I took a trip to a favourite course of mine in North Wales. Porthmadog GC is a vastly underrated course that has some amazing views and the back nine is fantastic. I also explain why I only carry 7 golf clubs and how it might be worth a try for yourself.

Just an Average Golfer giving unbiased opinions on all things golf, product tests, Golf travel vlogs and golf news!

thanks to ag1 for sponsoring today’s video in today’s video I’m traveling to North Wales to show you a very much underrated golf course that could well be one of the very best in Wales it also has one of the best beaches in Wales which is where we’ll be starting today’s episode of off the Beaten Track This is Black Rock Sands in Port Manic and just over those Dunes is Port M golf club which is where I’ll be heading very shortly so we come out pre-round and got a bit of Drone footage uh that’s being shared with you now and you can see how this area that I’m on now looks so spectacular so for me the course is split very much into two parts and there’s a road that divides it and the 11 or 12 holes that are on this side which is very much the back nine predominantly you actually start on holes one and two on this side as well other the real interested it plays really lynxy really quirky no flat lie looks incredible in the right light which unfortunately we don’t have today but all around this kind of uh Cove area which is I’m still on the 12T there’s a little par three which is 11 um and it just it’s an incredible stretch this is one of the quirkiest those You’ll Play t right across the uh the beach green rather right across the beach we stood on the te area although we’ll be a little bit forward on these winter tees a little bit later on and then you play a way up high a par three which again will show you when the round commences but it’s a a real highlight of the round so whenever you play if things aren’t going too well on the front line and going in there cuz you got some incredible views waiting for you on the back [Music] now as well as having a look around Port M golf club I’m also going to tell you what’s in my bag for 2025 why I only carry would you believe seven clubs and why I feel it actually makes me a better golfer now not only will I share with you what those seven clubs are I’ll also explain to you why I feel by only carrying seven clubs it has actually made me a better golfer and I reckon it would you also so this is going to be very much a hybrid video we’re going to take a look at the course and I’ll speak to you more about that perhaps on the back nine and on this front nine we’ll talk about these seven clubs these seven clubs are my favorite seven clubs and that’s important because a they give me confidence and B they give me plenty of enjoyment both in equal measure and that is also hugely important you see the thing is I’m not a massive fan of putting 14 clubs in my bag just because the rules of golf permit me to and that’s again a real a huge mistake in many bags setup in my opinion and it’s always been that stereotypical setup hasn’t it driver 3-wood fivewood four iron through to pitching wedge it’s like really time to drop that one I never use me fourwood h four iron I never use a five iron just not that good with either of those three-wood I cannot stand why would I carry them in the bag I fill my bag full of clubs that give me confidence and uh straight away that only needs to be seven seven Club I’m comfortable with is a much better situation than 14 where half a dozen of them I’m not too keen on now first of all I going to say I carry seven clubes because well that’s about as heavy a weight as I’m prepared to L around that’s one of the reasons but it’s not the important one the seven clubs I carry are as follows driver that can either be driver or mini driver and then carry a 22° hybrid I’ve got a six iron an8 iron a pitching wedge a 54° wedge a putter all essential I can get around this course no problem with all of those clubs and I’m never caught short for one main reason right before we get back out there in the fairways you just want to say a quick thank you and that is to the sponsor of today’s video which is ag1 not only for sponsoring the video but also for looking after my own personal health over the last 12 months because that’s how long I’ve been sort of drinking this you’ll have seen it on uh a number of videos that we filmed so far and I’ve just seen a lot of positive impact that it’s had on my cam kind of my fatigue my energy levels better focus and just all around it’s had a positive impact I would also say uh on the golf course as well so all very much positive stuff from ag1 and it’s dead simple to put together I’m going to make a drink now which uh I’ll take before I go out onto the fairways I do this every single day and there’s so much positive reasons for doing so so ag1 is a comprehensive and convenient supplement with over 70 high quality ingredients in one simple scoop that supports phys physical and mental health the idea that I’m taking on board a whole load of vitamins and nutrients every day also has a positive impact mentally KN that I’m putting a lot of good things in my body without making big changes to my daily diet or lifestyle and it couldn’t be any simpler to make each morning one scoop of ag1 added 250 mil of water if you fancy giving this a go subscribe now and get a free bottle of vitamin D and five free ag1 travel packs with your first subscription go to drink ag1 /av golfer or scan the QR code to get started once again thanks to ag1 for sponsoring today’s video so the six hole at Port mic real feature hole on the front nine playes very much in island green and interesting enough it was just 118 yard from the te now it’s a full-on pitching wedge or the shot that you’re watching me play right now was what I would call a half of an eight iron and there’s a controlled swing it means that I can play my ATI in from 150 down to 120 or 118 yards in this case and it works for me and what that means is I’m able to control a club head in doing so I’m able to control my Tempo swing rhythm in doing so and I think that’s a real key important message as to why these seven clubs can make you a better golfer so com towards the end of the front nine this is eight I got an interesting little path three that comes next from an elevated position we can have a look at I did want to say that how dry this nine has been cuz historically and I must Adit I’ve been here for a number of years maybe a little bit of an issue on this side with drainage but they seem to have put heck of a lot in um since I was last year and it’s so dry on the foot greens are still really firm and rolling through and fairly quick as well for a time of year so uh that’s off to the green staff it’s in it’s in great condition and as a matter of reference I know everybody always asked me this I paid £25 uh Green fee today so I gives you an idea here on where it sits so really good value piece of golf in the middle of winter [Music] [Music] back to where it all started just played that par three which was 11 we’ll get onto the 12 T box in a minute I think it’s what I like to call a smell the roses