And now it’s 10:00 a.m. Let’s just get down to it and it’s time for your sports picks. Strap yourselves in, folks. From two guys who have covered the teams you’re passionate about for years, we are professionals. This is Jake Scott and Ben Anderson on 975 the KSL Sports Zone. Jacob 975 the KSL Sports Zone. Jake Scott Ben Anderson. Is this the music video that Jim Rome was in? This is the one where they’re running through the town. Yeah. Well, they’re Yeah, but they’re like naked in all their videos for some reason, but there’s the one they Yeah. run through town and then Jim Rome randomly is in it. Why rock and roll and nudity have such a strong connection? Rebellion. Is that what it is? But like mobsters aren’t naked and they’re rebelling against society, right? Speak for yourself. You’re a mobster. Uh, no. No, no, no. I I think it’s the shock factor. It’s a marketing thing. Okay. There’s probably some drugs involved as well. I don’t necessarily want to imply the young men on Blink182 are using drugs of any kind. No, like Jim Morrison historically would get in trouble for nudity, right? And well, that is just addiction, honestly. Yeah, that might. And that’s what I’m wondering. Is it just, you know, flee was always naked for Red Hot Chili Peppers? I think that was shock that that’s horrible drug issues marketing because oh he’s going to play in his underwear or or less you know. Yeah. Uh streaking is shocking in general to make and Blink182’s thing was being funny and streaking is also kind of funny. It is funny. Yeah. And to do it in a music video is shocking. I don’t think it I don’t think it’s uh I don’t think it has anything to do with But if I remember correctly, there were concerts of them playing where it was just Yeah. their guitars covering them up. Yeah. Shock factor. Yeah. Yeah. Then the Ben Andersons of the world leave the the the concert and go, “Could you believe it?” And they certainly had that. If you look at some of their old sets, they had they were designed for shock factor, right? So, okay. Yeah, you’re probably right. that it’s I mean it was ended up being pop punk music but it’s punk music which the whole thing is the shock you know like what uh the Sex Pistols would say about the Queen and all this stuff it was all about yeah abrasive I mean that’s the that’s the draw of the music that’s the mark marketability of the music and to counter my mob take with all due respect to those in organized crime they’re trying to keep their heads down they’re not necessarily trying to be the loudest people famously good fellas is don’t don’t buy the the coat. Yeah. Right. Don’t buy the fur coat. Don’t drive the Cadillac. Yeah. Don’t be that guy. Yeah. All right. Anyway, that’s my that’s my theory for you. Okay. And people identify with it because they’re mad or something. They they embrace the shock or they they don’t like their parents or something. I don’t know. But yeah, it’s been somewhat consistent throughout modern music. And that was a weird music video. Yeah. But it was funny. Memorable. It worked. Do you ever Now, is this admitting to a crime? You ever been a streaker? Uh, when I was very little one time. I’m not talking about like you took off your diaper and ran. No, I mean honestly like sixth grade. I don’t know why, but dared for sixth grade. And I wasn’t like at school, so don’t do that. But no, not since. I never have uh gone streaking skinny dipping. Uh yeah, I’ve done that before kind of. I have a funny story surrounding that, but I’m not going to tell that on the air. Uh but uh no, I held the door at a library for some streakers. Oh, yeah. Yeah. During college, I probably would admit it. I would assist and not inter interrupt. Yeah. They started from like the stacks or something and then ran through them because usually they’re screaming or people around them are screaming and there’s a commotion. Yeah. Yeah. And so I just open the door. Yeah, absolutely. Go right ahead. Yeah, let me make this easier for you. Yeah, I’m with you. I would aid in a bed a streaker in the right situation. If you’re a creep, you’re running through a grocery store. See, this is the fine line of streaking. Yeah. The the really the problem with it, honestly. Yeah. Right. And why you probably need to outlaw it, period. I think it is illegal. Yeah, it is. Right. But why it should be persecuted regardless of context. Agreed. Yeah. And you know me, I believe in corporal punishment. I think like a severe beating would do, but yeah, you know. Mhm. Yeah. I think it technically is illegal. Christian strikes me as the streaking type. Well, he goes to Burning Man every year. I believe the fifth. I don’t think what they do at Burning Man is considered streaking. No, but it wouldn’t be allowed in the streets of Salt Lake City. I don’t know. is but is uh I hear Burning Man’s really corporate these days. I believe that. I believe it’s a bunch of dudes who are like I’ve tried uh hallucinogens for the first time and now I go to Burning Man and I fly in on my 8 million jet. Yeah, I think it’s become that. What? Yeah. Okay. How Woodstock became a thing and then became something entirely different by the end of their run. You know what I mean? Yeah. It’s like the people that are late to the snarks are ruining everything. Late to the thing. What’s that music festival down uh in Palm Springs that Coachella that used to be somewhat of a like an indie kind of festival, right? And now, isn’t it Beyonce? And yeah, the tickets are thousands. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Yeah. And it’s like more of a Kardashian thing than it is No, it just it’s not the money per se. It is, but it’s not the money per se. It’s the uh the culture. It’s the pop culture. Yeah. The pop culture catches on. It’s the same way I felt about my rainbow flip flops, man. I I bought them at the beach. Bought them at a cool surf shop. Never seen anybody else with uh with rainbows. Was super stoked. Going back to old Utah, gonna set the trend or whatever. And I wore rainbows for a long time. And then I saw somebody that I perceived to be somewhat of a square wearing wearing rainbows. And I was like, I’m done with this cool anymore. Yeah. I’m not this isn’t for me anymore. Okay. You know what I’m saying? It’s not Rainbow’s fault that people like me who other people look up to set a trend. Sure. They just enjoyed the ride. But once somebody else is on it, it’s no longer for you. It’s no longer the same thing. Okay. You know what I mean? Woodstock started out a bunch of smelly hippies, right? And it turned into uh whatever Limp Biscuits crowd was. Yeah. MTV, right? A lot of people blame MTV for ruining it. And all the the documentary about that last Woodstock, by the way, if if nobody’s ever seen it, A+ uh it’s it’s really really good. But the hippie that was part of the group of hippies that did the first one didn’t really turn out to be a hippie in the end and really tried to uh market that thing. People find ways to make money. Yeah. Corporatize it. And then when they brought Woodstock back, didn’t the fences all fail? And so they lost a bunch of money that time and then they decided to do it again on like a airport or like military hangers thing. Yeah. This is going to go great. Where’s Crosby? Steals a dash. All right, Ben, I I enjoyed uh your hour with David James this morning. Thanks. A lot of good thoughts on the Utah Jazz and others. I think as David and I talked about, if you’re just tuning in, we just tried to separate, you know, kind of what does and doesn’t matter in summer league. And the truth is most of it probably doesn’t matter, unfortunately. you know, Cody Williams scoring 23 points last night is probably not an indication that he’s going to score 23 points in the regular season, but is there anything there? And maybe it’s just that he is moving in the right direction and not moving backwards. And that might just be as simple as it it has to be. And then guys who aren’t moving in the right direction, some of the issues we’ve seen with Isaiah Collier, which is where I think I keyed in on and his shooting numbers could be some cause for concern. It is where you keyed in key keyed in on. And I found it interesting that you are already retiring Isaiah Collier. Uh, it’s over. Not quite. But enjoy Italy, but I don’t think the narrative has changed on Kee, which or excuse me, on Isaiah Collier, which was, yeah, he’s got to learn to shoot. No. And and hasn’t shown any improvement. I’m I’m teasing you about that, but because we’ve talked about it a zillion times on this show. He can do everything else well at an NBA level. No doubt. If you can’t shoot, he can’t play. Well, he can, but he just can’t play all the time. Yeah. Can’t be your starter or whatever. I mean, the point you made about uh Walker Kesler is I think a good one. And you can’t play pick and roll basketball in the NBA anymore because if they can go under every screen, then you know, you’re not going to make it. I mean, you if if you’re a point guard and you’re going to play pick and roll, you have to be able to pull up and hit that three at a somewhat useful rate. So, they have to guard it. It’s it’s like it’s the reason the Jazz didn’t win more with Ricky Rubio as as much as he turned out to be as good or better than Mike Connley for different reasons, they had a tough time because you got to play pick and roll with Rudy. And if they can go under every screen, it really solves the the problem. You know, it solves the math equation before it even gets started. And I’m just trying to do this quickly off the top of my head. I’m not going to do it for all 30 teams, but I’ll just section of NBA teams. Dallas Mavericks point guard. Kyrie Irving can shoot. Miami Heat point guard. I don’t even know who teams. Yeah. Okay. So, we’ll just go to the top. Oklahoma City Thunder point guard. Shay Gillis Alexander can shoot. Cleveland Cavaliers point guard. Darius Garland or Don Mitchell can shoot. Boston Celtics point guard. Drew Holiday or Derek White can shoot. Houston Rockets point guard. Fred Van Valet can shoot. Yeah, you have to go. Jaylen Brunson can shoot. You have to either go over or switch on all those guys. Luca can shoot. Jamal Murray can shoot. Tyrese Hallebertton can shoot. James Harden can shoot. And if you can’t, you can’t play pick and roll. Yeah, there’s just not there’s not really a lot of guys who can’t shoot that are on good teams. So, I think a lot of times going into second seasons, we meaning observers of this fine sport are just looking for improvement and it’s I don’t know what what’s what’s the word you want to attach to it. You know, it’s not a good sign that we didn’t see that improvement in summer league. And I made the joke about closing the book on Collier already. I don’t think that’s necessary, but unless it improves, it will be at some point. One of the things I hate about recruiting rankings and Isaiah