From grounding the club in the bunker, you can see when he took the club back, he definitely took some sand back to dropping your ball away from its original position. These are the 10 most shocking cheating moments in golf history. The 2019 Hero World Challenge became very famous for not so good reasons involving Patrick Reed. During the tournament on the 11th hole, Reed’s ball landed in a bunker. But that’s where the controversy began. As he prepared to make his next shot, he took a few practice swings. But while doing so, he sneakily improved his lie by moving sand away from his ball. This was his practice swing. And you can see when he took the club back, he definitely took some sand back behind it. This brazen rule violation was caught on camera and it ultimately led to a two-stroke penalty. During interviews, Reed insisted he had no intent to cheat and it was all a misunderstanding. Well, tell that to the camera, Mr. Reed. But Reed isn’t the only one guilty of cheating. Phil Miglson has always been a bold player, but the time when he hit a moving ball at the 2018 US Open was truly mind-blowing. His speed has been terrible. Whoa. Whoa. It happened during the third round at Shinikok Hills when Mickelson’s bogey putt rolled past the hole and was about to go down the slope. But before it could, Mickelson ran towards the ball and hit it back toward the hole before it stopped. His intentional rule violation earned him a two-stroke penalty, shocking everyone to that day. Later in the interview, he admitted this action. Respect by anybody. I know it’s a two- shot penalty and uh at that time I just didn’t feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over. I took the two- shot penalty, moved on. It’s uh and stated that he would rather take the penalty than let the ball go down the slope. Some say it’s cheating, while some believe he’s just taking advantage of the rules, just like this next one. Back at the 2013 Masters, the renowned Tiger Woods also faced a cheating scandal. It was on the 15th hole during his second round when Wood’s wedge shot hit the pin and bounced back into the water hazard. Now he had to take a drop, but the camera caught him dropping the ball farther back than its original spot. A TV viewer spotted this rule violation and alerted Augusta National and later Woods himself admitted to his deed. The officials reviewed and gave Woods a two-stroke penalty, giving him a triple bogey eight. Now, he did sign an incorrect scorecard, which means disqualification. But all thanks to a recent rule change, Woods managed to get away with just a penalty. What a lucky guy. But this next golfer wasn’t very lucky. Lexi Thompson suffered one of the most heartbreaking golf moments when she played in the 2017 ANA Inspiration. During the final round of the tournament, the officials gave her a very controversial four-stroke penalty, all because of a TV viewer who reported a rule violation. The penalty was given due to an incident in the third round when she had marked, lifted, and replaced her ball on the 17th green, an inch closer to the hole. Marking the position of the ball, then picking it up. But when she puts it back, it’s not in precisely the same place. Neither Lexi nor the rules officials knew about this mistake. But a TV viewer spotted the error and alerted officials resulting in the penalty which cost her the entire tournament by losing in a playoff to So Yian Ryu. Years before the Lexi incident, the female golfer Chella Choy found herself in a similar incident, but she handled it very poorly. The scandal happened at the 2013 LPGA Canadian Pacific Women’s Open when on the 10th hole, Choy was about to make a short putt, but when she marked her ball on the green, she picked it up and replaced it from its original position with about an inch difference. Once again, a TV viewer spotted it and reported the officials. But when the rule violation was confirmed, Choy, instead of taking the penalty, refused and withdrew from the tournament. Now, this is no way to handle a cheating allegation because that only strengthens them and indirectly admits you cheated and have too much ego to accept it. Dustin Johnson still has nightmares on the day when he played at the 2010 PGA Championship at Whistling Straits. He was leading by one shot and on the 72nd hole, everything went south when he made the second shot from what he thought was just a littered patch of dirt. He even grounded his club in it. But in reality, it was no patch of dirt, but an official bunker. And all these bunkers all over the golf course. This is where we think he grounded it there. And you see, like every player, you kind of then move the blade behind the ball before you start your swing. Unfortunately, this led to a rules violation, costing him a two-stroke penalty, knocking him out of a potential playoff, giving Martin Kr the win. Shocked, right? But this next one is more mind-blowing. Brian Davis is a true sportsman, and he proved it when he reported a penalty on himself at the 2010 Verizon Heritage. It happened during a sudden death playoff against Jim Furick when Davis’s ball landed on the green on the shore. But as he made the hit to chip the ball, Davis noticed that his club brushed a loose read. The officials didn’t notice it, but Davis, instead of taking advantage of it, decided to report it and take the two-stroke penalty. The TV footage even confirmed the penalty, and Davis’s honesty earned him a significant amount of respect. Wish everyone was as honorable as him. At least these next ones aren’t. At the 2016 US Women’s Open playoff, Anna Nordquist suffered a two-stroke penalty for grounding her club in a fairway bunker on the second playoff hole, the par4 17th at Cordoval. But the controversy begins here. She was not informed of her mistake until she had already played her third shot on the 18th hole. While everyone else, including her opponent Britney Lang, knew about it, they kept it a secret as it would give her an advantage. This late ruling dramatically shifted the match with Lang ultimately winning her first major title. It’s clear that if Nordquist had been informed earlier, she would have made adjustments to her strategy and might have changed the results of the tournament. What do you think? Was it right to keep the ruling a secret from her or not? During the 2001 British Open at Royal Lith in St. An’s, something very unexpected happened with Ian Wooenham. Throughout the tournament, Ian dominated the fairway with his skills and even tied for the lead. But before he could make a second tea, his caddy, Miles Burn, informed him of a mishap. In Ian’s bag, there were two drivers, meaning he was carrying 15 clubs instead of the allowed 14. This one mistake earned him a two-stroke penalty and a frustrated throw of the extra club to the ground, but he was still generous enough not to fire his caddy for it. David Duval went on to win the tournament, making it a truly heartbreaking moment for Ian’s fans. Started with Reed. Let’s end with Reed. This time, the controversy happened during the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open at Tory Pines. In the video, you can see Reed admitting that his second shot got embedded when it landed in the rough. But the video also shows that his ball bounced before settling. But somehow neither Reed, his playing partners, Caddies, nor a nearby volunteer saw it bounce. Once Reed confirmed the ball didn’t bounce by asking a volunteer, he marked the ball and lifted it before the rules officials were called to the scene. The official also confirmed the ball was embedded and protected Ree from facing any penalties, thanks to which he went on to win the tournament. Fans were divided on this matter. Some say he should have been penalized while others don’t. Either way, Reed definitely got away with that one. If you enjoyed watching these shocking cheating moments, you’ll love this video, too.
