I am really excited today cuz we’ve got my first proper guest on my channel that’s not one of my mates coming to do a test shoot and it’s a guy that I met doing this content creation journey cuz we live in the similar area. It’s Matty known on Instagram as the alt golf golfer because of all of this. He’s this guy’s a fashion I even put the long socks on today so I could fit in. I am liking the high tube socks. Do you know what mate I put these on today? I don’t know if I pull these off to the way. I’m loving it man. The added ass you got it going on. It’s good. I I tell you what I’ve got so much stuff. I need a deal with them mate. That’s what I need. Right. We’re out here today at Old Thorns, which is Matty’s home golf club. We’re going to play the first six holes. Little six-hole match. Match play. Matty’s going to show us round. Matty plays off a four handicap. Yeah, four at the moment. Yeah. Coming up or down? It’s gone. It’s gone up recently. It was down to three, but with some of the courses I’ve been playing recently, open competitions, 36 whole matches and stuff like that. They’ve um it’s gone up unfortunately. Well, I’m off for 11.3, but I’m really struggling my game at the moment. I did say to Matt, I think we should postpone this cuz I’m going to play honking. But I am getting 13 shots over the 18 holes. So for the six hole match we’re getting it works out as three shots on the stroke index hole match. Let’s see how we get on. We got some really good drone footage. This golf course looks great from the air as well. Really really beautiful but tough and narrow as well. Yeah it is. We’ve chose we’ve chose my my favorite holes. The actual first sort of six holes are quite challenging. Beautiful aesthetic. Yeah. Good greens. Yeah the the club champs here in two days and we’re filming this on our last hole and the greens today are absolute pucker. This is a really great resort course as There’ll be loads of you have seen this on that golf breaks your golf travel. So this might be a really nice way for you to see the first six holes here and maybe see how to play them and how not to play them. Right. So first hole we’ve got a 343 yd par4. This one just goes up the brow of the hill. Dog legs round to the right. Quite a large green from memory. Matty. Yeah. Not not too bad. Yeah. What you got, mate? What you going with? What have I going? I’m going with a fivewood off the tea. Um just cuz you want to get up onto that sort of that top plateau at the top there. Um, anything sort of longer with certain swing speeds, drivers and all that, you can go over and down and too far with it. So, let’s see it, mate. Yeah, the miss is nowhere really cuz you’ve got trees right and trees left. Okay. What a strike. Just watched Matty on the range for a few minutes hitting a few irons and he’s pulled out the fairway wood and just absolutely ripped it down there. That’s like five firewood as well. Unreal. Right, driver for me because I haven’t got the guns that Matty’s got. Skyed it a little bit and it’s probably going to be blocked out, isn’t it? Or if they cut that big tree down. I think we could be okay. Yeah, maybe. Maybe. Maybe. 80 yards, mate. I got 80 yards. Good job. Good job for a lefty on this one. You go, you got a bunker on the left and you got little pot bunkers on the right as well, which is quite a um quite a nice little bit. As Matty’s alluded to, I’ve got a little bit lucky here as a lefty. There used to be a massive tree there, didn’t there, Matt? I think it would have gone now. I think it got struck by lightning. Did it really? And all the members then came in on the Sunday morning or Saturday morning, celebrated cuz it was because of how firm everything is. I’m going to try and just like hit a 54 and try and get there. Ball above my feet. Expecting it to maybe move a little bit to the right as well. Come out a bit right as expected. It’s on the green. We got a chance. We got a chance. It’s good. Long putt. Long putt. Yeah, I’m quite happy with that two- shot to be fair. Really good. Fairway fair’s a bit baked. What you got, mate? What you going? I’ve got a 58. I think you just got with this one. You’ve got to get it up. green goes a little bit of a down slope. So, it does run on quite a fair bit. So, it’s it’s this is quite a hard one because if you get it too short, you’re on the the hump and it will kick forward. Yeah. Lovely strike. Just come out a little left on you. Oh, it’s very good. It’s kicked in. Sit. Sit. Sit. What do you reckon? 