7 Wood or 5 Wood?
What is the perfect fairway wood to compliment your set make up and which type of golfer should prioritize the stronger lofted 5 wood over the 7 wood?
This #tourtrucktuesday upload will reveal all and demonstrate the true differences between two lofted fairway wood options.
I will break down the course types that suit each club. Deep dive into tour player examples where both have been relevant and show a partial tendency towards one for my own game.

Sevenwood versus fivewood. Who uses what? How good are these seven woods? Can you make them do absolutely everything that it makes your fivewood have no place in the bag at all? This video is going to explain it all. Whether you’re a great player who plays tournament golf courses where you need to land, whether you’re someone who plays those members courses at 6,500 to maybe 72 off the back tease, you might have a gap. But what do you do to make the choice as to which one of these two you’re going to play? And then of course, if you’re the amateur looking to get better, is the sevenwood really going to give you more value over the fivewood, or do you need both? This video’s got it all. Be sure to subscribe and get in the comments with any questions you’ve got if I didn’t answer them all during the video. The fivewood versus. Now, let’s be honest, this needs a drum roll. This needs some serious love. This is a golf club that I thought I would never ever have in the bag and I’m standing here about to make a video of a comparison of it. It might even be my favorite club in the bag. And this is the sevenwood. What a golf club this is. Now, let’s explain how you choose between these two and if one of them can do the job of all. Let’s get into it. Okay, so first things first, we need Willie one tile on the full swing. Yeah, I might talk a bit about spin rates. You know what I’m like, but I’m going to lay down a sevenwood for you. Just a nice cruisy one. We’re into the breeze a little bit here. If any complaint about this club, I’ll say it afterwards actually so it doesn’t get angry with me. If any complaint about this golf club, it might be that it goes a little high and into breeze like this. That was only 5,000 on the spin. see if I can flight one a bit more for you, which you can. Of course you can. With a sevenwood, you can do absolutely anything you like. These things are unbelievable. If you haven’t got one yet, get one. So, that would be a bit better. Face maybe a hair open. Let’s see what the spin rate’s like on that. But the most important number, yeah, 4,900. So, 4,900. 5,000. That is spin rate. It is going around about the 230 mark for me, which is great. No problem. Launching at 10. All good stuff. We all enjoy it. 230 is the number today. Just cruising it. Now, let’s take a look at the fivewood. Differences between the two first are going to be shaft length, which will come into play later in this video. Just a hair. I thought my seven was a bit shorter than that. It’s clearly not. But if we go fivewood, 230, the number, even looking down, this one’s a bit angrier. There’s a bit less loft. It’s a loft sleeve on there, so sits a little bit more upright for me. Just cruisy. We’re not killing these. Big difference though. Height, apex. That was a little pull. 4,000 spin. It’s gone that 10 yards further. Okay, no problem. Now, let’s get into all shots. Let’s take a look at the differences we’ve got here between Apex 97 on the 7wood and then I go into the fivewood came out about 10 ft lower. So, it’s a big difference because it’s 10 yards. So, there you go. Is that the end of the video? No, because what else do we need to cover on all this? I’ve made the whole golf bag. And this is what I want you to do when you consider a 7wood or a 5wood around your wedges. Believe it or not, I carry three wedges. 60, 56, and a 52. Then I get into my pitching wedge. So, you could argue that’s four. It’s a lot of wedges, right? A lot of short game clubs. The way the three and the four irons are now, I’ve got a 774 iron that gives me a decent yardage. It would probably go into this breeze today, 215ish. So then you’ve got that gap that gets you into the sevenwood. Then I have another gap between 3-wood and 7wood. Well, guess what? That’s where this would fit perfectly. But you’re then going to be left with a gap between fivewood and long iron. Unless, of course, like I said, at the top of that breakdown, you drop one of those wedges. I mean, Tiger’s only going what’s he 60 56 when we did the Watts in the bag. Then he jumps down to a pitching