Collier being the number one overall recruit and maybe I shouldn’t say I hate it but I’m really skeptical of is when I see a guy who’s a number one recruit and then I see him for the first time and he’s physically superior to everybody else. Yeah. because oh, you’re a man playing against children and for whatever reason your body started developing at 13 years old and by the time you were 18 and a senior in high school you were nearly a full-g grown adult and most of the other players look like they’re 16 or 17 years old even if they’re 18 and I am a little leerary of that and then some players LeBron James or whatever continue to develop physically and get even better and better and better and it didn’t matter that he was a manchild. But, you know, Isaiah, look at him in high school, is bigger than everybody, stronger than everybody, he’s faster than everybody, and if you watch his highlights, he just gets downhill every time. It’s like, well, yeah, he can push everybody off of him. Just bulldoze into everybody and they bounce off and he gets a layup and he was the number one overall recruit and then it didn’t really work that well at USC. And I’m not trying to pile on Isaiah right now, but we’re talking about his potential future as the starting point guard for the Jazz. It’s like, well, those physical skills are incredibly diminished once you get to the NBA because everybody’s pretty big versus somebody like Cody Williams who’s kind of interesting because he has clearly not developed physically, but his skills are still weirdly good enough to have nights like last night where he has 23 points and four assists and two rebounds and two steals. And I don’t I don’t know if he’s an NBA player going forward, but like if he develops physically and his skills are already good enough to keep him on the floor against his peers, which this level is his peers. The NBA is not quite his peers yet. He’s not that good. Then maybe it all starts to click and work out if the body comes around. And bodies generally get better in the NBA because you eat well. You know, you are you work out a lot. You have trainers. So that should get better. So, you’re betting on Isaiah doing something he’s never done before. And you’re betting on Cody developing in a way that generally guys do develop. And I think that’s where the interesting dichotomy is between two players who are in the same draft class. Why are we or why are people uh yourself included obviously still talking about him being a recruit? Well, guys do get drafted off their reputation even a year later. some mouth breather living in his parents’ basement writing for whatever.com went to an AA tournament and watched this guy bully a bunch of smaller players and decided that he was some number one recruit ignoring the fact that he wasn’t a shooter. Right. No. Exactly right. Why? Why do we Why? If he still cares about that, then that’s really a nobody should care about that. Once you’re at the next level or once you’re in college, once you’re drafted in the NBA or whatever, that dot writer’s opinion ceases to mean anything. Your draft pick shouldn’t matter. Where you were drafted shouldn’t matter. Truthfully, once you have your ticket on the bus, you are on the bus with everybody else. What do you do with it? Who traded for James Wiseman? Detroit. Was it Detroit? Whatever it was. Yeah, I think it was Detroit. Ask me how I know they’re dumb. How do you know they’re dumb? Because they go, “Oh, this guy was the second pick at one point, so maybe there’s Yeah, even though the Warriors made him the second pick. They were invested in his success and they wouldn’t play him because he was terrible.” Yeah, that number two pick, it means nothing. Andis Caner is the one of the highest picks in Utah Jazz history. I mean, who cares? And Andis himself had a famous quote where somebody asked him about playing time and why it was at a locker room cleanout. And he goes, “Cuz I’m a top five pick.” That was his answer. Yeah. For why he should have a bigger role on the team. Who cares? What are you going to do? Right. Paul Milsap was on that same team, right? I was picked in the 40s. And it’s in this case it’s almost held against Isaiah Collier that he was the top recruit whatever like like he’s a disappointment in some way because he’s not living up to an evaluation that was wildly flawed in the first place you know and so we look at Kier and go number one he was number one recruit and he went in the second round kind of failure that I mean I’m not picking on you but you yourself had tried to say I’m not trying to pick on him talking about his time at USC or whatever. He he never changed. You know what I mean? Like it’s you I guess you put it on your resume. I was the number one recruit. Scout.com thought I was the number one one recruit in the country. But guess what it means? Silch. Nothing. Yeah. Nothing. And in fact, in Isaiah’s case, it might have done him a disservice. I don’t know this uh at all, but who’s to say he wouldn’t have worked on his shot more had he have been the hundth recruit in the country and opened his eyes to the fact that like if I don’t bring this up to about 35 from three, I’m not going to get to where I want to go. I’m not good enough. Yeah. So, I wish we should just leave we should leave the draft behind. I totally agree with you there. But we should absolutely leave their high school recruiting whatever behind. That doesn’t mean anything, right? And the further you get away from it and you look at the top 10 recruits in high school basketball, generally one or two is in the NBA, it’s usually not the number one overall recruit because you have nine other players behind them in the top 10 that are in the pool and generally pretty good. And yes, you have people looking at flawed situations with terrible context with bodies at 18 that are not going to look like they are at 25. And yeah, the number eight guy from the recruiting class is Devin Booker or whatever and the number one recruiting class is a James Weisman. And I’m talking about two totally different classes, but that’s very common. You see a guy who’s bigger, physically dominant or whatever, that’s the top recruiter, number two overall recruit, and it doesn’t really mean anything. It just doesn’t. I had a buddy who is one of the smartest guys I know, and I I say that as he is currently very smart coming out of high school. I mean act was there Ben you know all the things that he was headed to a career in science somewhere uh because he was just a really smart guy. Ask me how many years it took him to get his undergraduate degree. Nine nine years to get his undergraduate degree. Not because he was failing classes but basically because he was farting around. Yeah. If that makes any sense. basically because he just, you know, was at a point in his life where I’m just gonna stay in college for nine years, I guess, and since like has gone on to have a really successful career and he’s got a kid and he’s married and he’s he’s doing what he should, but it took him a minute, right? Yeah. You know what I mean? You would have called him the number one recruit. Yeah. He was fivear like he had universities banging down his door. You know what I mean? He would have been the number one recruit. Who’s to say? And it’s I don’t know. Not not to dwell on this, but I do think it’s somewhat unfair to Isaiah Collier because he’s got he’s got a long way to go before he can really make an impact player in the NBA. And it’s it’s tough to not see progress in summer league. But I just wonder when we can just get rid of the he was the top recruit in high school. I don’t care. I can tell you the Jazz don’t care. Yeah. Not now. No. No. They don’t care at all. In fact, he needs to get rid of that out of his own brain. Hopefully, he does. Yeah. Or has. All right. Top three stories of the day at kslsports.com. Coming up next, Jake and Ben, 975, the KSL Sports Zone. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present This is JJ and Alex. It’s official. Jake Gretz himself putting it out there on social media. I think it’s too late. Now, could he find a place where he could eventually play during the season? Sure. I sit on this show, he’ll never play at BYU again. He’ll never play another down at BYU. All the baggage that’s now been created around this, it’s the smart thing for him to just move on. And it’s best for BYU for him to move on. And now they can go all in. Okay. Oh, McKay’s our guy. Oh, Trac’s our guy. Oh, it’s time. It’s bear time. You start trying to figure out who your guy is. They can move on now and he can move on. This is the top three stories of the day on kslsports.com. 975 the KSL Sports Zone Zone. Jacob Ben 975 the KSL Sports Zone. Today is Thursday, Ben, which would make tomorrow Friday, a free ticket Friday. Win big uh this Friday with tickets to Dirks Bentley and the Broken Branches tour coming uh to the Utah First Credit Union AMP Theater on July 31st. Get your tickets now at livenation.com or listen to the KSL Sports Zone all day on uh Friday tomorrow for your chance to win. Let me ask you this real quick before we get to uh top three stories. Ben, uh I’m not in I’m not into wrestling, so you’re going to have to help me with this. I Christian, I don’t know. You’re a wrestling guy. Why are you looking at me? Like real wrestling or WWE? No. WWE? No. No. Uh, wasn’t there different nights of WWE and it turned into like a competitive Monday Night Raw and then Yeah, Smackdown was one of the days or maybe that was one of the brands. I don’t know. But that that’s a thing, right? Okay. Do you think Win Ticket Wednesday and free ticket Friday are going to be like that? Like that where it’s going to be like kind of a competition for what’s better? Because this week, what what do we have? We had the Offspring versus Dirks Bentley. That’s pretty good. Don’t forget Jimmy Eats World and uh New Found Glory, right? Yeah. Like, yeah, that’s a pretty good showdown right there of of good tickets. You know what I mean? Yeah. I think we could build this into a bit like Friday’s got to outdo Wednesday, you know what I mean? And sometimes that naturally happens. Christian’s had people call back and be like, “Can I actually have the tickets for the other thing that I just won?” It’s like, “No, unfortunately.” You win what you win. We’d love to. Okay. So, the win ticket Wednesday, which we gave away yesterday, was the offspring featuring Jimmy Eld glory. And by the way, that’s coming up uh September 6th. September 6th at uh Utah First Credit Union Amphitheater. Go to livenation.com. And then free tickets Friday is Dirks Bentley, two weeks from tonight. And that’s two weeks from tonight. Same location. And uh you can go to livenation.com. Let’s get some uh reaction from the listeners, maybe. Do you have a vote? Should we do the what’s this called? Uh on the app, the call-in feature. The callin on the app. Yeah, call in. Send us some call-ins. Are you on team Dirks or team Offspring? And why? Who’s opening for Dirks? Do we have that information? So, uh no, I don’t. because there’s a lot I mean there’s people are going to go to this show not just for the offspring that will go to see Jimmy in the middle as I like to call him or uh or Newfound Glory All right. Well, we can look it up. Yeah. Yeah. But maybe people can vote. Do a callin. Explain who is superior this week. Wednesday or Friday? Do you like free ticket Friday better or win ticket Wednesday? I guess I’m kind of an OG with win ticket Wednesday. Yeah, free ticket Friday’s fine. Fine. It’s got the alliteration thing. Yeah. I mean, Win Ticket Wednesday does too, I suppose. Yeah. All right. Uh, top three stories of the day. KSL sports.com. Brought to you by Jbrooks Jewelers. Two locations. Uh, again, I went back to the old read. Cherish your love with Jbrooks Jewelers. Explore their expertly crafted engagement rings made from the finest materials. J. Brooks Jewelers. But they do have two locations. Travers Mountain or uh Winchester Street. All right, Christian. Where do you want to start? I can get used to saying this, guys. Cody Williams led the Jazz to victory last night. 