25 ft. Just a little long left. Yeah, a little long left. It’s one of them where you p even if you pitch it like to the flag, it’s going to go. Yeah. So, I’m happy with that. I think this is going to swing a little bit right from left to right. I think go a little Oh, I left a smelly distance, mate. Little bit uphill. It’s going to break off to the right. It’s uh Yeah, it’s I’d say only just outside the left edge. Putting’s definitely not my forte, hence the lab. Getting it in early. Same as me, mate. Yeah, always. I think it’s standard YouTube golf really. Get it in. Yeah. P. Yeah, always the putter. Aggressive roll, but it’s good. Great effort, mate. I’m going to give you that on the first as a friendly match. Yeah, I’ll give you that. Take your time. This is like you said just then, mate. This is the bit on YouTube like you can hold like three footers and stuff on your own. We just tap him without even looking. Once you’re on YouTube, there’s a camera rolling. Three footers feel like six foot. Six footers feel like 9 foot. Yeah. He’s done it. He’s done it. Nice half on the first. Lovely half, sir. Second hole. 499 yard par five. Dog legs almost 90° around the corner once we get through those trees. Couple of bunkers protecting the corner as well if you try and take it over. And as Matty’s just said, I’ve got a shot on this hole. But Matt, you can lead us away. We’ll have at least one good shot with the guys watching us. I don’t know. There’s a lot of pressure now. I feel like I’m coming down 18 like Augusta and it’s it’s all square. And uh he literally rifled one down the middle off the first. What a hit shot. Such a good hit, Matty. Thank you. I’ll bite your arm. Bit fy for me, but I’ll take it. I’ll take it. Right. Come on. Come on. Big shot. Big shot. See what he’s got. Don’t kill those magpies right there. Oh my god. All right. Wow. I better hit a provisional. That’s 17. Yeah, that’s 17. Let me go and hit a provisional quick. I don’t hit provisionals. I need to hit one there. Anti-provisionals. What would be great is if you don’t film this coming over the top and then hooking massively right into the trees and us walking on and me giving Matty the hole. The other way. Go. It’s going to hit the tree, isn’t it? Hit him. Oh. Oh, it’s bounced out to the right. Oh, members bounce. Members bounce for the guest. Back in three off the tea though, mate. Well, you’ve got that shot, so you’ll be That is true. You have got that shot, mate. Right, so we bounced out off the trees with the second shot. And unfortunately, because of that, I’ve not got around the corner. So, I’ve just got to sort of hit a wedge round the corner now. Anything too long and I’ll be blocked out for the third, well, what will be my fifth in. So, we’re just going to try and hit a wedge. And then I’ve half shanked it back into the trees. Matty, I think this might be your hole, mate. I’ve had my one hole. It’s 260 to the front of the green. Uh I’m going to probably play I’m going to obviously lay up. It’s just such a It’s such a hard as you can see. I can’t see the green from here. Uh so it’s just going to be like a probably a seven iron down there. Fizzer. Just come back off that slope. Turn should be fine, shouldn’t it, mate? It’s not long enough. You should be honest. Be be in the rough. Right. I’m going to try and just in the off chance that I hit, you know, the career fivewood of my life, which given the evidence of the last three shots on this hole, mate, that I’ve hit is not looking positive. I’m still believing in you, though. I feel like I’m going to back you. Come on. You’re going to back me? Yeah. Big dog energy. We’ve got this. No one else is backing me, mate. Not even me. There’s not one viewer watching this that’s going, “Luke’s got a chance of hitting 205 ball above his feet, tree to keep it under to a green that it’s impossible to land it on.” I think I think they should get in the comments and let us know uh exactly if they’re behind. Yay or nay as you got this under have I got this. We’re going to include anything that goes within 100 yards of the green. Yeah. Like that’s that’s how hard this difficulty is for my handicap. flushed. It is down the left, haven’t it’s going to be in the bushes. Oh, it’s kicked round to the first. We’ll be walking