i’m going to read this 10-ft putt and hole it using the ego screen reading method that I’ve been using and teaching now tour pros take about a minute and a half to two minutes to read this putt and they hold it 40% of the time for me it’s see the line roll the line no edits no second takes that’s the power of a real green read now stick with me and I’m going to show you exactly how I saw that line and how you can too now I’m going to show you exactly what I do to see that line so fast and no it’s not plumb bobbing i know when you see somebody hold their putter out in front of their face like this you immediately think it’s plumb bobbing i don’t want to argue with you over that and the comments are back and forth it’s significantly different from plumb bobbing the only similarity is I’m using my putter adjusted and calibrated to get a straight vertical line that’s it this method is called EOS expert green reading operating system it was created and invented by Andrew Walters a surveyor and engineer and actually Andy gave me the idea for this video but here’s what I see and the mental snapshot and picture that I create of that line when I’m putting this is the 11th video that I’ve done on this screen reading system over the last five months there’s a playlist of those in the video description so you can get the concept the math the how to stand the where to stand how to hold your putter how to calibrate your putter all of that covered i just wanted to do a quick refresher video so this is a speed square this angle here between the flat bottom and the straight side this angle is 90° which means if I set the speed square on a level surface this 90° angle this will be straight up and down this will be straight horizontal now if I set it on a slope surface the 90° angle never changes but the lines change so what I’m doing when I go out on the green and use this method is I’m using my body to recreate this speed square my feet spread wide represent the base of it and I’m at the ball and then this line is represented by my spine if I’m just standing here normally then there’s a 90 degree angle between my feet and my spine and then if you’ll notice if I put this speed square against a wall or something like this built-in TV cabinet in my home you’ll notice that it’s not perfectly square it’s off and there’s a gap at the top well what I’m doing when I go out on the golf course is I’m looking at that getting my eye aligned with my spine using my putter which I’ve calibrated and know how to hold it so that’s a straight vertical line and it represents like the wall and I can tell there’s a gap between the hole and my putter shaft and just like I see that gap between the top of the speed square and the wall I see a gap between my putter shaft and the hole and that tells me that I’m standing on some slope but I take a mental picture of that gap when I’m reading a green let me show you right now what that looks like so when I set up on the green hold my putter up and take that reading I’m looking for that gap once I see that gap now I know exactly where to aim some of you say “Oh that works great if the slope between you and the and the hole is consistent but what if it’s not a consistent slope or it’s a double breaker?” Well let’s talk about that to deal with that you have to understand calibration so I take a reading and I get a mental picture or a mental snapshot in my mind of the amount of gap that gap is not necessarily the start line for the putt that’s because the speed of the greens change every day based on the mowing and on the weather conditions and on the course and on the type of grass all kinds of variables so what I do is I take about five minutes on the practice screen before I play and calibrate where to aim relative to the gap I see and it’s really simple it’s either a one gap a two gap a three or a four gap day let me show you what I mean by that right now so when I take a green read on this putt I hold my putter up i see the gap right here and I’ve put a T in the ground to indicate that gap now that is not my starting line that’s just the gap that I see i’m going to illustrate for you that gap with this alignment rod now let’s say this alignment rod is the straight line from my ball to the hole and I hold my putter up in front of me the lower end of the putter shaft is on that straight line and if I’m holding my putter true vertical the top end where I holding my hands is here at that gap so I put a T there now out on the course I can’t set up a T like that but on the practice range I can so on the practice screen before I play I read the putt and I see this first T for the gap and I’ve illustrated that with the alignment rod being the straight line the bottom of my putter shaft is on that when I hold it up on along that straight line and I hold my putter true vertical the top goes right here and I mark that with this first T that’s the gap that I see but that gap is not the aiming point so I put another T the same exact distance from the center of the pin and then a third T again that much more and then a fourth T so that represents the gap i see one two gaps three gaps four gaps and then on the practice screen I put a T in the ground to mark where my ball is and I roll that putt and I’m going to roll one putt at the first gap second gap third gap and fourth gap and again remember the gaps are the four T’s that I’ve stuck in the ground beside the hole and now I roll a putt at that second T and it goes in the hole so now I know out on the course all day i take a read snap a mental picture of that gap and then add exactly that much more it’s a two gap day for this green speed and you say “Oh that’s great but now how do we use that if it’s a multiple slope or a changing slope or uphill or downhill?” Let’s talk about that so I’ve taken a read from my ball to the hole and set up my four gaps now I’m going to do just the opposite take a read from the hole back to the ball so I’ve got a putt that I think might be a double breaker or might have a changing slope i’m going to take a second reading from the hole back to my ball and let’s just see what we get and sure enough in this instance the gap is a little bit different for instance I see the gap as right here against the ball so that’s less gap than what I have down here that would mean the gap would be just inside the hole now what that tells me is the ground that I’m standing on at the hole slopes less than the ground up there where the ball is so in this instance the putt breaks more up there and then it stops breaking and flattens out a lot as it gets near the hole what does that mean well that means I give it less break because down here near the hole it’s going slower so today instead of a two gap on this putt that has multiple break I would reduce it by one and aim here just outside the hole and make it a one gap break and if I saw the putt breaking more up there at the hole when I was reading from the hole back to the ball then I would add a gap instead of two I would make it three and if it’s a serious downhill putt I might add another gap because I’m going to roll the ball a little bit softer and it’ll be going slower and breaking more so if this were a huge downhill putt I might make it a four gap day and you can even get good enough at this when you look from the hole back to the ball and you see that the break is different maybe it’s a half of a gap instead of a whole gap more or less you can adjust it and fine-tune it that much here I adjusted from two gaps down to one because if you notice the putt actually breaks back the opposite direction at the end so to make it easier for you I’ve set up four T’s at the ball just like I did at the hole so I’m reading from the hole back to the ball if top of my putter shaft were here that’s the same exact gap that we have at the hole we’d be done i’d know that the break is consistent but in this instance the top of the putter shaft is here right on the edge of the ball so now I know that this putt breaks a lot at the beginning but less at the hole so now I’m almost a whole gap less i would reduce one gap from my green read and so I’d aim it at the first T by the hole instead of the second 15footer it’s downhill so instead of two gaps I’m going to aim three but I also read it from the hole back to the ball and it breaks more near the hole so I’m going to start it at the fourth gap and look at that those are quick easy adjustments that you can make when you have a multiple breaking putt the next video on this subject we’re going to do a long 50-foot putt with multiple brakes and walk through how to do that so this was just a quick video to remind you that you can learn to gre read greens both very fast and very accurate and handle double breakers and all the changing slopes and undulations with a little bit of training and practice the good news is I’ve got all the other videos on that that we mention on the channel that you can watch the even better news is that exactly two weeks from today we’re going live with a course on this method it’ll be a super inexpensively priced course it’ll go step by step through how to do this method and use this method answer all your questions it’ll include all the video and training that I have on YouTube already and several new ones and even a stepbystep cheat sheet that you can take out on the course with you so that you know that you’re going through the procedure the right way and getting the greens the green reads right few quick things to do if you feel like you got any value out of this video obviously give it a thumbs up share it with a friend put your comment or question below subscribe to the channel check out this video on the screen now check out the links for Andy’s books on the ego screen reading method look at the playlist for the other 10 videos I’ve done teaching this method stick with us for the next two weeks when we launch that course that’s going to be super helpful to giving you fast easy green reads at an incredible value you won’t believe how little we’re going to charge for all this information and help till next time here’s to you making more pots [Music]