23 points. Probably should have had five or six assists, but you know, no one shoots well in summer league, which is why they’re not NBA players for the most part. Two rebounds, two steals. I really like the steals numbers. I think that’s been really impressive from Cody. He’s getting a lot of deflections and being tall and using your your length is a real a real positive on the court. Some guys are long and don’t use it. Cody actually does use it. Yeah, I I think so. And I think seeing him improve, you know, we were talking about Collier and not showing improvement on his shot. I think seeing Cody Williams improve and have a little more swag uh is uh a good sign certainly for him. But as usual, Christian totally buried the lead there. Why aren’t we more outraged that Flip isn’t going to play? Uh Flip has been shut down. I mean, that’s that’s outrageous. We’re tuning into Summer League. We want to see Flip. How dare they decide when they play their players and when they don’t? How dare they? You’re being a little facicious. Uh me flip had played for six games in summer league. And is six all of them? He’s going to be It’s not. And you know what? Credit Cody and Isaiah for playing all the summer league games so far. They played the first four. They played all three in Salt Lake as well. Uh and they’ve stayed healthy enough and they’re a little bit stronger than some of the rookies. So now those are real players right there. Real men. Uh, but I I’m just outraged at the team in general. I think I think Flip probably makes all Vegas team, unless they make you, you know, say, “Yeah, you got to play at least four games.” Um, but I think he’ll make the all Vegas summer league team, which good for Flip, well deserving. Still the leading scoreer in Las Vegas at 29.3 points per game. And the Jazz decided that they’d seen enough. I wonder if that was a carrot kind of thing, like, yeah, if you uh average 30 points a game, we’ll send you home. Yeah, you can have the rest of the week off. Yeah, sure. Knock yourself out. You average 30 point. All right. I wonder, honestly, and and I’m kind of joking, but I wonder what they really do to have these players like Flip in specific or Cody Williams or whatever. I I wonder what the marching orders are. I’d love to be a fly on that wall where they tell them what they need to work on in summer league and what they want to concentrate on and the goals they set for different players. Be really curious to be in those meetings. I bet it’s really interesting. There is stuff like that that goes on like, “Hey, yeah, you average 30 points a game, we’ll send you home like that.” Yeah, if you can do this. Sure. Yeah. I mean, they do it in practice all the time, right? You guys make x amount of free throws in a row, we won’t we won’t run or whatever. Honestly, I’m sure they set some sort of bar for Bryce in Salt Lake. Yeah, absolutely. You do this, you don’t have to play Wednesday. Absolutely. Yeah. He wasn’t ever going to play Vegas, but yeah, he only played the first two games and maybe they just said like, “If we see what we want to see, you get the you get the final day off.” So, I’m, you know, I I’d be curious to be privy to those conversations, but uh I’m I would guess Flip has accomplished his goal or whatever and now is off to wherever he decides to uh spend the rest of his off. And it may just be exactly that. Like, how much more do we need to see from you? How much more did you need to see from uh Kyle? It doesn’t mean he’s not doesn’t need to get better. Like, but is he going to turn into a defensive stalward overnight? Probably not. But offensively and what the team needed from him, he showed. So see if you can get some different looks and let some other guys play. Yeah. I think uh oftentimes it’s it’s not necessarily about what do you need to see, but what you know how much Let me put it this way and you you’ve said this like a team will wants you to play every game. The Jazz don’t want to send Flip home. That’s not something that they want. They want to see them play as much as poss as much experience as possible. work on as many things as possible. But much like you with your children’s bedtime, I’ll give you another half an hour. Yeah. Yeah. You brush your teeth. So I’ll give you another half an hour, you know. Exactly. 8:00 bedtime. So yeah, if if you’ve worked on what we told you to work on and we see I guess some something satisfactory, then we’ll give you the extra half hour before Yeah. bedtime. Yeah. Got to brush your teeth first though, Ben. You got to be right ready for bed. Then you can have that extra half hour. Next number two. Nothing is set in stone, but rumor has it Utah State could go interim athletic director by committee. Sounds like a good idea, save a little money. Um, I mean, look, you got to get your president in place. You want your president and your athletic director, I think, to be on the same page. And if you were to hire an athletic director before the president, well, the president probably wants to come in and bring in their own person. So I get that they will depends on what type of president but yeah but they will probably who was our guy that we had Casey Smurweight who was kind of talking about you know the orders of these now he was talking a little bit more of just strictly athletic departments but you know this is a business you’re running a big business now and you might have a business person leading the show and then you might have an athletic director serving as a deputy like uh Diana Sabo is now right now in Maryland who is actually doing most of the athletic director but working underneath somebody who has more of a business understanding and maybe the president you bring in has a little bit more of a business understanding and needs has specific needs for their athletic director to come in and fill in that role. Uh long way of saying I think this is the norm the natural order but interesting that the rumor out there is it could be Gary Anderson. That is interesting but I mean given his history and his relationship with the the people that make decisions up there in Logan maybe that shouldn’t be surprising. I don’t know. This comes from Mark Mark Whitman Mike Whitman, sorry, on Twitter. Mike, SBN. Yeah. He says, “USU AD search sources indicate there’s a growing consensus that they will spread responsibilities out in the uh in the interim. It appears both Randy Spman and former head coach Gary Anderson will play a role. The the reason that you’re the the take about a president, it it could be true. It could be in in various degrees why I’m bringing up nuance is like what kind of president is Utah State hiring? Because if they hire Utah hired Taylor uh why am I why do we uh anyway they hired their president from their business school. He was the head of the business school. The business school had done a ton of growth and then Randall Taylor Rand thank you. So they hire him. He happens to kind of like sports, so he’s kind of involved, but it’s not like he was coming into the job with an athletic director in his nor should that be what you hire a president to do. It’s why the marriage between academics and sports really is clunky, like clunky and a very awkward one. Cuz if you’re hiring the head of the English lit department, he or she probably isn’t thinking, well, I just had cocktails with the associate AD at Ohio State. You know what I mean? So Gary would be interesting because that’s a really internal hire which I actually think could benefit Utah State and uh you know maybe Jerry wasn’t the right guy or didn’t turn out to be the right guy or I don’t know. I don’t want to weigh in on pending litigation even though I do very much like Jerry. The idea of hiring somebody local I think is a good one for Utah State because frankly I don’t think it’s a very good job. And here’s where I will disagree with our friend uh Casey Smurweight where he described why Utah State was such a good job. I I don’t necessarily agree with that take. They’re not going to have a ton of dough. They lose coaches like crazy. Yeah, Logan is a college town that’s far away. Uh it is extraordinarily cold in Logan in the wintertime. I mean, I just don’t know if the Utah State job is really that great. They’ve had a lot of controversy. It’s a springboard job. Unfortunately, if you go in and you succeed, you get a different job. But see, if you hire a local guy, it’s not a springboard job. Like Utah hiring Kyle Kyle Whittingham. Utah hasn’t been a springboard job for Kyle because they hired a local guy. Correct. Utah was a springboard job. Urban Meyer used it as a spring You’re right. You’re right. He did. Utah hires internally. Remember Kyle was up for it the first time and they decided to go external and hire the hot young whatever coach which worked out fine. It did. But it was a springboard. He was here for two years and then he was out. Yeah. They hire internally. I mean you’ve heard the rumors like I have. He could have gone to Tennessee. He could have gone here. He could he could have gone there but he didn’t. Why not? He gets it here. He likes it here. His way of management works specifically at Utah and it works extremely well. He knows the culture. He knows all of that stuff that makes this a unique place. I think Utah State could benefit from some of that is as their athletic director. Okay. Yeah, I would listen to that. So, I don’t know. I personally like Gary Anderson, too. You know, he may be the the uh right man for the job. Maybe not. But I do like that line of thinking. If only someone named Jerry Boie was around. Well, that’s not happening because they’re currently embroiled