on, Matty. Okay, we can walk on. So, we gave Matty that hole. I think I’d had enough shots and Matty was like 80 yards off the green in two. We’ve got another really tough hole. It is a tough start here. 441 yard par three, par four, stroke index two. And I think this is where having the length that Matty’s got is an advantage because there’s a big slope. You can see the tree and the drone footage. Hope you’ve shown the first tree, the hole then slopes down massively and then back up to the green. If you can get down there, it makes the approach in a lot better, doesn’t it, Maddie? Yeah. If you can get if you can get over that that brow of the hill, you can then be left with sort like 100 yards. Yeah. So I I don’t play a driver. I play mini driver. Cool. Okay. So that’s all I’ve had for the last like six months. Yeah. And it’s been absolute game changer. I hit it probably equally as far as my driver. Yeah, it’s uh dispersion’s better. Little bit more loft. So, it’s 11 and 1/2. Yeah. Little bit longer than 3wood, little bit shorter than driver. Y just nice for me that someone who struggled with driver. Yeah. Banging. Which one of the mini drivers you got? That’s the I’ve got the Callaway um mini driver. Love it with LA sh. All my composits are all LA counterbalance. Love them. They’re just perfect. So, one of the things people probably don’t know is Matty does his own like club building business on the side. You can have a look at that on his Instagram when you check it out. So, Matty’s and he also has um he worked for Precision Golf, which you guys would have seen me do some videos at before. So, Mattie is quite a gear junkie. You see two trees, danger left, danger right, as pretty much most of all thorns is like that. Yeah. So, uh, yeah, let’s hopefully get a good drive off. Wow, it’s that little peely fade. Yeah, it should be good. Looks good, doesn’t it? Three from three, mate. Off the te. Right, I’m going to try and hit driver and just try and hit it closer to the second one than the first one. If I hit the first one, I’ll be back on that 17th hole again, just from a 90° different angle. Oh, left it. Lost it. Left. This could be a short video. Matty, it that that’s dead. That one. That’s I saw something bounce and then come down. But I don’t know if that’s my ball. Saying the matter is we’re walking off the tea there. Like one of the things with the channel is you try and keep it real. We try and keep everything in. But also that’s going to happen when you’re my style of golfer. I’m definitely struggling with my golf swing at the m saying to Matty like don’t know if this is a good day to do the filming but I think it’s real golf Matty is I think I think you like for me I’ve always been transparent even I know I’m like a I don’t like to say I’m a good golfer you are you’re off four you’re a good golfer you hit the ball well I like to show my misses my bads three stabs shank you know whatever because then it’s relatable it’s real cuz there’s so much phoniness with things that and your you know your your your journey is the weekend tour pro Yes. And if you were to not show it, it’d almost be going against what you’re what you believe in. So I think show show the good, the bad, the ugly, the great, the happiness, the highs, the lows, you know. And I do think like we’re trying to compete at the moment with people, the professional camera crews and production and all that stuff. The one that we’ve got is it’s real. It’s relatable. If it did bounce out, mate, like if it was I saw something come down, it might have been something off a tree. Was that is that not there? Is that it up there? Like it’s hit a tree and come down. He’s got lucky, mate. He’s got lucky. Look at this. I haven’t had any luck for a long time. Come on. He’s still in. He’s still in. Yeah, that is you, mate. Oh, the Wilson. Oh my god. You can see I’ve played this course a lot. Yeah. There’s a part of me like with a shot, do I just try and like hit an eight iron down there and actually be really boring? Like it’s YouTube, so I should go for it. What are you what what are you more comfortable hitting? A 220 yard shot or 220 is me absolutely buttoning fivewood. It rolls it hits 205 and rolls up. So I’ve got to hit the hero shot and get it around that tree. You got a shot. That’s what I’m saying. So just play the eight iron. Try and leave it in a pitching distance like 70 80 