Ping just released a club here in 2025 that I think is one of the most versatile clubs I’ve ever seen. What I mean by that is I think this is a club that can serve a wide range of handicaps. If you’re a 20, I think you could play this club. If you’re a five handicap, I think you could play this club. It is really, really an interesting one. We’re going to explore it today here on Let’s Play Through. First, let’s take a closer look. So, Ping calls this a players distance iron, but again, for me, it’s got some characteristics I think really fall in the game improvement category. Either way, I think it’s a really appealing package. So, when I first saw these clubs, looking at the aesthetics, I thought this is a really interesting design. I don’t think I really loved it at first, looking at this carbon fiber. But then I read something super interesting on the website that this badging is lightweight. Then it made sense. Okay, that’s why they used carbon fiber. And that is actually technology ping built into this club in order to shift mass even further down towards the sole of this club. We see that with so many modern clubs because they’re looking to increase lift. They’re looking to increase forgiveness. Ping was the first brand that ever created the perimeter waiting system. There’s so much mass here towards the toe and down here that it should forgive shots as good as anything out there. Now, Ping is all about customization. You can see they’ve always got this little cutout here so you can easily bend clubs. And they’ve got their colorcoded system where you can request clubs either upright or flat. I’ve got the standard black dot here, but there are a number of options from Ping. Now, this port here towards the toe also helps signify that this is a multimaterial construction. They’ve actually got a polymer layer here sitting behind the face, which is again going to provide forgiveness MOI. So, this promises to be a very forgiving iron, but again, they really stress that this is aimed all the way down to a better player. Now, in terms of a top line, a little thicker, I’d say, than most players irons, but they have done a decent job here of trying to taper it down a little bit. But, it’s going to be thicker. It’s not going to be a thin top line in any way, shape, or form. You’re also going to have a fair bit of offset here for a player’s iron, but again, not extreme. I think at a dress, it’s actually a pretty charming looking club in my estimation. So, a lot of tech built into this one in terms of forgiveness. Now, I’ve got it paired with a KBS Tour 120 g stiff shaft, a shaft that I put in a lot of clubs here testing on the channel, and works really well for me. This is also paired with a Golf Pride Tour Velvet. Again, kind of a standard grip here. So again, a club that I think fits into a wide variety of games. We’ll see how my game is here in just a bit. We’re going to head on course right now and put it to the test. So we’re going to play six holes out here. I’m going to go irons only. We’re playing a forward set of TE’s. The goal here is going to be plus two or better. And hopefully it’s better. I think these clubs are absolutely good enough to be better, but we are also kind of facing some less than ideal conditions, especially around the greens here at Carowwood right now in the summer. This is golf in Florida. I’m not in a simulator. This is real life. These are the conditions us mere mortals get. So, let’s see if we can get off to a good start. Four iron in hand on this shorter par4. Water running down the left. I’m going to try to cut one off that water ideally. That’s exactly what I did. Really high trajectory and we are going to be right smack dab in the middle of this fairway. Now, I’ve also brought my Garmin. All the technology I take a look at you can buy over at our partners play better. That’s the best way you can support this show. head over there and when you’re going to purchase launch monitors, watches, rangefinders, that sort of thing, you’re going to get the best price anyways, but it also helps support this show and keeps our reviews honest, unbiased, and independent. Now, getting back to the club here. Feel of these clubs is really interesting. I’ve actually played a full round with these. I’ve also taken them out to the range a couple times now, and what I’ve noticed is that when you hit it in the sweet spot, you know it absolutely immediately. The sweet spot feels buttery. It feels just nice and compressed. It’s lovely. It’s about as good as Cast Club gets, honestly, in terms of feel, but it is a different story if you do not hit the sweet spot, which honestly, again, I think this is a great club to go through your entire career. And one of the reasons is because of the way it feels coming off the face on missits. You know, right away. So, if you really want to work on your consistency, on your ball striking, you’ll know when you hit it well. You’ll know when you hit it poorly with the I240. It’s very, very evident. That one felt great cuz I actually hit the center of the club face. In terms of how far that club went on a fade swing, 186. So, it’s early. It’s dewy. That one did launch very high. We’re going to continue to test all day here what we think of these clubs in terms of distance, but I do think we can probably squeak out a few more yards than what I got right there. Always the first swing of the day is like that. All right. So, I said we’re smack dab in the middle of the fairway. I might be almost standing on the plaque here for our second shot. 141 is the number. I am going to take out the nine iron here in the set and we’re going to hopefully attack. That pin though is cut over the bunker. So, we got to get the distance right and I might favor the right center of this green here. Pretty good strike. It’s drawn right in there. Right center of the green. And we’re on the level there. We’ve got our first birdie putt of the day. Now, on that strike, that was the feel. That was pretty good, but not amazing. So, it tells me immediately that I hit that just slightly toe side and maybe slightly low. I didn’t make a massive divot there. I took just a little bit of grass. Again, the feedback’s exceptional. But what that also tells me is on that slightly, and I’m talking very slight slightly toe, slightly thin miss, I still got it up in the air very nice and high. I think