welcome back to the channel thanks for watching if you like our stuff please hit that like and subscribe jump in the comments tell us what you think today is all about Ping a brand new product replacing the i230 which was a really good iron yeah at the time actually we first tested it we were doing quite a bit of robot testing it was actually the best iron we tested in a tour test you know on right around the center super consistent really good golf club ball around not super long or anything else but uh very very consistent okay well let’s tell you about the video we’re going to talk a little bit of tech and then we’re going to let the robot verify their tech basically so the i230 you can see it on here and hopefully we get some good B-roll of this one of the big changes the groove pattern between the new one and the old one so this new one actually has much wider space grooves than the old one and honestly the old one that looked a little funny to me cuz they look kind of close together um so I kind of like the look of it i mean but there’s performance stuff too right so fairway more spin from the fairway that’s what they’re going for then we got the badge in the back here or the way the back badge looks this is called an ABS badge with elastma underneath and it’s all about weight saving so they’re basically getting the CG lower making the MOI higher where possible and they’re making it sound and feel quieter softer however you want to describe that then there’s also been some changes to the body style if we go across here and have a look at the offset we’ve got more offset in the new one we’ve got thinner top line in the new one we’ve got a smaller footprint in the new one so this the sole area that interacts with the ground and then we’ve also got a longer blade length so it’s like this weird mix of like there’s a bit more help with blade length and offset there’s a bit better visual and playability with the top line and the solder design yeah it definitely looks a little clean on the top i mean it’s barely noticeable the top line i mean both of these are pretty thin right so they look pretty good um I do notice it looks just a little easier to hit now this is a pretty tall iron as far as you know front to back so to me the old one looked a little squatty and high so I kind of like the new look it looks a little friendlier but it doesn’t look big by any means and this is the right package I think for most golfers out there this is the tour inspired package right because it looks like a good but it’s got a ton of tech in it so basically all of that technology washes out to them calling out for more forgiveness more height more stopping power and the loft package is the same so we should see kind of similar in terms of not much change there other than what the center of gravity does right and there’s some interesting stuff there okay first things first we’re going to test it at 90 mph cuz there’s definitely players out there who are going to be playing it like that we’re going to hit the center shot from both I240 first I230 second and then we’re going to go into the 80 mph verified test we got some numbers and we got some graphs to look at as well let’s kick it off with the 90 mph I240 okay straight down the middle pass face impact so it’s all good one caveat if you watched our prior video we did some 90 mph testing on some Mazuna iron right and what we’ve seen is we’ve been messing around with this tool player effectively getting the shaft lean right and the angle of attack right and getting the launch in the right window right when we got the launch in the right window the spin was a little off so now we basically just put those two things together so this one we should have closer with launch closer with spin for this so this is not an apples to apples with the Mazuno data that you’re going to see no exactly right but they’re going to be apples to apples and we’re still kind of fussing with this a little bit really been mentioned on the on the 80 m hour probably going to make a couple changes there as well but it’s all apples to apples so yeah okay dead straight uh we got 6200 nearly 6,300 RPM we have got nearly 50 degrees my eyesight’s terrible 49 degrees uh descent angle and we carried it 172 that’s about bang on that’s kind of where I carry my 7i about 172 with 90 mph so pretty good next thing up we’re going to snap in the old I230 right and see if there’s any difference so basically we might see a little lower launch in the old version here and maybe a little lower spin we’ll see all right okay interesting so a t about exactly the same launch angle right lower spin a decent amount lower spin and about the same land angle so in this 90 mph test nothing drastic showed up but I got the chance to test this myself in hand last week and I hit them headto-head and I’m about 90 maybe a little faster than 90 i saw the i240 launch a little higher about half a degree or one degree spin a tiny bit more not quite a crazy amount and I picked up some stopping power for that um but I did lose some yardage for me at that speed not that big a deal i don’t really care right and you know I dug into the data a little bit on this too and and we’re kind of messing around with how high up on the face we’re hitting and one of the things I noticed on the date on this one and we don’t obviously not showing all the stuff but you know as a little get a little bit lower this actually gets longer the new one so they’ve definitely lowered the CG and it’s definitely better on thin shots by a fair amount yes yeah so it’s a bit misleading so when we measured you know apples to apples you know a little bit down from center this is actually longer the the new one’s longer the new is absolutely longer okay let’s take three yards longer actually the flight here for a second and see i don’t know if we’re going to actually get to see much difference between these two yeah the golf shots are almost right barely much to see both tailed down the right so they’re obviously similar CGs yep so let’s move on to the 80 mph test here and we’ll compare some numbers then we got some graphing which is an interesting one to talk about so um do you want to do the numbers sure um so you know launch obviously was a little higher on the new one which you’d expect from the lower CG which is what they’re trying to do big improvements great for me i mean I hit the ball thin a lot so I’m really interested in this one um spin was pretty much identical i mean you’re talking about you know 60 under 100 RPM so you have to hit an awful lot but this is averaged over a bunch so similar uh height is almost about the same big difference in land angle yep and that’s interesting yeah which is a lot definitely better stopping power on the back end that might be a couple of yards different a couple of at least a few feet in terms of how