The PGA Tour is across the pond this week and the second round of the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open is in the books.

The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, Scotland, is the stage once again. The 7,282-yard, par-70, Tom Doak-design opened in 2001 and ranks 10th on the Golfweek’s Best 2025: The top 50 classic courses in Great Britain and Ireland list.

Defending champ makes cut, three Brits in top four, surprise leader at Scottish

Chris Gotterup fired a smoking 61 on Friday and is at 11 under, the lone golfer to reach double digits under par so far. He has one PGA Tour victory on his resume in 61 starts.

Right behind him are three players from England: Harry Hall is in solo second at 9 under, while Matt Fitzpatrick and Marco Penge are tied for third at 8 under with Ludvig Aberg, who bogeyed the last. He recorded eight birdies in a 14-hole stretch prior to that last bogey.

There’s a seven-way tie for sixth, and it’s a group that includes Rory McIlroy, who posted a Friday 65 a day after shooting 68.

Robert MacIntyre makes two late birdies to get inside cutline

The Scottish defending champion took a nearly fatal blow with a double bogey on the par 4 13th hole but he bounced right back with a birdie on the 14th. That got him to even par. Then on the par-3 17th hole, Bobby Mac stuffed his iron shot and drained another birdie putt to get to 1 under. A par at the last and he’s on to the weekend.

Xander Schauffele extends consecutive cuts made streak

Schauffele shot 68-66 over the first two days and as of 12:25 p.m. ET, he was tied for 10th at 6 under, well inside the cut line. This will mark his 68th straight cut made on the PGA Tour. It’s the longest active streak and the sixth-longest on the PGA Tour. Tiger Woods holds the mark at 142. Byron Nelson (113), Jack Nicklaus (105), Hale Irwin (86), and Dow Finsterwald (72) make up the rest of the top five.

Rory McIlroy will enter the weekend in contention at the Genesis Scottish Open

World No. 2 Rory McIlroy is feeling right at home back in the UK, which is a good sign heading into next week’s Open Championship.

The 2025 Masters champ shot 5-under 65 on Friday to follow up his first-round 68. He’ll enter the weekend at 7 under, well inside the cutline and just four strokes behind outright leader Chris Gotterup as of 11:30 a.m. ET.

McIlroy was cruising right along before a hiccup at the 17th, where he made bogey. Aside from that, he played exceptionally, making six birdies and 11 pars.

“The conditions were so benign this morning, hardly any wind. And the wind started to pick up a little bit on the back nine for us but still very, very manageable,” McIlroy said. “I started to struggle a little bit. Hit a couple of wayward drives but did well to scramble for pars. Yeah, and disappointing to drop one coming in there but overall it’s a really good score and puts me right into the thick of things going into the weekend.”

Matt Fitzpatrick fires 63, moves into a tie for third at the Genesis Scottish Open

It’s been somewhat of a struggle for Matt Fitzpatrick this season, but he’s had a few bright spots. He was T8 at the Rocket Classic in his last start and he finished in the same spot at the PGA Championship at Valhalla in May.

The 30-year-old Englishman is on a mission in the UK over the next few weeks to get back in the winners circle, where he’s been before. He won the 2022 U.S. Open and the 2023 RBC Heritage.

He’s off to a good start in Scotland after signing for a bogey-free 63 on Friday to move into a tie for third with fellow countrymen Marco Penge at 8 under, three shots behind solo leader Chris Gotterup as of 11 a.m. ET.

“Just hitting my irons much better,” Fitzpatrick said after his second round. “That was the big thing that I was really struggling. If you’re not giving yourself birdie opportunities, it’s hard to climb up the leaderboard. I feel like since I’ve been here, that’s better, and combined with, I feel like I’m a half-decent putter and can give myself plenty of chances and make the putts, you’re going to be able to shoot some good scores.”

Chris Gotterup goes low with 61 in the second round

After a solid 68 on Thursday, Chris Gotterup went wild on Friday at the Scottish, firing a 29 on the front nine en route to an outstanding 61 to move to 11 under par.

“I definitely played good today. Not a lot of wind in the morning which was obviously beneficial. But yeah, it’s funny, when it flips you get some holes that you like and some holes that you don’t like and vice versa. I think there’s definitely certain holes that feel nice. Nice three pars to finish,” he said. “You just take what you can get, what the course gives you with the wind, and I think it’s much more pin location oriented and where you can get to in some spots you have to be smart and take your 30-footer on some holes.”

Gotterup made over 130 feet in putts on the way to the lead on a course that’s quite unlike many of those in the U.S.

“We went over to North Berwick on Tuesday, and it’s not TPC Deere Run, where it’s point-and-shoot and you have to be on,” he said. “I like working the ball and I think I’m creative in some aspects. When you get a little wind and some bouncing, it just makes it fun. Doesn’t make it any easier. You’ve got to be on and hit some good shots. I think it’s definitely, like you said, a change of pace and it’s a nice change of pace.”
