Final round of the John Deere Classic. TPC Deer Run. Silvis, Illinois tight at top the leaderboard entering Sunday. 19 players within five strokes of the lead. Davis Thompson go trying to go back to back. How about Max Homer? He’s in that group of players trying to win this thing. Would be his first win since the 23 Farmers Insurance Open. Is Birdie put on the par for fourth looking for a third straight bird. He’s got it. He’s got the solo lead at 17 under. There’s Brian Campbell. Already won the Mexico Open back in February. Looking to become the sixth multi-time winner on tour this season. Gets that to curl in for the bird on 10. Breaks out of a five-way tie for the lead. Takes it to 17 under. Not finished on 11. Back-to-back birds solo lead at 18 under. Back to Campbell in a bit. Ameliano Greo looking for his third career PGA Tour win. First since the Charles Schwab couple years ago approach shot out of the par five 10th 109 to the hole gets it up there within two feet. He’d make that birdie putt to go to 17 under par. That was one stroke off the lead at the moment. Not done. Par four par three 12th and he’s one stroke back again to the bottom of the cup. Moves to 18 under on the heels of Campbell. Push ahead to the par 41 15th. Trouble for the leader. This is Campbell with the drive and oh he snap hooks that thing and man we have all been there. It is going into the woods and there’s not a whole lot he can do about it. He’d have to take a penalty stroke and later on trying to save bogey from 10 feet away. Oh, that’s just brutal. Down and out. Double bogeies. Falls out of the lead. Now Greo finds himself at top of the leaderboard at 18 under after a par save. Here’s the par for 15th. Oh my goodness. He misses it from 5 feet. He bogey the hole. falls back into a three-way tie for the lead. It’s 17 under. Who’s going to take this thing? Bar five 17th. Campbell Eagle putt for a two-stroke lead. And it just misses, but he does. Birdie to go to 18 under par. He’d par the 18th. So, he’s in the clubhouse at minus 18. Sitting on the lead. Homer birdie chance on 17. And oh, that doesn’t fall. He tap in for par. finishes tied for fifth at 16 under. Did home. Greo staying on 17. Looking to take a share of the lead here from eight feet away. Glo gets it done. Finds the bottom of the cup. Moves back to 18 under and into the co- lead with Campbell. Glo with a chance to take the solo lead on 18 from 37 feet away. Gives it a ride. It’s got eyes for the hole but slides past. Can’t believe it. Oh, so close. David Lipsky, 37 years young, making a late move on Sunday. Eagle putt on the par five, 17th for a share of the lead. And he has got it. We got a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. Lipsky one hole to play. Needs this birdie putt to force a threeman playoff. He thinks he has it. Took a step and it lipped out. Heartbreak for Lipsky. still looking for his first career PGA Tour win. We’re going to a playoff. It’s down to two. Greo and Campbell going to 18. Second straight week on tour. We got a playoff. 11th playoff in John Deere Classic history. First since 2015. Campbell’s approach from 193. And that’s a beauty to 18 ft from the hole. Pressure on GLO. A Wayward T-OT on the first playoff hole. 168 to the pin and he catches a flyer way long off the back of the green. Didn’t hit the drink, but not a good spot. Campbell, he can two putt now for win number two of the season. This from 16 ft away. Going to end with a flourish, right? Come on now. Ah, that’s all right. He can tap in and win this thing. Brian Campbell wins the 2025 John Deere Classic and he is now a twotime PGA Tour winner. Both coming in 2025. Brian Campbell the sixth multipletime winner on the PGA Tour this season. Both of those wins coming in playoffs. He’s the first golfer to win this tournament in the playoffs since Jordan Spe did it back in 2015. Ameliano Greo so close to his first career PGA Tour title since the Charles Schwab in 2023. And David Lipsky oh so close from making the playoff and a shot at his very first PGA Tour victory. But it’s not to be. It’s Brian Campbell who wins the John Deere Classic. And with more on another exciting final round of the John Deere Classic that went to an extra hole indeed. We say hello to CBS Sports Golf analyst Ian Baker Finch who watched it all unfold there on 18 at TPC uh a dear run. And look, Brian Campbell uh and and uh Ameliano Glo go to the extra hole. But for Brian Campbell, you’re talking about a a career turnaround who lost his card, took forever to get it back, and now he’s won twice this year. Ian, his career now looks completely different, does it not? Oh, it sure does. I mean, and to win both times in playoffs, uh, he’s just seems so confident now to come from where