in litigation. So, but right, isn’t that the person? We state, Utah State, local ties. Yes. Yeah, absolutely. But I mean, when you get Title N involved, it makes it so delicate. And listen, I vouch for Jerry as much as possible. But when that sort of thing gets in and mismanagement of this stuff, I it just really murkies the water. I don’t think Jerry really had anything to do with any of it. I don’t think so either. But I don’t know. I wasn’t there and frankly I don’t think we’ve seen the end of that story so I’m not prepared to comment all that much but it’s the reason I like Jerry as a candidate in the first place. Yes, there are local people at our schools that have local ties at BYU, Utah, Weber State, Snow, SU, whatever. If you wanted to bring somebody up who has ties locally, you probably could hire the guy uh Chris Hill’s right-hand man that Utah passed on. I don’t remember that guy’s name at the moment, who just didn’t get the job when Brian Santiago got the job. Oh, yeah. Could uh could Chad Lewis go to Logan? Yeah, probably wanted the job. He would get it. Yeah, they hired a former BYU guy in Bronco. So, you know, I that is a nice thing. Broncos going to be in good shape. I don’t know. Sometimes an outsider is just what the doctor ordered. Sometimes a good oldfashioned internal hire is just what the doctor ordered. I think Utah State after seeing what’s happened to their coaches too where they they hire all these outsiders and they’re gone in 30 seconds. You know, Bronco is kind of an internal hire. Honestly, there’s a good chance Bronco is not using Utah State as a spring. I don’t think he is. All right, what’s next? Number three, Kehani Sitake wants a supercharged non-conference schedule. Uh, according to Mitch Harper, kslports.com, this was Kehani’s idea uh when talking about non-conference scheduling. He says as we think about the uh selection process for the college football playoff and the metrics are going to be uh used to be moving forward and how those metrics are weighted I think the strength of schedule is really going to matter and then or excuse me that was Brett your mark but then Colani went on to say why don’t we just schedule one team from all the other schools or all the other conferences the power conferences play at three non-conference games play an ACC team an SEC team and a Big 10 team and everyone has to play those across college football and uh you move forward I would love that don’t think It’s realistic. And then again, one of the problems is some conferences play nine games, some play eight. You would love that. I would love that. Maybe even Colani, like his inner football fan, would love that. But from his perspective, that is a terrible idea. And it is not true that the playoff committee is taking into weight non-conference hardly at all. And it really doesn’t matter for BYU who’s going to get left out. You don’t think they care about non-conference at all possible. All right, Ben. BYU literally beat SMU on the field. Literally beat SMU. Who did the playoff committee pick? Not BYU. Not just not BYU. No. Answer the question. Who did SMU? Actively SMU. What? SMU. So, no. The number one number that that committee is going to consider because they are cowardly is your amount of losses. That’s it. They’re not going to look into it. It’s not going to be nuanced, nothing. They’re going to draw the line at two or three losses. And you know what? They’re going to pick the more popular school of the ties. Yeah. Whatever the better story is or whatever. And historically, BYU gets the shaft almost every time. So, I don’t agree with Colani. He could play the toughest non-conference in the country. And it would not matter. Yeah. As much as having a one loss or two loss. He He should schedule no one. The only way they’ll be forced to take BYU is if they’re undefeated or win the league or have one loss. You’re right. And you win the league, it doesn’t matter what you did non-conference, right? Because it’s only league play. Exactly. Yeah. Or you’re undefeated. Why would you play anybody in the non-conference? He should do the opposite of what he’s talking about. Portland State three times. Absolutely. Four times if you can get it down to eight games in in conference. Yeah. All right. Now I’ve listened to you. All right. Stay tuned. Uh we’ve got uh we’ve got Brian today, right? BT joining us coming up next. We’ll talk open championship. Stay tuned. Jake and Ben 975 the KSL Sports Zone. This is Holen and Scotty J. You don’t need to get an associate AD from Florida State University who’s got no ties to the community, but oh hey, he raised this much money at Florida State because he’s going to come in thinking he’s got a Florida State budget. Guess what? We’ve met a lot of P5 athletic directors and a lot of them are duds. Yeah. They don’t need some dude from a big school who’s got this crazy resume because he’s going to come in and think that he’s got to run it like Ohio State or he’s got to run it like Florida State or he’s got to run it like Michigan, but he doesn’t have that money. So, he doesn’t know how to adapt. He doesn’t know how to stretch a dollar. He doesn’t know how to do all these things because he’s just used to throwing money at problems. Well, you can’t do that at Utah State. You’ve done that now. It’s not working. Catch Hans and Scotty weekdays from noon to 3 on 975 the KSL Sports Zone. So, so who’s got it better than us? Your home for the best sports coverage in Utah. You’re listening to Jake Scott and Ben Anderson on 975 KSL Sports Zone. Jake and Ben, it’s time to talk a little more softly because it’s time to talk golf. Ben, hit it. Christian, this Open Championship update is brought to you by Mountainland Supply, Zans Bank, Black Desert Resort, Hoops Vision, and Sig Freed and Jensen. And now, Real Golf Radio’s Brian Taylor. BT’s appearance also brought to you by Mountain America Credit Union. What’s going on, Brian? Hey, uh, here we go. Huh? We’re off and running. Uh, some good scores early. Nothing unbelievable, but a lot of four under, a lot of three under, a lot of people under par in general. What, uh, what have you noticed in the opening round? Yeah, I mean, you know, it’s it’s one of these things that you you’ve seen Hang on a second. I got to take this off of there. Does that sound better? Like I was getting a weird echo there. Sorry about that. No problem. Um, it it started out it started out kind of boring. I mean, I I woke up Well, first of all, let me just say this. I woke up at 3:00 this morning and I checked the leaderboard and Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood were leading and I just went back to sleep. I’m like, “No, we’re not doing this.” I’m like, “This.” So, uh, watched Scotty Sheffler hit his first T-shot and, um, and then, you know, got up a couple hours later and it just felt like, you know, the the weather came in and it was it’s one of those opens where surprise you’re watching, you know, through raindrops on a camera lens and it’s blowing and umbrellas are up and it’s just kind of it almost feels like it takes a while to to kind of get off the out of the starting blocks a little bit. Guys are just kind of hanging on. Nobody’s really doing anything exciting. Um, and so it just felt like it was kind of a bit of a slow start, a little bit of a slog fest. And now this afternoon I feel like it’s starting to pick up just a little bit. Uh, I talk afternoon, uh, Scottish time. You know, the the weather’s cooperating a little bit. It just feels I don’t know. You guys tell me. It feels more It’s more fun. It’s It feels more engaging when the guys can actually manufacture shots instead of just trying to hang on to their umbrellas that are about to blow inside out. You know what I mean? Yeah. It’s the same reason I don’t like the US Open. I want to see birdies, not bogeies. uh you know, I want to see those the best in the world going out there and uh and and making shots. So, what’s your your best guess then, BT, at what it’s going to take uh to win this thing? I mean, are we going to consistently see 67s? Is it going to get harder from here or what? Yeah, I mean, I think 12, was it 12 or 15 won last time? That’s pretty that’s pretty normal for an open, you know, 12 to 15 under. You’ll see the occasional when they go to St. Andrews, they’ll get it to 20 under just because that golf course if the weather’s not ridiculous, it just doesn’t have a lot of defense for today’s game. But, um, yeah, it’s I I would expect, you know, guys are going to get into that double digits. You know, the weather’s supposed to be pretty much how it was today. You know, these little storms kind of coming in, rain, some wind, and then goes away. So, you know, we talked about this, I think, before, but you look at the luck of the draw in some cases. You know, it looks like late early might end up being the best of the two draws. And that that happens, right? I mean, these guys are teeing off right now. They’re not dealing with the rain. The guys dealt with the rain earlier today and they might come back out tomorrow afternoon and have the rain again. So, um you you just never know. But I I suspect they’re going to get into that 15 to, you know, 12 to 15 number. that the what’s interesting too, Bob and I were talking about this earlier this morning, is you look at Lynx Golf and you always have those big pot bunkers and you always have the wind and the weather, but like Port Rush is almost like added elements of, you know, bigger hills and and elevations and this really like gnarly rough that’s all around it. It just is almost like take Scottish links and add a little extra oomph to it and you get Irish links. Uh, I’m sure everybody saw ghosts of of tournaments past when Rory bogeied the first hole, but he’s bounced back. Yeah, and that was big, right? I mean, watching him hit that first T- shot and he pulled it a little bit, it’s like, okay, we can see the ball, so this is going to be better than it went uh for him six years ago. But yeah, I mean, that’s a big story what Rory’s doing right now and and can, you know, what can he do? He seems pretty controlled. I’ve watched most of his shots and, you know, he’s he’s he’s in seems to be in good form. not he’s not tearing it up, but he he seems like he’s steadying himself. Does that make sense? Like it feels like he’s he’s just kind of like, “Okay, let’s get through this.” Almost felt a little nervy, you know, which is unusual for a guy that uh with his resume, but we know how much this means to you. And that’s really when nerves kick in is when it means something. That’s when nerves happen, right? I mean, obviously it meant history when he wanted Augusta to join the Grand Slam Club, but you know, here this might be his best chance. well, is his best chance to win an open championship in his home country. And so, yeah, it means a lot. And so, the nerves are there. Scotty