the whole of Super League watched last Saturday and watched what happened at the Brick Community Stadium as you went into a 226 halftime lead and lost the game ultimately to Hull FC they all gave credit to Hull FC for their performance they’re all waiting to see what reaction will come from the Wigan Warriors postgame in the changing rooms was your message to your players any different than it has been in the last 12 months oh of course yeah it was uh we always speak openly honestly uh look at myself first but there’s a few things we got wrong that day uh and and we all know we’ve been successful because we’ve got more things right than wrong but we’ve got to learn from last week and one thing I do know is when I look back over the last few years every time we’ve had our loss or a few losses we’ve learned some important lessons i can remember to the game what we took out of it and how it’s shaped us to be a better team and a better group so that’s what has to happen hopefully we see signs tonight but it’s not just playing well tonight it’s it’s things that will help us through the year can you shed some light on what you did learn in particular from that whole FFC defeat yeah I think when we’ve been we have we have the capability to put a few tries on teams in close succession and when that’s happened sometimes we get a bit loose with the ball and we forget what we forget our DNA a little bit and uh invite opposition teams into the game so we’ve got to be ruthless enough to when we put ourselves in them positions to go back to basics for a few sets a block of the game and and win it again okay maybe a bit more patience John matty second half in particular if we look at the stats ball control at 50% eight complete sets eight incomplete sets 10 errors is that what you’re talking about having the patience and discipline to stick to what you do regardless of the conditions yeah we were probably a bit flippant with the game and if someone could have gone at Halime and say we’re going to lose this game just play conservative for 20 minutes and we’ll probably win i think we all would have bought into it a little bit more no it’s them kind of messages that were being said but they hit home a lot harder after a defeat is it good the timing of this to just keep your confidence levels in check for your players you know you’re saying there’s a bit of flamboyance maybe overplaying is that a symptom of overconfidence i’m guessing he doesn’t buy that line that there’s a good defeat no it has to be good it’s my job to make sure it’s good it’s our job to make sure it’s good we might get beat tonight we might lose five on the spin at the end of it has to be good bit of a softer question from me Matt you talk about Wigan DNA deeply rooted in its community a lot like Leads you’re wearing a special shirt tonight tell us how that might motivate the players and what that’s about well uh that’s a big question uh it represents Wigan Hospice uh which is a a fantastic charity uh so many people I know have been looked after by that charity but it also represents Liam Marshall’s mom and we think it represents moms strong women strong females who who play a big part in our life and and what value they add to us as individuals us as a club and uh we want to do it proud well we would all echo those sentiments as we see them warm up one of the the players we get an eye on is Jack Faramund there’s one person’s misfortune is another person’s opportunity in the game of rugby league and you get to give Jack a first start of this year in the halves yeah and uh he’s ready uh we threw him in last year and we weren’t sure he was ready now now we know he is because he’s done it uh and I must say he’s been exceptional in the last few months the way he’s trained the way he’s conducted himself he he can’t wait what does that look like when you know somebody’s ready well you to be honest until you see him do it on on a big stage you always hope they are you always think they are but we’ve seen him do it uh and we’ve just seen sides in training where he more than his own when he’s either side of of the game in training uh physically he’s developed and he’s committed himself and hope he has a good night tonight but he’s going to have a great career a word on Jay Field um obviously missing a hamstring injury how close was he to making it tonight um the fact is the scam was clear uh but he’s still a bit tight so uh I’m not having that on my conscience to put him out there tonight i’d be foolish this time of the year uh you know we’ve got some you know it’d be good for have him out there tonight but it’s a long season and so he probably wasn’t that close but I’d expect him to feature in you know very soon matt you’re considered an influential voice in the game when you choose to opine on on a topic there’s a lot happening in the game of rugby league and I’m talking about off the field you’ll be aware of all of that i’ll ask you a double parted question does it affect you and the playing group in any way and what message would you give to the game of rugby league as it’s going through such a tumultuous period off the field that’s a lot pregame i get that and you you’ve got other things to think about but I think your voice and your opinion is important yeah I don’t think this generation of players will be thinking about it right now but you’ve got to be concerned about Jack Farman uh and the future of the game i think that’s where we need to place our focus too much time is being spent about individual agendas each club uh I think we’re very good as a sport coming together when people are in a bad time or charities but I think we should come together and sort out their sport uh we should commit and imagine that it’s going to disappear and what would we do now i’ve got this chance so uh we’ve got so much intelligence experience in in all the boardrooms just get in a room for two days and come out with a vision that is rooted in working class ethics but is ambitious um and we’ll all get behind it we’ll do as we’re told is your emphasis then on negotiations and and communication but do it in a in a proper environment and not maybe in a public forum exactly that exactly that uh stop don’t worry about winning points you know getting your your side of the story out when you have a meeting take pride in not everyone finding out what was said all that matters is the vision that comes out of it and there’s a lot of people in this sport who want leadership who will follow guidance whether it suits them in the short term or not as long as we can uh you know keep our sport growing with some some vision and excitement

  1. Can you explain topline what the guys are touching on here? What are the main issues plaguing the UK game atm? (aussie asker)

  2. We made the same mistakes again tonight. Too many penalties and bad decisions. Will always trust Matty to get it right though.

