In todays video I try to make golf a little bit easier, many golfers throw away shots on the golf course! It is hard enough and we must learn to make the best scores we can but it isn’t that easy. I have 5 simple solutions that will help you lower your handicap and break 90 on a regular basis. This is a simple way to become a better golfer and shoot lower scores without any swing changes.

so how often do you play some great golf hit some great shots and then sign for a scorecard that is very much not a reflection of your performance you’re tired of throwing away good rounds of golf ruining your scorecard with the odd bad hole so if this sounds familiar and you’re looking to consistently break 90 lower your golf scores then today’s video is definitely for you so I’ve played with plenty of golfers over the years who well they hit the ball fantastically well hit it for miles in fact but then they don’t score particularly well at the end of the round and for me there are five reasons why that happens and what I’m going to show you in today’s video is five simple solutions to those problems which will make a massive impact on your scoring without you having to change any element of your actual golf swing right let’s kick things off with problem number one from what is the fifth hole i’m middle of the fairway on a par4 and I’ve just got 150 yards into the green we’ve got a little bit of an issue that I want to discuss and where you’ve got a major problem in breaking 90 and that’s our inability to assess or evaluate risk versus reward now as you can see from this bit of drone footage from where I’m situated the green is on a very much severe dog leg from left to right and if I want to hit the green from 150 yards out it means I’ve got to go directly over this tree line there’s a couple of issues there of potential risks one that I hit the trees because I don’t get the ball quite how I wanted to don’t get it up in the air and as you can see there’s some out of bounds sticks i’m out of bounds other option is I get it up in the air but I don’t quite carry the right distance maybe I fade it as well and once again I’m out of bounds so it’s a high-risisk shot with a penalty attached do I want to take that if I’m trying to break 90 well I would suggest no you don’t want to waste a good drive like this from the middle of the fairway so what I’m going to suggest we look at doing is evaluate it a little bit differently and if I play something like an eight iron nine iron straight down in front of me where I’m looking now you’ll see we avoid any chance of going out of bounds we avoid a pond that is situated on the corner of this dog leg as well and it should leave me just a 50 or 60 yard chip into the hole and I’ve eliminated all the risk so evaluate the situation and make sure you understand the risk versus the reward and once you start making those decisions uh a little bit more towards the kind of uh eliminating risk I’m pretty sure you’ll start to drop your scores and consistently start breaking 90 problem number two and a massive issue in a number of different ways for any golfer and that’s ego but ego really plays a part in what I’m about to tell you now because you’re not prepared to do what it actually takes to break 90 on a regular occurrence because 18 over par is effectively one over par for every hole on the golf course this par three we’re about to play now is I’m going to play as a par four and I’m going to tell you why because it’s extremely dangerous and it’s a card wrecker but for most of us and when I first started playing golf 35 years ago when I come to this hole I’d pick out the club from the bag that gets me 180 yards with my Sunday best the problem was I’d slice it out to the right and have to play three off the tea i’d pull it left and go into the pond and every now and again yes I might hit the green but it’s that percentage chance of doing so which is a real issue so today I’m going to play it as a par4 and let’s see if we can make this a whole lot simpler so the first thing for me to do is evaluate where my sort of safe zone is and that is 30 40 yards short of the green is the widest part of the fairway it means we don’t bring the pond into play and I’m going to stare to the left hand side of what is the fairway even though I’m playing a par three so that’s my safe landing space so what I’m going to try and do is I’m going to play a four hybrid down towards the pond knowing full well that I can’t reach it with what is going to be a three quarter swing let’s see if we can do that first of all right that’s pretty much perfect so I’ve got myself in the middle of the fairway we’re in a safe zone and what it should leave me now is a nice very straightforward chip into the green and I’ve took all the risk out of the equation by playing that first shot dropping my ego and not trying to get this ball on the green and potentially wreck my card give me a chance in some way well that was probably a bit better than expected and we’ve got what might be 8 10 foot for a potential par but don’t forget we’re playing this as a four so in my eyes I’m putting for a birdie right now i actually chose to play an eight iron and I’ll explain in another problem later on in this video about how that club selection also plays a major part in you reducing your score so now like I said we’ve got to put for a three and if we’re still then we walk off with that four and we’re still going to break 90 joe the irony is I bogey that hole virtually every week and I’ve just pred it using my own methods why don’t I listen to my own methodology problem number three is very simple and straightforward to eradicate from your game and it’s the choice of shot type that you elect to play now it’s really important because you get this bit wrong again it can be hugely costly this position I’m in here now is uh well we’ve probably got about 30 yards to