he came from. I’m so proud of him to fight back the way he has through injury. And, uh, he’s not one of the longer hitters out there. In fact, he’s actually one of the shorter hitters. And in a day of bomb and gouging, uh, it’s good to see the guys that can still get it done when they don’t hit it out there 340 like Potg did last week. So very proud of him and he he just seems like he’s on a roll. So many of the guys played well this week under extreme pressure when there’s so much to fight for with only five weeks left uh before the playoffs. No doubt about that. Ameiliano Greo is another one who was in there had a chance to win his third career PGA Tour title. Just couldn’t get it done. Is it just one Aaron shot? Is that it? The flyer on the drive on the on the extra hole that did in his day. I would say it was uh lack of distance control on three short irons. 15 he left at 60 ft short. Uh 16 the same thing again. And then on the last he hit a wedge that flew 180 yards. So that was the disappointing part for GLO. He actually played the best. He only needed one of those uh to be a little bit closer and he would have been the outright winner. So he’ll he’ll have to rethink that a little bit after today. All right. And and I want to talk about one last guy who didn’t make the playoff, but it was David Lipky. He came so close. What an amazing approach to get that eagle putt down on 17 and just couldn’t get over the hump. 37 years of age, been around for a while, never won on tour. How must he feel about himself? It must be majorly disappointing, but man, he put himself in contention and that’s saying something, isn’t it? Yeah, I’ve been in that same situation myself where I miss a playoff by a shot, finish second or third. Uh it’s it’s difficult to put into perspective, but what he has to do is feel so proud of himself and happy with himself that what he’s been working on is working. It didn’t work on the 72nd T-shot, but it’s the only time this week that he hit that shot, the shot that he’s been fighting for so long. So, he should be happy, keep doing what he’s doing, keep working on what he’s working on, and uh enjoy the fact that he’s just risen up the FedEx Cup in the right time of the season. Second straight week we get free golf on the PGA Tour. This one only took one hole to finish. Ian Baker Finch, thank you so much for your time. Much appreciated. Good to be with you. Thank you. Here’s a look at the list of the players with the most wins on the PGA Tour this season. And Brian Campbell is right there with Scotty Shepler and Rory. They have three. And then Campbell’s in that group with two with Ryan Fox, Seraa, and Ben Griffin. Brian Campbell, your 2025 John Deere Classic winner. Brian Campbell wins the John Deere Classic in dramatic fashion from Ramiliano. Two playoffs this year, two wins for Brian Campbell, Andrew Catalon, and Ian Baker Finch on the call on CBS as we look back at the final round of John Deere Classic with CBS Sports Golf analysts Rick Gaiman and Shane Bacon. Shane, I’m going to start with you. Second straight week on tour. We get extra holes. This one only took one as opposed to five a week ago. But for Brian Campbell, his second win of his career and on tour this season, in what ways has his career gone 180 in the last seven months or so? Yeah, I mean an incredible collegiate golfer, great amateur player. I mean, low am you know, back in his Illinois days, but uh I mean, I think he’s leaned into his strengths. I mean, you go back to the Cornferry Tour last season, one of the most accurate players on the Cornferry Tour. He leaned into that this week. I mean, you look at the history of the John Deere. It’s a place where a lot of the players that have had success find a ton of fairways. Campbell hit 44 of 58 fairways, including that playoff this week. He was third last season on the corn ferry tour in drive and accuracy, doing it again this season on the PGA Tour. And I just think he’s a player that has improved the stuff he wasn’t great at, but he has leaned into what he’s always been good at. He’s not a long hitter, as you heard Ian say earlier, but he’s a guy that can find a ton of fairways, and that plays well at this golf tournament. Yeah, Brian Campbell’s a little bit of a unicorn right now. I was just running the numbers and and this is a very rare season that he’s having, and I want to I mean this very kindly, but Brian Campbell’s in the midst of one of the worst two- win seasons that we’ve seen on the PGA Tour in the last 25 years. I mean, he has been statistically an average golfer and he’s got two victories. Usually you see, you know, it’s the Rory Mroy, it’s the Scotty Sheffller, Sept Straka’s got two wins this year. They’ve been phenomenal every single