moment where it’s time to just uh chill for a little while it’s interesting now it’s it doesn’t look quite as pretty aty with the uh with the water out tied out that is it’s the Irish sea just over the uh well over the brow and uh the beach is lovely though all around here white sandy beaches the water is nice as well a bit cold for a dip today though and this is this hole where the the green sits on the top um of The Cliff face not the biggest the cliff faces I don’t know what to hit I’m going to play a a six iron and it will of course be half a six iron and then hopefully we just leave a wedge up the hill that was nice enough it’s at the right distance that’s perfect and we got a decent angle in to that pin what a t position very much playing blind second shot and uh blind in two ways I’m not too sure on the yardage we’re going to with a full 54 and then it’s a case of let’s see what Lies Over The Ridge I think that could be quite good you know it’s on the line I wanted and uh feels like the right distance [Music] [Music] in memory of members who have passed not a bad position if they’re spending some time up here now because uh another smell the roses moment that we’re on top of the world up here uh part three which we’re going to play from a shorter te forward te rather and I’ll tell you I’ve stood up here and it’s been blowing an absolute hoolie 40 50 mph winds and you’re playing driver from where we’re about to play from uh it’s a bit different today but the views are spectacular if we were able to sort of see further that way there’s a bit of low Cloud then all the mountains are well this is a gorgeous place it really is and that’s a 360 panoramic so yeah those members who have passed let’s hope there I’ve been spending a bit of time up here every now and then this is the uh 15th green it’s long and narrow and bordered by uh two they’re not juned Banks let’s say really shapes the hole when you when you’re coming in if you look back that way and like I said earlier on about the sort of light when the light is shining across those uh mounds and rolling Fairways it looks incredible and then at the back of the screen you get that view again not that you’d want to be here and at your ball as far through but we’re going have a look but what I like about golf courses what I realize is that they just got to have some character for me and that’s why I’m always drawn to linkx land because it’s just that that ruggedness uh and quirkiness I suppose that you just don’t get in the sort of pristine well manicured Parklands and like I said it’s just the character of these places really kind kind of comes through I don’t know whether you can make your way up here but it’s just it’s just few after the view in it it’s beautiful and if you have a just a quick spin back around you’ll see just how long and narrow this green is and with that flag at the front that’ll be quite a tough one to get to we’ll see how we fare so the question I’ve not answered yet is why does this help me become a better golfer well the shot I’ve just played from this t is what I think is really key and important to becoming a better golfer and that’s the ability to control the club head control the ball flight and control the tempo of your swing and the ability to hit a half shot a three4 shot and a full shot with each of the clubs that you’ve got in the bag gives you so many more options and I can’t always do it I’m I’m not fantastic at executing a low shot that I’ve just or a punt shot that I’ve just hit into this flag but when it comes off to me it’s it’s a huge part of the game that makes it really I don’t get any more pleasure than that I don’t like sort of Target Golf and just Fir and drive and wedge into greens that’s boring golf get out on the links and uh you know try and shape a shot a little bit in days of old and like I said being able to hit I’ve got a six iron that can go 180 all out and it can go back down to 150 I’ve got the eight iron goes 15 down to 120 and I’ve got a wedge that goes 120 to 75 yards covers all those distances and today I’ve been out and not once have I reached for my club and thought I haven’t got a club to cover the distance that I’m looking for I got one final thing to say on that matter ask yourself this how many times do you hit a better shot when you’re trying to lay up short of a hazard than when a green gets in the way and what I mean by that is this when you laying up short of a hazard I’ll bet you your Tempo is nice and smooth nice and controlled you’re not trying to overhit the ball it’s a layup shot that same shot covering the same distance when you see a flag in front of you all of a sudden the tempo goes it all becomes erratic you lose control of the club head and quite often more than not and I’ve seen it on a number of occasions things go arai so having control of that club head is massive anyway enough of that I said it was a hybrid video how good has Port M been what I cannot believe is just this idea that there’s been no Breeze you would normally be literally blown off your feet here you have a pan round there again and I’ll go see if I can make the birdie cuz that’s my favorite shot of the day I’ve just played right one thing before we go cuz we’re early at the end is um uh can I ask you to think about signing up for a newsletter we’ve introduced and load of you had I can’t believe the response we’ve had to it so basically if you click the link in the description or go to the average gulfer .co.uk there’s an easy popup that will give you the option to sign up for a newsletter keeps you informed everything average golfer and more and we’re trying to build a bit more of a commity thing going again and what I’m hoping in the longer term is that the website will also provide you with a bit of a course guide if you want to plan a trip especially for maybe those people who coming from the US then there’s so we’ve got or we will have over 100 courses that will feature that I filmed that and it’ll give you a load of information that you need to try and book and organize a trip but in the short term if you sign up for the newsletter greatly appreciated I’ve got a put for birdie so H going in there I’m not going to spend too much time on this one but cuz that gives me an excuse to miss turn aad oh yeah hello I’ve had a few birdies today and uh that’s with only seven clubs in a bag I’ll over complicate things satday and put 14 in could go in that’d be nice finish of the video now I know seven clubs is uh it’s not for everybody and it’s not a realle book you can do what the heck you want an ideally I’d prefer a 58 than a 54 in there but you make do with what you’ve got and my advice if there is any from this video the takeaways are two things one try a reduce number of clubs in your bag and get familiar with just a few of them builds confidence and enjoyment like I said and then the second thing is get down to Port madic if you’re anywhere close and play it cuz for 25 quid that is an absolute a bargain my white shoes are pristine I’ve got no mud on me and for this time of year in the middle of Wales that’s pretty incredible right I’m off I’ll see you next week can I have that

