Callaway’s extension of the Apex Ai iron lineup is continuing with the new Apex Ai150, joining the Ai200 and Ai300 models. The Ai150 is a Player’s Performance model that is designed for more advanced golfers, aimed at providing consistency in spin while emphasizing feel and distance.
The Apex Ai lineup launched last year and was aimed at bringing more consistency to players of all levels.
I recently swapped the T100S in my bag for the Ai300, and it has brought significantly more confidence and consistency to my game, mostly due to the confidence-inspiring look and it being a better fit for my game.
Apex Ai150 Design Thesis
Callaway chose to do a few things differently with the 150. Most OEMs tend to minimize the shape and size of the iron head as the product is intended for more premium and advanced players. This is not what they did with the 150.
Instead, it is upscaled by taking its Tour Cavity Back (TCB) design and making the face larger, the topline thicker, and the sole wider. It also features more offset, a common characteristic of forgiving irons.
The Ai150 also has other forgiving design complements, like internal tungsten weighting for higher launch characteristics and increased MOI.
These things are not necessarily typical of Players irons. Callaway is truly pushing the envelope here, but it’s worth noting that the Apex Ai300 irons are among the best I’ve played, despite being geared more toward improvement than workability.
Look and Feel
Callaway used a 1025 forged hollow-body design with a 455 face cup from 3 iron to 7 iron, and a 17-4 face for the 8 iron up to the approach wedge.
This improves ball speed for distance and feel for more accuracy.
