Former Open champion Franchesco Molinari is hoping to repraise his role as a Rder Cup vice captain later this year, but the call from team Euro captain Luke Donald hasn’t come just yet. The 42-year-old Italian was a key figure in Donald’s support staff during Europe’s dominant win at Marco Simone Golf Club in 2023. But with the 2025 Rder Cup at Beth Page Blackfast approaching, Molinari’s name has yet to appear among the confirmed vice dash captains. So OAR, three vice captains have been announced. Eduardo Molinari, Francesco’s brother and stats guru, Thomas Bjorn, and Joseé Maria Olazabel. And while Franchesco hasn’t secured his place on the team just yet, he’s made his interest clear. I’d love to be involved, Molinari told Bunkered C at UK during the Genesis Scottish Open. I had a great time in Rome with Luke, my brother Thomas Bjorn, all the guys who are already confirmed. We’ll see. It’s Luke’s decision at the end of the day. Molinari praised Donald’s leadership during the 2023 Rder Cup, particularly how he managed a mix of personalities behind the scenes. Luke did a great job of organizing everything. It’s always a tough challenge, especially going to the US, but it was a really strong group. I’ve spoken to Luke. He knows I’m interested, but there are only a couple of spots left and plenty of guys who want to be involved. So, I’m not taking anything for granted, even if he isn’t selected. Molinari says he’ll still back team Europe in what’s expected to be a fiery showdown in New York. Europe hasn’t won on US soil since 2012 at Medina and suffered crushing losses in 2016 at Hazeline and 2021 at Whistling Straits. With just weeks remaining in the qualification window set to close after the British Masters from August 21st to 24th, only Rory Mroy has mathematically secured his place on the squad. Donald faces a tough selection process as several players are currently peaking. Molinari however remains optimistic about Europe’s form heading into the banial battle. It’s been a really strong season for a lot of the guys. He said the top players are in good form and a few new names are starting to push through. There are definitely some positive signs. Whether as a vice captain or a supporter, Molinari is set to play a role one way or another as Europe prepares to defend its crown on hostile American turf.