  1. If you want to read greens faster and more accurately, check out the EGOS Green Reading System — the method I used in this video.
Let me know in the comments: What’s the hardest part of green reading for you?

  2. Hello. Am I right in thinking the actual gap is worked out by in effect REVERSING plumb bobbi to assess the break? In other words, assess the gap by putting the bottom of the putter shaft on the ball rather than the hole? I may be confused and may well buy your complete course when it comes through🤦‍♂️👍

  3. It is a great technique – I do practice it and I find the hardest thing is making sure my spine angle is correct – perpendicular to the ground. I have had a few where it was a borderline slope and I must have had spine angle incorrect, as the read was on the wrong side of the hole. Important then to make sure your feet are wide and don't get lazy with that by having narrow feet over the ball. You are not going to make all the putts in any event, but I have found my speed control has improved by having a more accurate line to start on.

  4. I have purchased the books and like this method. I do have a question. What do you do if it is windy? I find that the wind can affect the read.

  5. I am intrigued by this method and intend to give it a serious tryout. One thing: while I like your method of assessing green speed, greens are going to change throughout the day as they warm up or dry out and the grass grain on the various greens will always be different; the speed that you determine on the practice area isn't going to be the same for the entire round. Still, I think you describe a good place to start and adjust as conditions change.

  6. I’ve been using this method for about a month, and WoW does it help. I recently played in a 4-man scramble event, and it was surprising how often my read differed from the group think…. And how often my read was more accurate. This is a GREAT method… fast and accurate. Now about my speed control………

  7. I’ve been trying to make this system work for months now and I still can see the line when I hold my putter up. I’ve calibrated my putter against the corner of a wall but I still can’t see it when I’m reading putts. With my feet spread wide apart and I turn my head and put my dominant eye on my spin angle. It always comes back right to left no matter how it actually break breaks.

  8. Watched one you videos about 3 weeks ago and since watched all of them. This stuff 100% works! So easy to do.. and quick!! Its math and geometry.. not feel or preference like most "golf tips." The only thing that is left up to you is how many "gaps" do I add due to the conditions of the putt… and lastly, speed control!

I would tell anyone who tries this one time and gives up just keep practicing. You most likely are doing it wrong somewhere, somehow because this works for everyone IF you setup right. I got a little screwed up when I first started and was thinkin… "boy, idk about this!" ha – My only confusion right at first was "the gaps". I was thinking initially – aiming "3 gaps" outside the gap you see – meant find the gap first with your eye/putter, then add this standardized gap size that the EGOS method determined on top of that. As in adding "one gap" or "two gaps" is the same measurement every single time. This video you were clear (and probably the first one to and I just missed it) but – whatever gap you see initially with your eye- use THAT gap (that changes with every putt you read – this is not a standardized measurement) and either double, triple, etc.. it. Which makes total sense I just missed it for whatever reason. My first couple reads where way off and I knew immediately I was doing something wrong!

oh and make sure your putter hangs level!

Thank you for sharing this quick system. And if your not perfect… you are ball park close and this will lead to more 2 putts with easy tap ins. Take the feel out of it and give yourself a tangible starting line backed up by real math.

  9. Great video! Looking forward to the course! Will go watch the playlist so I can try this out.

  10. I just don't get it. I spread out like you say, center the lower end of the shaft over the ball, turn my right eye so it's centered on my spine I think, then all i see is the shaft hiding the hole ⛳
