Are the Callaway Opus wedges the best wedge they have ever made? Well, their name would lead you to believe it, so I’m going to test them out and see what these golf clubs are all about.

where Artistry meets Innovation this is the Callaway Opus I mean that’s a that’s a big claim because if you’re familiar with with music composition what have you Opus is often referred to as an artist composer’s greatest work so Callaway by naming these wedges Opus they’re claiming these are the greatest wedges they’ve ever made so in today’s video test that out round the greens on the course get the numbers and just see if these wedges live up to their names sake Opus so the Opus wedge in all the marketing they’re leaning heavily on like the read design to the look of this thing from a few years of Jaws raw they lean really heavily on like a tour proven look and design and I got to agree the design the look is really really good it looks really really tour looks really really player got to give them full marks there the Jaws raw looked good these look so much better and this is the second time that I’ve tested Callaway wedges I tested Jaws raw last year and I really liked them but I chose the wrong grind that’s the difficult thing I find with kind of picking a wedge I got to pick the right grind and I didn’t pick the right grind for the 60 in particular it was good for testing but then when I tried to play with it it just let me down so I couldn’t keep it in the bag so this time around of the five grinds to choose from I tried to pick a little bit better so in the 60° I opted for a sea grind and if I’m honest you’re kind of guessing blindly based on what the website suggests with grinds without having getting a fit you are guessing but the this is is meant for the most versatility around the green and I like to open the face up I like to get creative with it I like to look down at a really flat Lane open face and this does look pretty good I’m used to a little more bounce in the Leading Edge I prefer a little more bounce in the Leading Edge but this thing still looks really good laying it flat how does it how does it interact with the turf yeah that was awesome and that spin gen face I mean they’re brand new w is that felt good that felt like it ripped the cover off of it little short but man that Glides underneath really really well so even though I’m kind of guessing on my grind with an online order without doing a custom fit that se grind I think it’s going to check my boxes cuz there a little heavy the bounce saved me a lot that was that was good for a total Duff and then in 56 and 52 I went with s which is kind of their standard everyday grind it’s for a player that prefers a little more straight faac shot and when I do hit 5652 I like to kind of really use the natural Loft I don’t open these up too too much I like just letting my ball position control the trajectory or the height so I like a more straight-faced sand wedge gap wedge especially you know for out on the golf course and these just look really really really good really really Standard 12 degrees of bounce on my 56 I think I’ve played that bounce forever so when I’m hitting shots like this I want this this wedge to just interact very comfortably with the turf and if I put the ball back it’s going to go a little bit lower if I put the ball back it can go a little bit higher but this is the S grind 56 but that grind that bounce little little heavy little steep there I get away with it because it’s it’s it’s the shot I want to hit and it’s not completely contingent on a perfect strike whereas that one was struck perfectly and we almost made it but then I can go to this 52 let’s say the conditions are really firm and I really want to to Chase this thing up there I can do just that I did use the Jaws raw last year for a few weeks when I tested them and this the feel is quite similar the look is better though the look in these wedges is definitely better yeah so that’s kind of like a breakdown of the grinds that I chose now let’s get into a little bit of the the versatility of these things so a way that I love to test the the playability versatility especially of a 60 degree is just get a pretty straightforward shot but work on low medium high can I control the the distance can I control the height can I control the spin with a 60° and a 60° you know putting it back in the stance I’m not really wanting to use a lot of that that bounce can I really just drive it and not dub it in the ground but then can I get up here and really just slide the club underneath it that confidence you get in knowing you can hit all the shots then we just kind of go you know straight face back of the stance nothing crazy little mid height but then we can go straight face forward goes a little bit higher but the strike in the spin is there and I mean this thing is definitely performing but then you know close it down can you get super creative with the wedge because you’re not always going to have straightforward shots you’re going to have to get creative out there will your wedge let you get creative and not kind of let you down like that was not good but I learned from that you know I got a feel okay that that actually could be all right there we go that that grind feels nice if I’m honest this does feel better than the Jaws raw did last year this is a really really good feeling wedge around the greens but let’s get into like some of the thick stuff stuff and just see how it reacts so we throw it down here in the thick stuff you know and the design of these things they’re meant to help you here I know we made it but the grind the bounce the Leading Edge the face that’s the big thing that they’re talking about this year is this spin gen face it’s going to help you in so many conditions so many lies I feels really good now I just want to go on the golf course and see can we flight it can we can we control it that’s kind of the next test when it comes to putting a new wedge in your back you’re seeing it here they perform so well like around the greens I’m able to do a lot with these and out on the golf course I did play one round before even just going out and filming my testing and I liked how they performed I liked how they felt I liked what I could do with them I think I picked better grinds so I can do more with these wedges and I’m able to hit all the shots I want to hit and have a wedge perform the way I want it to perform and the new face the spin gen face definitely is noticeable it’s the control is there more so than what I experienced with the Jaws raw last year so obviously a big thing with wedges when you’re out on the golf courses you’re not often hitting them like full you’re trying to control your yardage control your trajectory so this is like a great little test for me 85 yards so that’s not a full