ARCADIA BLUFFS – The BEST course in Michigan! FORE 1 – Golf course stories presented by Turtle Golf
every Golf Course has a story a unique feature history secret or Reason to play but courses can’t talk so they can’t tell their own stories this is four 4 minutes telling the told and Untold Stories of golf courses all around the world [Music] the focal point of Arcadia Bluffs is and has always been Lake Michigan and the lakes Shore Bluffs but this strikingly beautiful landscape brings with it a formidable challenge a Relentless pounding [Music] wind The Continuous wind rolling in off the water dictates the course designs down to the smallest detail even the curiously unique flags and flag sticks original fiberglass flag sticks quickly proved inadequate bending back and forth in the wind caused splintering and worse a pulling effect resulting in mounding around the halls that became a disruption to the very essence of the game putting after extensive trials a solution was found a custom design was created a shorter octagon-shaped wooden stick reinforced with fiberglass at both ends these flag sticks varying in height from 5 to 9 ft are designed to endure the punishing winds while maintaining visibility across the course’s varied terrain the flags themselves reflect the [Music] landscape custom cut double stitched and intentionally smaller than standard flag tags to help reduce wind drag the colors symbolize the sun Lake Michigan and the Rolling Green Fairways the curvature represents the undulating Bluff line across the Horizon fittingly that undulating Bluff line has brought even more challenges to the course in recent years Arcadia’s shining gem perched at top the Bluffs and along the shore of Lake Michigan offers some of the most breathtaking views on the course but sitting that closely to the coastline the threat of coastal erosion lurks below the Bluffs below the 12th green have eroded significantly since the course opened in 1999 and the green will eventually become unplayable falling into the lake Below in an attempt to protect the playability of the course Arcadia has built a second green to the right and further in land from the original standing on the 12th t-box one day will be a very different experience than it is today a tea box that has already went through an environmentally driven change in 2019 the Detroit Free Press ran an investigation on an age-old Arcadia tradition of hitting a ceremonial t-shot into the lake below Arcadia reacted quickly removing the reference to this tradition from their website as well as placing fancies and signs along the shoreline discouraging golfers from adding to the pollution issue Lake Michigan already faces while the chor has been facing these unique challenges thousands of visiting golfers every year have faced their own they’ve battled the wind the Bluffs and the undulating greens all while enjoying one of the most picturesque courses in the state of Michigan and possibly the world from the first tea onwards every guest puts their skills to the test on a Scotland style links course some architect critics will argue that the course is nothing special but what cannot be argued is the beauty pristine conditioning and all around experience the course [Applause] [Music] offers anyone who has played has their own Arcadia story share yours with a quick comment or let us know what courses we should feature next we’d love to have you subscribe to join us on our golfing journey and if you have a unique story or piece of history from your favorite course send it our way we’d love to feature your story along with the course [Music]