the flag i’ve got nothing in front of me and there are a few options to play the wrong option is the one that you’ll see me play last and that is a wedge with some loft and throw it up in the air he did okay i executed the shot okay and as you can see bit of a cheaty you can see it’s the furthest from the flag and that’s because the other two options were far safer the first one being was the putter yes often it’s joked and frowned upon the Texas wedge and for some reason people are embarrassed to play it from this kind of situation but it is the club with the highest percentage of success from this position and when I say success is the highest percentage of club that can’t have failure in my opinion let’s rephrase it because with the putter I’m not going to mess the shot up i’m not going to blade it i’m not going to thin it and I am going to get it somewhere down there near the target this did really well but if it goes a little bit further a little bit shorter I’m still safe and I’m still in a scoring zone and a possibility to make that par the last club I played was in fact an eight iron it was a little chip and run shot and it was exactly the same concept get the ball on the ground and get it moving that first choice of shot and so many will come to here they’re 30 yards away and they’re playing a lofted wedge it’s incredibly difficult to execute it’s got a huge percentage uh room for error and a lot can go wrong so choose the club and the shot type that you’re trying to play wisely and it will massively impact your scores and as Lewis Johnson once said to me you don’t chip over nothing so literally get it on the ground get it running towards the hole as soon as you can and in this instance don’t be afraid of using that putter that’s the right club it’s not far away oh my god so we are back where it all started and would you believe that was nearly a hole in one on camera that would have been nice but it’s the club choice that I’m really interested in and why this reason number four that you’re having problems to break 90 is because of the wrong choice based on optimum performance now what I mean by that is this i’ve got 135 to that flag and if I look at my yardage then ordinarily that’s a 9 iron i can pretty much say if I strike my nine iron between 90 and 100% of my performance I will hit it about 135 but there’s a big issue with this hole and that is if I hit anything short then effectively my ball is buried in a quarry and I’ve got a real problem in making anywhere near a par so I chose an eight iron and what that eight iron does it provides me with what I call a little bit of wiggle room so if I don’t quite get this right the likelihood is I’ll still make the front of the green if I nail it then yes I might go a little bit long but long is safe and if as I did with this one in particular I get it somewhere in between all those I nearly hold it but the idea is is to evaluate the situation that you’re looking at once again and choose a club that is not based on optimum performance but based on something within an average that gives you a little bit of room to make an error not quite get it out of the center of the club face but not have a major impact on your performance and ultimately your score in a negative way so choose your club not based on optimum but based on average performance right if I can interrupt just for two seconds and make a couple of appeals one is that you consider signing up for our newsletter which can be found on the website it’s the averagegolfer.co.uk keep very much up to date with all things averagegolfer all things golf and uh yeah that would be very much appreciated second thing is I don’t normally mention this but Instagram we’re trying to grow our following on Instagram and that is average golfer 99 but also trying to give Hwell a bit more exposure as well so if you can go and follow Holly Golf Club as well at the same time i know I’m getting greedy a lot of requests but both me and the golf club would be hugely appreciative so it’s a bit of a worker but there’s a reason why that shot was never going to let me down and that’s because I’ve got every confidence in the club that I’ve chose to play off this tea and that’s problem number five that you need to resolve so choose a club that you have the most confidence in the results that you’re going to achieve so what I mean by that is on this hole ideally it needs driver i’ve played a mini driver because it’s a lot more confidence inspiring for me personally but you might choose to play a hybrid you might choose to play a lofted fairway wood but wherever you are in whatever predicament you’ve got from the tea make sure you’re choosing something that you’ve got the utmost confidence in and has got the most percentage of success because all I ever see is people going to a par four par five the minute it gets over 300 yards and all we’ll do is automatically reach for the driver and the problem is not everybody has got ultimate confidence in their driver performance and it’s the club attached with the most risk so if you really want to seriously break 90 consistently then make sure you choose a club that has got the greatest percentage in terms of success and all of a sudden you’ll start to see your scores start to tumble sermon is over and I hope you take notice of those five reasons why you can’t break 90 and to be honest with you it’s uh a lesson that I need to practice what I preach certainly because it all worked out pretty good course management is uh club selection all those kind of things hugely important forget your swing you’ve got to get all those things right as well to make sure you give yourself the best chance of lowering your score breaking 90 and then moving on to the next step right thanks for watching as ever give me your feedback let me know what you thought put it into practice and I’ll see you all

Great advice!