wedge. But I’ll be honest, Tiger’s skill set when it comes to controlling that pitching wedge is one of the best in the world. When it comes to getting a bit more out the 56, one of the best in the world. So, he’s getting his pitching wedge in his 56 to do a lot of work. Whereas for me on the type of golf courses I’m playing, which is probably more comparable to the type of golf courses you’re playing, those members courses that range between 6,500 and 7200. If you go for the back TE’s, those wedges are important. You got to look at the par fives and without doubt, I do it all the time. There’s definitely a par five where I tend to play a lot of golf. I could do with the fivewood, but I have the confidence that if needed, I can chop up and cut the 3-wood based on my level of golfer. So based on the level of golfer, everything I’ve just said there is probably going to answer majority of people’s questions because at the end of the day, you can make this do so much. And the reason you can make it do so much, the sevenwood, this is with the red shaft, is because you can get closer to the ball cuz the shaft’s shorter. You can grip it down. You can punch down on it and flight one if you really need to. I mean, that’s low. Then if you want to, and again this is just confidence with this golf club. If you want to hit a big high fade sevenwood, which in today’s wind will be really funny to see. It’s just so easy to do and you can hit so many different yardages. You can get it out of so many like there’s the divot. Put the ball back. Remember the shaft’s shorter. But look how it just powers through the divot. And yeah, this leading edge gets caught, but it comes out of the turf. And that is the benefit of having that extra loft with the back CG cuz it’s a wood, so the center of gravity is further back. But you have to get into a place where I don’t think I could challenge the fivewood to do those things. I certainly couldn’t chop enough spin onto the fivewood or flight the fivewood and take the distance out to give me everything the seven does. The sevenwood for me and I think for a majority of people watching this is just that little bit more that you can do. And as I’ve thought more and more about this, I think it’s because nowadays 7wood’s 21, fivewood’s 18. You know, we’re not going too far back in time that a fivewood was 21 and a 4 was 18. So, I really think there’s been a bit of a shift where fivewoods used to be super popular going back even earlier than my time. You know, going back when you would see your dad’s clubs or your granddad’s clubs and you’d have the fivewood in there if you had family members that old that played. There was a lot of fivewoods. But I think it’s cuz the fivewoods were being labeled, which today has become the sevenwood, which I think the sevenwood is part of the reason why it’s so so popular. So again, getting back into this fivewood. I probably want to cut it shorter than this. Can you flight it as easy and then take some yardage off? You can, but just look at it. It’s a rocket ship. It’s just the loft on it is just that bit too strong to give you just too much yardage. Let’s see if we can soften the flight as easy as we did that seven would. So think about a par three, a long par three. hard to do. I mean, that was towed and it’s not drawn on me. That would be coming down in Arizona for my par three that I’m playing in California. And there’s the same deal. It’s just hard to control, right? They’ve both gone left. They both double crossed on me. I could stand here all month with a sevenwood. That ain’t going to happen. And that’s what the danger is when you get a club that is just a little strong for the job you’re trying to get it to do. not as beneficial out the rough, not as easy to hit out the traps, not as useful around the greens. It comes back to what potentially is my favorite club of all time, which is the sevenwood. Now, let’s talk a bit before we wrap this up about a how difficult it is for me to get golf balls out of the bag today, but also b how I want you to set up your seven woods. If you’ve not seen my sevenwood video, it’s a good one to watch. Remember I said to you the length is one thing. This is stock from the kingdom. It’s a little long for me. the weight if you’ve got some speed. I play I think 110 in the irons then I go 80 grams in this tip 2 in. I’ve bent the lie angle quite flat and it really has become one of the best golf clubs I can use. Inspired by the tour guys using them. Everyone really is putting in seven woods. I know Tommy