This is why you’ve been stuck shooting the same score for years. You learned the wrong takeaway move off the ball. Today you will learn a new takeaway that makes great ball striking easier. It turns your golf swing into an automatic ball striking machine. It’s so much simpler than the old technique.

There’s a golf swing problem of foot. It’s causing many golfers to suffer being stuck in the 80s, 90s, and hundreds for life with their game plateauing. I’m Tom Sigudo, and I’ve helped millions of golfers all over the world play the best golf of their life through the power of a body friendly, simplified approach to the golf swing. We’re looking at taking out the crime of getting really wide in the takeaway. A lot of golfers will set up to the ball and they’ll try and push their arms away like this in the first part of their swing. As that arm keeps pushing away, the elbow stays out. So you see my elbow here is pointing away from my body, pointing away from the target. And the longer I keep this elbow out, yes, I keep the club out in front of me, but as I keep going, it gets the club very vertical and starts creating this space here. What this means for you is that that club is going to dive straight down into the ground in the down swing. So, you’re basically looking at a recipe for slicing, and that’s a huge crime. Why go through all that drama when you can just set the elbow in, get into a good position at the top automatically, and then automatically get right back to hitting the ball? And I’ve got a great drill to help you do this. This one doesn’t even require much thinking at all. We’re just going to take a glove and place it underneath our armpit area here. But before we do that, we have to get the elbow pointing down at the ground. So I stand out in front of me with my arm straight. Arms out in front of me. Elbow’s pointing at the ground. And I’m going to connect that arm to my side right there. Elbow is pointing at the ground when I’m standing up. And then when I tilt down to hit it, it’s pointing close to my bell but belly button. And as I swing back, you can see this arm isn’t rotating at all. It’s still pointing at that same spot. And you just imagine this this laser is pointing at this spot. And when you start down, keep going. Keep the laser pointed at that spot. Easily going to fix over the top slicing chunks, fats, because what happens if I lose the connection here? Elbow goes out and now my finger is pointing out there towards the camera slightly. So I’m losing where the elbow points. Elbow is always pointing in the direction of that finger which is more down towards this part of my stomach. That’s how you really ingrain the proper feeling of a takeaway. Now what’s this going to be like for a lot of you? Many of you are used to going straight back and really pushing the right arm away. So your your trail arm doesn’t fold at all. You’re neglecting this power source. So by the time you get this arm in, what’s going to feel like is it’s a little bit more bent. It might even feel like it’s folding earlier. That’s good. It’s a huge power source. So by the time you get to the first part, there’s some slight bend here. We’re not going so wide and pushing everything out far, keeping that arm from bending. It also feels really tense. It’s great to have the this arm straight. However, you got to let this arm bend all the way to the top. A bonus I want to give you while you’re working on this. Really strive to get your elbows closer together as you do your swing. You want to get the shoulders driving the swing because that’s what gets the whole body moving. But if you have breakdowns in your arms, elbows pull apart, starts leading to lifting. Oh, the hips don’t turn. Oh, the body stops turning. Oh no, what do I do? My swing’s been sabotaged by these golf swing enemies. No, it’s not that bad. There’s not a thousand things wrong with your swing. No, there’s one thing, and it’s getting the elbows close together as you maintain this connection. So, elbows close forces the shoulders to move the club around the body the entire way. Now, I’m just going to go through old takeaway versus new takeaway. I’m going to commit a golf swing crime. Don’t tell Tom Celic. If I go elbow out for a long time, that’s the natural result. I can see the path. The club is down and across. I got to be afraid not to hit that person person’s home over there. And maybe the golfer’s behind me. So, let’s keep the elbow out for a long time. Really get wide. So, that club went steeply down. If I want to make that work, I’ve got to go reroute this club. So, elbow out and then reroute just to have any chance of hitting the ball from a respectable position. However, that’s timing. We can’t afford timing in golf. No, we don’t want to spend all day practicing just perfecting timing because you’ll never perfect timing. We’re going to go with the newer, easier way. Elbows close