these clubs have enough forgiveness again to fill that wide range of handicaps. All right, let’s see if we can make a putt here. First putt here, we’re going to call this 20 ft. It’s uh right uphill. It’s going to be a little slower here in the morning dew as well. Oh, it’s online. Come on, reach. Oh. All right, we are headed to two, which is going to be a par five for us. We should have three nice shots here with the irons. and we’re going to try some new things out as well here. All right, hole two here. Now, I took more of a fade swing on that first hole here. I’m going to take a more powerful swing for my swing, which is a bit of a draw. So, we’ll really get a good idea here with a 4 iron in terms of distance, assuming I make good contact with it, which I absolutely did. Man, that felt good in the middle. They feel amazing. All right, so let’s go find out how far that one flew. All right, so great distance there, 213. And that’s much more, I think, indicative of what I would normally get cuz I took more of my normal swing there. So, these clubs have plenty of pop for you. Now, the great thing about them is they’re not super pressed to do that. In fact, this 7iron sits at 33°, which is more modern, but also kind of one foot in modern, one foot in the traditional loft structures. I think it’s a really again great area to be for someone who’s not going to get too much benefit when you’re a little bit of a higher handicap and someone as you develop your swing, you can still use this loft structure as you get better and you want to hold more greens. These are going to hold greens. We’ll be testing that all day here today, but it did so on the first hole and I assume we’ll do it throughout the day. Now, there is a power spec loft, so if you do want to press these a couple degrees forward, you can get them that way. There’s also a retrolops if you want to bend them back a couple degrees. Ping willing will do that out of the factory. So much customizability out of ping irons. So important to get fitted. And if you’re going to buy a set of pings, I would highly, highly recommend you do get fitted for them. All right, so I am still 225 out. We saw I hit that 4 iron, which is the lowest club I’ve got here, 214. So we’re not going to get there. So what I’m going to do here is just play a much more conservative shot cuz I want to get as many swings with these clubs as I can in these six holes. And what I’m just going to do is just play a light little wedge and hopefully have mostly a full shot into this green. Buttery smooth. See if we can do it again. All right. So again, we’re finding fairway after fairway here. Now I got 93 yards in. And a test of a good players iron for me is can I control my trajectory? Can I control shot shape as well? We’re going to try to control trajectory here. And also, of course, power because I’m going to take some off of this shot. This is probably about a 125 club for me. 130 if I really go after it. So, we got to take more like a 60 70% swing here. I think I’ve done that. Boy, it’s on a good line. We got ourselves another birdie putt. Yeah, control with these irons, I think, is going to be premium as well. See if we can make a putt now. Boy, it looks like it could break either way. And when it’s that, I just generally aim straight. Ah, it did break that way. I with the water over there, I just my mind tells me it’s got to break in that direction, but it didn’t. Another solid par here. We’re heading to a par three. And uh man, where’s that ace been? Believe it or not, you probably won’t believe it, but I was hitting shots out on the range this morning and I turned to Sean and I told him I just dunked it. I wish we were filming. I wish we were on a golf course. I was on the range. I dunked it on the range and the little flag on the range doesn’t count, but still felt good. Man, it’d be sweet to do it on the course, though. Let’s see if we can make it happen. Okay, so we’ve got 137 and I’ve got nine iron. The reason I do is cuz I felt a little wind in my face. Maybe it’s swirling. I am going to take a nice smooth swing here with the nine. Maybe too smooth. I don’t know. I did hit that again. A little toe side there. I think we caught the front of that green plenty of check. In fact, I think that came backwards, which again was amazing cuz where I hit that was like right here. I didn’t quite catch that in the middle. I’ve noticed now with these irons, again, having played with them a couple of times now, that forgiveness wise, in terms of shot dispersion or direction, these are excellent. Excellent. As good as anything in this category of club. If you don’t hit them in the middle, you’re going to lose a little bit of distance. I’d say 5 to 10 yards. So, I think they’re forgiving, but they’re not game improvement forgiving. Let’s be very clear. This is absolutely a mid to lower handicap iron here. So again, good thing I think if you’re trying to improve your ball striking and you’re between knowing where you’re hitting it on the club and getting those types of results, I think it’s a great combo. So we got a longer putt here for our birdie. I would really just I’m looking at par here. I’d love to just two putt this one. Yeah. By the way, this is my pitch mark here with that nine iron and it did come back about a foot there. Boy, that looks pretty good for speed. Woo! And birdie putt. We got it to the hole as well. Okay, most challenging hole we’re going to play here today by a long shot. I think this is the most challen We have 27 holes at Carowwood. This is to me the hardest of the bunch. So, I’ve got to hit a good T-OT, which we’re going to go four iron again. Hopefully, we get that 200 plus yards because we’re going to need it into this one. Yesterday, I hit a bad T-shot. I had 225 into this green. And it’s that’s takes this hole into bogey territory very quickly. So we’ll see what we can do here. All right. To complicate things, the wind is dead in my face here as well. So par would be a fantastic score in this hole, honestly. Good start. All right, 195. But again, wind dead in my face. I’d say confidence level here is about a three. Hopefully I finish in dry land. I’ve got water on the right, bunker left. Anything dry is fine with me right now. I caught it a little thin. It’s drawn on a very good line. I don’t know if it’s going to get there, though. Yeah. So, that thin