Fleetwood led the charge. You’ve had Scotty Sheffler putting one in. Rory’s toyed around with it. DJ’s toying around with it from week to week. Depends where we’re at. a lot of players that aren’t under tailor made contracts putting seven woods in. It’s just become a great club for par threes because of the height and the descent angle. It’s come a great club to get you out of trouble. It’s come a great club to shape. It spins not as much as your rescue. So, you got to keep an eye on that if you love a rescue, but it’s a bit more versatile when you get in those poor lies and you need to smash and gouge yourself out and get it going. If you haven’t got on the sevenwood bandwagon, as you can tell, I’m a huge fan. I really do think this is something you got to check out. Yeah, I love ninewoods. A fivewood does have a place on certain golf courses, but if I was playing week to week on different tracks, I’d carry them both and put one in dependent on where I’m at. And I guarantee you, I’d stand over on that first par five needing seven wood into the green instead of fivewood and I’d be cursing myself out because it would be in my locker room rather than in my golf bag. So, I came to the conclusion then I can just do so much more with the sevenwood. Rely on it that bit more and flight it when needed that it became the perfect tool. Highly, highly recommend checking one of these out, taking the time to go through a fitting process and get the right one for your game. Yes, fivewood’s okay. Right place, right time. So, there you have it. It’s very difficult for me to get off this sevenwood. I love it. It’s been a great golf club. I can do a lot with it. Well, fivewoods do have a place, but honestly, it really does have to be influenced by your golf bag and your setup. How well do you hit the long irons? How many wedges do you need? Are you great with wedges that you could maybe take one out? Because at the end of the day, you probably hit that fourth or third wedge more often than you do that sevenwood. It’s a great club for unique situations where you need it, but the fivewood’s in the same house. If you’re looking for one club to do both jobs, and for me, I can just do more with that sevenwood than I can with the five. But you got to make the decisions for yourself. You got to get on the tea. You got to get in the rough. You got to get out the bunker. And you’ve got to play around with the length and getting this thing perfectly made for your game. Get a fitting. Once you do that, you’ll soon know which one is the clear leader. [Music]

I have a 7 wood now and it is great and so versatile, far better than my 5 wood, like the idea of changing it around.👍
Triple diamond
R7 13.5
Zxi 5w
Ds adapt 7 w
Tour ad or BGT shaft
Why a 7 wood instead of a hybrid?
I was fitted for one a couple of years ago and I love it. The 5 wood was too strong for the gap between 4 iron and 3 wood. It also goes 120 ft up in the air which is super handy for hitting over trees when I’m a bit wild off the tee 😅
Driver,5,7,9 wood! Eleven Golf hybrid irons.
The world #1 put the 7w in his bag….
doesn't the 4i usually get replaced by the 7w in most bags?
Driver 10.5° and 5w 20.5° all I need. After that it's 4 hybrid 22° then a 5 iron 23.5°🎉 🍻
👑
😎
🙏
No ego here. I’m gaming mini driver, 5 wood, 7 wood, 9 wood. No 4 iron or 3 wood and I don’t get along with hybrids. All I really need. I’m hitting fairways and scoring.
My top end is Driver, Mini Driver, 4 Wood and 7 wood. Also did you ever get my email?
Exactly the video I need. Current set up, Driver 7W, irons. Trying to decide if I should buy a three wood or a five wood. Consistently hit the seven wood 220+. 5W would get me to 245 to 250 for longer holes. Driver 260-280. Taylormade 7W has given me the best shots of my life. Playing from middle tees.
Trottie remember tiger played weak lofts
His pitching wedge loft is 52°
Trottie, ( love Dope Stroke BTW) have noticed that you favor the Core Models on these video. Is this more because of access to Lie / Loft adjustments? Or are you seeing more benefit in bonded with consistent spin? I have favored the Tour ( Qi10 3W /5W + Qi35 7W) to allow more self adjustment. Was however fitted into the Qi10 Tours. Thanks
I have 18 clubs in the bag 🤦♂️
I am Driver , 3 wood , 3 hybrid , 4i -P , 52,56,60 . Our courses are all under 7000 yards short par 5s so bang the driver 300 yards and then work on the approach.
Good stuff, Trottie Fleetwood! I have had Driver, 16.5* 4W, and 21^ 7W at the top of my bag for over 15 years, and it works a treat for me.