  1. I have adopted an 8 club bag after watching your videos (D, 5H, 7, 8, 9, PW, SW (54), Putter)…..playing my best golf in years. I also now enjoy the course more as I enjoy the walk instead of stressing over a bad shot here or there.

  2. Great video Andy. Interesting club strategy! I have used my 52 degree for lots of different shots inside of 100 yardages. However, I believe your club strategy has great merit, and I just might give it a try during one of my upcoming rounds. Driver, 7 wood, 6 iron,9 iron, PW, 52 degree and putter for me. Thanks.

  3. Welcome to the “half set” lifestyle. My bag is Driver, 7 wood, 5/7/9/SW, and putter. Golf gets “simpler” with less clubs and walking is how the game is meant to be played. I’ve been doing 7 clubs for decades! Half Set Full Send!

  4. Some days I carry 7 clubs to make it easier to carry and walk. And my scores are the same! Its all about hitting the fairway and chipping and putting.

  5. I use only 5 different clubs:

    Putter
    Driver
    Mini-driver
    3 Hybrid
    4 Hybrid
    5-Iron
    6-Iron
    7-Iron
    8-Iron
    9-Iron
    PW
    GW
    SW
    LW

So, how do 14 clubs only equal 5? Because my 4-Hybrid through Lob Wedge are all single-length. (Wishon EQ1-NX.) They are the same shafts, length, gross weight, swing weight, lie, ball position, and MOI. They're all swung the exact same way, all through the set. Swinging one is swinging any or all. That means the only clubs I DON'T swing in the same way are the driver, mini-driver, 3-Hybrid, and putter. This also has the benefit of simplifying practice.

Five swings, 14 clubs. Thus, 5 clubs.