  3. Rugby League in Britain is run by people who are stuck in the past and refuse to do the things that will make the game better. Australia listened to Murdoch and Packer, we ignored them and the NRL is now streets ahead like it or not. Only three or four clubs running at a profit is unsustainable.

  4. Wild aspirations of Los Angeles and a global product are fantasy at best. Rugby union has already beaten us to that. Invest in what we have here. Might need to amalgamate a few clubs and sell off land to finance bigger projects but there is a place for RL along the M62 corridor. Invite young kids into the grounds for a couple of quid rather than have empty stadiums. Think we have too many small clubs with small fan bases. Create new franchises that serve a larger area rather than tiny town representation.

  5. Saints fan here… Pete 100% spot on. Lots of chairman’s acting in their own best interests in the short term but not long term. If it carries on we will be a 2nd rate competition to nrl anyway

  6. I’m not a hardcore League fan but enjoy the sport and also see its frailties.

Personally I see Super League as actually LESS ambitious and brand focused – than during the early years of its inception. It feels like it’s gone stale and hasn’t ever had a committed blueprint to grow and evolve.

    Such as Cornwall for example.

Perfect for an immediate Super League franchise with the rest of the clubs behind it, but was never going to work if planted as a seed to grow slowly.

Union is no better, the club focus inhibits the bigger picture and its dying a death by a thousand cuts.

The epitome of a slowly boiling frog.

  8. Yes the rfl are to blame but sky are paying less in the tv deal yet your losing programs and getting repeats and getting charged more there to busy having multiple pundits football especially rugby league is the best sport the nrl need to come in and show us the way

  9. The trouble with rugby league is its fan base, which is mostly working families with limited cash. There needs to be cheaper tickets to encourage people to go to the games instead of putting matches on in chuffin Las Vegas. How about playing big games in the midlands, the southwest, Scotland, Ireland. Really try to get new teams. But relegation and promotion to the top tier need to be set in solid rules so teams know what to achieve.
As it stands, Rugby League is going to disappear or become some sideshow game with just a handful of teams playing games no one is interested in

  10. It's sad how this great game doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Look what happened to darts. A man with vision raised its profile.

  11. Hire V'ylandys to Run SL and Gus Gould to establish the IMG Grading. Gus would definitely make every team from SL to League one to be Penrith standard with their juniors.

  12. Imagine how good the comp would be if all clubs could invest heavily in academies. We're almost in a vicious circle of overpaying for poor quality talent at some clubs, then not having enough left over to develop youth. How on earth are Huddersfield near full salary cap

  13. The reality is the financial structure in Rugby League is like a house of cards and not viable. Rugby Union is in the same boat and struggling big time with clubs across England, Wales and Ireland on their arses.
Either change the whole structure or go semi-professional – which some people would say both sports should be anyway.

  14. The one thing I've learned and I learned this last season, it does not work for us putting French at full back when field is injured, we need French at 6 farramond isnt ready yet, get French back at 6 put zach full back. Either way it's same old we struggle everytime French or field gets injured we have no cover for them, and the 1s we do have ain't ready yet, if this isn't a awake up call to get some backs signed next season then I don't know what is, then again salary cap is killing the sport we probably only have room for 1 more player it's a joke needs changing. Got no complaints about the results in the past 2 weeks the better teams won its that simple

  15. Is there going to be a breakaway league of clubs? NRL Europe (wigan, warrington) vs Super League/RFL (Saints, Leigh) – might get spicy.

  16. Rugby league is diabolical to watch. It’s a northern monkey pie & mash game to watch! It’s just dreadful compared to Union. Backwards thinking of a by gone era.

  17. The majority of popular sports are not on normal tv so less people are watching sport so less people take up sport yes they get a lot of money from the likes of sky etc

  18. Unless there are some serious changes in the way RL. is run and managed and those myopic directors at Leeds, Saints,Wigan & Warrington
think slightly less about their ego's and simply creaming off most of the profits around , RL. simply will not survive !!!

  19. Watched rugby league since 1964….the 80’s were the golden years hanley offiah etc……then union went pro and we all stood by and let it overrun us…thinking well be ok but were not…union is a world game league isnt….its always been a massive hill to climb and its almost vertical now and we are slowly sliding down it…our nails wont be strong enough to cling on soon!!

  20. 50 % errors in that game . 50 % completed sets and no aparent angst about that . i just watched the nrlw game 2 . state of origin. it was in pouring rain . i cannot recall one dropped ball. every set except one was completed and on a muddy field with torrential rain. you boys better lift your game if you think you can beat the kangaroos by making mistakes , think again. our boys and gals dont make mistakes in the nrl.
