Paul Wearing has been forced to withdraw from the Open Championship after suffering a setback with a lingering shoulder injury. The Englishman, a two-time DP World Tour winner, was set to make his sixth career appearance in golf’s oldest major. We wearing place in the 156 player field, will now be filled by American Davis Riley. The 40-year-old Wearing showed promise at the Genesis Scottish Open last week, shooting back-to-back rounds of 69 to make the cut. However, he retired during Saturday’s third round after slipping to three over par at the Renaissance Club. The decision to pull out suggests a recurrence of the same shoulder problem that’s plagued his 2024 campaign. Earlier this season, Wearing withdrew from the RAS Alka Championship in January with a similar complaint. After just one round, he shared an update with fans on Instagram. Got to have to withdraw today from what feels like a home event for me, he wrote. I had a slight shoulder issue during round one and it hadn’t improved in warm-up today. I’m sure it’s nothing major, so a week of work to get back to full strength. He also pulled out of the PGA Tours Valpar Championship in March. Again, citing a shoulder issue with wearing out. Riley joins a finalized field for the 153rd Open set to be contested at Royal Portrush in County Antrum. The final qualifying spots were claimed on Sunday with Chris Goodup fresh off his win at the Renaissance Club, Nikolai Hodgegard and Mattie Schmid booking their places in the year’s final major. Xander Chaofell will arrive as the defending champion while 2019 winner Shane Lowry will look to lift the clarit jug once again on familiar ground.