yards up the hill. I you know we won’t we won’t roast you too much for laying up on a par four. Who’s this? He’s one up and he’s chirping. Chap. Hey, I’ve had my little lucky moment. Let’s try and capitalize on it. A little bit thin, but it’s okay. It’s over it. It’s just going to be somewhere down that bottom of that dip, I think, mate. No, you’re on you’re on the upside. Oh, nice. On the up slope. How much of a slope we’ve come down here. You can see that tree that was in the drone footage or both the trees that are in the drone footage. Like, we are a good what, 15, 20 yards down below them. And then we’re back as I turn around and Matty get his yardage back. Similar sort of number up to the green. You probably can just about see the top of the pin from here. Look at that. Big dog energy. Big dog energy. BDE on the glove. That’s it. We were talking off camera about um like the open comps that I’ve been doing and stuff and it’s mindset has been massive at the moment trying to get my like head into a right place cuz I lead out the gate really hot. Yeah. And when I’ve got that bit where I’m pumped, I play really good golf. Yeah. Then I kind of when that when that energy goes I then get into my head. So I’ve got to feel like I’m fighting a 100 men when I play golf. Love it. And that’s kind of like I’ve got to have that, you know, that good big energy. Today you’re fighting my audience that some some of them actually like me. Oh, how how many how many thousands are we? Six and a half at the time. Okay, we’ll have them all. We’ll have them all. Right. Uh 100 yards probably more like 115 with it playing uphill. Yeah. Uh flag’s going to be frontish more middle left. Okay. So yeah, it’s just it’s you want to get it just get it up there. So sort of got 52 about dug in. That’s going to be short front right. Yeah, just a bit steep. So I’m I’m literally from about 5 yards in front of Matty can just about see the top of the pin. I’m going to try and hit pitch and wedge and just try and hopefully smooth one up there. Sit, sit, sit. No, you’ll be fine. You think that’s fine? Might be a little long. You might be on the next T- box. Yeah, definitely a little long on my part. Yours is actually very good, mate. Misjudgment of the slope from me of how much. I think if I hit a gap wedge, though, I would have been shorter than you. But right, we haven’t had a practice chip, have we? All right, this should be fun. Just um take your time. Take your time. This should be fun. Not bad. But what? Six out of 10. Five out of 10. It’s going to break to the left. My left. People want to see a birdie on stroke index two. Matty, I don’t think that’s going to happen. But if if I can get this close, I’ll be happy with a really happy with a four. Does that mean I’d have to hold that, right? Yeah. This typically a a very much one I’ve had more three stabs on than I’ve had actual fours. So, great roll. Oh, what a putt. Very good, mate. Cheers, buddy. Take that nice four golf. Right, mate. We need this for a half otherwise we’re two down through three and this could be a short match. What What are we looking for the read mate? I am like I’m a terrible green reader and now like even the fact you’re asking me that it’s making me doubt it. I had it like right edge but I’m now even stood here going I want to change it to left edge. I want to go left edge. Don’t don’t put me out like you can tell me afterwards how bad the read is. would have gone with the right edge. Yeah. Right. Next hole is an absolutely beautiful par three. 157 yds roughly off these back T’s. It is the easiest hole in the course. Stroke index 18. But that just shows how difficult this golf course is because it’s still narrow through the trees. Two-tiered green from memory. Matt looks like the pins at the back right. You do not want to miss this to the right either from memory. It’s death if you miss it right. Yeah. You’re blocked out by trees playing off a really like um dusty lie as well to be no grass. So this is this is a like the club champion. So back right tucked away in the corner. So I just try and play for middle like left side of the fairway the fairway left side of the green sorry. And just and and hope for that. And if you get I think it’s another one. It’s a good like it’s not a it’s not a scoring hole. It’s a good three. You walk away. You’ve done you’ve done well. Another good strike mate. Yeah. A