drive over this creek, even if that high spinny drive would leave you in the creek. When you’re trying to carry that creek, you need to make sure that even a mishit like this one would carry the creek without a problem. I’ve got 168. Now, remember, we’re looking at this corner. If we’re short, we’re okay. We just want to keep it right of that red flag. I’ll hit a five hybrid. I know that won’t go long and I know it won’t go long left. So I see kind of a big tree up there, kind of a bushy tree on the right, which is about the middle of the green. So I’ll aim at that and that’s about 30 ft right of the flag. Okay, I think I pushed it a little further right. We still have a shot. One thing I repeat all the time and you’ve seen on this channel is I always say chip with the least loft you can. In this scenario, I’m going to chip with the five hybrid pretty close to wanting to putt this. But either way, just off the green off the collar here, unless I have a really bad lie, I’m always going to chip with something like a five hybrid or a putter or maybe a seven iron. But this time, we’ll hit a five hybrid. And one thing that this guarantees me at least is that I’m not going to have a blowup hole. If I hit this bad, I may leave myself a 10-ft puck, but I’m not going to hit some kind of chip and skull it or blade it or hit it fat. It’s going to be real easy for me to get the club on the ball here. Still not a blowup pole. I did a poll recently to where I asked, “What do you consider a blow-up pole?” And so many people said, “A double bogey.” You have to be a heck of a golfer for a double bogey to be a blowup hole. I do not consider a double bogey a blow-up hole. I just consider it a bad hole. All right, there guys. I hope you enjoyed the video. I hope something in this video helps you avoid blowup holes. No matter how difficult the hole is, if you use bad strategy, you can find a way to blow up. So, I hope you enjoyed the video and if you did enjoy the video, like, comment, subscribe. Until next time, Mr. Shore hitter out. Just play 13.

  1. What suggestions do you have to avoid blowup holes when you are unfamiliar with the course and hidden obstacles it presents?

  2. Played yesterday (Wednesday) after the rain and made a 9 on a Par 5. Leaked a drive right into the rough and from there that's when the train went off the tracks. Seems like the rain just made this rough so much harder to get out of or control the aim on the shot. Topped it off with a 3-putt, the pin was in the back and my ball was in the front. I felt like I made good, controlled swings with high-lofted clubs to escape. Fought this hole from tee to green; goofy thing was I was +1 from the first four holes of the back nine. C'est la vie!

  3. Avoiding blowup holes is difficult even when you’re doing well to manage the course. My biggest current challenge is alignment & swing consistency, it’s getting better! Thanks for the videos MSH!

  4. RE that last part, on what is a blow up hole. Depends what your playing level is. If you are shooting above 85 on average, you are playing good bogey golf, so that's your model. Bogeys are your par, pars your birdie, doubles your bogeys. Triples and up? Those are your blowups. Just like MSH says, double is just a bad hole. Heck, if you average up over 100, you can shoot almost as many doubles as bogeys, and still get a better than average score.

If you are shooting 75 or less, you are trying to play par golf. So double is kind of a blowup. It's a loss of 2 strokes, and that's hard to get back. Triples are worse, of course, but one hopes they are rare if you shoot 75. Probably those 2 doubles a round are the reason you aren't shooting 71-72.

In between? Around 80? Doubles are not good. That's like losing a stroke and a half. Gotta work to get that back. So they are kind of minor blowups. But true card wreckers? Major disasters? Maybe not quite. But yeah, at that point, it's kind of debatable. That's my take.

  5. Some of the best content on YouTube. Still amazed as a subscriber for quite some time there are not more subscribers. People really missing out

  6. Double bogey = blow up hole? Are they crazy. That is never ever a blow up hole, a bad hole, but definitely not a blow up hole.. This proves that amateur golfers have unrealistic expectations. Guys, temper your expectations, you’ll play better and have more fun. Cheers.

  7. One thing I don't see is amatuers using the full width of the tee box to create angles. All slicers and faders should be over on the right aiming down into the left rough by the 150 yard markers (if the course has them). Or on par 3's using the tee box to create an angle to a flag or to avoid a bunker. Most just stick the tee in right in the middle of the box. There is a video for you. Simon

  8. I think a triple bogey or worse is a blowup hole. Even for us amateurs, a double bogey is not a blowup hole. A par after a double bogey puts you back to bogey golf. Absolutely love using my hybrid from the fringe. It has been a game changer. My friends enjoy watching me shorten the green with it. Cheers!

  9. A blow up hole for me is when I look back and can tell that my mood turned really negative after hitting a bad shot, or two in a row, and then making the hole worse for myself than it should have been from that point on. Once a shot is done we can't change it. Letting the bad shot mentally cause more bad shots or tricking us into taking hero shots to try and make up for what is already done and gone does not help at all.