shot again, going to lose a little distance there, but straight shot on less than perfect contact. They do very well just staying online, I’ve noticed. Settle. I just did not hit it. All right. So bogey there. I’m fine with a bogey right there. We’re still in very good shape here for the overunder with a shorter par4 and then a par three to finish. Once we get to that par three, by the way, I will be ranking these clubs. But again, there’s still a couple more things I really want to test and make sure I get a really good picture of what these things can do for you. Okay, two more holes to finish strong here. Like I said, this one is a shorter par4. Although the TE’s are back a little bit today and we’re still into that wind, so it’s going to play pretty decently long. Okay, it’s a good start. I still wouldn’t say that was like center contact, but it’s perfect shot shape. And we are dead middle of that fairway again. All right, 159 is the number. Wind in the face and uphill. I think I’m going to go seven iron here. here. And what I’m going to try to do is hit a little bit of a cut because this is the ideal shape here for this particular pin which is cut right side of this green. You’ve got that bunker. If you see where these guys in the umbrellas are in front of me and yes, there are people on the course here today. That’s kind of my aim point with a cut. You know, the wind’s kicked up a little bit and I think again, I really don’t want to be in that bunker. So, I’m going to switch here to a six, which seems like a lot of club, but on this fade shot uphill into the wind, I think it’s the play. Oh, I double crossed myself there. We’re going to land in just a totally fine spot. Actually made great contact. Just swing path was off. See if we can get up and down. Oh, it didn’t come out great, though. Okay, we’re going to have a long par save chance. I got to travel uphill and it’s going to break down right on me hard. It’s not an easy putt. I think I got the speed right. Maybe too much. Too aggressive. Oh man, I thought I put that on the perfect line. The short game just put us over the overunder and that’s a darn shame because these irons deserve a lot better than what they got there on that hole. We do have one more hole to hopefully get that elusive birdie. It’s a par three. Let’s finish strong. After I hit my T-shot, we’re going to rank these clubs and give them a score. 152 is the number. I’m going to go eight iron here. We still have wind slightly into us, but it’s a little more left to right at this point. We need that birdie if we’re going to hit the over under here. Probably my best swing of the day. Did it hold the green? I’m not sure. Boy, it really jumped off that club face. But let’s go ahead and rank these. Distance being that first category for me. Four and a half out of five in terms of distance. You saw that four iron I hit 214. I’ll hit longer ones of course with these game improvement irons, but for a players distance iron, plenty of distance. Again, I think they’ve really nailed the loft structure of these clubs to be playable for many, many years to come. When it comes to forgiveness, again, very forgiving off low hits, very forgiving when it comes to direction. You’re going to lose distance. You’re absolutely going to lose a little bit of distance with these when they’re mishit. I think that’s a good thing. Again, trying to develop your swing. All in all, I’m giving these a four and a half for forgiveness. When it comes to workability, I’m going to give these clubs a four. You didn’t see a lot of it today, but I have tested this one out on the range more extensively, and I can shape my shots. You have seen today though that I’ve been able to control my ball flight very well. So, excellent in terms of workability. You need that out of a player’s irons. Now, when it comes to aesthetics, looks, feel, sound. Looks of these, again, when the first time I saw them, I’m like kind of not my thing. But when I realized, you know, the reasoning behind why they did that badging with that carbon fiber, be able to move that weight down, I kind of get it. And the more I’m looking at these clubs in the back of my bag, the more I like them, especially looking down at them, beautiful. So, looks are good. When it comes to sound, sound is great. When it comes to feel, you know it. They feel great in the middle. Like I mentioned all day here today, they feel a little bit more stiffer there on m hits, which not a bad thing for the type of club these are. I’m going to give it a four for aesthetics. When it comes to value, I’m also going to give this a 4 and 1/2 out of five. I know you’re probably going to be like, why? This is a $1,400 set of irons. Well, Ping irons the best when it comes to the secondary market. So, if you ever don’t get along with these things or you’re ready to step up to the blueprint series or something else that Ping offers or whatever else is out there, you’re going to get top dollar. So, in terms of value, for what you’re getting in a club, the fact that this could last you as long as your entire career, really, for the most part, for the fact you’re going to get that good resale value, four and a half out of five, I think, is a fair score. So, on your screen is the score for these clubs. I have enjoyed them immensely. That last shot did stay on the green. So, I’ve got a chance here for a birdie to hit that overunder. Either way, I’ve had a blast with these clubs, and it wasn’t necessarily the clubs that let me down. It was that last hole in the short game. Once again a great review video. These could be one of the better looking sets of irons Ping have released in a while. I have a minty set of older Ping Rapture V2 irons with the graphite TFC939 shafts I’ve maybe played 20 games in my life with them they were big and chunky but I sure played good golf with them they were so forgiving. These would be a much more slimmed down version with similar loft and much more modern. I think I could get into a set of these in my bag! I currently use Mizuno JPX-921 hot metal irons and love them. But if I was wanting to start from scratch I would definitely consider these. Only thing is the price is a little bit steep as in Canada here they are way over $2000 per set plus taxes. Ouch
Stop it. You already sold us on the Maltbys. I already bought my set and it’s the last set I’m ever gonna buy.
