For the first installment of our Four Pillars playlists, there’s no better place to start than with Kenta Kobashi. The creator of the Burning Hammer and undeniably one of the greatest wrestlers to ever step in the ring, Kobashi became a staple of the golden era of All Japan in the 90s, alongside Mitsuharu Misawa, Akira Taue and Toshiaki Kawada. The style of wrestling that followed them to Pro Wrestling NOAH in the 2000s reached and inspired wrestlers far beyond Japan, as you see plenty of King’s Road elements all over the place in 2020. From American independent matches to NXT main events, all types of wrestlers have tried to tap into the magic and intensity that Kenta Kobashi brought to the ring, with varying levels of success. Whether he was clobbering an opponent with the Orange Crush lariat or employing his surprisingly picture-perfect moonsault to end a thrilling match (see Kobashi and Kikuchi vs The Can-Am Express), Kobashi never failed to amaze everyone who saw him perform. Check out some of his classics against Misawa, Stan Hansen and Yoshihiro Takayama, and pay your respects to one of the most influential wrestlers of all time.