much it’s going to roll out on the ground absolutely yeah quite a bit and that’s who this is going to be aimed at right someone who wants more control and like I said this this brings that player the one who might not be ready for I’m just trying to think of Ping’s next one down is the Blueprint S and that is a lot smaller package it’s quite a bit smaller yeah it’s a smaller package for sure um definitely not as forgiving um so this is a good intermediate one i mean this you could certainly be a tour player and play this probably have quite a few tour players using this on tour yeah at least one yeah at least one but probably quite a few more especially in the LPJ tour um it’s just a really good golf club all around nothing’s crazy hot and obviously if you’re showing a little bit shorter about the same distance that’s fine i mean you know what one thing you kind of think about here is you know everyone try to beat last year’s club well you can’t make them all longer forever right we’d end up with 10 wedges in our bag so you know the fact that some of these clubs and not just this and some other brands we’ve seen as well actually they’re shortening them a little bit which you know spreads the gaps better okay so you’ve left me with the uh the explanation of the dispersion so this is this is kind of an interesting one to look at if you look at the overall yardage the new one loses right by about 30 30 square yards and it’s it’s purely because of this tow strike if you look at every other impact location center center low center half inch low which is basically just right in the middle of the golf ball right the it’s way better and it’s not just better in terms of top to bottom it’s better than each individual location is much much tighter so the toe strike on this is is is dropping off the distance and we know that toe is kind of bad but what this is tending to tell us is it’s it’s behaving more like a better players club right toe shots drop off a little bit more because there’s not as much power meat behind that area so a lot better if a little bit lower in the face a little lower in the face and obviously even the distance is better up lower in the face so it’s it’s good all around in in that respect and I think that’s a huge one when I thin one out there as a better player me too you’re like you want it to hit the front of the green steel and this is what the I240 is doing i230 is dropping way down short toe strike unfortunately I get that one too so I would definitely be paying attention to that here um but the the the middle the center shot stopping power being greater and all the other things that we talked about looks a little looks easier to hit i mean obviously the the the heel totoe length um you know with it being a relatively tall club anyway I think just looks better right that the old one with the small grooves and the short front and the heights it just kind of looked like a box to me yeah um although it’s great performing club like I said one of the best we ever tested at that point in time so I think they’ve done a good job trying to improve a club that was really good to begin with i agree i think that is the key message right they did an awesome job with I230 I240 not real flashy looking but that’s Ping right it’s just a really functional golf club you know i love that but it does look a little cleaner i like the carbon bit and I like the you know a little bit of red in it so it’s got some color to it um just all around looks a little cleaner looking to me and you know certainly better in some respects for sure well jump in the comments tell us what you think there’s some tough decisions here to be made between the 230 and the 240 i love what Mark said functional golf club from Ping and it was a tough ask to beat the 230 do you think they’ve done it let us know in the comments below again please hit that like and subscribe button we’ve got plenty more clubs to test this week so stick in there we’ll see you next time oh [Music]

Embargo day! Ugly as heck but interested to see. It's this or 3dp tour for me this fall. 🎉
They made the bag appeal a lot uglier that’s for sure
The Ping i230 was definitely a sleeper for tour speed amateurs. It is incredibly forgiving while still being low launching which is a rare combo
240 just looks cheap and ugly now. Nope.
The fact that low shots on the i240 go further than center shots seems crazy to me. Why would anyone want to play an iron where a miss hit goes further than a shot out the middle. Those low spin flyers are not something I would expect out of a players iron.
The pink dispersion circle on the i240s looks scary – front to back dispersion now looks a LOT wider.
I’m intrigued by the longer blade length. My only complaint, similar to Mark, is that it looks like a box. But, damn it’s consistent! And because of the casting, my lofts and lies are still in spec nearly 2 years into playing them.
this looks like a downgrade in every sense lol. much worse looking, more offset, shorter, wider dispersion. what am i missing?
Plans for the Maxfli irons?
Would love to see a comparison between i200 vs i210 vs i230 vs i240
This club "looks" like it was designed by the engineers instead of the designers. Ugly.
Not seeing any real change in performance compared to my i210s – which in my hands spin more than the i230s. I also prefer the look of the i210 over the i240.
Really interesting video
I game the i230s 5-pw ….50 years old …swing speed around 85 and i have no complaints….have them in retro loft ….not ashamed to hit my 7 iron 150 ….gapping is more important to me …5 iron 175 ….6 iron 165 ….7 iron 153 ….8 iron 142…9 iton 130 …pw 118 …..
Jeez…stop cutting off Jack mid sentence.
とても興味深く拝見しました。
i240にかなり期待していたのですが残念です。
発売まで待って、一応試打はしてみますが、今の気持ちはBRIDGESTONEかSRIXONです。
idiとG425crossoverの比較をお願い致します。
i240 now looks like a G.I. club with that badging
Really interesting comparison. The i230, like a lot of Ping irons, is higher CoG and higher MOI than most of its competitors. With the higher CoG, you would expect it to do very poorly with low strikes, but the AskGolfNut testing, and my own experience is that it is not bad at all at retaining distance on low strikes. Even the ~12 yards/8% loss on 0.5" low as tested here is pretty average looking at some of the historical 80 mph tests. With the i240 doing so well from low here, I'm curious to see what the CoG measures out at. As another commenter mentioned, the i240 semi-low strike being 5 yards longer than a center strike is a bit concerning. My initial thoughts are that I'd rather live with i230 being worse on a low miss than the more punishing toe miss on the i240 combined with a mini-flyer every time I strike it a groove or two low. Probably comes down to individual strike pattern, as they otherwise appear pretty similar from an overall distance, dispersion, and ball flight perspective.