Why pay $1600 for what you can pay $550 for?
This ship has already sailed.
I saw some reviews that the i230 and these are about the same i230 may be even a bit longer. Good option if you want to save some money on last gen.
What do you think?
Ok, I started playing golf in 1967 at age 13 with hand-me-down clubs from my Uncle. Bought a set of Ping Eye2s in 1980 and played them for 15 years. Then joined Team Titleist and have stayed loyal for 30 years. My golf journey has recently ended. But if I could start again, these Pings would be in my bag!
So basically it's the modern equivalent to the Eye2. A club for every skill level.
I hit these the other day, anything Ping builds is awesome.
I’m still using Paradyms, but possibly looking for new irons after this season.
Put these Pings against the Mizuno JPX 925 Pros, thought the Pros were better.
Hate the badges and weight tpc ports, eventually the fall out
I got fitted for i210s a few years ago and I'll stick with them until I can't hit the ball anymore. Specs are the same as these clubs in terms of loft. Feel great on centre hits, good feedback on off centre hits. Can't recommend this style of iron enough.
With a 7 iron at 33* loft, I would not classify these irons as players distance iron more like players irons.
Enjoyed the video very much. That was an accurate assessment. Btw 33o. 7 iron, drop the “distance” part…Players iron…
If this is a players distance iron what is the difference between these and the I530s?
I now people that people swear by ping clubs. I do people that can’t let go of their ping eye 2’s. I will say ping’s hold their resale value like no other. Although the lofts are more traditional than others.. I would make these my gamers.. but in graphite shafts. I do love a good graphite shaft.
What ball is that? Have you tried any of the new vice stiff? Balls hybrid, driver ? I believe the did the wedges correct?
Nope. These are less forgiving than the i230. Hard pass.
Very entertaining and informative and I am a Ping guy!
Great review Gabe, gotta say in regards to looks from the back I think they look very ordinary , I’m not a ping fan , had a set of I-15’s back in the day and they were just so hard feeling, I now play Mizuno pro 245’s and think that they are easily the best clubs I’ve ever used.
They look a bit cheap to me. JMO
Tour velvet makes it look cheap. I’ve played one round with the standard loft .very high and I don’t think I’ll hit them as far as my last clubs but think I’ll like them.
$1400 no thanks, you’ve already shown a couple sets just as good for a third of the price.
Ping i series irons are very versatile and fit many player profiles. I bought my old i20’s in my lie angle-green dot off ebay for $275 many yrs ago. They still are nice irons with STANDARD LOFTS.
Not a good looking iron, too many gaps in the multi construction. But I am sure they will perform for most. I still think a tad too much off set.
I'm more than sure these new Ping irons perform at least as well as the I230's they replace in every working category. Looks wise its the 230 and it's not even close!
This is the worst review I have seen from you. Looks 4.5? Value 4.5? this looked more like an infomercial than a review. BTW the sound of the club sounds fake.
What a great time to get the i230s at a huge discount which are essentially the same clubs
Ping makes super high quality products. I have the G440 irons and they're incredible.
It will be the last clubs you buy until the new ones come out next year.
they look just like the i210,
Is that the Vice Tracer ball? What do you think of it?
Keep in mind every single player is different. Different people will need different brands of clubs. It's all about feel. I just watched a very highly regarded content creator, who used one of the most famous brands out there, state that they tried every brand new club line over the last month ( they had enough pull/ popularity to try the Pings last month before they were released this month) and settled on Callaway. Why? Because of the feel. If everybody had the same feel, there wouldn't be the "BIG 4" and the 5 decent club lines under them, in business. 😊