together. And it’s a little hot out. Hope I don’t throw my glove down range, but or my club down range. We get this together. Keep the connection. Oh, that was a much more crispy strike. That was beautiful. And that was that was effortless and on the center of the face as opposed to the the other two were really on the toe. And you saw that my glove never came out. It maintains position. That means the elbow stayed in. And the shot was delicious. Can we do another one? What would Tom Celich say? Keeping it as tight as I can in there. Back through. You know what’s really strange about this? That was That was perfect again. Same spot. That’s not the strange part. No, that’s that’s going to be your new life after this. The strange part. Oh, wait. There’s right in the middle again. Strange part is the new feeling of your swing. When I go elbow out, the club goes up. So, when I go elbow in, the club travels a little bit more around it. It can feel like that club is around your hips, really low around your belt line. Can we do another one? This should be a third time you do it three time in a row. I think they start calling the cops three in a row. So, wow, that feels so good. I really am anchoring that connection point. Almost let go of my club with my sweaty hands. But once you do a few of those, put the glove back on. If you got another glove, shove it under your arm. Nice strike. What I love about these, there’s no warm-up today. It’s just a fresh patch of grass. We come out here and we just start going to town with it. Now, if you’re somebody who is stuck in the 80s, 90s, and hundreds, you don’t have to be stuck there forever. I expect some form of royalties if it does well in theaters, Tom. https://i.imgflip.com/9zo3mh.jpg
Thanks Tom
getting wide helps generate speed, wouldnt say getting wide is a crime
This is really sound advice. Are you using the same technique with driver and fairway woods?
Hi Tom, whatever I do in the backswing I seem to always grip the club with my trail hand in the downswing resulting in chopping, flipping and holding back the swing. My right arm is very dominant, maybe this is the reason. Do you have any tip how to mitigate this? Thanks for a very helpful channel!
10:4!! “Life is too short to play bad golf”
No, No double No. if you play golf for fun, ok. But if you’re serious about the game and the decision you make with it. Get wide. Buy Tigers book from the year 2000. Being a player who would show up on Mondays to qualify for the old Nation Wide Tour Events. Who eventually moved to Europe and played in the Mideast. Get wide. Tigers swing in Golf in the year 2000 was the best swing in golf in the years of the 2000’s. Michell Wie’s father used to carry the swing photo break down in his wallet. I played behind Tiger about a dozen times in College, the Navy Course in Long Beach and one day at Dad Miller’s . The wide stance just about 4 inches from the outside of your shoulders. Placing the ball in front of your left foot about 6 inches out is going to make you believe in god. Struggling to make money. I bought Tigers Book, an old Video camera and got lost at the end of the range and talked to know one. First, this is going to hurt. But not for to long and transitioning from Driver to 5 iron and then to your gap wages is going to take time. Stick with it. Slowly, you will start to see, incredible distance, your ball flight will be 2 to 3 times higher than before dropping your mid irons like pillows. Your control will dramatically turn around and curving your shots left or right will be so fun. That your inherent T-Shot into the ruff will almost make you giddy with excitement. No matter what I did -16 to qualify to get my card. I just couldn’t get it and I was playing good golf. Finally a friend said this is BS let’s go play in Europe and Asia and eventually the Mideast. What was the nail in the coffin was one day at the Navy course, Tiger rolled up and the starter said that young man over there is very good, you might want to join him. In typical Tiger fashion he said no and I want a hole between us. Watching him on this windy day in Long Beach his mid iron play was stunning and from that day forward I’ve never looked back. Jack’s swing in the mid 70’s was very good, but Tigers swing in the 2000’s was simply the best swing in golf.
I want to send you a pic of a training aid I made to feel the swing circle! I made it out of led and it’s like a big hula hoop!!!
stache is looking really dialed in good for you
Hey Tom big fan of your videos! I just discovered your page and am starting to implement it into my practices. One thing I have struggled with for some time now is finding a consistent low point. I tend to hit fat shots more than thin shots when I miss hit. Any tips or if you could point me in a direction to watch some videos it would be greatly appreciated! Again, I appreciate your videos and also your approach to swing advice!
