Today I’m joined by Tyler Pingle out here at the Ping proving grounds. Yes. And fun opportunity today. We’re going to be checking out Ping’s new i240 iron and the new IDI. [Music] Give us a little rundown what we’re going to be doing today. Uh we’re going to be testing your Gamer 7ir right now, the 230 7iron against the new I240 7ironir. See if there are any differences in playability, uh height, dispersion pattern. And we’re also going to be looking at the IDI uh potentially as a 4iron replacement, a little higher ball flight, a little more forgiving. And the the I230 iron for me has been one of the most consistent iron sets that I’ve played in years. I mean, expectations out of I240 compared to 230. What have you seen thus far with tour feedback and also just initial player testing? Uh the biggest difference right now is that you’ll see is the tour groove. Uh, we’ve removed that microax groove from the i230 and that’s now the tour groove on the 240. We’re seeing consistent more a little bit higher spin rates from fairway shots which the tour pros like. We are seeing about a 6 to 8° height difference with the irons. And overall in the set about a 6 to 7% increase in MOI especially going up into those the longer irons. So a little bit easier to hit a little bit higher launching with the weight distribution. If we break that down higher, further straighter. Correct. I mean, for somebody that is a little bit on the lower launch, lower spin side, as you guys know, uh, I’m excited to jump into I240. Like I said, 230’s been a fantastic club. So, Tyler, you ready to jump into it? Absolutely. Let’s go. So, before we hit some shots, make sure give us a like, subscribe to the channel, and let’s get after it. Perfect. Here is the new i240. Let’s see if it uh does what we want it to do. And this is my first time seeing it in person. Okay. So, I mean, straight away I’m going, okay, compared to what I’m used to in the 230 and repositioning some weight a little more towards the badging back in here, we’ve reduced the weight by about 8 to N g of the badging, which we’ve been able to redistribute in the head. A little bit lower center of gravity. Uh, gives it a little bit higher launch. Love that. That tour groove on there instead of that microax groove. So you’ll see the bad the groove patterns a slight different. And then there is uh same loft, same lie as the 230 irons with the exception of the 8 and 9 irons. There’s about a half a degree difference in the bounce on the bottom of the golf club in the bounce. In the bounce, but other than that, it’s it’s going to play almost identical to what the 230 is. Higher launching, slightly more forgiving. I love every bit of that. Let’s see. Good to go. All right. So I240 I at a dress nothing’s really changed. I mean heel to toe same length very close and depth of face I nothing really that’s jumping out to me that says this was a different golf club. We love the look of it. Everybody the look the feedback from again from the 210 to the 230 to this. We wanted to keep a lot of the same DNA in there. I mean, straight away noticeably higher. That came out of a different window. Yes. Uh 122 ball speed, 15.9 launch, 5900 spin, carry at 176.9, landing angle at 45.6. So, I mean, straight away almost a degree higher than the average. Mhm. Carry number really good. Almost. We’re a little bit longer on the carry. Obviously, your good ones are maybe a little bit longer. So, we’ll see what happens over the average of 10 those couple of swings. Dude, I’m digging it. These are good. They are really good. Not your best, but still dead straight. I say I I chunked that. Yeah, I felt it in the top of the back swing. Just wasn’t quite there. Yep. Tried to save it. Failed miserably. But the result is I mean what we would call in the business a very playable miss 100%. That’s right on the button. So good. That’s your highest ball speed of the day so far. So going through the process, slowing down, being a little more deliberate. You’re saying there’s something to all that, Tyler? Yeah. Well, works for those guys and gals on tour. I mean, I guess they hit it. Okay. Not quite as good as a uh you know 40some. Never was. Right. So that’s 10 swings with each club. That was really good. And that’s again a little bit of a pull left of your target. That that ball speed’s going to be a little bit higher. Yeah. Which is expected. But overall, if you look at the dispersion pattern on that screen, yeah, much tighter left to right. No question. Now, for somebody like myself, Sure. as I look at this and I’m going, “Love everything about it.” 100%. The only critique that I have in that current I230 is when I get into that four iron range. Sure. Now, I know we talked about IDI. So, give us a little rundown. And from what you’re seeing, am I an IDI guy? I would have to test the 4iron 240 against the IDI. But yes, I think if you’re what you’re complaining about with the height with the 4iron, the IDI makes a lot of sense between the 230 and the 240. I think the IDI, you’re going to see a much higher launch, a much more playable golf ball for the type of what you’re looking for. Well, now it begs the question, you got one for us to hit? I sure do. more of a traditional type driving iron. The biggest thing this here is it’s an inner air design. So, think of um um an air bladder inside of there to kind of help mute the sound and kind of push out on all the edges of the golf club. Uh slightly wider sole. Yep. A little bit easier turf interaction, slightly more compact design than the eye crossover. Sure. Uh this year we were able to with the two iron, with the two IDI, more of a based driving based iron, a little bit lower launch, a little bit lower spin. The four iron this year is more geared towards that fairway shot. So a little bit higher launching, a little bit spinnier. Overall, a very, very good 4iron replacement, especially for those that are challenged to get that 4 iron up in the air. First impressions at address and it is a lot more ironike. Yes. than what we had with crossover a little better. Yeah. I mean, I covered that one a little bit. Mhm. But that had some speed. That swing with a 4 iron is going to result in a much different shot. Uh yeah, absolutely. What was our numbers there? That was 10 1/2 launch, 3368 spin, carried at 221, came down 34. Again, you kind of covered that a little bit. One of the low draw, so I expect those numbers to be a little bit off. So, let’s see what happens with some better swings. Held on to it a little bit that time, but ball flight window was much better. Yeah, that was the height you’re looking for. Obviously, you blocked it a little bit, but Yeah, that doesn’t suck. That’s more like it. Yeah, that’s what I’m expecting out of you. I’m glad you’re expecting that. There you go. It’s about as good as we’re going to do. I think that was hit. I mean, the misses that I had with this towards the toe, towards the heel. Facial awareness for me as a player wasn’t the best for that sample, but I the overall results in the ball flight that I was seeing, the window that it was coming out of, I was missing it right and left. Right and left, but the carry number was carries carry numbers were really really close to each other on all those types of strikes, which is always a good thing. Like that, especially in a four iron. Correct. If the north and south is good, uh, then east and west gets dialed in from me. Yep. That’s more of a swing. We’re good. Yep. And then the 7ir, your this 7ironir we saw launched a little bit higher than your 237 iron we saw the dispersion pattern get just a little bit tighter for you. It was getting that launch angle up ever so slightly. Descent angle came in a little bit steeper overall slightly better than what you currently have in the bag. I would agree 100%. I This checks all the boxes that the I230 was checking and then some. Sure. So, this is something I could confidently bag today and happily put in play tomorrow. So, I mean, with that, that’s a uh that’s a testament to how good the improvement is from I230, an iron I absolutely love, saw a huge amount of success with going into next generation. Awesome. Yeah. So, Tyler, thank you so much for hosting us. My pleasure. And when you are ready to try new Ping i240 and the IDI, make sure check these guys out, like and subscribe to the channel. We’ll see you next time.