Shuffler, same thing. I thought Scotty uh not same thing as far as nerves, but as far as good play, I thought Scotty played really well this morning. Uh saw much of his round. He didn’t drive it like he needs to. He only hit a um you know, I think he was off in the hay quite a bit, only hit which resulted in only hitting 11 greens, but he was able to get it up and down. Only had the two bogeies, five birdies. when he did hit the green, he was inside of 10 feet, you know, with four birdie looks there and um and stayed out of all the bunkers as well. So, Scotty Shuffer there at three underers a pretty good mark to keep an eye on as well. BT, you know me, most people like to look at the top of the leaderboard. I enjoy looking at the bottom. And I got to say, it does my heart good to see Patrick Reed put up a 77. It couldn’t happen to a better guy. You’re not not a big Patrick Reed fan, are you? Who is? That’s true. That’s true. I just was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt. So, yeah, I don’t uh I’m not a Patrick Reed fan. I mean, the guy the guy seems to work really hard at being unlikable and and that’s tough, right? It’s pretty easy to be unlikable without working hard in today’s social media world, but he actually goes out of his way to be unlikable. So, anyway, yeah, I’m with you on that one. Spe at plus four, Kepka plus four. I mean, these these uh that those are rough days. I mean, they say you can’t win it on the first day, but uh did are those guys losing it? Yeah. I mean, it’s not good, right? I mean, I’m surprised I’m not surprised that Kepka, he hasn’t had his best stuff this year, but Jordan Speed is he’s I I pointed this out with JJ and Alex the other day. He’s 11 for 11 in cuts made in the open. And since he won Jordan Speed since he won back in 2017, he’s had three top 10s and hasn’t finished worse than 25th. So, I’m looking at that going, okay, one of his biggest things is kind of a little bit of a he, you know, he gets it driving. He drives it a little sideways and sometimes the putter doesn’t cooperate, but it feels like he’s trending back. And so, I thought, well, these stats here, maybe he’s maybe it’s just quirky enough over at Lynx Golf that it would kind of distract Jordan enough to allow him to kind of get it around. And I just sort of expected Jordan to have a week. So that that’s probably the biggest surprise. Brooks, like I said, hasn’t had his best stuff, but I’m surprised that speed’s where he’s at. I don’t think four overs out of it entirely, but he does need to kind of put on the gas a little bit in round two. BT, you’re the best. Thank you very much. And uh we look forward to hearing you asleep. 3:00 a.m. throughout this tournament. Stay asleep. No, you got to adjust your schedule. I get a little loopy. BT’s a pro. You gota Real Radio is dialed in, man. BT is all over this thing. getting up at 3:00 a.m. Are you kidding? He’s been doing uh the, you know, Saturday morning 6:00 a.m. forever. Yeah. All that we Yeah, we, as you know, we do roll that on Friday nights now, which is nice. I get my Saturday morning. Hey, hey, hey, hey, BT. Don’t Whoa. Don’t want to Don’t want to pull the curtain. Don’t ruin the curtain, BT. What are you doing? Yeah, we recorded this for 20 years, though. 20 years of the 6 a.m. was a lot. That’s That’s true. Hey, real quick. Got to drop a little Tony note. He did just make a birdie on the seventh hole. So, he’s made seven pars and a birdie sits one under par. So, great. Go T. Uh, thank you, BT. You got it, boys. See you, buddy. All right, there you go. Uh, our friend Brian Taylor weighing in on the Open Championship. I I about made a a bad joke about Patrick Reed, but like he’s very unlikable. Have you followed his story? I haven’t. No, I don’t. Well, you should you should look into it. Like throwdowns on the Ryder Cup type of stuff. Okay. Yeah. Yeah, nobody likes that guy. Uh, all right. Stay tuned. We’ll have more Jacob, we’ll have more Jacob Ben coming up, including we do have a bozo of the week nominee that we have to not sports related, but be great. It totally qualifies. Yeah, it does. Stay tuned. Jake and Ben 975 DKSL Sports Zone. The sports you love, the teams you can’t live without. You have sense of urgency. This is Jake Scott and Ben Anderson on 975 the KSL Sports Zone. It sounds delicious. Yeah, it always sounds good. Right about lunchtime. It’s a tough time for us to do that read. It’s a tough time for us. Feel bad for us. We are the We are the uh the real victims here. Ben, talk about all the food hands and Scotty get to celebrate. The worst part of our job by far. I heard you and uh David James breaking down the uh the Bradley Beal move, Ben. And boy, what a what a like an earthquake in the NBA. I mean, it’s now the Clippers and everybody else. I know. Uh, is or are I shouldn’t say is, sorry. Are the big moves are there big moves coming? I don’t think LeBron’s going to get traded, so no. The wind is blowing like they’re going to make him come back and just play a year. Play a year, be good, and then do whatever he wants to next year. I would guess the market for LeBron isn’t terrific. I just it’s hard to trade $50 million. It is. It’s just really hard to trade that teams over the aprons can’t send out two players to get one player back. Check this Christian. We said now that old Bradley is not the old maid anymore. Is it now LeBron? LeBron. Is LeBron the old maid? At least he’s expiring and that makes it hard to be an old maid when you only have one year left on your deal. You still have to match that dough. But you do have to match the dough. And the Lakers clearly are not looking at LeBron as a player that they are highly invested in being their best player. Like you’re gonna have to take back an overpaid bozo to move off LeBron. Mhm. LeBron should just agree to a buyout. Well, LeBron would love a buyout. I doubt it. I don’t think he wants that. I I think his ego is to That’s true. That was one of the other reports was that LeBron doesn’t want to get traded if it’s not for a huge hall because he doesn’t want to be the guy who was traded for nothing. He doesn’t want his picture up online after losses. Yeah. Like what a That’s real fragility. Yeah. Yeah. That’s insane. But hilarious. Yeah. He would want the right team to send the right package back for No, I’ll cut my nose off. Yeah. Exactly right. So, and he he loves LA. He doesn’t love the Lakers. He wants to be in LA. His failing media thing is there. I don’t get the impression Giannis is getting traded. Kevin Durant’s already moved. In fact, Zack Low, credit Zach Low, does an excellent job with this podcast is kind of shifted back to he thinks Lowry Markin is probably the biggest trade name again all of a sudden that Markin’s back as the in the capird seat as the biggest name which Danny A and Austin I should start I should flip that around Austin and Danny A probably love that it’s had good spot to be in have the best player available. What about somebody like uh Joel Embiid? He’s better than Lowry. I would love to go look at his games play. He’s just as it’s just I’ve never bet on him being healthy ever. But the smart thing to do for the 76ers is to trade him. It is. Now their owner is the king of all bo or not their owner. Their GM is the king of all bozos. Their owner isn’t great either. Although as David pointed out and you guys talked about earlier, he seems to do be doing okay with the commies. But I don’t, you know, Daryl my Elton Brand should trade Joel Embiid. Yeah. And they should use Paul, use Joel Embiid to get them off of Paul George and then rebuild around Tyrese Maxi and VJ Edgecom. That’s a good head start on a rebuild. It is. And then whatever you get for Embiid, which if you have to attach Paul George, I mean, that’s a lot of money. Maybe you couldn’t do that, but you know, find out what you can get for Embiid and kick it into the next generation, which I still think there would be teams that would give up something for Embiid. Absolutely. There would be teams. He’s he’s always hurt, but when he’s at his best, he’s one of the three best players in the league. An all NBA guy. Yeah, the 76ers are in a funny spot. I think they’re going to be hamstrung, no pun intended, by the East being perceived as being wide open because as disastrous as their last year was and as bad as this Paul George situation is going and as bad again because he’s had knee surgery in the offseason, you can sell yourself on if we’re healthy, we’re as good as anybody in the East next year. Boston’s out of the picture. Nobody’s afraid of Cleveland. You’re probably better than Orlando. They don’t have an answer for Joel. Certainly, you’ve got this young great guard lineup like you mentioned with VJ coming in. You could buy the idea that you could get back to the finals next year, but Joel Embiid plays 19 games a year or 39 games a year or 60 games a year or 50 games a year. He certainly doesn’t play 70 and he never plays at the right time. Um, yeah, and Daryl thought he could trade for Rusty Westbrook and beat the Warriors. I mean I mean yeah it’s tempting to look at that but does that make it the right I would argue that that doesn’t make it the right move. I mean that makes it the easy move if anything. Exactly right. And teams do the easy thing more often than not. Absolutely true. Almost exclusively teams do the easy thing. The Jazz talked themselves into that they were a Mike Connley hamstring away from a title. That if Mike Connley had stayed healthy in that series against the Clippers then they would have been NBA champ that. Now, I’m not directly quoting anyone, but that they had a real shot at it. I don’t think that was ever true. Agreed. You know, but it’s easy to tell yourself that. It’s easy to tell yourself, well, the East is wide open and we have Maxi and we have Embiid. We’re as good as anybody out there. I don’t know. By the way, interesting along those lines, Donovan Mitchell’s always hurt at the end of the season, right? Her ankle injuries hurt last year, was hurt two years ago. Yeah, little guys get hurt, but guys who get hurt always get hurt. Or is it a LeBron thing where where you’re hurt when you come up short? Maybe that’s it. And everybody’s a little bit beat up at the end of the season, so it’s easy to just What was LeBron’s thing last year where right after the season there was like video of him playing and then the next time he made a public appearance, he was in a casting. It was a knee or something. Knee? Yeah. Random knee injury. They almost had to amputate his leg. Yeah. Uh, Donovan. So, no, I’m with you. The the 76ers should get off of Joel while they can, while there’s value there. While there’s value, if he has another season where he plays 19 games or 20 games or 40 games, the value is going to disappear and they’re not going to be able to move off them. Yeah. How many more games, you know, does he