There are so many Rules of Golf that it is almost impossible to know each one inside out. But there are 10 rules I see golfers break all the time.
In this video, I run through the rules of golf that I think are the most misunderstood so you can make sure you get them right in your next competition.
So what are they and are you breaking these 10 rules? Let’s get into it…

are you accidentally cheating when you’re out on the golf course today I’m going to be running through 10 rules that I know golfers are always getting wrong and showing you what you can and can’t do when you’re out on the golf course to make sure you don’t get any unwanted penalty shots next time you’re out in competition so you’ve hit a pretty good approach shot into the green but your ball is finished just short On The Fringe of the green and unfortunately there’s loads of pesy sand right around your golf ball so surely you can just go down and wipe it away and the are good in not quite actually the only place on the golf course you can remove sand or mud from your line or around your shot is on the putting surface because we’re off the green it’s actually just tough look and you have to play the ball as it lies in the scenario now as well as sand this also applies to Mud or mole casts and if it’s really bad it might mean you have to chip over it rather than put in like you want to but that’s just the rub of the green and it’s actually tough look now there is one exception to this Rule and that’s if the sand or the mud appears after your ball finishes there for example if I had hit my ball here and then my playing partner was in the bunker behind me they hit up and threw sand over my ball I’m allowed to have the lie that I had when the ball finished in that position since the Sands appeared after I hit my ball there I’m then allowed to move that sand and recreate the lie that I originally had but if that’s not the case It’s just tough look and you’re going to have to go over it or through it not bad but I think it could have been closer if that pesky sound wasn’t there while you’re here I would really appreciate if you could hit that subscribe button over 80% of people who watch my videos aren’t actually subscribed and having a bigger subscriber number really helps in terms of the content opportunities we get which just means I can bring more videos back to you so please hit that subscribe button and while you’re there you might as well like this video and drop us a comment about what else you want to on the channel now another similar scenario is if you get pitch marks that are on or off the green now in this scenario there’s a pitch mark right in front of my golf ball but because it’s in The Fringe and not on the green I’m not allowed to replace it now this doesn’t come down to where you are on the golf course or where your golf ball is the rule is simply that you can replace a pitch mark on the green but you can’t replace one anywhere else so in this instance I would love to hit this as a put up the green feels like a fairly simple shot but actually that pitch Mark’s definitely going to get in the way so I’m going to pull my wedge out and chip it instead now it’s actually quite a harsh penalty if you get these things wrong if you remove sand when you’re not on the green or if you repair a pitch mark That’s not on the green IT classes improve in your lie and it will give you the general penalty which is a two shot penalty golf’s hard enough we just don’t need to be adding those extra shots on so next time you’re in either of those scenarios remember the rules don’t prefer your lie just tweak your shot around it that actually turned out pretty good good in the end you’ve hit a bit of a rubbish t-shot but luckily your ball has just stayed in play but annoyingly this out of balance post is really in the way and it’s just on the line of where you want to hit down the hole so surely that’s not a problem you can just go ahead pick it up and move it out of the way you should actually think twice before doing this because a boundary post is not a movable object and that means you’re not allowed to move it so if it’s in your way it’s just tough look you have to go around it I’ll think of another way to hit your shot because it’s a boundary post if you pick it up and move it to hit your shot you get the general penalty which is a two shot penalty and we really don’t want to be getting involved in that so if you’re here it’s much better to go around it or if it’s a total disaster and you’re in a situation where you really can’t swing what you can do instead is choose to take an unplayable drop and drop away from that now there’s a few ways you can do this you can take your two Club lengths from the point of where the ball is in any direction as long as you’re not near the hole you can go back in line with the ball and the pin or you can go back to where you hit your previous shot from and hit the shot again all those scenarios just incur a one shot penalty but means you’re back out of the way of the fence post wall whatever it may be and you can hit your shot into the green you’ve hit the ball in the rubbish which let’s face it wouldn’t be extremely uncommon then you you stumble across a golf ball but you’re not sure it’s yours well obviously you can just