Thanks for another great video. Has anyone told you that you look like a Rhode Island State Trooper. #memyselfandirene 😂
Tom i can shoot 83 one day,and 106 the next,I'm 65 been playing a long time,i have a homemade swing learned by swinging a weed whip from working on golf courses in the 70s,no weed eaters then, can you help,I was killing my driver today with my interpretation of the s and t swing, irons not so good, pull hooks,I am stumped.
Great video , worked for me with irons. 3 wood and driver was harder thoe
The Saguto Slinger… lol
Totally agree. There are some great players who swing that way but most of us can’t. Back in the day this used to be standard golf instruction aka “maintain the triangle for as long as possible”.
Another good one. Great work. Tom, I need your expert opinion and help please on my downswing issue. As I make contact with the ball, my arms break down, and I can't keep them straight even if i manually try to do so, as a result I lose power and distance as you know. My backswing is fine, I connect both arms to my body, tuck my right arm in, I'm on plain in the takeaway and club is square at the top. My technique for the downswing is like I'm doing a bounce pass forward which I learnt from one of your previous videos and it's a real good one and helped a lot. Many thanks. Keep up the good work.
I'll take a shorter, controlled swing with plenty of power for 700 Tom…
The stache is back 🤤
Your arms are too long for golf, Saguto.
Gonna' be working on this one ! You have done more to help my game than anyone else. Thanks Tom .
Hey Tom, I’d like to hear your take on the 10 finger grip vs interlock/overlap. As someone who played interlock for years, I recently switched to ten finger just to try to out, and I’m hitting the ball farther and more consistently than ever. Do the interlock and overlap grips actually make any logical sense?
My guy looks like he just hopped off an episode of Chips …
TOM YOU ARE SIMPLY THE BEST!!!
Tom can you do this drill with your woods as well? Same concept?
I don't like your abbreviated follow through. Most Pro golfers do not swing like that on a full shot. Unless you are Tommy Fleetwood who hasn't won jack on the PGA tour
Tom is my favorite on line instructor. After figuring out that I had no idea how to really hit a golf ball and many lessons focused on "club path", I decided to start from scratch and learn to hit a golf ball as if I never played before. Tom's genius is to break down the golf sing into simple steps to BUILD upon and get your swing more consistent. Through Tom, I undestand the "athleticicsm" in the golf swing, versus just how the club is supposed to go. this elbow tuck and the lead shoulder "mmmmmmm, Drrrrrrrop!" (Ad Rock beastie Boys) made such a HUGE difference – I finally understood what my body was supposed to do so the proper club path can happen. Dropped from averaging 125 (yes, really) to high 90s. And this is in VT, where courses are built into mountains. Your shot is either in the fairway or down the side of the mountain.
Hi Tom great video, this did work great on my irons but on Woods it was too uptight and limiting. Can you make a video explaining the same concept on Woods too ? if at all it works on woods?
All that’s missing is the tooth pick.
For a second there I thought he was gonna say Tom Selleck. 😂 thanks Tom.
I am 74 and I have been using your method and for the first time in 10 years I shot a 88. It works
Tom, as a member of your online golf group, I am a devoted follower of your video lessons, and I particularly loved this one. I have been aware of this, but focused on it at the range yesterday, and it was gold! I tend to get lost on my backswing, particularly with the longer clubs, and this felt so solid. I was striping my shots with crispy contact. Looking forward to taking this out to the course.
Tom…might suggest folks to use the SUN to their advantage…meaning your SHADOW can help you see where the club is going if you set your practice up to see the shadow…whether it be using a Video on ones phone, or just watching each step…and…its FREE…as long as you have sunshine…instant feedback….
Tom but how do get your”palms down “ if you set up with palms facing up? That’s the part I don’t understand. I thought if you continue with palms up that you would be seeing a slice. Thank you