bit towy, but left side of the green. It’s safe. Do you think it’s got up that slope or just at the bottom of it? I think it’s probably just at the bottom of it, but it’s a it’s a safe mess. I don’t think, mate. I feel like to get it up there, I’ve got to hit hybrid, but with how firm it is, I just fear it could run off the back where that pin’s at the back. And I know what you’re saying about trying to get it up there. I also think then the miss brings all the trouble into play. So, I’m going to try and hit six. Oh my god, skked it again. My irons are so bad at the moment. But you’ve you’ve played it through the trees. So bad. Right, mate. I’ve literally nowhere. I’ve still got like 30 yards up to this green. I’m going to just try and just like chip a pitching wedge and hope we’ll have enough run to just chase it up both the slopes and then I’ve chunked it in front of me nowhere. Brilliant. Get up there. Nice touch. That’s what I tried to do the first time with the wedge. Yeah, really happy with that, mate. That’s lovely. This is quite a hard putt now. Stunning hard. I don’t think you’ll see it, but it’s um downhill slopes massively round. Um lot of undulation on the screen, especially when you get to this point here in the green. It really really tips that down to the front. So, okay, you’re aiming to kind of stop it here and then it should feed down. Feed down. If not, there’s your feet to stop it. So, almost took a bit of a hop. Horrible hop. Go, go, go, go, go, go. Hop. Killed it. Right. I’m going to give this a lot of left to right just based on what you’ve just shown me. Raced it through it. Well done, Matty. I think this is going to be still me in it. Dead sheep. Wow. It’s a tough part. It’s a really tough part. I can’t believe how far it’s rolled past if I’m honest with you. The greens get have been set up. They’re club champs on Saturday. So, it’s in two days. So, they’re really Yeah. I didn’t realize how fast. I know you said it was fast, but that was fast. Let’s not turn back the other way. All right, mate. I think you’ve got about three putts for the match. I might need it to be fair. It’s toughy. It’s It’s going to break, but you don’t need almost need to start and let gravity do it do its job on this one. Oh my god. Oh, you saw how how barely I’d touched that and how much it lipped. Oh, well done, mate. I think we should play the Lex two on camera cuz the next one in particular is a really stunning hole. So, I just want you guys to see the elevation from this tea and why we wanted to carry on and play it. The drone footage won’t do this justice when I fire it up in a second because you won’t see how much of a drop it is, but you also won’t see it on the tracer. But you can see how narrow it is and just how stunning those views are over the back looking over Hampshire. Matt, what was that you just told me? It’s the highest t-shot in Hampshire. Is it elevation wise? There you go. Highest t-shot in Hampshire. Come here and you can tick that off your bucket list. It’s about 2 to 350, but plays probably like maybe like 50 yards shorter cuz just the elevation. So it’s quite a nice one. And you’re saying because of the like how far it is at the moment, you’re saying like even playing shorter than that to take more off it. So you I think both of us have got less club than we would have in the winter, right? So I’ve Yeah. So I’ve got my four. So in the winter typically I’ll probably hit like a like a fivewood down just because there’s a little opening in the right hand side that you if you are you miss you are right, it then lands in that which is quite nice. If you play a bit shorter then you’re going to land in the trees. Right. Uh, but with the with how firm the fairways are, we I can hit a four iron down there and it’s going to go like 260. So, it’s see it, mate. Oh, he’s toe banged it. He’s won the match and toe banged it out to the left dead. I can’t believe it. You did say you need to be fired up and have something on it and then like the match is over. You’ve given me that. Happens to the best of us. Yeah. Normally, when I’ve only ever played this course, it’s been in the winter and normally off the yellow te. So, I would normally hit driver down there and try and get as close as I can, but trusting Matty as the man that knows the course and going to take seven wood. You don’t want to be in the trees on the right, but I