  6. Nice video. Thanx…
As much as you work with your bag of 7 clubs getting comfortable with, quarter, half and full swings, I do the same with my bag of 14. I like having options. The difference between us is that my club provides a push cart…😁 Cheers…

  7. If you would feel sad to leave half your clubs in your house you could try splitting the set in half and golfing alternately with the other half of the set. Might get surprised at which one helps you score better and some days it might be the one without the driver! I'm going to try it!

  8. Great video the only thing I disagree with is I like to have a three wood by my side. Probably because I don’t hit the ball as well as you do.

  9. 7 clubs and…(drumroll)…VITAMIN D…that’s the secret!!! Now that I know, time to un-subscribe.

  10. I can understanding maybe using 1 or 2 less than 14 clubs but 7 clubs is way too few, so unless you only play on pitch and putt courses what do you do when you are playing a longer course and have 230-250 into par 5s (or even long par 4s for the really short hitters), surely you're not laying up as this strategy of restricting your options on all longer shots is absolute stupidity and it is one sure way to shoot higher scores instead of lower scores as you claim and this contradicts the objective of playing golf which is to shoot as low a score as possible.

  11. I once played a round with a 3 iron a 7 iron and 9 iron and a putter and had a great round never missed a fairway….

  12. @theaveragegolfer my favorite golf channel by far and believe me, I watch many.. absolutely love your content, and your view on this great game. I personally also play 8-9 clubs and have been for many years now, and have no issue playing my regular 6700yrs courses. I just enjoy the simplicity and freedom it provides.. keep up the good work Andy, and please ignore the all stupidness I’ve been reading in the comments.. you’re killing it!!

  13. Great video as always, Andy! I love that you are using a minimum amount of clubs! I've started doing the same about 2 years ago, and you are spot on!! Learning to be creative with what you have helps to engrain skills you never learn if you simply use the same swing every shot. I have become a much better ball striker, and have more confidence in any position.

  14. Short shaft driver (-2” with heavier head weight added to help maintain swing weight) lofted to 14 degrees, 5 wood (again lofted up by 1 degree), 6 hybrid, 8 hybrid, PW, GW, SW, Putter. Been playing this combo now for almost a year and my scores have actually improved ! Started down this road initially due to age and arthritis but now would never go back to anything approaching a full set.

  15. Lovely video. I carry 9 clubs. Driver, 7,8,9,GW,PW, 56 degree wedge, putter. The 9th club can be 6 iron, utility, or currently 5 wood. I’m well into my 70s and expect to play my 18 hole Suffolk Links course in 3 1/4 hours. That is 2 or 3 ball. I won’t play 4 ball golf. The joke with my playing companions is that as I get (even) older I will keep reducing the number of clubs I carry. So I take note of your 7 club makeup! My current quest is to be able to play 1/2 or 3/4 shots reliably, to facilitate further downsizing. I naughtily enjoy watching the self consciousness awkwardness when playing with younger and very fit platers as they lug around huge trolleys, often battery powered, with 14 clubs.

  16. Maybe if you're a high handicap, but not for guys who are 15? or lower. Particularly for approaching the flag and distance control. I have 60, 54, 50, 45, 40 degree iron choices for all of those 150 – 80 yard distances that I can swing the same full swing at, what a difference that makes. Great distance control that allows me more birdie chances. Thats 5 irons alone. (4.7 handicap)

  17. The courses I play here in the USA, with greens running very fast, I could not do without a lob wedge. There are greenside shots that demand it. I can’t open my 54 and add 6 degrees of loft and get consistent results. Much easier to just crack open a 60 and make a simple chipping motion.

  18. The quality of these videos makes me feel like im standing there watching in person. So different from golf here in FL. Bravo 🎉

  19. Splendid channel ! Your other videos have already helped my golf game with your pragmatic perspective. I plan on being in Portmeiron and will certainly make the effort to get to this course. Again, nicely done.

  20. This is one of my favorite courses you have played. It is aesthetically exciting, with some resplendently beautiful backdrops. It is affordable as an everyday/home course. It has some challenging topography. I only bag six clubs.

  21. I took out my driver, 48* and 60* last weekend and broke 100 for the first time. My 3w was good off of the tee but my magic clubs were my 7w and PW. I agree with the idea of simplifying your bag and playing the clubs that you're most comfortable with.
    Great video!