have? Like Kawhi Leonard’s value isn’t nearly what it used to be, you know? Right. And Joel’s already 30. So how much money does he have left? That’s why I’m saying they should move him now. No, I’m with you. But they’re not going to do it. Yes, they’re gonna And they have $180 million left on his contract. Last last September, he signed a three-year $193 million extension. Yeah, move it now. I don’t know. You guys are Are you trying to talk me into it? No, I’m I’m I’m with you. I I totally agree with you. You have good young pieces. You could get a lot for Joel. You might just have to eat the Paul George contract for a little bit. Or maybe you get enough back for Joel, you can include some of that to get off of Paul and then you’re just moving forward with your young core. But because Tyrese Maxi is an all-star, maybe better if he keeps getting Jeremy McCain’s really good. I think VJ has a chance to be really good. Yeah. But it’s hard to replace Joel. It’s hard to find a guy who’s that good. So I I get the fear. But are there any other candidates we’re ignoring the Jaylen Brown stuff? obviously died off after uh draft day. You’re talking about biggest names to be traded. Are there big No. Are there big moves? We could talk about old maids, too, but are there big moves still out there this year? No, I think most of the moves have been done. I I would imagine. Now, you know, Luca got traded out of nowhere. So, I guess it’s possible. But if I’m Jaylen Brown, I’m demanding a trade. Why do you want to be out? Uh because next year is going to suck. And then even if they’re good in two years, all the credit’s going to go to Jason Tatum. It will go back to Jason. Yeah, they might be better than people think next year. But maybe I mean they got rid of Drew Holidayiday and they got rid of Chris Porzingis and they’re not going to have Jason Tatum. So yeah, maybe they just aren’t going to be very good. Yeah, I don’t think they’re planning on it. Yeah. And yeah, they might want a good lottery pick. So he’s going to slog out a season and then Jason Tatum’s going to come back and they’re going to be good again and all the credit’s going to go to Jason Tatum. Go to my own team, man. No, I’m looking around. I I think everyone’s done. Nuggets have made their big move. Unless the Knicks get LeBron, they’re not making a move. Rockets have made their big move. Celtics have made their big moves. The Knicks should get LeBron. That’s the most Knicks thing of all time. Yeah, LeBron for Cat. It’s kind of the only deal that makes sense. LeBron could say, “Hey, he traded me for an all-star in his prime. I’ll sign off on that. I’ll wave my no trade clause for that. And I get to go play in New York, and Cat can go watch Luca.” And can go be a big guy next to Luca. And Cat would make Luca look good. Luca would make Cat look good. Excuse me, at least offensively, but that would be one of the worst defensive teams in the league. It would be rough. Yeah, be rough. So, I I just don’t think Yeah, I don’t think there’s a lot of big moves left. Warriors, I guess, could potentially try and get in on something, but I don’t know where the Warriors are going. Yeah, they’re just old. It’s hard to be old. It is, but they’re in their weird spot where uh they should move off of Steph Curry, maybe. I don’t know. It’s th this is what sports franchises have been dealing with since the dawn of time, right? You know, how much does loyalty matter? How long do you continue to invest resources in an aging product? And how far does that product fall? I mean, that’s the conversation with LeBron, right? Like, how much worse is he than he used to be? And is how good he is now worth $56 million? That’s that’s hard. I mean, Larry Miller offered Carl Malone like $25 million to come back to Utah, and Carl ended up taking way less. Yeah. The veteran minimum and going to the Lakers. So, Carl himself made that decision, which is not usually the case. Usually, it’s the franchise. The Bulls ended up moving off of Scottie Pippen. That’s what that whole Last Dance documentary is about. Yeah. So, when do you make the decision to pull the trigger? When do you know it’s the last dance? And do you turn the page to your future? Um, Jaylen Green could get moved potentially in Phoenix. Jonathan Kaminga, they’ve got to figure out what they’re going to do in Golden State. I don’t think I’d touch either one of those players if I were another NBA team. But maybe they can talk somebody into it. Yeah, if I was a Brooklyn young and had money, I would take on one of those guys. Give him a chance. Which one? Either in all honesty, I’m underpaying for them at this point. Then if you’re Phoenix, why not keep Jaylen Green? They just still have a lot of guards, though. They did just get off Bradley Beal, but I might try and get assets for him to rebuild. I just don’t think Jaylen Green’s a part of my future if I’m Phoenix. So, I’m using that to turn him into something else that makes sense next to Devin Booker ideally. Do you think the Jazz are done? Yes. Not going to move off Nerk, huh? No, I think Nerk’s going to be the backup center or Lowry. I don’t think Lowry’s getting traded before the season. I think the Jazz need and want somebody to carry a big offensive load. So I think Lowry comes in and scores 20 points a game and takes 15 shots and just provides structure and there’s value to that and then you rebuild his you rebuild his trade value when he gets traded in season or next summer. But you know that was kind of the concept this year was you couldn’t trade him during at the trade deadline because he had signed his contract when he did. So you literally just couldn’t trade him in February. So, you had to wait to the offseason, but his value was not shot, but certainly lowered. Have the Jazz officially bought out Kevin Love? I don’t know if they’re going to. Just keep the old man, huh? I think there’s a team that might convince themselves that he’s worth a second round pick and the Jazz would probably love to get another second round pick back, but he’s not hurting you. You’ve already paid X amount of dollars to make Jordan Clarkson not go away, but buy him out. Yeah. So, might keep old Kev. Doesn’t hurt to have Kevin. He doesn’t help you win too much, huh? No. Well, what about taking away the minutes from the young guys, Ben? I mean, it’s 23 games he played last year. People have been clutching their pearls about less. Um, and you know, Kevin Love missed games last year because his dad died and he wouldn’t spend time with his dad. But no, I I would imagine that I mean I I don’t expect Kevin Love to be on the roster next year, but I from what I’ve heard is that’s kind of up in the air. It’s not like a guarantee that they’re going to one way or another he’s going to be gone. They don’t need to buy him out immediately. There’s not a And I think they could do him a favor though. Go help a team. They could. But how much are they getting a lot of money back? You know, are they getting you know, Jordan gave Jordan Clarkson gave $3.6 $6 million back, which is what uh Kevin Love would be able to sign for on a minimum. And he I think he’s owed4 million right now. So yeah, if the Jazz could buy him out for $400,000 or whatever that difference is, they might be willing to do it. You really think the Jazz are nickel and diamond buyouts? No reason to pay extra money. You don’t have to. Yeah. I mean, yeah. I mean, Milwaukee just laid out how much to to buy out Damen Lillard. And in the past when they bought out Rusty, I mean, they bought out Rusty for a lot. They did. They also got assets for him to do that, you know. And when they bought out Rusty the second time via the Clippers, the Clippers paid almost his whole contract on the way out the door in cash because he was making less. But you’re right, when they bought out Russell Westbrook after the Mike Connley trade, it was like huge. It was a huge amount of money. It was it was the end of his supermax deal. Yeah. So, and it was, you know, it was the last half season of it, but still it was a big it was a big contract, but no, I the the relevant point if they think you can get a second round pick, I suppose that makes some sense. I I’ve just been expecting the buyout news for weeks now and it hasn’t come. But, you know, there are so it might take the domino falling of what happens with Al Horford might be what I look for there is Al Horford is probably leaving the Celtics because as we just mentioned, they’re probably not going to be very good next year and he wants to compete. And the strong belief is that he’s going to go to the Warriors. But if let’s say Warriors don’t get him, will they say, “Well, we can shift.” And certainly Kevin Love is no longer as good as Al Horford is, but Kevin Love is a big guy who can probably give you a couple of minutes a night in the playoffs if he had to and knows how to play. You might be able to get some value from or the Lakers might be willing to trade for him or, you know, something like that where you could, not that they have any draft picks, but you might be able to get something for him. tht or something. Yeah. So, just giving him four million. Where is hot dog these these days? Still in Chicago. I think he got a new deal in Chicago. Am I right on that? Of course. I bet Ryan Dorf loves him. But maybe he’s just restricted or unrestricted. He’s on a partially guaranteed contract. Ah, there it is. So, he will compete for a roster spot. Good for him. Good luck. Uh, stay tuned. We’ll have more uh coming up next. We’ll That might have even just been last year. I don’t know. I don’t know if he’s gonna be back. Um, coming up next, we do have a nominee for bozo of the week. This is our first nominee this week. So, this might clear the decks because it’s pretty good. So, stay tuned. It’s Jake and Ben 975, the KSL Sports Zone. This is DJ and PK. Here we go again. Joined now by Brettia. Pick six previews. Where did you have BYU when you thought Rhettzoff was going to be the quarterback? And how far did you drop them once you realized, okay, they’re going to be breaking in a new starter here? I had him as a fringe top 25 team in that 25 to 30 range. And then when the quarterback uncertainties came about that really shook up the room and the offense now you’re turning to two former nonQ guys and Bachmire, who I think might end up winning the job. I think he’s got the highest ceiling and he was getting some first team reps at Stanford before he transferred. So I’d probably go with him. But you’re still talking about an 18-year-old true freshman. That’s such a tough ask, especially without a spring ball or a winter conditioning. He’s coming in with really six weeks till he’ll kick off. That worried me. I got them right around 40th, but a little bit lower than I expected. Catch DJ and PK mornings from 6 to 10. You may be asking yourself, why are they playing Coldplay? Is Hans