Robert MacIntyre speaks to the media following his last round at The Open Championship
Bob’s good man giant in here to stay patient there today but that if you did you were awarded in the end yeah it was uh I was frustrated early on um the bogan four was stupid and it was sloppy being too aggressive at a pin that you just could not miss it on one side um obviously didn’t bird five and then I just had to keep saying to myself just stay patient there’s a good finish there if you if you can stay calm and just pick up the shots where you where you can and hope that the putter warms up and put start going in and then thankfully that’s what happened. We had a couple nice chips obviously chipped in one and then hold a few nice ones. You’re at a stage now where it’s you backing up big major results with another big major result. What does that mean for you? Another step forward. Yeah, I know I’ve got the game. Um I said it yesterday. just I feel like it’s a matter of time if I just keep piecing it all together. But this week I can there’s places statistically on the golf course that I should have been sharper um my wedge play was was really poor this week, but there certain holes this week that were vital and I played them poorly um to really I mean top 10, but to contend was just wasn’t sharp enough in them tough holes. That’s where the drop shots came and ultimately cost me a real chance. But no, after Yes Open, it was it was important for me to come back here. And obviously from last week, I changed my kind of preparation to feel more comfortable in what I was doing. And literally this week was I done everything the exact same as I would do in the States. Week before was a bit more kind of hustle and bustle. There was two programs that were a lot going on, but no, this week felt I felt comfortable. You might well end up around the same position as six years ago and yet you’ve come a hell of a long way in six years. Yeah, I’m a far better equipped golfer. Um I feel like in another week and I piece these things together. Um likes the fourth hole, the 14th hole. Um I know I got one back today, but there was too many drop shots on them. And these things, one shot, two shots, four shots, they’re massive um in these tournaments. And for me looking now, it’s it’s been a great performance, a good result, but it’s another kind of reassurance that I’m I’m in the right place. You just sort of whole experience. How do you sort of reflect on this week when you think of the support you had and coming up there just now? Yeah, this is I mean this is my favorite open venue. Um, be brutally honest, it’s love the golf course, love the place. Not far from home as a cruel flies. It’s just Yeah, I absolutely love this place. Um, shame it’s not here every year, but no, it’s been it’s been unbelievable. The support’s been brilliant and again, the golf course is in unbelievable shape. You said the good golf would take care of the rider cup. It’s done that well and truly. Yeah, I think it has now. Um, I kind of thought the US Open. It might be done, but I’m just again I’ve got four more tournaments before the or three more before the the deadline, but I want to qualify automatically and three more goes, four more goes and we’ll hopefully do that. You might end up top Europe by the look of it. Well, I I mean again I was coming out here trying to win the golf tournament, but um I knew I was too far too far back going into today, so it was just jockey for position. pick up everything you can. I mean, nine months now to the next men’s major. It seems once they start, they just disappear in a flash of an eye. Do you find that as a player as well that it’s here we are middle of July, it’s done and dusted? Ah, it’s quick. I mean, especially the PJ tour season’s I think it’s too jammed. Yeah. But I am a small European was over there. Um, yeah, it’s I feel like the schedule that I’ve been playing for the last I don’t know 3 months has been absolutely hectic. I’ve harded a break, but it’s part of the job. Keep going. When you’re playing well, just keep going. Was another example doing something late on that that’s changed the performance. That’s in that you’ve got now, isn’t it? You know that you know you can dig it out. Yeah. where I noticed that was um was at Valhalla last year. Um I think I eagled the last and finished top 10. So that was my big learning. I remember somewhere before that I was in with a chance through the kitchen sink carrot disaster and that was the next week was there and it was staying patient. Nothing was happening. Stay patient. Stay patient even the last top 10. So that’s kind of I go away from it because I’m human. I lose a plot every now and again and then I come back to it. But it’s so difficult for me to stay stay patient, stay calm. I mean, I was I was getting annoyed out there early on through five, six holes. Um, but it was just just wait on your run. It will come. Might not come this this week, but then go to next week and it’s just let it happen. Um, it’s easy enough to force it and when you force it, errors come. You said you played a lot of golf. what’s happened this week and obviously with the qualification points for Beth P just looking good now does that give you a chance to juggle anything can you maybe take one off or just refresh yourself is there anything you can do go see when I’m driving it this well I just you feel like you can absolutely demolish golf courses um when you’ve got it you can shape it um you got control of it you feel as though you feel as though it’s just around the corner you know what I I’ve got a wind drum the corner. It’s difficult to win. But you feel it when you’ve got the driver going the way it is. It’s it’s why I keep going, but then I run out of energy at some point. Um but no, after the after the playoffs, there’ll be a lot of break when we piece together the plan for for Beth Page. This next majors are gone. Now, what is the goal apart to the RDER Cup between now and the end of the year? Obviously want to win. I want to win, but I mean top 10 in the world. Um very close to it. So there’s a lot of massive things. Top 10 FedEx. I just want to improve every year on on what I’ve done. It might not be visual as in on the FedEx or on the Race Dubai, but statistically from me last year, I mean me and Mike were talking about in the golf course. It’s not even night and day how much better I am at this game or how much more complete of a player. It’s there’s treats. Um, and it’s just allowing that to happen and just little pieces. I mean, I’m I’m frustrated this week from certain parts of my game. And I mean, I’m finishing top 10 major and being frustrated with certain parts of my game. It’s things are good and I just got to wait my turn. Good man. Well done. Thanks for your help. Thanks. Cheers. Thank you. Thank you, mate. Cheers.

Your time will come lad 🏴 great week. Major in the bag pending…🤞
We’re proud of you Bob 🏴
Bob has great taste
Why are we hearing so much background talk on this. Seems very amateur
Bob is going to overtake Tommy and Matty with that self-insight, patience and big brass bollacks
I played Portrush about 10 years ago. What a beautiful cool course and town. Of course the day I played the wind was blowing around 30 mph. The rain was blowing sideways. These guys got the best weather I’ve ever seen for any Open.
Thanks for finishing top 10 Bob, you won me a few bucks. That’s rare for me and my golf bets.
Having been to watch the open at St Andrews, Troon and now today at Portrush, without any doubt this course is the best on the circuit. Utterly outstanding.
You have to walk it to see it.