pick it up to identify it and check what it is but wait don’t be so Hasty if you did that in this scenario you would actually incur a one shot penalty the reason being you have to mark your ball before you pick it up to identify it this is because it is one of the rules where you have to replace the ball back on the identical spot and how do you know if you put it back in the right spot if you haven’t marked it in the first place so let’s rewind you’ve just found your ball you want to pick it up and check it’s yours make sure you get a TEEG or a ball marker pop it in next to the ball then pick it up identify if it’s yours place it back and you can head off again without getting any penalty shots pretty well out but I really need to hit my hours did you know playing too slow is actually classed as cheating according to the rules of golf golf is a game that’s meant be played at a prompt pace and if you play too slowly you could be penalized for the first offense of this it’s a one shot penalty for the second offense of this it’s a two shot penalty and for the third offense you can actually get disqualified so next time you’re out on the golf course make sure you’re picking up that paer I definitely know a few people who need to work on that make sure you send this to a mate or tag a mate in the comments below if you know they’re too so you’re off the Beaten Track again but this time there’s some long grass intruding in your back swing but surely you can just stamp it down and get it out of the way if you’ve been listening to the rest of this video maybe you have caught on by now and you can’t do this because again its class is improving you lie and it will give you a two shot penalty now this all comes down to the fact that you have to play the course as it is found which means you can’t change the light around your golf ball if it helps improve your shot you can’t change anything in the path of your intended swing and you also can’t change anything around your stance now you are obviously allowed to lightly ground your club and take a reasonable stance you can also move movable objects like leaves or Twigs but what you can’t do is Bend break or move any natural object around the golf ball so next time you end up with a tricky lie and you think you can just shift everything around to make it a bit easier think again that will give you a two shot penalty and I think I would definitely class it as cheating you hit it in the roof so much you should know how to get it out without improving your lie anywhere this is probably the most common rule I see broken in golf and I refer to it as nearest not nicest now in the scenario I’m on a path now luckily here at my home Club at all Woodley I get free relief off here so I don’t have to ruin my club or maybe my wrists by hitting off this gravel and also look at this nice lovely Short Grass here which will easily leave me an easy shot into the green now this is where most people go wrong when you’re taking free relief from a path such as this you get the nearest point of relief that means you have to drop on the nearest piece of ground available to you that’s not the path that doesn’t mean you get to pick where you want to put it and you can just travel around until you find somewhere nice to put your golf ball now it’s important to remember in this scenario you are getting relief from the path not from the bush next to it or the long grass next to it and you’re not actually entitled to have a shot after you take a drop all you’re entitled to is to move it so you are no longer on the path what that means is in this scenario I’m going to have to drop here into this nice bit of Shrubbery which isn’t ideal by the end of the day I probably shouldn’t have hit it on the path So It’s just tough look now you don’t have to play it from here you can obviously choose to take an unplayable drop that means you can drop this within two Club lengths in any direction you can go back in line with here and the flag or you can go back to where you hit your previous shot and rehit the shot again all under a one stroke penalty now if you do choose to take the nearest point of relief relief you get full relief from the path so my stance my ball and everything has to be off so in this scenario I would end up stood up here now it is worth noting from that nearest point of relief I do get one Club length Arc so it might be that I can come slightly back drop on this little bit of grass instead of R in the ferns and give myself a little bit of a chance n or virtually certain a phrase that can get even the most experienced golfers confused now the there are lots of scenarios where we hit our ball into a penalty area and we see it Splash in the water or we see it clearly run in now there’s other scenarios where they might be blind shots we can’t fully see all the way up we’re simply too far away and we think it might have gone in but we’re not 100% sure now according to the rules you have to be 95% certain your golf ball has gone in the penalty area in order to take relief from it which is pretty mindboggling isn’t it like am I 93 92 94 now this all comes back to the phrase known or virtually certain so is there a scenario where your golf ball couldn’t be in that penalty area now here there’s not really anything