Round One of the 153rd Open Championship at Royal Portrush. First-round leaders—Harris English, Haotong Li, Jacob Skov Olesen, Matt Fitzpatrick and Christiaan Bezuidenhout—all carding impressive 67s to set the pace.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler made a strong push late in the day, rallying to 3-under with clutch birdies on 16 and 17 as well as key moments from iconic holes. Including the infamous “Calamity Corner” par-3 16th, as players battled the swirling Northern Irish winds on one of the game’s most challenging links layouts.

[Applause] perfection. So they just reappear [Applause] after a nice start. Hate to give one away on the power threes. Or maybe not. Wow. How about that? Not kidding me. Let’s go. McKibben to tie the lead here with an eagle. He’s gone and done it. Over to Johnson. [Music] How about that? Does that count as an up and down for Birdie? Not as good as Phil’s bunker shot, but that was awfully well done. Now Olison to join the group at two under and another one goes in. Eagle effort at the second for Matt Fitzpatrick who missed a little one at the first. Oh, but makes up for it there. Catches that left that is now undercar as well. Just a step off the green at one. The defending champion. Even this part of his game he struggled with a little bit early in the year. This good one here though. It’s going to be a par for him. Now Nikolai to make it six players at two under. Yeah, good birdie opportunity and catching that right edge of the hole and that’s how you bounce back from a double. Third shot at the ninth for how Tong Lee drove it out of position. pin kind of in the right side of the green. Little deep. Oh my, that’s impressive to spin it back that much to hole high. Olison has a chance to get to four under now. Take advantage of the par fives. Only three of them and does he ever. Four under now. Needs to see one go in early. I think he raced that one home. The world’s number one players now at one underpar. A Batia. [Applause] Oh. Heads for home at Oshay. You seeing guys with ski hats. It’s raining a little bit of wind. Got to think it’s perfect when it’s Patrick is doing stuff like that. Exactly what it’s supposed to be again. Fitzpatrick, great putt to get to 200 par. Now Olison still sitting alone at top the leaderboard. Had to pitch it over some slope then up that second slope. Oh my god, how about that pitch shot? And Jacob all of a sudden is at five under par with a two- shot lead. We are going to get heavy rain in the next 5 to 10 minutes and I’m really looking forward to that. Music to the ears. Will this be for the crowds? It will for Shane Lowry right in the heart of it. Nicholson, one of the greatest touchs for decades. Doesn’t let us down with that one. Three run great run of golf. We get the last bit of all up to two and an excellent opening day. The longer grass here, Darren Clark at 17. I’m sure Big Darren had plenty of support out there this morning. What a shot. Get in. Oh yeah. That’s uh Shear will reverberate beautifully around the links. He read it correctly all day, man. That guy’s been on with the putter. That is a phenomenal round of golf. So Kjanna talking about quite tight spinners and that’ll work in for uh in for eagle trying to get it up and down from the right hand side of par 51 12. Oh that’s a nice one to make. was very close of finding that water hazard short ride of green on 12 and walks off with a fine birdie. Three under Fitzpatrick. Hashino for his eagle from the back edge. [Applause] Now that’s the way to bounce back. Champion Daniel Brown from two weeks ago in Munich. An emotional victory after losing one of his friends. in the leadup. No. Oh my goodness. From the other side of the hole, it drops for Dan Brown. Oh my words. There we are. Slam dunk. What a roar. And what a roar. [Applause] Hello. Hello. Oh, the pass three misses the the green on the left hand side and walks off the green with a two. It’s a calamity corner. T’s been moved up only 205 yds into the breeze. Oh, get down. Get down. Get in. What a shot. Flirting with a right hand hollow but never left the flag. Here’s Christian Bazaden out for his two. Oh, rattle. Rattle. Now, how far past was it going? Doesn’t matter. Take it. No shame. So far above the green. Downwind. You can get onto this green. But Sheffller. Oh my word. What are you laughing about? There’s so much to say about that shot. The sound off the club face. That’s extraordinary. Haven’t seen Shane Lowry for a while, but here we are. Chance to get back into the red figures. Yes, surely surely he’s right in the heart of the cup. Huge draw for Shane Larry. The wedge was perfect. Probably as good as he could have done, but it’s left himself quite a difficult one for an unlikely birdie fall. He’s got it, Houston. What a great putt. Most players have lacked a bit of pace and miss on the right. Not him. Sun shining brightly on the power five. Come on. Get in there. There’s a few birdies. And here an eagle for Spaniard. Just below the ridge unfortunately for Hassan. Oh, that doesn’t make a j of difference. P it right in the middle. Harris English on the second. Birdie on the first and here on the second. What a start this would be. Get in. Get in. Still buddy. Acceptable for an eagle. Some shot to get it this close. It’s a double breaker. There we go. What a start. American var. Wow. Janna. Little bit of lagging. Looking good. Oh, hello. Hello. Yeah, put a smile on your face, son. Right. Second shot into eight left in. Oh, look at this. The flag stick doesn’t want to overdo this one, but needs to get it there obviously. Oh, bit of a bonus birdie there for Rory Maroy from under that swale. Beautiful iron shot in here for Harris English at the the six par three and another birdie bites the dust. What a gorgeous way to start. Connor Graham is on the 17th Scottish amateur. Nice T-shot and it what a moment that would have been. I don’t know how it stayed out. Just needs to be mindful of that right hand front bunker. Doesn’t need to take that on. [Applause] Well, he didn’t mean to take it on, but he did anyway. Just carry the first few yards of green. A little trundle up. Bit of spin and a bit of in. Put me down for a three. This for a three. Oh, has it as well. That’s a big big leap up the board. Christian Bzenhower into that tie for the lead now. Beautifully done. Huge roar. But the attempt for English rolls it right in. So he moves back to four under par. So there we are on the famous yellow leaderboard. those who lie four on the par and Jacob Scoison howong Lee Matt Fitzpatrick Christian Bazadenhout and Harris English setting the pace as we near the end of a very long challenging but entertaining first day of the 153rd Open at Royal Port Rush. Yes, sir.

  1. Guys, listen up. We need more than just putts and chip-ins. Leave out some of the 10-20 footers and throw in some guys mucking it around in the gorse/fescue, trying to get out of bunkers, bunting it over greens etc. Also, throw up at least a couple of pages of the leaderboard at a minimum. This looks like you're only doing the bare minimum effort here and you're the flippin' R&A!

  2. Padraig is such a G, I'm happy to see him genuinely happy from that reception. Great birdie to kick off the tournament.

  3. Whoever made this highlight package, the point is not just to show a bunch of random shots. Tell the story of the round. Its a terrible highlight package honestly.

  4. Dan Hicks already commentated how great it would be to watch Rory walking up 18 on Sunday with the Open lead——BIAS RUNS DEEP AT NBC, SHUT IT.

  5. What was in the air while Sheffler's shot was in the air, and that was caught on coursecam audio? The shot at minute 6:08. That indeed was a highlight, or added to one.

  6. Would have loved to have seen some actual shots instead of a bunch of people making putts over and over.