lob wedge not a half lob wedge it’s a lob wedge that I need to flight that I want to control because from 85 yards you want to be hitting these things close enough where you’re giving yourself a really good look uh at birdie that felt awesome feel like it’s a little long wow that that’s little deep so we can take a little bit off but that uh gosh that felt good A little steep jumped up a little bit landed on my Mark it’s like a B we’ll give that a b we got to get to an A+ so 85 y you can see about five yards deep not uh not the best but the first one the trajectory we liked second one we got a little steep we still kind of got the same distance so that’s that’s just good to know but here we go 53 yards little downhill lie let’s go one out of the rough one out of the Fairway can we again control spin control trajectory have this bounce this face react the way we want it to like that flight really like could hit a little bit harder but that’s exactly the shot I want to hit there drive it one two bounce little trickle but then out of the rough playing for a little more release maybe we want to go a little bit higher with it wow that thing yeah that landed soft we went from a b we’re kind of like a minus that was that was good let’s go back a little bit to like the 52 and see what we can do so here we’ve got a shot that you need to be licking your chops at it’s a flat green pin is just very getable I’ve got 123 not much wind but I don’t want something that’s launching way up that the wind that is above the trees can really affect it so this is a shot where I need to really kind of chip flight a 52 degree probably taking six yards off of it but can I do it will this will the spin will the launch will it do everything I want it to do that felt so good through the turf perfect distance a little higher I think than I would have liked I mean the spin was obviously right distance was right just got to see if I can’t launch it flight it a little lower better I just pulled it shoot that was such a better flight flew maybe a yard or two long those both felt really good now I need to kind of Meet the middle I mean the distance control is there like the consistency even the pole went only a couple yards further launch just a a little high so let’s go into the garage let’s get some numbers because I’m really really curious what the launch what the spin is that I’m getting out of these and maybe compare them to the Jaws Raw numbers that I got last year so when I pull numbers for wedges I pull for like a kind of flighted 3/4 tight shot so that’s a 90 yard 60° 105 Y 56° and 120 Y 52° and I want to take these numbers from the Opus wedges and compare them head-to-head to the numbers I got last year when I tested the Jaws raw yes different shafts entirely we have a KBS tour V 125 G stiff in the Opus last year when I tested the Jaws raw I had a black money taper 130 g x shaft so let’s just compare and contrast and see the differences in these numbers and see if the opuses are giving me the numbers that I comfortably want to consider putting these in the bag so here they are head-to-head and the big thing that stands out is the ball speed and Club speed probably because of the spin in the Opus it took less Club speed less ball speed to get that 90 yard shot launch is still basically the same but you see the peak height is a little lower with the Opus and the spin is lower so it was almost like I had to work harder with the Jaws raw to hit it 90 yards I had to hit it harder which was more Club speed more ball speed and the spin was going up and those numbers with that 60° are awesome that Peak Height’s great that spin is great everything is really good and if I if I have to work less swing slower to still hit that yardage that’s that’s awesome then we dive into the 56 and it’s more of the same you’re seeing the ball speed and the club head speed with Opus is lower still getting that 105 yard shot spin lower launch slightly lower like the Jaws raw they launched well for me last year but they spun too much and the peak height was too high and if you look here Peak height with that 56 that is awesome like to hit that flighted still with enough spin that it lands and stops that was really really encouraging and exciting because yeah wedges you want them to perform really well around the greens but you want to be able to kind of flight those wedges keep them low control them we don’t want our wedges ballooning up into the sky and sometimes when they’re spinning too much that’s what’s happening and you see it there the peak height so different but I’m still getting the yardage I want still landing at a really good angle with enough spin to really hold it just uh it’s really cool stuff to see and then we go into the 52 more of the same ball speed Club speed it’s lower with Opus I’m having to work less to get what I want and then the spin is actually more with Opus which is good it’s almost like with the Jaws raw I I was hitting it flat like it wasn’t spinning enough and the peak height is about the same so if I’m hitting a gap wedge 3/4 like I still want to get it high enough I don’t want this low thing but I need it spinning enough that when it lands it’s going to land and stop and everything that lacked in Jaws raw especially with the 120 shot the spin was not enough the spin is is so good so across the board launch spin B speed height everything is really really good I like the looks of them the Jaws raw looked really cool especially all black with the Black Shaft these are a better looking head they look more performance they look more like a tour player wedge and then these numbers these numbers are really good and yeah going to a slightly softer shaft I think was a better choice for me allows me to control it a little bit more I can’t say enough good things I’m going to keep these in the bag for uh the foreseeable future play some more rounds with them really test them around the greens but yeah Opus they they kind of live up to that name because in my testing these definitely are the best Cowboy wedges I’ve ever hit

  1. Definitely would recommend SW at 12 deg bounce and LW at 8 deg bounce for those that need somewhere to start

High bounce SW for full shots and bunkers, lower bounce LW for partial shots and tight lies without getting too extreme

  2. I have SM9 Vokey wedges. I'm not switching anytime soon. However, I'm always curious about new equipment. Your 3/4 wedge yardages are like my full wedge numbers….damn I need to get faster…

  3. From this professional conductor, Opus just means a work. Not necessarily the Magnum Opus…that is the greatest work. But hey, they are good, and if they fit the player, then they are great 🙂

  4. Opus doesn't refer to a composer's greatest works; they are just collections of works ordered by date that all composers use.