else in the way it’s pretty short grass if I’ve seen my ball come clearly in this direction and land in this near vicinity it’s pretty unlikely that it’s not in this water hazard so in this scenario I’d go ahead and let myself take relief from this penalty area drop the golf ball and get on with my shot now in this scenario I wouldn’t necessarily be so certain there’s a bush there which is out of bounds which is pretty near to this water there’s also lots of long grass and ferns just to the side of here and I wouldn’t really feel confident enough to say that it was definitely in the penalty area now in this scenario you might really want to just be like yeah it’s in there drop the ball and get on with it but it actually be a breach of the rule if you did that and you would get a two shot penalty so if you don’t know for 95% certainty whatever the hell that means that your ball is in this hazard Ard you have to go back and replay your shot I know it’s really annoying and you’re probably going to say it’s going to annoy the group behind you but it’s just what’s in the rules you’re just going to have to call that group behind you through and head on back if you’re playing in a competition you’re on a tricky path three and you’re not really sure what club to hit so you start rifling through your playing partner bags to establish what club they’ve hit to give you a bit of a better idea did you know if you do this you’re actually breaking the rules you’re not allowed to take advice from someone when you’re out on the golf course and actually going in their bag and moving their stuff classes is taking advice now what you can do is have a little peek as long as you’re not touching anything but you can’t go in and touch anything in the golf bag if you do you would receive the same penalty as if you ask them verbally what club they’d hit or if you tell someone what you’ve hit or give them other advice out on the golf course this is because the only person who’s allowed to give you advice out on the golf course is a caddy if you have one so when you’re in competition make sure you’re not meddling around with other people’s equipment or asking them for advice or telling anyone anything basically just shut up and keep your hands to yourself you could also just learn your yardages better so you don’t have to look

For the last one about advice – can you ask your playing partner in a 4BBB match?
The ob post, 2 club lengths either way, surely 2 club lengths the wrong way would be ob..😮
Nice to see a woman golfer who doesn't have her tits out for views
What’s more annoying than replaying the 95% certainty penalty shot is the fact that you didn’t say if it’s relay replay with a stroke or two?
Surely the sand or worm casts are classified as loose impediments?
How about course found premium golf balls performance against budget new balls as a new video.
Great video very informative 👏
Thanks , I learned lots
The best places I play aren't immaculate. They are cheap municipal courses we play for fun. It is not fun following some of the rules. We aren't turning our score cards in to anyone or cheating anyone out of money. Would never break any rules in a tournament or a bet. But, for fun…take a mulligans or 2. Drop that ball a few feet over without penalty. I think when people get super caught up in the rules they stop having fun. Many, many people leave golf every year. I think some of these rules encourage people to leave.
Brilliant video, Absolutely Awesome YouTube Channel.

I would clarify that it is the location of the sand, NOT the location of the ball that matters when deciding if you can brush it out of your line. Just like with repairing pitch marks.
Next, when lifting a ball to identify it. I would stress the ball must be replaced EXACTLY as it was before. Not just on the same spot but in the same conditions. For example, if the ball is originally half buried in some loose pine straw, after checking it, it must be in the same spot and again half buried in the loose pine straw. Too many people use this rule as an opportunity to replace their ball "gently" elevated above some problem.
Patrick Cantlay checked out around the 5:40 mark…..(although it took him 15 minutes to get there anyway)
I don't care about most of these idiotic rules. I play to have fun.
Most golf rules are idiotic and a waste of time and energy.
All of these rules videos need to have a giant asterisk..the rules of golf are meaningless unless it is a sanctioned tournament. If you're playing a casual round, there is no such thing as "cheating." Keep up with the group in front and fix your divots etc. If you're falling behind because you are worried about the rules you're being a jerk.
What about leaves or pebbles on the fringe, are they classed as loose impediments or treated the same as sand?
Hi Hannah. When taking an unplayable lie from the ferns in your video, is it allowable to drop or place the ball so that it is back on the path but nearer to the other edge of the path and therefore you can take nearest relief on the better side? Of course, you still get the same penalty shot but a much better lie. I think I saw this done in a major.
Great content
Love the way you say "know"!
Great video, however, i can't relate to it because I never ever cheat accidentally. 🤣