Do you still carry the chipper?
My last round was 114. I'm going back for revenge with this plan in mind!
Hi Andy I signed up to the news letter around a month ago but have never received anything
Back in the day we were asked if we would play a round with a gentleman who was in his late 70's and was starting to have Dementia Issues. We said sure. This man hit it right down the middle about 165 yards every shot. The ball traveled about 20 feet off the ground until he got close to the green. He ended up shooting an 88 and we all had a great time.
Shot 90 yesterday in the medal on a very windy links and was quite happy , quite a few low single figure boys shot more than me.
My top tip learn how far each clubb goes !! Guarantee you dont hit it as far as you think !!!!!! Get a proper gap test
Such good advice. When I was out on the course on Friday, it was the occasional choice of the "hero" shot which hurt me. I managed to get under 90 but had to give myself a proper talking to on hole 4 😂
Good advice Andy. I'll definitely try to think about those things when I'm out on the course tomorrow. 👍
Hmmm has The Average Golfer been watching The Golf Sidekick? 🤔
Apply your handicap. I'm a 10.4 handicap
Good stuff Andy. I have made the decision this year to give up on competitive play, and just get out for fun with friends. I've cut my bag down to 7 clubs and am going to move up a set of tees. Hopefully only a couple more weeks before my course opens. Cheers from Canada.
Twenty five or so years ago I played at private members club, I'm not rich so the investment in money made me invest plenty of time playing to get the most value from it. It worked, I was younger, fitter and slimmer and made it to 12.2 handicap in pretty short order. Cue "life" divorce, redundancy and a motorbike racing crash that wrecked my hip, back and placed steel plates in my shoulder and my golf was done for about 20 years, other than a very very occasional hack around that left me crippled for a week or so. Then a couple of years ago my brother visited me from Spain and convinced me to play a full round with a buggy, I was hooked all over again. I started buying and selling clubs to fund my "new" hobby with inspiration curtesy of "Stacked golf" on YouTube. I used those clubs to shoot between 95-100 using some of the tips your highlighting here. Using ego and my woods I'm a 100 player. Course management, risk assessment and the right club selection "irons only 6-PW+wedges" shot me an 85 best last year and already an 84 this year albeit on a shortened course with prefered lies. I still have a good round in me but it irks me I can't consistently hit good driver or woods anymore. As soon as they come out I'm that 100 shot player again. My goals for this year are to reach 18 handicap and take a few lessons with driver and woods to hit straight again despite some loss of mobility.
Then on to winning some Majors lol
Good vid!
5 wood. 🍀
Brilliant video. Thank you. Just after I started to play golf 40 years ago. I borrowed a video from the library called ' How to break 90 in 30 days'. One of the tips was 'With a 7 iron (140 yds) a pitching wedge and a putter you can be on almost any green in the world putting for par.
Now this was in the day when par 4's were 335 yds an par 3's were 135yds. But the principles are the same today.
At the time these principles were a game changer and now at 73yrs old, WHS 17 the principles still work, 'IF' I discipline myself to play to them, which your lesson today was a reminder. 👍🏻
Ego or common sense.
After getting a Garmin for Xmas I’ve really noticed that a lot of my shots are chip, fluffed chip and then 2+ putts. Do the hard bit getting close to the green I 2 but then end up with a 6 ! Short game up and down really needs practice. I’m even considering one of those larger sole wedges from Cleveland to help the short game.
Wise words! Great advice, Andy
Much appreciated!
