Mike Tirico has been considered one of the best broadcasters in sports for countless years, but golf fans aren’t exactly fond of his performance at Royal Portrush.

Tirico, a five-time Sports Emmy Award winner, is best known for his work as the voice of “Sunday Night Football.” That being said, NBC utilizes him for the Olympics, horse racing’s Triple Crown, and the U.S. Open among other sporting events.
Even though NBC has leaned on Dan Hicks and Kevin Kisner for its coverage of the 153rd Open Championship, Tirico has been featured on Friday’s broadcast. So far, the early reactions on social media haven’t been kind.
“Less Mike Tirico more golf,” one fan declared.

“I know the expectations are incredibly low but it really is ridiculous how little golf NBC shows its audience,” a second fan wrote on X. “Recaps and long Mike Tirico intros, then have to show delayed stuff that could have been shown live because of said recaps/Tirico. A vicious cycle indeed.”
“Dan Hicks is bad and Tirico is terrible,” a third fan commented.
“Mike Tirico is annoying me with all this talk of a country that doesn’t exist (Northern Ireland). I wish he would shut up and let Pauly McGinley take the reins and refer to the North of Ireland correctly,” another fan said.

The third round of the Open Championship will be televised on NBC from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Saturday. There’ll also be featured groups on Peacock in the early morning.
Fans should expect to hear more of Tirico’s commentary this weekend.
As of this writing, Scottie Scheffler and Matt Fitzpatrick are at the top of the leaderboard.