time that they tee it up. And Shane is absolutely right. He has to lean into his strengths. He lost about four strokes off the tea this week, which is something that he does regularly. He spots the rest of the field multiple shots because he does not hit it very far off the tea at all. And he has to be basically perfect everywhere everywhere else. And that’s what he’s done on two separate occasions this year. So, the fact that he’s even able to kind of um summon this ability to get to the top of the leaderboard and then to prevail in a playoff, I I find it incredibly impressive the way that he’s been able to cross the finish line not once but twice this year. And Campbell did finish strong in the playoffs with a beautiful approach on 18. Ameliano GLO gave him a little bit of breathing room with a wayward drive on the first playoff hole. Greo Shane is going to be upset obviously not winning this thing when he had an opportunity. What should he feel good about coming out of the John Deere? I think he battled well. I mean, he hit some pretty poor iron shots. You heard Ian talk a little bit about it. I mean, kind of down the stretch, uh, the distance control was way off. I mean, well short on a couple holes on the way in and then obviously the flyer in the playoff, but I’d say he had his B+ A minus game and was able to get himself near the top of the leaderboard and nearly winning this thing. I mean, you know, Grio’s one of those players that seems to pop up about twice a year, which is kind of what the modern professional golfer does. And uh I mean that close in in regulation to winning the thing outright. Uh not a great T- shot here in the playoff. You see missing that one right. Kind of the one spot you don’t want to hit it. Uh faded over there and then obviously brings the water into play with that second because you’ve got to kind of go across that green. But I’d say, you know, not his best stuff. Got into a battle, had a chance at the last in regulation to win it. And I think when you don’t win, you’ve got to look at your opportunity down the stretch. And I’d say with some of those poor approach shots still giving him a chance in regulation with that long putt at 18, I’d say is is a positive to build on. I think Ameliano should call Shane tonight because that’s exactly what he should be hearing that, hey, you didn’t have your best up and you were still able to get into a playoff and you were a revolution away from winning a golf tournament. I I think what we’ve seen from Ameliano Greo as he’s kind of worked out of his own slump uh to start 2025 is he’s back to doing what he does best, what his DNA is, and that’s to be a great te to Green player. We’ve seen him tinker with a lot of different putting styles and, you know, going to the claw grip and changing to a mallet style putter. Like all of that stuff is to try to fix the worst part of his game. But it’s good to see him knocking the cover off the ball again. And I think you you you get a little bit unlucky with a you know 180 yard pitching wedge that you hit in the on the first playoff hole and um you you chalk it up as a as a great week and you see if you can continue to build on the momentum. So this should be a very good takeaway after about I don’t know an hour or so of of sorrow for Ameliano. In the last hour of play there was great drama at the John Deere Classic as you looked at the leaderboard and there were so many players who had a chance to either get into the lead or get close to the lead and put themselves in position. David Lipsky is a guy who maybe had the shot of the day in the fourth round and that was his second shot of the par five 17th put himself in position. He was two strokes off the lead coming in an eagle putt to tie for the lead going into 18 with an honest chance to maybe birdie 18 and go ahead. But all he needed was par on 18 to get into the playoff. And this is how close David Lipsky was to joining the other two in that extra hole. But David Lipsky, 37 years old, still in search of his very first PGA Tour win. That’s basically how close he was from giving himself a chance to do it in a playoff. Uh Rick, what would you say to David Lipky tonight if you were his either his caddy or his friend? I’d say uh head up big man. Right. This was this was a weird day. you know, he was playing with Davis Thompson in the final group and there was not a lot of that of momentum in that group. You know, Davis really struggled all day long and you stand over your ball on 17 and you hit one of the shots of of the week and certainly one of the shots of the day to then cash it in for an Eagle and all of a sudden you go from a very lethargic group not feeling like you have the chance to, oh my gosh, I birdie, you know, I birdie 