Brilliant and great advice here mate
Scary the amount of times I play with higher handicaps who think they hit it a lot further than they do and also try and play flop shots from 30 yards with nothing in the way. As I keep telling them a wise old man said to me once “only a fool chips over nothing”
Brilliant advice and strangely I did exactly this Sunday just gone and got my best score I've had at this particular course. Driver never even came out of the bag and the longest club I used was a 5 iron. I even beat my playing partners by 11 points overall. Definitely the way I'll be playing this year.
One of your best, Andy. Well done. My head was nodding at all 5 mistakes.
Andy, your style of play is very much like OMP. Very smart and is still a enjoyable way to play. 👍⛳️
All points makes sense apart from #3 – when you look at the shot scope data on what handicap levels can't hit greens from 150 down. As the handicap goes up, the miss range really widens up dramatically.
Good video. I personally find a 4 hybrid an excellent club for chipping. You may not always get it stone dead but it will always get you somewhere near the pin.
You said a key phrase “why don’t I listen to my own methodology” 🤣 99% of the time we are gonna go for that money shot lol
Then we still all 3 putt 😂
Thanks Andy good thoughts
Not hitting as far as I used to, and not getting out on the course as often either I really have been trying to do some of these pointers. Going to take a couple with me from this video too. Hard to convince myself, but getting there…
Thanks, this is brilliant.. You got all my issues. Stuck at Handicap 20.
Great video, hope I can apply it to my game
On another channel, I saw the advice that most handicap golfers would be better off hitting their club to the back of the gree distance! The reason being that most of us overestimate how far we can hit it & only hit the ball on average with 80-90% efficiency, not 100%!
This is really helpful. I like this kind of specifics and hearing the decision making process.
It's interesting to hear these tips. I put my driver away because my 3 wood is twice as consistent. I went to a 7 wood because it is easier to get in the air. My wife has no ego when she plays and she always chips with an 8 iron which led me to take my 2 most lofted wedges out of the bag.
For me, less clubs to clutter thoughts, using clubs that make shots easier, and controlling shots by keeping them closer to the ground have made the game far more enjoyable and much easier to score.
When at chipping or pitching distance, at what level of incline would you choose to use a higher lofted club instead of putter or bump and run?
This is good stuff for sure..however…to play like this, one better be very good with their wedge shots! It is safe to leave shots short of the green, even on Par 3's, however if you cannot chip, lob, hit half shots, etc.. you are still risking high scores on each hole. So my point is to develop a solid short game with confidence in your wedges which, in fact, should be every golfer's goal anyway. Thanks!
I relate to pretty much all these tips. Great video
as a senior hitting driver appox. 180 …my high scores mainly come from too many " wasted " fairly easy shots….I sometimes chunk or blade it from the fairway or from around the green and I 3 putt a lot…..besides more practice, I am going to try using only the clubs I am very comfortable with and play a shorter yardage ( 5500 yards max ) …..thoughts, thanks…..
Why don’t I listen to my own methodology? Best quote of the video. Your content is fantastic.
If you quit after 10 holes…you'll usually break 90!
Totally agree. I watched this after playing but I did actually concentrate on course management. I scored 99 last week. 88 yesterday which was the best I’ve scored in years. Great tips.
Appreciate the theory but if your not confident in a shot from 150 or 180 yards, you should be on the driving range.
simple and effective tips! I followed each tip on my last round, didn't used my driver sparingly-lack of confidence- instead used my 3w, Fw and/or Hy off tee deck, hit 12 of 18 fairways @ 150-200yd drives only, clubbed up and swung easier on approach shots, and putted just off the greens. Although i shot a 93, – i had two bad swings that resulted in penalties, but was well on my way to breaking 90!! Just need more lessons and confidence with the driver. Thanks for the tips
Yesterday I switched from my very expensive sand wedge to my very cheap sand wedge and shot better because the cheaper wedge has a large bounce. If I can save just 10 shots a round I would be at 90. How many of us hit from rough to rough.
what course is this?
Great video, it helps me a lot, keep it coming. Joined your club. Thanks
On the chip, putt thing off the green I like the 5wd putt… goes over initial crap but rolls really nicely… just aim 3rd to half the distance you want to go, goes much further than you think but very very safe and sometimes brilliant.