Olsson in the studio? What’s going on? H’s notoriously a huge Coldplay fan. No, that is not why we’re playing. Loves Cold Play. That is not why we’re playing Coldplay. It is because Coldplay is loosely involved with our nominee for Bozo of the Week and it’s the greatest scandal going on right now. It is. Yeah. And I haven’t heard the sound yet, so I’m kind of excited to hear the sound. I have seen the video. I have yet to hear the sound. So, we will we will play said sound for you coming up here in a minute. Yeah. Uh, how much setup do we want to give? Do we want to play the sound and then give the setup or We need a little setup. All right. This is at a Coldplay concert in New York. I think is that where it was? Uh, and during some reason I thought Boston, but I know this these people are based in New York. So, anyways, during the uh during the concert, they put up on the screen like a kiss cam that you see at the sporting events and uh they show this couple that is dancing intimately. I don’t know how would you describe that. I mean, he this man is doing the classic thing you do with your girlfriend at a concert. He’s standing behind her with his arms around her. I’m sure he’s doing the really awkward thing of like singing the lyrics into her ear. Oh, yeah. But like he it’s the very classic move, right? Like and you can tell they’ve got like a box like they’re in a suite or something. They’re up at the top, but not bad seats, like elite seats. Now, when the cam hits him, he dives out of the shot. Just goes low and gets behind like the seat in front of him or something. The woman immediately covers her face. immediately covers her face and turns around and yeah, he dives like he dropped a bag of nickels underneath the seat in front of him. Like he goes for it immediately to get off of the screen and then and here’s where there is a little backstory needed. A it stays filming them forever. It doesn’t cut away at all. Uh-huh. But more importantly, Chris Martin, the lead singer of the of Coldplay, is giving playbyplay of what’s going on. This isn’t, oh, they’re at a, you know, outfit change or it’s before the encore and they’re just doing this to keep it alive. No, he’s out there. Chris Martin is talking through the fans on the Kiss Cam, which I’ve never heard of. All right, let’s let’s play it and then we can we can explain the fallout. Yeah. Oh, look at these two. All right, come on. You okay? Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy. Well, it turns out Well, Chris, as a matter of fact, they are having an affair. It certainly seems like they’re having an affair. it and it took the uh I guess internet uh seconds to figure out that this is the CEO of a company called Astronomer by it’s astronomer. Oh yeah, that probably is astronomer. Uh I thought it was one of those like creative tech names. Uh that’s funny. Uh CEO Andy Byron. Yeah. Uh, and the gal was a gal by the name of Chris. Uh, Kristen Kabo, I’m assuming. Kat or Kabo. Her name’s not her last name is not Byron. Uh, no. Andy, not his wife. No. No. Her her last name is Kabo or Kabat. C A B O T. And she happens to be the chief people officer for Astronomer. Yes. That is That is 1,000% correct. And can you give me a layman’s term for what chief chief people officer is? Oh, she’s the head of HR. She’s the head of HR. She is the head of HR. Okay, this gets really complicated quickly because they call them seuite executives, right? The C literally just means chief, right? Isn’t that what that means? Am I wrong on that? That’s where the C comes from. So, why wouldn’t you just be head of HR, which is what every company has? Why would they make you a chief of something? Seems like maybe you were in favor of somebody, maybe somebody at the top where they elevated you out of the position that every other company has and says, “No, you’re seuite. You’re a chief of something. You’re not head of HR. We’re going to make you the chief people officer.” Which, by the way, is more common in tech than you’re alluding to. My wife’s company has a chief people officer. Yeah. Well, that’s bizarre, but okay. Uh, I’m pretty sure Ryan Smith Entertainment Group has the chief people officer. But regardless, the sea suite are not supposed to be intermingling like this. It’s not a good look. It’s not a good look. No. And the HR person in particular, more than anybody else, the CEO and the HR person, more than anybody else, not like it’s a secretary, should not be co-mingling. It’s not the secretary and you know the sales guy. Yeah. It’s not Pam and Jim from the office. This is the head of the company and the head of the person who makes all the hiring decisions in the company and the one who is chosen to enforce policies like sexual harassment and correct those sorts of things that plague workplaces around the world. Yeah. That person, you know, that’s like your accountant stealing from you. You know what I mean? Yes. But uh immediately everyone recognized this is a full-blown affair. He’s a billionaire apparently, which is why everyone recognized which is why he’s going to have a costly divorce. Why he got recognized immediately and then yes, you hope that that was a prenup. But look, a lot of things could have been avoided here. First of all, you can go to concerts. You can go to concerts with people you work with. You can go to concerts with people you’re having an affair with at work. don’t stand right next to each other. Even Rich Rodriguez figured out put the girlfriend and the wife on other sides of the field. He did figure that out. He figured that out. Then during the kiss cam when they’re specifically looking for couples in the crowd, take a step back. Take a step back. Unwrap your arms around her. And then to make matters worse, and we’re trying to confirm this, it seems like one of the other women they show in this video, not his wife, thank goodness, but is somebody else at the company who if you watch this woman laughing after very clearly recognizes what just happened and that these two people she work with works with got caught. So, this is not even like a closed secret inside the company that this guy is having an affair with this woman, which makes it even worse for the wife. Also, play it cool. Like, it’s not like your wife is watching Coldplay Kiss Camp. Correct. Would anybody know had they not responded that they were just like, “Oh, yeah. We’re just having a good time at the Coldplay concert like everybody else. Here’s a kiss on the cheek.” But yes, the fact that the woman That’s a good point. Hid her face in shame. Yeah, Christian, you’re on to something. and he dove into the crowd in front of him. That is the reason we’re talking about it. That’s the only reason we’re talking about it. That That is the ultimate bozo behavior right there. You make a great point. Bozo decision, man. You should have uh Right. You should have just acted cool. We all know somebody who says, “I got pulled over and I didn’t get caught. I can’t believe I got pulled over and got away with X, Y, or Z.” They didn’t know what was going on. You Everyone’s heard that story from somebody. The guy who doesn’t get away is the guy who ran from the police. That guy always gets caught. Yeah. Yeah. But the guy who gets pulled over and is like, I my tail tail lights were out or headlights were out or I was driving my lights off or hopefully it wasn’t anything worse, but it could be something worse. But the guy who runs from the police gets caught and this guy ran from the police. Yeah. And in this case, it was Chris Martin that that caught them. He straight up says, “Are they they must be having it again.” Yeah. That’s why this is going viral. Yes, very much. That’s why everybody knows about it because Chris Martin’s like, “Hey, oh, look at these two.” All right, come on. You’re okay. Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy. Tough day for the wife. Oh, no. Absolutely not a tough day for the wife. Whether she knows it or not, good day for the wife because she’s about to get a half billion dollars. Listen, uh, have you do you know any people who are in family law? Have you ever met anybody in family law? Have you talked to them about their job and whatever? I cannot imagine being a family law attorney. It It sounds hard and gut-wrenching and awful to me. I, you know, bless the good the good people who do it because there certainly is a uh a need for it in society. But it it sounds like a really difficult way to make a living. I really wish I was her divorce attorney. I really wish I were. That whoever her divorce attorney is this is going to be the easiest fee that they’ve ever gotten ever. All he has to do is show that or she, I suppose, show that video in court and be like, “Here is the number of the account that uh we’re going to be using from here on in. Have a nice day.” Uh oh, Astronomer, you’re you’re exactly right. And so I’m I’m looking at this because I’m curious how much money astronomer the company is worth $1.2 billion, which is actually pretty small for a company, for a tech company. So he may not be a billionaire, but he’s a CEO of a company. I still would love to be his wife’s divorce attorney, but yes, this is easy. And the truth is, he can he can’t suffer any more public losses, right? He needs this to go away as quickly as possible. This guy is going to step down. I wouldn’t bet I bet this ruins this guy and and the the CPO. This gets back to our our get beat up on the golf course. Like this is gonna this is gonna ruin this guy because every time you Google this person, it’s a great clip of him harassing his employee. Yeah. Yes. Come on, man. Come on, man. Like, he’s got the ultimate come on, man. Now, as does the CPO. She has to lose her job, too, because you can’t be overseeing these types of relationships. She has no credibility everybody or telling people, you know, trying to enforce it when you’re breaking the rule. I would guess both these people are out. Their professional career is going to be significantly impacted by a kiss cam moment where Christian, you’re totally right. If they just had remained cool, uh would probably it would be office scandal but not national humiliation. Correct. And maybe it would still mean divorce because it gets back to the wife or whatever, but it would not mean Chris Martin pointing out Chris Martin pointing it out and then the Jake and Ben show picking it up, which is the nail in the coffin. Correct. Once we have it, once we once you get to Bozo of the week status, you’re in real trouble. I got it all on record. Chris Martin’s got it all on record. All on record. He does have two kids with his wife, but that makes me sad. horrendous. Yeah, that makes me sad. Yeah, you don’t want to know about your parents’ flaws. You want to, you know, you recognize your parents’ flaws just naturally because you get to know them. You don’t want to know about the bad things your parents