Dr, 2hy, 7w(turned down to 6w), 9w, 5hy. About 3-3.5 degrees and .75-1.5 inches between each club. Give about 12-15 yard gaps between each club
Driver, 4-wood/3-HL, 7-wood FTW!
Currently playing driver, 5wood, 4h, 5-GW, 54,58. That’s 13 clubs with putter. What should I add to my bag?
I carry both
I go from driver to a 7 wood head with a 3 wood shaft. Fitter said I needed more carry which ended up giving me more distance
I can’t hit driver straight or long irons, but hit 3 wood just as far and woods super straight. so 3,5,7,9 woods, 4,6-9 irons, 46,50,54 and 58 wedges. So much versatility and the 4 iron is great for punching out of trees.
I’ve been playing a 5w after 20 years of 3 iron. It’s been a revelation! I may consider getting a 7 wood because of how much I love hitting the 5w, and I don’t get very many chances to use it. The 7 wood could bridge the gap between my 3W (16.5 degree) and my 5 iron, and allow me to put another wedge in the bag. Right now I have a driving iron and 5w, that never seem to be the right club, and I need a second gap wedge due to the crazy lofts of today’s iron sets.
60 54 48 9 iron, would be a great bottom bag set up to consider.
58 52 46 is another option. Will depend on your 9 iron loft.
I struggle with long irons so love the 5w 3hyb combo. 5w carries 230 goes high and lands soft.but the 3hyb is a dream from the rough 200-210 carry and stops on greens. Love the content from the onion master!
I switched from 2 iron to a qi35 tour 7 wood. My home course is a heathland and its amazing for there.
How about both?
Hi Trottie and thanks. Really interesting question. What do you suggest for gaps in fairways?
I’m from the 21 degrees is a 5 wood era .
Seriously thinking of playing 9degree driver , 11.5 Brnr Copper mini with heavy weight at front 17.5 degree 5 wood (4wood😂) and 20.5 degree 7 wood (5woood😂).
I also have a 22 degree 4 hybrid which gaps a full club on the 7 wood.
I’m a big believer in the squad concept even around local courses there are big differences in characteristics and how the wind affects them never mind the British summer, fairways brown etc.
Even my home course plays different depending on wind and I’m very inland.
Really sorry but only TM club is the MD and it’s probably killed off me ever using 3 wood (though I do have a couple of amazing TM models of them for differing reasons ).
I game a QI10 3 and 7 wood and a stealth 2 titanium 5 wood no driver unless I'm on a big course then I've got the burner mini driver or my ping 430 max 10k all great options in my opinion
No 3w
4 w -7 w – 5 h
5 iron down …
Makes a good setup for me
I'm D-4W-7W-4I……….works for me, gaps are right
I have an internal struggle with the 7 wood. My favorite club to hit but I can’t get rid of the 4i without feeling off on the course. I play Drive, 3w, 5 or 7 wood depending on wind conditions of the day. Then 4i-60.
I actually just got a QI35 5 wood and took out the 3 wood this week. It’s about a 260 club for me and that’s absolutely perfect for the courses around here. Had 260 on one of the longer par 5’s yesterday and it went exactly pin high. 3 wood I just don’t need it off the turf much with my driver length and I need those extra wedges so I got the 5 in took the 3 out
The answer I found to this was to play 3HL and then 7 wood. Gapping is pretty decent and the 3HL is way easier to hit and more versatile.
Problem for us amateurs is, it’s hard to get these off the shelf or second hand with anything stiffer than regular shaft. Majority of 7 woods I see have senior or regular flex.
Ping solved this problem with the g440 4 wood 😂
I would use a Tiger Wood
remember the thing:
Is your game in the woods consistant enough to actualy hunt for greens with a 5wood and a 3/4 iron? then get that 5wood.
Is your game bad enough that you sometimes need a club that can recover you from the rough into the fairway 100 yards forward? then 7/heaven/9wood is the choice.
Sometimes its even better to drop the 4 iron and get a heavenwood if you cannot consistantly hit the 4 iron past the 5 iron due to how hard a 3/4 iron is to play.
