Northern Ireland is buzzing with anticipation, as 2025 Masters winner Rory McIlroy looks to win the Claret Jug in his home country, snatching the title from reigning champion Xander Schauffele.

The 156-man field tees off in Northern Ireland on Thursday, July 17, and a winner will be crowned on Sunday, July 20.

Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland will host The Open Championship in 2025. It is the third time the course has hosted the championship, most recently in 2019 when Irishman Shane Lowry won the title.

The Dunluce Links course is considered to be one of the best courses in the world, and will provide a unique challenge to the entire field.

Home country hero McIlroy will be the headline player in this year’s tournament, hoping to win The Open Championship for the second time. He missed the cut last time the competition was played here in 2019, but McIlroy played well at the Scottish Open last weekend.

Lowry won the title at Royal Portrush and will be hoping to take the crown from the most recent Open Championship winner, Schauffele.

World number one Scottie Scheffler and LIV Golf’s Bryson DeChambeau will be attempting to win The Open Championship for the first time in their careers. The Americans have five major titles between them and should never be counted out in any tournament. 

How to watch The Open Championship 2025

UK viewers will be able to watch the tournament live on Sky Sports Golf. Coverage will begin at 6.30 am on Thursday and Friday, 9 am on Saturday and 8 am on Sunday.

The 2025 Open prize money will remain unchanged from last year.

This means the purse for the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush will stay at $17 million (£12.6 million), with $3.1 million (£2.3 million) reserved for the Champion Golfer.

We have had five different winners in the last five Open Championships. Schauffele comes into 2025 as the reigning champion after winning at Scotland’s Royal Troon Golf Club in 2024.