18 here and I win this golf tournament. I make par. I get into the playoff and I think things went from zero to 100 for David like very very quickly and we saw that immediately with the t-shot that he hit on 18 way left. There was nobody else down there all day long. Yeah. Yeah. It’s a it’s a learning moment. Um I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of situations moving forward for him where he’s got to have that big of a turnaround. So I would say build off this David. It’s all good brother. Let’s uh let’s go back out and see what we can do next week. Yeah. I mean I agree with Rick. I mean, I think he was almost surprised he was in that position on the 18th T. I mean, he makes the eagle there. Nobody was really taking it right kind of at the end of this golf tournament and he all of a sudden makes three at the par five and it’s like, I might win this thing and then what happens when players are nervous? The drives go left and the putts end up short and that drive went very very left, very, very fast. I know that shot oh so well. And uh yeah, I mean he gave himself an opportunity. I mean, he played the right shot I thought with the second. You know, they were debating hitting sevenwood there. I was happy with the wedge shot to give himself an opportunity to get it up and down and then oh man the early step always kills you, doesn’t it? You do that quick step thinking that was going to break in. I thought it was going to go in. It looked great. He hit it on the exact line he wanted to and uh I think of all things he’s probably going to be thinking about is man, how did that putt not break, you know, into that cup and and go in and save that par? But again, I think it was a bit of a surprise for everybody giving himself that opportunity there on the 18th TE and uh not his best swing. Something he’s been fighting this season and uh you know, still had a chance to make four there and get in the playoff. All right, top players now trucking across the pond if they haven’t done it already as the tour moves uh first uh for the warm-up to the Open Championship and then the Open Championship. Let’s take a look at our FedEx Cup update now presented by FedEx where now meets next. top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will reach the playoffs. Uh how, if anything, did things change uh based on what happened at the John Deere, Rick? Well, first off, I want to point out, you know, we’re going to go across the pond for for two weeks and then when you get back, the season is like over, right? So, opportunities are are running very thin for guys that are trying to get themselves into a good position. The consolation prize for Ameliano Greo this week is moving from 105th in the FedEx Cup standings to 64th. So that would currently if the season ended right now it would get him in the playoffs. It would give him a chance to make a run to East Lake all that fun stuff when just 4 days ago he had a lot of work to do. So that’ll be a little bit of a consolation prize for Ameliano Glob. And there’s a lot of magic numbers out there right now. 125 and 70 and then as we continue to move throughout the year 50 that’s getting you into all the signature events and of course 30 now without the staggered start at the tour championship gives anybody a chance to be the tour champion. Shane, uh what are you going to be looking forward to with just a couple weeks left now to really for guys to make moves? Well, I mean I look at Max really kind of finding form at a golf tournament that he hadn’t played in much, hadn’t played in in a long time. Maybe not a golf course I’d say fit his game necessarily in terms of driving the golf ball, but I mean for somebody like Max Home and now to jump into the top 100, I think it was huge for him. So I I look at Max to hopefully build on a little bit of momentum uh as the season kind of comes to an end and see if he can maybe potentially have another week like this and play himself into that top 70. I mean, for Max, it has been a forgotten season. It has been a disappointing season. It has been a frustrating season, but he had an opportunity on Sunday and that’s the first time we’ve seen that really all season long for Max. He’s played well a couple of rounds and that’s it at some of the bigger tournaments. But I think when you’re thinking about marquee names of the John Deere, you have to look at Max. You have to look at one of the most popular players on the PGA Tour and somebody that now has an opportunity to build on some momentum as the season really starts to wind down. All right, that’ll put a bow our analysis of the 2025 John Deere Classic. We say thanks to Shane Bacon and Rick Gaming. Gentlemen, thank you so much for your expertise and the knowledge.
