In this video we tackle a question every golfer with a driver in hand will ask, how high should my tee be? Or in other words, is my golf ball and tee too low or too high when I set up with my driver?

If you position your golf ball on a tee that is too low, the bottom half of your driver clubface will make contact with the ball. While you may get away with it, you will not benefit from all of the spring that you would if the ball was hit in the middle of the sweet spot. An example of a ball that is positioned too low would be where you don’t see any part of the ball above the crown of your driver head. The crown is the top part of your driver clubhead.

Conversely, if you position the ball on a tee that is too high off the ground, you risk hitting the bottom half of the ball with the top part of your clubface. You may even see your club travelling underneath the ball for a sky shot. Far from ideal.

In order to hit the ball when your driver is climbing into the air you should position the ball on a tee in such a way that half of the ball is below the crown of your driver, and half is above.

Don’t let a bad tee height get in the way of a good golf swing.

if we ask any golfer which part of their golfing game their golfing equipment their golf shots would they like to improve the most A lot of golfers will point to the big dog won’t they the driver They want to hit the driver better They want to hit the driver further They want to hit the driver straighter But actually a lot of golfers are making it difficult for themselves simply by this bit here just simply by the way they tee the ball up Now particularly depending on the type of driver you’ve got and the type of driver shots you’re hitting we can often assess that the driver teg is not going to be the right height for you So I’ve got three TEG heights here Effectively I’ve got one that’s too low one that’s too high and what I call the Goldilocks T the just right Remember the fairy tale Goldilocks Too hot too cold and just right So the bottom one here is too low I put my driver in behind it I pretty much block the golf ball from the view that you’ve got there And you can see if I was facing the camera the driver here it’s only right in the bottom half of the face That’s going to make it very difficult for me to get that ball airborne And if I do get it airborne chances are I haven’t used the middle of the club face the sweet spot of the club face The sweet spot is not down in those bottom couple of grooves So if I am hitting the ball from there it’s not activating the club as much as I would like it to and it’s going to be spinning a little bit too much One thing I want you to think about in relationship to the sweet spot is imagine a trampoline Now you’re bouncing up and down on a trampoline If you’re in the middle of the trampoline you’re bouncing nice and high and consistently You go towards the edge of the trampoline chances are you don’t bounce as high The same thing happens on your club face Hitting the sweet spot right in the middle goes a long way Bounces high Goes towards the edges doesn’t bounce as consistently And that’s the problem with that low teg we’re not hitting the sweet spot And then likewise the higher T peg here I can see more than half the ball above the top of the club face If I position it round from the front on similarly I’ve got that ball too high A lot of golfers there would drive that club down take a little bit of grass the ball would hit very high at the edge of my trampoline or even creep over onto the crown of the club Have a look at your club see if there’s any ball scratches towards the top end If there are it’s a clear indication your teg was too high and you’ve been skying the ball up in the air or you’d have been compensating and having to lift your arms up and try and hit the ball off the top of the tea The middle one there the Goldilocks TEG I’ve got that just at the right height I want to position that so it’s around about half a ball above the crown of the club So I’ve got the black lines on the golf ball there just to measure and I’ve got half the ball above the top and I can see it from that angle as well That means that when I bring the club down and don’t forget the driver shouldn’t take a divot we shouldn’t be grounding the club into the floor I might just kiss the leaves of the grass on the way through And if I was to do that with this middle ball the Goldilocks ball kissing the leaves of the grass I then get good contact in the middle of my club face on the sweet spot in the middle of my trampoline face And that’s going to help me hit the ball a lot further So we want to improve the driver Let’s make sure we’re not giving ourselves a disadvantage Let’s make sure we’ve teeded the ball up at the right height And that should help you hit the middle of your sweet spot