are. Oh, I hope one of those kids isn’t in junior high cuz that kid showing up to junior high today where everybody everybody knows I’m looking at it I’m looking at it on page six. Oh, it’s on Yahoo. It’s on everywhere. Yeah, right. Everybody has this. If you Google Cold Play right now, which is one of the five biggest bands in the world still, this is all that’s coming up. Yeah. That eighth grader sitting in biology and just taking a beating from the rest of the school today. Yeah. Barring something unprecedented, this story is not going away for a while. This is salacious and exactly the way we love. Celebrity involved. It’s got money involved. It’s got affairs involved. It’s It’s a perfect story and horrible to be on the other side of the female Toby Fenderson. Yeah. Invol I guess that would be what what was uh Well, I guess Michael Scott married the HR gal. They did, but they had to leave, right? That was the whole plot line is they couldn’t be together. Yeah. Right. They had to And then he had to go meet her, right? Yeah. And leave the job. That the end of that show was so stupid. Yeah. Horrendous. But yes, it’s exactly the plot line of the show. It’s why you can’t do this. Why these are the people who can’t be together. Because she’s the HR person and you’re the CEO. You’re the boss. Yeah. Yeah. It’s not the the personal assistant or the sales associate. It’s the HR person. Really tough. Really tough for uh Andy Byron. The wife has deactivated her face Facebook. She’s devastated. And right now sounds like she was kind of getting harassed even. Of course she was. People are evil. Oh, she doesn’t care. She’s having a great day. I’m telling you whether whether she knows a real kick to the stuff. She’s having a great day. She’d probably like this guy. Wouldn’t you rather know? This first day is probably pretty brutal, but I bet. Yeah. Give it a couple days and she’ll she’ll be like, “Okay, he’s not the guy you thought he was.” He’ll have no fury. Harassing the HR person, which is that’s not irony. No. What do we know about Kristen Cable or Kabat? I I think the story is old enough now that it can still be funny. But do you know uh our friend Arty Fufu from X96? We were in the same building for a long time and they had somebody come in and do harassment training, you know, like everybody has. And he harassed her the whole meeting, which is another episode of The Office. I don’t think I’ve ever been more uncomfortable in my entire life. He’s back, right? I think so. Arty’s back. Yeah. Very strange person. Kristen joined the company in November 2024. New Andy called her a proven leader. Yeah, he admires leadership. We know what he likes. He does admire leadership. Anyways, go find the video. All right, stay tuned. We wrap up the show coming up next. Jake and Ben 975, the EKSL Sports Zone. Hey, bro. You hear us every day with our crazy opinions. Again, a big congratulations to our bozo of the week nominees. I I don’t have their names up in front of me anymore. Andy Byron and Kristen Ka or Kabat Ben and I uh continued talking about that during the break and really it just comes down to Nick Sabin just the smartest man. I mean gave his team we should find this this audio is somewhere but gave his team just the best advice. Said watch never uh never mess around with somebody that has less to lose than you do. Yeah. And he was explaining why he had never cheated on his wife. Right. And he said if he did, he would have to cheat with Hillary Rodm Clinton. Right. Which was such a funny line. Yeah. Uh but it’s it’s really true. This CV this CEO guy is going to be devastated because he had a lot to lose. More to lose than than she did than any other person in this relationship. Yep. his wife, his girlfriend, and you know the person who again the people who get hurt are his two kids and that’s awful. That’s awful. But you know what? Every you hope the company doesn’t go under. You know, we were talking about HR seminars and stuff like that. They should just play that Nick Sabin clip for everybody in like everybody every office should be required to watch it. I still can’t get over that. It’s the HR, the head of HR, which is just I don’t know if this is better than last week’s bozo of the week. And and we still have another day to have a candidate emerge, but this one isn’t bad. Well, the nice thing about last week’s Come on, man. Bang bang bang bozo of the week. Come on, man. Was that it was pretty tight. It was a five minute video. It started and it stopped. Yeah, we haven’t seen the end of this. In fact, this story unfortunately is just starting. Oh, I can’t wait for the divorce. I can’t wait for the trial. It’s going to be like OJ the board meeting who gets fired. I would kill to be on that first Zoom call today of what happens because the CEO is not on the board on the Zoom call and the head of HR or the CPO is not on the Zoom call, right? It’s everybody else and it’s notably that they’re absent and they’re going to say, “We all saw the video. We’re going to go through the weekend and figure out what happened. We’ve got a big board meeting on Monday. Astronomers bringing all the biggest people in to come in and sit at the board on Monday. We got to meet about this in person. Internal investigation. Yeah, we’ll make a decision, right? And maybe external, right? Maybe you have to bring somebody outside in to investigate this. All right. I had up the the article from page six. I just went to the actual New York Post and look at what is the top story, Ben. It’s a top story and the headline is above the headline’s legendary Viva Levita which is of course a very famous cold play song about what is that living the life story. Hey, guess what guys? Our CEO is on the front page of the New York Post. What for? Oh, I got busted on the kiss cam. With who? With that angel. with Kristen. I’d love to be working for that company today. Yeah, this would be I would love to be working for that company today. Can you imagine the Slack channels in that company today? Can we foyer that? It’s not the government, I guess. Yeah, unfortunately. But everybody’s talking about every time they saw them alone at the water cooler or what I mean. Oh, the person who’s having the best day is the person who has had a grudge against one of these two people. Somebody hates Kristen Kbo or Kabat or somebody hates Andy Byron. I’m just like, I’ve been waiting for this. I’ve been waiting for this moment. You know, I get weird sick satisfaction off of like saying the Phoenix Suns trades weren’t going to work and it’s blowing up and I still enjoy that like Suns fans came after me and then they’re watching their team fall apart. The person who actually has a personal vendetta against these people is about to have the best weekend of their life. This happening on a Thursday is the best. Especially if you’re at the company because Friday is already a nonwork day and then it’s all anybody’s talking about. And then you go into the weekend celebrating this this downfall. Yeah. This is this is great for the sicko. It’s good fodder. What do they call that? Shot and freuden or whatever. Yeah. Yeah. Enjoying somebody else. They’re having a bad day today. Whatever. Poor guy used to be Andy’s business partner that Yeah. he screwed over to get to the top. Right. Exactly. That he burned, stabbed in the back to get this job. No. Okay. So, the Zoom call I want to be on is the first one that the CEO’s on where he’s going to try and tap dance his way out of it cuz his I would bet money that his fate is sealed at this point. But, you know, the first Zoom call he’s on, it’s going to be like, “Hey guys, I know we’re making a lot of news, but we need to keep our heads down and keep focused on that end of quarter number. Everyone, come on now. Team on three. That’s the meeting that I want to see. Zoom calls, kiss cam, some of the funniest stories we’ve had in recent memory. Or I want to see the first HR seminar that this gal hosts that she’s welcome everyone. She can’t ever have this job again. She’s got to leave. But I would hate slash love to be in the next HR meeting for that company when they do the training. Right. The next training for that company which you know is coming down. They put that video up on the PowerPoint. They say don’t do this. Yeah. Right. This is not unacceptable. This behavior not acceptable. This is a good example of several violations. But look, so we have a big meeting every year with people who run KSL and we go sit in the big room downstairs. There’s several hundred people and they kind of just go through stuff, right? Everything. This is good. This is bad. Careful on your social media. This is going to be the photo that everyone uses on their PowerPoint presentation. Don’t do this. This bozo here. Yes, that’s true. What doesn’t matter where you are, and I’ve had this literal conversation with my bosses. It doesn’t matter where you are. You represent the company whether you want to or not. And this is going to be the photo everyone uses. But you’re famous. You’re on the front page. You made it above the fold. Congratulations. Just having the high the 4K head shot next to the photos. It’s really tough. Do you try and uh keep the relationship going? You kind of have to, right? Do you What is it all for? You’re losing your kids. You’re losing half your net worth at least. You’ve lost the house. You lost the family dog. You lost your wife most importantly other than the kids. Yeah, you might as well try and hold on to something. Who? Where are you staying? But now that’s Do you want to go stay in the hotel or you want to go stay at Mrs. Kbo’s house? Hopefully she doesn’t hopefully there’s not a Mr. Kbo cuz now you got to worry about someone punching you. Now you got to worry about actually being on the receiving end of the bang bang bang. Come on, man. Bozo of the week cuz he might come and beat you up. Her husband gonna come and try and fight you. That’s rough. Chris Martin calling it out totally because she was mortified too. Yeah. Which makes me think that maybe she was married. Yikes. No. Well, I’m not assuming that cuz she’s the HR person. You can’t be the HR person in this situation. Of course, she’s turning away at the Yeah. doesn’t want to be seen. It doesn’t It’s not guaranteed that she’s married. Again, it’s like finding out if your accountant’s stealing from you. Uh well, it’s like that’s your job to count the money and not steal from me. Looks like she is married. At least he did abide by the rule of she also has something to lose. Kind of. She’s not the CEO. No, she’s not. All right. Sorry, Lloyd. Why are you giving us that weird look? We did 35 minutes on an affair. talking about. We’re talking about sexual harassment. Sorry, we’ve been appropriate. Yeah. Don’t give me that look. Have you seen this video? It’s delicious. It’s hilarious. Hansen Scotty, you’re next. Christian 975, the KSL Sports Zone.