do feel that’s safer, Matty, to try and take the risk with them than it is to be where you just put it. No, I’m not in any right taking the mickey there at all. And then I’ve banged it massively down the right. All right. All right. Clip a tree. Yeah, you’ll be fine. Hopefully I’m not blocked out. Oh, it’s two left. Repeat. Are you getting another or you going to give me the hole? I’m going to give you the hole. Right. What’s going I don’t know. It’s not a match. You’re giving me a hole. That doesn’t count for anything. Oh, Matt. I have been terrible today. And Matty’s won the match and then just blown up a little bit on the last hole. And I just think in that as we’re driving around here, I think I’ve played this hole five times and I don’t think I’ve completed it once because it is without a doubt the narrowest par five I think in golf. And there’s a reason why it’s stroke index 4 because there doesn’t even look like a fairway down. There’s more red stakes than there is grass down there, mate. It’s so horrid. So you’ve got red stakes running along the trees on the right here. Then it stops. So then you’ve got a ditch at the end at about 2 230 240 that’s water. Uh and then you’ve got dead out of bounds all the way down the whole entire left of the hole. Yeah. You’ve then got trees running down the whole entire right of the hole. There was an internal out of bounds, but they took that out because it was too difficult. It is just it if you can get off this this tea, it is and get down there and just keep it in play, you’ve got a good five. I just said to Matty, we didn’t really finish the last hole. I I don’t think we’ll be finishing this hole based on the way you just described it. So, what are you going with, Matt? You’re playing the conservative approach for your I’ve got my two iron, but I don’t know if that I was up here Thursday, uh, two days ago, actually, sorry, Wednesday or uh Tuesday, and it was um it was it was getting very close to the ditch with my two iron. So, I think I might might have to drop back to a four soon just because it’s playing so firm. But we’ll we’ll try and get a nice one down there and hopefully I can finish the hole out. I’ll stay there. What a strike. Stay there. If it’s not gone on that car path, it’s awesome, isn’t it? Yeah, it was flushed. Yeah, absolutely brilliant. Thank you. We were just having a conversation, weren’t I don’t know if I filmed it in the end about like how I think like obviously you hit it a lot further than me, but there’s that desire when you want to hit a long way that you get to the top and you want to rush to hit that golf ball. And actually a lot of good things happen when you just give yourself the time and Yeah. My big my big swing feel for that is that it’s just just let that feeling of my arms just naturally dropping. Yeah. Before I rotate and then that and that just natural kind of allowing the club to do the work and not me. All those think swing thoughts in my head now, mate. On top of my own ones on a day that I’m not hitting it that great. I honestly if there’s a ball to be found and hit after this shot, I’ll be absolutely delighted. Yes, it’s not. Is it? It’s going right. Just turn. It’s going to be in those trees. It’s almost that thing. It’s better to be further right than it is because you’re sheltered up there. I didn’t feel the wind on my back and I’ve just smoked my my two iron probably 2 240 250 even this rough’s not stopped it has it it’s just not even stopped and it’s gone in here so I’m going to take a drop y YouTube drop oh mate my channel YouTube drop I don’t think I’ve got I don’t think I’ve got enough to get over that tree actually with this what you thinking oh I’m going to have to change club now I’m going to go under the tree five iron underneath that tree or through the V. If you hit it through the V, mate, it will make the video elite. Are you going to try it? Yeah. This could be the greatest shot that’s ever happened on my channel cuz it’s certainly not going to be one of my golf shots. Oh, he’s topped it. Try to stinger it. I found mine, but I am right behind a tree. We’re going to blame tidness. I’m going to blame the fact that I’m just a terrible golfer at the moment, mate. Just I would be careful that you’re stood there that I’ve got a Tom Hanks in me. I’m just going to pan to the left just to show where we are. Yeah. To show how far right I am.
